celebrations of june pride month kicked off today in the north bay. a show of unity in the wake of legislation affecting lgbtq+ rights across the country. that evening and thank you for joining us. i am dion lim. today's events in santa rosa was designed to put unity and community. abc 7 news reporter cornell barnard is live where the event is happening trade organizers say the mission is to promote equality for all. cornell: for sure, dion, and that equality has been celebrated all day long at the sonoma county pride event. the theme this year is community come up with an emphasis on the word "unity," as many states are pushing back against lgbtq+ rights. ♪ downtown santa rosa, a huge crowd showing up for this year's parade. >> i love it.

i love all the people that are here to show our community love. we should all have a sense of belonging. that is why we are here. cornell: captain brian brought his daughter. >> i live here, she lives here, we wanted to have fun together, basically. >> this parade, this everything is a celebration of the fact that we have, so far and an acknowledgment that we have a long way to go. cornell: many believe in a new sense of pride unity as some states seek to diminish equality 540 anti--lgbtq bills have been introduced in legislatures this year. >> there are anti-trans laws and be lgbtq is strong in other parts of the country, and it is important to stand up for our lgbt community, especially our youth. >> my 13-year-old is marching. she has been questioning her sexuality, and she is out and proud this year, and we are supporting her and are excited to do that. cornell: pride organizers saying

this is the event they have ever hosted. safety and security measures have been increased to keep everybody safe. >> more and more, we have to have these events to showcase the people we are here, our rights are still being threatened, and also, you know, to encourage more people to celebrate and come out. cornell: here and the meaning and feeling of pride is still shining bright and cannot be tarnished or erased. >> pride means a lot of things to me, being able to show up authentically and be yourself around people that are celebrating queer joy, trans joy, and just being whoever you are, that is what it means to me, and it is really important. cornell: organizers tell me that they believe this event went really well today, and it was safe. they were concerned that protesters would show up, like they have in years past, but that is not happen. pride events continue on sunday across sonoma county.

an argument yesterday in a class which then turned an underage male student suffered a knife wound and a concussion could while investigating that incident, police say they witnessed a second attack happening outside of the school. police say that led to a chase and his discovery of a gun. an 18-year-old was arrested. police say that second attack was for retaliation for another fight. three people are in custody tonight in connection with an incident that included a knife attack at san mateo high school. an elderly man hiking on a remote road in the north bay died, and investigators are trying to determine if it is a criminal case. the marin county sheriffs office says the 83-year-old man was found yesterday near wild iris road with a head injury. he later died at the hospital. >> while investigating what happened in route to the hospital, it is believe the subject might be suffering from a gunshot wound to the head.

there is not any information at this time to indicate there is a risk to the public. dion: right now, investigators do not have a suspect but say they received a suspicious report from the area in the -- received suspicious reports in the area recently. they cannot confirm those incidents and the man's death are connected. his gun violence awareness weekend, and today, alameda county district attorney pamela price visited vision quilt, a group of a grade -- eighth grade students made the quote made up of i details -- of ideas to solve gun violence. a rally and march are planned for tomorrow across the golden gate bridge to demand action against gun violence. that is set to begin at 11:00 a.m. at vista point. the nation today has a new debt ceiling deal come up with just two days before the june 5 deadline, when the government would have run out of money.

abc news reporters doreen shaw tells us as the president signed the deal today, he praised the bipartisan compromise. zoreen: president biden praising the rays of the debt ceiling. they avert an unprecedented government default. pres. biden: the stakes could not have been higher. if we had failed to reach an agreement on the budget, and extreme forces threatening to take america for the first time in our 247-year history into default on our national debt, nothing would have been more irresponsible. zoreen: the agreement would suspend the debt ceiling for two years past the 2024 president's reelection while limiting federal spending. it puts new work requirements on some americans receiving food assistance and formally ends the pause on student loan payments. but taxes on wealthiest americans or big corporations, to demand from the white house, were not included.

dion: in the east bay, emergency crews rescued five people from a burning car in danville last night. the sheriffs office at the car's driver ran a red light, and went officers tried to pull the vehicle overcome a pursuit began. moments later, a car collided with a second vehicle and caught fire. a witness says first responders jumped into action. >> we pulled up to the light, we saw a big fire outside a starbucks and four police cars and we were kind of wondering what was going on. as we parked the car and got out, ran over quickly, and we see that there is -- they are pulling somebody out of the car. they are breaking glass. dion: the driver was seriously injured. the four passengers were taken to the hospital. two people in the car that was hit were not hurt.

today, people across the bay came together to celebrate day in the bay in san francisco, to welcome the bay's first national women's soccer team, bay fc. it was hosted by a handful of soccer legends who say they are excited to announce their new team to the world. >> we have thousands of fans that are here supporting us. there has been pent up demand in the area for years and years. we have had many chances, many attempted having professional women's football here, and this is now part of the national women's soccer league. we are the 14th team within the league, and we are thrilled to be here. dion: guests got to enjoy activities including games, giveaways, along with food and autographs. bay fc's first game will be march 2024, but the team is already taking deposits from those who want to secure their tickets now. just ahead, it is a bay area tradition that welcomes the summer season. we are talking about street
