troubled neighborhood. abc 7 news starts now. >> building a better bay area, moving forward, mining solutions. this is abc 7 news. anchor: families, advocates, and gun violence survivors gathered today to demand real change when it comes to efforts to prevent gun violence. thanks for joining us for this early edition of abc 7 news. i am dion lim. they took a message of gun violence to the golden gate message -- golden gate bridge today. a nationwide movement honors lives lost and focuses on finding solutions to gun violence. reporter: several hundred people braved the fog to march across the golden gate bridge. they say enough is enough. got violence prevention advocates war orange, a c warned by hunters to signify not being a target, but many say gun violence can target anyone. >> it does not matter if you are

black, white, gay, straight, or what religion you are. when those bullets fly out of the chamber it will not discriminate. reporter: the annual rally was organized by moms demand action before calling for stronger gun safety laws to keep kids safe in school. >> i joined this movement because of school shootings that left me terrified to go to school. as a nation we have to say enough blood has been spilled and it is time for change now. >> that first year was hard. i could not take my children to school. reporter: liz russell survived a shooting at a veterans treatment program. three of her coworkers were killed. >> there is a lot of gun violence happening. it is on the rise. we know common sense gun laws save people from this tragedy. >> we are here to not only on the victims of gun violence today but really spread awareness on things you can do for gun safety if you have a gun in your home, so we need to find

the common ground where we can get together and keep our communities safe. reporter: 15 years ago a shooting in san francisco left arthur paralyzed. he has dedicated his life to keeping other safe from gun violence. >> every day i will wake up and look at this wiltshire as a positive and never a constant reminder that violence is real and there is a reason why we are doing this. reporter: these advocates say they will keep marching until there is a change. dion: to develop a news state investigators are trying to determine why more than 1000 migrants were dropped off unannounced by private jet in sacramento this weekend. it governor gavin newsom and attorney general rob bonta say there was no prior arrangement in place, but the migrants had documentation purporting to be from the government of florida. the paperwork says they were taken from texas to new mexico

and flown by charter jet to sacramento, where they were dropped off at a church. >> shocked at the lack of humanity and just the way they have not been treated with care and they have been like to. they are human beings. they are people with families. there are some young people just trying to support or make a life for themselves. there are people who left their children behind in this group. dion: attorney general rob bonta says prosecutors are considering civil action against those who transported the migrants or arrange that transport. u.s. officials are trying to determine why a chinese warship came dangerously close to colliding with an american destroyer in the taiwan strait. at the near miss was captured by global news on board a canadian ship nearby. the vessels came within 150 yards of each other. the chinese ship reportedly picked up speed before cutting across and forcing the american ship to slow down.

u.s. officials are accusing the crew of acting in an unsafe manner. >> they are trying to flex their muscles and advance authoritarianism. dion: china' is it defense minister responded calling for ship's presence or provocation. it comes as a tensions are mounting between the two countries. late last month i chinese fighter jet came within 400 feet of u.s. reconnaissance plane over the u.s. south china sea. earlier this year the u.s. shut down a chinese spy plane that flew over the u.s. a loud boom rattled nerves and windows around washington, d.c. this afternoon. large explosion. defense department officials confirmed it was a sonic boom caused when military jets scrambled to intercept an aircraft flying over restricted airspace. multiple jets took off from

on friday, president biden speaking to the nation on the agreement. pres. biden: it was critical to reach an agreement, and it is very good news for the american people. no one got everything they wanted, but the american people got what they needed. reporter: the new and nondefense spending, expands work requirements for some food stamp recipients and claws back covid-19 relief funds among other policy provisions. meanwhile, the deal face a backlash from both the far left and the far right, but it ultimately won support from a wide range of lawmakers on both sides of the aisle. >> one of our goals is to make sure we got nothing close to what you saw in the house republican bill. >> every single redline they lay down we crossed over in negotiations resulting in the largest savings and any legislation in the history of congress. reporter: now as americans and candidates gear up for the upcoming 2024 presidential election, the threat of default

will no longer be a potential issue. dion: happening tomorrow, it the official beginning of fire season in santa rosa. this city was devastated by wildfires back in 2017 that claimed nine lives and destroyed more than 3000 homes. at start of wildfire season mean screws will enforce the weed abatement ordinance. owners are required to cut weeds over 4 feet tall. san district is the site of an event designed to boost community pride. saint anthony's foundation is hosting tenderloin sunday streets, a celebration organizers call two full blocks of family fun. the program promotes safe pedestrian only spaces with the blood parties and neighborhoods are at the city. today organizers took the opportunity to demonstrate what is possible in one of san francisco's most troubled areas.

demi, i'm so proud of you and how you have persevered and help save us from outages. through your cancer diagnosis. never forget those who loved you so well and know that you have the responsibility to give back. love, dad. dion: lightning may be to blame for sparking a fire that ravaged a 160 year-old church in massachusetts. chris responded to a fire alarm on friday afternoon at the first congregation and the detergent spencer west of boston. they think the fire started in the steeple, which you can see collapse in the fire.

flames also destroyed the roof there. no one was injured. the building dates back to the 1860's, but the congregation's beginnings go back to the 1740's. the original church building was also destroyed by a fire. it is a historic day at the bay area's largest synagogue. temple emanuel broke ground on an extensive monetization project in san francisco. today the congregation marked together the start of the phase one part of the $97 million project. the new design will include reinstating the building's original entrance long closed out because of accessibility issues. a new entrance lobby will lead into a reconstructed open air courtyard and a large scroll of artwork will be buried within the construction site. that construction is expected to be completed in 2025 when the building will celebrate its centennial. to developing news, the directors guild of america says it reached a historic tentative

dion: san francisco's beach celebrated a festival over the weekend. the 2 day st festival commemorated everything italian from food to music, culture, and more. spectators enjoyed live entertainment from a 13 time world champion and north beach restaurant owner. it had activities for the entire family including a children's corner with an italian marionette dancing show. ♪

on the peninsula san b its annual parade and street festival. at the events are designed to highlight the community's rich cultural diversity and local businesses. san bruno relaunched its community days last year after a two year pandemic pause. a san bruno native estimates this is the 69th grade she has seen -- parade she is seen. >> it brings back a lot of memories. >> it was half the size last year. it is a lot safer. dion: it is good to see. the tradition started in 1941 as a dedication to children. it is modeled after the tournament of roses parade and all caps are welcome to participate. participation in anything outdoors was perfect today. we had temperatures that felt like summer time in some places. spencer: so much like summer

temperatures the remainder of the week. tonight overnight shows increasing clouds at all levels of the gap, maybe even a patch or two of drizzle near the coast. by afternoon, a couple of showers are in the bay area. look at our overnight low temperatures, mainly mid-50's, upper 50's in some spots, so quite mild overnight. tomorrow, at highs ranging from about 60 at the coast to upper 60's around the bay shoreline. inland areas, mid to upper 70's. one or two spots will hit 80 degrees. let's return to the forecast animation, notice a counterclockwise circulation, this is an area of low pressure producing that circulation, and it is bringing pockets of showers and maybe isolated thunder close to the bay area. out in the central val

dion: finally, a very reminder about beingbear aware when visiting lake tahoe. the sheriff's department posted this video on social media. that is a deputy tying a rope to the handle of the car where a bear is stuck inside. the officer opens the door from a safe distance. the bear climbs out and runs away, but as you can imagine it left quite a bit of damage. parts of the ceiling and seats totally torn apart. authorities say bears and tahoe
