that was heard in washington and parts of virginia and maryland. that aircraft later crashed. authorities reached the scene overnight as we learn more about the passengers and why the pilot may not have been responding. this morning, some near the nation's capitol are still rattled after a quiet sunday was interrupted with this was very jarring. we thought it was probably an earthquake, a sonic boom. startling residents across the region. this couple in fairfax, virginia, was recording a song when the boom causes them to leap out of their seat. the capitol and white house were both briefly placed on high alert. the sound was caused by two dc air national guard f-16s that were scrambled from maryland after a cessna business jet entered restricted airspace over the nation's capital around 3 p.m. those f-16s going supersonic to catch up with the cessna creating a sonic boom heard in dc. and surrounding areas. the f-16s intercepting the plane using flares in an attempt to draw the pilots attention but were unsuccessful.

ten minutes later, the plane crashing near george washington national forest in virginia with four people on board. when the d.c. air national guard f-16s eventually caught up to this aircraft, they looked in the cockpit and they could see that the pilot was slumped over and unconscious. aviation experts say hypoxia may have incapacitated the pilot and those on board. the most likely scenario here is that there was some loss of pressurization, which induced hypoxia, hypoxia is just the loss of consciousness due to lack of oxygen. the incident bringing to mind the 1999 crash that killed champion golfer payne stewart and five others after the pilots and passengers became unresponsive. that plane was flying from orlando to dallas, but crashed when it ran out of fuel over south dakota that had been flying erratically. and within a matter of seconds, that corkscrew brewed. and just when aren't straight down in vestigators concluded that the plane failed to pressurize and all on board were incapacitated due to hypoxia. it can make you feel lightheaded. it can make

you feel euphoric. you may not even know that it's coming on until you lose consciousness. as for sunday's crash, the man who runs the florida based company that owns the jet tells the washington post his daughter and two year old granddaughter, her nanny and the pilot were on the flight. he says they were returning home to long island, new york, after a visit to his north carolina home flight tracking data shows the plane made it to long island, but didn't land instead turning and heading straight to the d.c. area. those f-16s were scrambled from joint base andrews, where president biden was playing golf with his brother at around the same time overnight. virginia police say they reached the crash site and found no survivors. the faa and national transportation safety board will investigate what led to the crash of that cessna. not a breaking news in texas. police are searching for two suspects in a shooting that left a woman dead and four other people wounded. police say the victims , which include three children between the ages of eight and ten, are all relatives. now, according to investigators, the shooter shot at the family as they sat in a car outside of a

dallas area home. officers arrived a short time later. we do know that they are armed. we're here and we're going to make sure that we find out who is responsible. but it's a horrific scene. and it's not anything that i would i'd want my officers to be dealing with. police say the other four victims are expected to recover and investigators are now searching for security video from that scene. now to the rising tensions between china and the us, aggravated by another dangerously close call, the military released new video overnight as china is defending its actions after one of its warships buzzed an american destroyer. abc's linsey watts joins us from washington with the latest on what the us and china is saying about this troubling encounter. good morning, linsey. andrew good morning. us officials say this is unacceptable behavior from china and part of a coordinated pattern. but this morning china is standing its ground. new video this morning shows just how close a chinese warship came to a us military destroyer in the taiwan strait saturday. the video captured from aboard the

uss chung-hoon and additional footage of the incident coming from canadian broadcaster global news. estimates are the chinese ship was just 150 yards from the us destroyer air defense secretary lloyd austin, warning china's government do the right things to rein in that kind of conduct. because i think action events can happen that could cause things to spiral out of control. china's defense minister is defending its warship, telling the us to, quote, mind your own business and calling the us and canadian military presence in the taiwan strait a provocation when the us is seeing an alarming increase in confrontations with china. just last week, a chinese fighter jet flew within 400ft of an american spy plane over the south china sea, forcing the us plane to bounce wildly through turbulence of the fighter jets wake. us officials criticize the maneuver as unnecessarily aggressive and part of a pattern by china. they're trying to, you know, flex their muscles and

advance authoritarianism. we need to stand strong. the republican chair of the us intelligence committee calls china's aggression unbelievable . also highlighting that massive chinese spy balloon that traveled across the us before being shot down. the biden administration is looking for a diplomatic fix to the souring relations, sending a senior state department official on a rare visit to beijing. and china's defense minister declined a meeting with defense secretary austin at a security conference in singapore on friday. although the two did have a brief discussion in at dinner. austin says more conversations are needed to avoid miscalculations that could lead to crisis. andrew all right. linsey watts for us in washington. linsey, thank you. now to the race for the white house. most of the republican presidential hopefuls were in iowa this weekend pitching themselves as the future of the party. it comes as a number of republicans running for president is expected to grow in the coming days as the republican field in the 2024

presidential race is about to get even more crowded. former new jersey governor chris christie is expected to announce he's running for president tomorrow, followed by a similar announcement by former vice president mike pence on wednesday, i oh, nearly every republican running for president spending the weekend in iowa. appearing at a rally at the state fairgrounds near des moines. america is not a land of oppression. america is the land of opportunity. pence in jeans, boots and a leather vest. we're looking forward to being back in iowa on wednesday, hopping on the back of his harley at an annual roast and ride, teasing his presidential announcement. one of the reporters just asked me if we're showing up more in iowa, what our lane would be. i said i'm more worried about the lane we're going to be staying in today. so former president donald trump, the leading republican presidential candidate, notably absent from the event after spending two

else was injured. in california , an investigation is now underway after a private jet landed in sacramento with 16 migrants on board. officials say the migrants were deceived into getting on the plane after crossing the border into texas. they are looking into whether any crimes were committed, including kidnaping officials say they may already know who funded and organized the flight . we think it's the state of florida. we think that because there's documents that were given to the migrants to sign with the name of the state of florida on it, it's their their voluntary transportation program. it's the same program that was used in martha's vineyard. the state attorney general is considering charging is if he can determine for sure who is responsible, the migrants are being fed and receiving free medical care and legal services. next your money and growing concerns about spending more of it at the gas pump and in stores. a cut in oil production could soon be felt by american drivers just in time for summer. this morning, prices at the pump

could soon be on the rise after the group of major oil producing countries known as opec plus took steps to prop up crude oil prices. saudi arabia says it will significantly cut the amount of crude oil it contributes to the global economy each day starting next month, i would have to call it the saudi lollipop, which is a million barrel of reduction in for the start. that starts at the 1st of july. and that million is also extendable. the average price for gas is now 356 a gallon compared to 482 from this time last year. oil prices have fallen even after opec slashed 2 million barrels per day in october. then in april,sa surprise cut of even more barrels per day. the decisions initially sent oil prices higher, but they soon came back down. we will do whatever it is necessary to bring stability to this market. meanwhile, a labor dispute could drive up prices for other goods. some terminals at the ports of long beach and

social media. a lot of people have lost a bit of common sense animal expert jeff corwin echoing the concern of park officials who say there's been a series of frightening close encounters at yellowstone, including two tourists under investigation for grabbing a baby elk, putting it in their car and driving off. and last month, a man from hawaii charged with intentionally disturbing wildlife after handling a newborn bison, yellowstone park rangers forced to euthanize the calf when they couldn't reunite it with the herd. if you're getting in the way, not only could you get injured, could the animal get injured or in trouble, but you're actually impeding or hurting their chances for survival videos like this also surfacing online. a yellowstone tourist taking a selfie next to a bison and another video near old faithful showing a bison charging at a family. the father gourd trying to save his son. the animal eventually scared off by someone appearing to be a park ranger, spraying something to distract it. a statement from yellowstone
