mid 80's. a few spots near 90. around the bay with accountable in the mid-70's. at the beaches it is cooler with cloud cover. near 60 degrees. tomorrow will be another gorgeous day. the sun sets at 8:27. there is a full moon tonight. we will get a full view. i will let you know what changes in the forecast, including a chance of rain. liz: authorities are investigating after multiple cars were badly damaged in a fiery crash in danville last night. one of those cars flipped over in front of a starbucks. another car's front bumper is also gone. a witness tells us when he drove by he saw the flames as officers pulled people out of the vehicle. >> we saw a big fire outside of a starbucks and police cars. we were wondering what was going

on. we got out, went over quickly and we see they were pulling somebody out of the car and breaking glass. we saw a couple of bystanders on the side involved. they were saying, is he ok? liz: first responders showed up within minutes. at least one person was transported to the hospital. this is a developing story and abc 7 news will bring you updates as soon as they are available. we are getting a better idea of how a crime spree in the south band unfolded on thursy. it started withwo carjackings in san jose. then things turned deadly. aouple was hit and killed in sa and a man stabbed to death in milpitas. lauren martinez spoke with the men who work for that couple in san jose. lauren: chilling video captures a rampage in the south bay. this is the moment the suspect

is accused of ramming his stolen car into pedestrians on south 16th street thursday afternoon. two people, a couple, died. people in the neighborhood identify them. min tran is covered in bruises. he says he was hit by the car while standing at the bottom of a ladder. he's a painter and contractor for the homeowners who lived next to the small parking lot. the homeowners were admiring his work when they were struck by the car. now outside the away from where they were hit, a sign says "mr. and misses pham -- mrs. pham, we are praying for your family." >> they happen to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. lauren: neighbors describe them as an older, quiet and gentle couple. >> i'm just heartbroken.

i did not sleep last night. lauren: less than an hour after the suspect intentionally hit the couple with his car he proceeded to mel pedis where he's accused of stabbing a 27 euro men -- 27-year-old man. police believe these were random acts of violence. tram says he's ok but hurts for the lives lost. neighbors tell us they plan on coordinating a candlelight vigil in the coming days. lauren martinez, abc 7 news. liz: san jose please identify the suspect as 31-year-old and say he acted alone. he's on probation and court documents obtained revealed he has struggled with mental health. alameda county district attorney pamela price says justice has been served in a case with delonzo longwood.

he was accused of three murders in 2008. he's been in prison awaiting trial on the murder charges. a judge signed off on a request to drop two of the murder cases after a key witness refused to testify. this is the first time d.a. price has spoken on camera about the proceedings this week. >> he was overcharged by my predecessor. that was wrong. we have been working to right that wrong. liz: prosecutors and his attorneys are trying to work at a plea deal for the remaining murder charge. a judge would have to sign off, which could take several weeks. a taqueria is closing after nearly 40 years. the san francisco chronicle reports mi familia will its last meal on june 22. it racked up $65,000 in back rent during the pandemic. the owner told the chronicle they were able to raise the

money but the landlord is still moving forward with a plan for a new tenant. in the north bay, we have reported heavily on retail theft. now it appears to be expanding to other parts of the bay area. walgreens temporarily closed its doors on suny due to an uptick in shoplifting. it is located old redwood highway in sonoma county near highway 101. walgreens closed its doors for a day on sunday after employees set a dozen people shoplifted within 30 minutes. police also arrested three women for suspicion of shoplifting at that same walgreens on thursday. charges will not be filed against a los angeles angels athlete who got into a confrontation with a fan at the oakland coliseum. the video was taken following a game in march. it shows anthony rendon grabbing him by the shirt and taking a swing at him.

