officers investigate. a teenager suffered injuries in a crash in danville that we told you about yesterday. it started with a chase, after an attempted traffic stop. during a chase, they hit a car, before flipping and catching fire. we talked to a woman who knows the people involved. reporter: first responders worked quickly. >> pulled up to the light. big fire outside starbucks. four police cars. wondering what's going on. the car. reporter: dan rogers was driving by when he saw the car on fire. >> you could feel the fire across the street. it was huge.

reporter: the contra costa county sheriff's office says after 1 a.m., police tried to pull over a driver for running a red light. the driver didn't stop, a chase began for five miles. the driver ran another red light near blackhawk, this time hitting a tesla. no one in the tesla was injured but the speeding car rolled and caught fire. >> our buddies graduated. we are hoping everyone is ok. reporter: the intersection reopened but the starbucks is closed, due to damage. >> one senior, one junior. the junior's in critical condition. that person might not make it. reporter: this mom did not want to be identified and said her daughter knew all the people in the car. the seniors, all-female, just graduated friday night. she understands police have to

enforce the rules but is still concerned about a chase that went almost five miles through a winding, suburban road. >> the cops have to do what they need to do to stop it. at that time, what about the other cars? i don't know. it's not safe. reporter: the mom says the seniors were treated and released. police did not say if drugs and alcohol were involved. abc 7 news. gloria: no serious injuries after a car rammed into a small apartment building around 9:00 last night. two cars collided, one of them crashing into the building. it happened at the corner of 19th and hartford street in san francisco. the front of the car badly damaged. you can see a hole in the building. an men hiking on a remote road in the north bay has died.

investigators call his death, suspicious. the 83-year-old man was found with a head injury, friday, near wild irish road and sir francis street. he was found on the ground, severely injured, taken to the hospital where he died. investigators do not have a suspect now but have received multiple calls about a person with a gun in the area. >> multiple reports over the last several weeks, of subject seen with a firearm. those subjects are never located. we will continue to follow up on any leads, as it relates to vehicles in the area. gloria: officers cannot confirm if those reports and the man's death are connected. one month into the governor's decision to send in the california highway patrol and

national guard to help crackdown on san francisco's open drug market. we hit the streets to get a look at the impact and what comes next. reporter: the sight and sound of san francisco's fentanyl crisis. one month into a major move to crackdown on the open-air drug market. the california highway patrol teaming up with sfpd to target the tenderloin and south of market district. the national guard works behind the scenes, analyzing intel. have you noticed anything? >> i would say, not really. we are in a situation now where we see a level of addiction and drug use and drug dealing that's kind of unprecedented. reporter: the city has seen two drug overdose deaths per day, on

pace for the deadliest year yet. the supervisor says it will take more time and resources before seeing impact. right now, six officers on the street but believe more support is on the way. >> i talked to the chief of police today. he feels it is helpful to have chp lending support, uniformed presence, because that is san francisco's police department at a time when is is significantly understaffed. the ability to deploy those resources to narcotics operations. reporter: it is opening up resources to start arresting drug users. the supervisor confirming sfpd arrested 16 people using drugs in the past week for public intoxication. >> it's an approach i will support. so long as we are making an intervention that is more than just jail. >> what's it going to do? create more problems.

development. dustin dorsey explains how it will impact the housing crisis in the city. >> san jose's cost-of-living of living has forced thousands onto the street without a place to call home. this may not look like much but they represent a way the city and county can dig out of the housing crisis. >> here is our commitment as a community to make sure our families have access to safe, affordable, beautiful housing. reporter: thursday, nonprofit charity celebrated the groundbreaking of a new mixed-use development on the east side of san jose. five stories, 60 units, commercial space for nonprofits. they will be a 100% affordable housing development. >> this community, like many others, and those to come, is important to solving the crisis. by 2025, we will have 59 beautiful homes reserved for

households. >> in addition, future units will be earmarked for people transitioning out of homelessness. their work doesn't stop here. >> our board has approved 5100 affordable housing units, 2200 of these are set aside as supportive housing. when all the housing bond developments are in operation, we will have new permanent housing for 14,800 people. >> the senses has shown a downward trend in homelessness in san jose for the second year in a row. these leaders say they know the solutions. >> we need to build more affordable housing. we know housing first works. it's getting people off our streets as quickly as possible, into permanent homes, connecting them to the resources they need. that's what's going to be happening here.
