of june pride month kicked off in the north bay. a show of unity in the wake of legislation affecting lgbtq rights across the country. good evening. i am dion lim. today's event in santa rosa is designed to put unity and community. abc 7's cornell barnard tells us that the parade mission is to promote equality for all. ♪ cornell: pride was on full display in downtown santa rosa. a huge crowd showed up for this year's parade. >> i love it, i love all the people here. we should all have a sense of belonging. this is why we are here. cornell: this captain brought his daughter. >> she needed to get outside. i live for this and she does it for this, so it was a good chance to get out and have fun together. >> this parade is a celebration of the fact we have come so far and acknowledge we have a long way to go. cornell: many believe there is a

new sense of pride unity this year as some states seek to diminish equality. the human rights campaign says 540 anti-lgbtq bills have been introduced in state legislatures this year. >> anti-trans laws and anti-lgbtq is strong in other parts of the country. it is important we continue to stand up and show our support for our lgbtq community, especially our youth. >> my 13-year-old is marching. she has been questioning her sexuality and she is out and proud this year, so we are celebrating with her and we are excited to do that. cornell: organizers say this is likely the biggest event they have posted. safety and security measures have been increased to keep everyone safe. >> more and more, we have to have these events to showcase to people, we are here, our rights are still being threatened, and, also, to encourage more people to celebrate and come out. cornell: here and now, many say the meaning and feeling of pride

pride parade.you can watch the n sunday, june 25, on abc 7, and . the event will be hosted by our very own abc 7 morning screw. -- mornings crew. a stabbing at san mateo high school. two students are charged with bringing a weapon onto school grounds. police say they were involved in an argument yesterday at summer school class. it turned physical, and a student suffered a knife wound and concussion. while police were investigating on campus, they say a second attack happened outside the school, while investigatin incident, police say they witnessed a second attack happening and an 18-year-old was arrested. an officer says they recovered a gun. an elderly man hiking on a remote road in the north bay died, and investigators are trying to determine if it is a criminal case. the marin county sheriffs office says the 83-year-old man was found yesterday near wild iris road and sir francis street

boulevard with a head injury. he later died at the hospital. >> while investigating what happened, it is believed that subject may be suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. there is not information at this time to indicate there is a risk to the public. dion: investigators do not have a suspect, but say they received suspicious reports in the area recently, including multiple calls about a person with a firearm near the area. officer say right now, they cannot confirm if those incidents and the man's death are connected. it is gun violence awareness weekend, and alameda county's district attorney visited a group of eighth grade students who made up a quilt full of ideas to solve gun violence. the colts will be on display at warehouse for 16 in oakland. -- her house 416 in oakland -- warehouse 416 in oakland.

never forget those who loved you so well and know that you have the responsibility to give back. love, dad. dion: in the east bay, emergency crews rescued five people from a burning car in danville last night. sheriff's office as the car driver ran a red light and when officers try to pull the vehicle over, a pursuit began. moments later, the car collided with the second vehicle and caught fire. a witness who did not want to be shown on camera says first responders jumped into action. >> we pulled up to the light, we saw a big fire outside of a starbucks, four police cars, wondering what was going on. we parked the car, get out, run over quickly, and we see that they are pulling somebody out of the car, breaking glass.