it was after the fan said something to rendon. open police closed the investigation after looking at assault and battery charges. major league baseball suspended him for four games and fined him after an investigation. churchill downs suspended racing after 12 horses have died in the past month. local animal advocates are calling for the same thing to happen here in the bay area at golden gate fields, which has seen multiple deaths this year. tim johns has a look at the debate happening in california. tim: at churchill downs, the horse racing season has come to a halt after that -- after the death of a dozen animals. the kentucky derby has suspended all racing. here the bay area local activists are calling for the same to happen at golden gate fields. >> i'm surprised so little has been done. tim: cassie king works with a

group called direct action everywhere. >> that is just inherent to the industry. these horses are bread for racing, fed her racing, drugged her racing. everything about the way they are raised is for profit. tim: california this year. >> it makes me wonder what number of horse deaths is acceptable. tim: board says the state has some of the most effective regulations in the country. they point out many deaths are because of illness. in a statement sent to abc 7 news they said, "the california horseracing industry has implement it 50 state fee measures to protect horses and riders. that led to a 55% reduction in equine fatalities since 2019. " that does not go far enough for samantha fay.

>> when you say that deaths are decreasing, the rate is decreasing, and yet public outrage is increasing with the deaths, you are most certainly on the wrong side of history. tim: activists would like to see places like golden gate fields shut down forget. they hope continued pressure will ultimately help them achieve their goal. >> public scrutiny and negative attention can create change. we have a lot of that in california as well. tim: tim johns, abc 7 news. liz: developing and the debt ceiling deal. president joe biden is expected to sign the bill today. it raises the federal borrowing limit and avoids the first ever default. he applauded the compromise. >> no one got everything they wanted but the reckon people got what they needed. -- but the american people got what they needed. we averted an economic collapse. we are bringing the deficit

down. liz: the agreement gives republicans some of their demented federal spending cuts but holding the line on major democratic priorities. >> we acted responsibly and put the good of the country ahead of politics. a final vote is overwhelming. far more bipartisan than anyone thought was possible. liz: the senate passed the legislation on thursday. the president will sign the measure today, two days ahead of the deadline to avoid a default. immediately after the president's speech we spoke with political analyst jackie speier. >> what we have what it was $13 million in cuts, we protected medicare,, medicaid, social security. both sides could speak to a win. speaker mccarthy says it was fabulous. we heard the president speak about all that was saved in the

deal and how in the end we will see a reduction in the great big debt we have. you will see $1 trillion reduced as a result of the negotiations, plus the $1.7 trillion the president has been successful in doing already. i think it is a win-win and that is what we should see more of coming out of congress. liz: because the deficit by $1.5 trillion over 10 years, suspends a debt limit until 2025, and imposes work requirements for some americans relying on food assistance programs. it will also end the pause in repaying student loans. 5:11. let's check outside. francis: it will be a gorgeous day and here's a live view from mount tam. there are some coastal clouds right down but plenty of everyone, and some very warm temperatures inland. i will have the accuweather 7-day forecast coming up. liz: a debate on water.

san jose residents may see an increase in their water bill next month. there could be a 14% rise on charges if see leaders vote to increase prices. people would pay around $16 more for their monthly water bill. san jose municipal water system officials blamed the cost spike on third-party water distributors who have increased their charges. the price jump goes into effect on july 1 if the city approves it. a flood warning in the areas surrounding the merced river in yosemite national park. the national weather service says the warning is in place until june 7. warm temperatures melt this year's historic snowpack in the sierra mountains. water levels are expected to rise above flood stage at 10 feet. visitors are advised to be cautious new riverbanks. this is something you are tracking and we are tracking as well. what is the weather like this weekend? francis: it will feel like summer finally with plenty of sunshine. the june gloom is gone. we have gorgeous days, drier and

when you moved here, what was binford road like? >> there were five or six motorhomes on the street. liz: this video shows it three years ago and 2020. now it is packed bumper-to-bumper, and with county sanctioned resources. there is weekly traffic up, porta potty's and handwashing stations. >> folks out here multiple days during the week engaging with residents, really hearing about their needs and listening to their stories, talking about support they might need to be able to get back into housing. liz: gary is the county's director of homelessness. who are these folks? >> folks here are family members, brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles and kids. liz: the goal is to get all the residents into permanent housing. what is your goal for one year from now? >> to be in my own place.

that will start at 11:00 a.m. los angeles medical professionals and community members gathered to protest against the growing firearm epidemic. trauma care officials offered free stop the bleeding classes for people that provide immediate care. they shared preventative measures to keep children from unsafe environments. according to the cdc, guns are now the leading cause of youth deaths in the u.s. >> if we had children dying at the writ of gun violence related to cancer or some type of disease, we would turn over every rock to find a cure. however, gun violence is 100% preventable. liz: vice president harris spoke at a gun violence event yesterday. turning to the latest on the iowa apartment building collapse, davenport says they still believe three people could be inside. iowa task force one, the search and rescue team sent by fema has brought in a team of canines to

assist recovery efforts. reena roy reports. reena: chilling video shows this apartment building in davenport as he begins to partially collapse. you see a piece fall and then two minutes later another one drops. then a large section crumbles. the video stops before the entire collapse can be seen. officials believe three people may be inside, missing since sunday when the building came crashing down. they say the rescue operation is now a recovery. >> we are tasked with completing the recon, the search for survivors and those that may have been presumed to have perished inside the collapse. reena: a new missing persons poster released on thursday. police believe they probability of being at home at the time of the collapse. >> we have families here that are still wanting answers and searching for their loved ones.

reena: his son has been sleeping in the scene. >> i tried to drop them off at school to do his finals. he just broke down and ran right back here. in my mind it is like if he needs to sleep here to satisfy his mind and soul, i will sleep with you, baby. reena: the cause under investigation. the building had a history of complaints and owners have been ordered to make fixes which officials say were underway. the chief building inspector has now resigned after giving the repairs a pass mark instead of marking them incomplete. we have learned days before the collapse a structural engineer report says the building was in imminent risk of karen lynn. -- crumbling. reena roy, abc news, new york. liz: more than 280 people are dead after a rail car flipped over and mangled in india. it is one of the deadliest train crashes in decades. rescuers are carefully waiting

through debris and wreckage trying to find more survivors, pulling up bodies. the crash led to a terrifying scene. rescuers climbed on top of the trains, breaking over doors and windows to try to free survivors. happening today, the mayor will join immunities to rally for public transit. they will mourn the economic down for the public transmit. senator scott wiener called and the governor to bailout public transit. newsom did include funding for operations in the budget. there's a new phase to stop sexual harassment on transit. as lena howland explains, it involves wallet size cards to help quietly interrupt harassment. lena: two years after launching the not one more girl campaign on bart to raise awareness of sexual harassment on transit using art, the data shows the

campaign has been working. >> especially post-covid as we see drops in ridership, we have to look at what is stopping riders from coming back. we felt this was something that could impact in a significant way. lena: their data shows 65% of people say they are more aware of sexual harassment or gender-based violence. 59% say they now know what to do if they witness harassment. 36% responding they feel safer riding bart. now bart is launching phase two after working with girls at oakland school for the arts and the unity council's latina mentorship program. >> they came up with great ideas about what if i had a card that i could handle somebody if i'm being harassed, or somebody could hand me if they could help me. we will pilot that.

liz: abc 7 his highlighting efforts to combat climate change. santa clara valley health care is making some changes to do their part. dustin dorsey takes a look. dustin: santa clara valley health care is going green. experts agree climate change will be the greatest threat to public health this century. in an effort to protect the community outside of medical care, they have signed the federal sector private health care initiative. >> we cannot practice medicine as we have been in the past. we need to be pivoting towards a newer and more sustainable way of practicing medicine to guard the health of our patients. dustin: they want to develop a

resilience plan to focus more on the needs of the community that experienced disproportionate risk of climate harm and reducing emissions by 50% by 2030 to achieve net zero by 2050. the goals are lofty but public health professor says the stakes are high as well. >> the industry is a significant contributor to climate change, accounting for between 8% to 10% of all greenhouse gas emissions in the united states. and a significant proportion of their emissions come from goods and services that are required by the hospital. dustin: things like anesthetic gas, operating room, food for patients are all negative contributors. they are moving to an electric ambulance fleet, avoided love value testing, imparting with universal meals to provide plant-based food options. what other hospital systems are providing this kind of food? >> we are the first in the nation to provide universal meals.
