of my friends fly out from michigan and enjoy the san diego weather. go to the beach, to all of the things that i love to do. >> reporter: she was supposed to tie the knot, she said she was burned during a laser hair removal session. but she called off the entire party. >> i have laser hair removal burns on both of my arms. i'm starting with the shoulders all the way down. i had burns on my neck and on my lower face. >> reporter: you lost the opportunity to have your wedding. >> it is something that you never think of, at least i did not. it was my skin and then it being the first thing that people see about you yeah, it cost me a lot of self-esteem. >> reporter: scores more are considering -- considering hair removal options for the sake -- the hot summer days ahead. leisure procedures capable of stepping unwanted hair are booming. about 1 million people in the u.s. get laser hair removal each year. the procedures amount to a $300 million per-year industry.

and millington in the head. and that is what chaos goes where. >> reporter: she is a nurse practitioner and the founder of the laser studio in brooklyn, new york. >> first and second degree burns, viral, social media. >> i was like, this is kind of burning and i'm starting to feel some bumps. >> i have been using different prescription ointments. just trying to keep the burns as moist as possible. >> got it! >> reporter: she says body hair has affected her self-esteem for years. why didn't you want to remove all the excess hair? >> i have thick, curly hair. that translates into my arms and my legs. and i think i became very self-conscious of that at a very young age because people around me were not of my skin color. they do not have my hair text texture. >> reporter: her first few laser hair removal treatments went well. after one session, she had a

feeling something was not right. >> avary quickly noticed noticed that my skin was hiding. lots of patches of hives. >> reporter: she says even as her reaction got worse, she second-guessed herself. >> i said, is this normal? i pointed at it. she was like, it is fine. with keep going to other arm. she finished the other arm and at that point, i asked her to stop. it was just the pain was way too excruciating. >> reporter: she says sh she did something she does a lot of women do, downplayed her pain. >> by the time i went out into the front office, i could see the eyes on other clients on me. but unfortunately, i told mys myself, you know, it is not that big of a deal. calm down. it is in your head. >> reporter: so you really did cover up your skin. >> yeah, definitely did. i was fully covered, like shoulder to arm. i even wore like, sweatshirts so i could cover up my neck. it was like 70 degrees weather and i was wearing longsleeved shirts. >> reporter: she says the owner of the leisure center asked her about her sun exposure while on

a recent vacation. >> she looked at my arms and very quickly said, why didn't you tell us you were attending? why didn't you tell us you were out in the sun? she just said, you should have told us, you should be using does not be doing laser. >> reporter: she says they never warn her of the consequences. >> they did not go over the procedure, aftercare with makeup nothing. >> reporter: did you feel extreme pain, blistering that is the beginning of a burn? >> reporter: dr. janine downey is a dermatologist. >> this laser is the slv laser. >> reporter: she views these burns as a part of the broader problem in the beauty industry. some providers rushing to get in on a hot trend. lacking medical knowledge and training space technical training perspectives, a lot of people do discount coupon their health and go to laser clinics that are staffed by people that learn how to use the loser the day before. and burns have been. >> student leaders tend to be more effective in the wider range of skin types or shapes

including machines that can easily distinguish the melanin in the laser's from the melanin in the skin. expect the trauma of being burned by a laser cannot be an understatement because it did not have to happen. because now in 2023, there are lasers for all skin types. >> reporter: the american academy of dermatology recommends choosing a porch or groove -- board certified dermatologist for any laser treatments. >> to my patients all the time, look in the waiting room. is the doctor have patients that look like you? to document have staff like you? does the doctor have experience for treating your type of skin? at her laser studio, wagoner focuses specifically on getting people with darker skin closer to their hair removal goals. >> we have a firsthand first-had understanding of the complications that coexist with skin of color and hair removal because of the sheer nature of our hair type which can be earlier vers or susceptible to ingrown hair, dark spots.

one point, she had to shave almost every day. >> reporter: for years, wagoner experienced her own complications with unwanted hair. >> i essentially destroyed my skin with shaving, the wheezing, and the waxing. and it just kept coming back. >> reporter: her early laser hair removal experiences were worse. >> i ended up being burned, had hair -- there's a lot of facilities that have not invested in laser technology to suit everyone. and it is not one-size-fits-all because dark skin can come in a variety of shades. >> reporter: she says she will likely never get the procedure done again. but would like to see others who do speak up for themselves. when you go to a laser technician, ask to see their certifications. ask about, you know, what training they received. and the other thing is do they talk to you about preparation, what you should be doing before hand, even weeks out from your

apartment? >> i also mentioned you have grown emotionally a lot since this moment. do you feel an evolution in yourself? >> absolutely, i do. i think that one of the first things that i came to at the moment was blaming myself when i was the one in excruciating pain. i think a lot of people especially women with color, you know, feel that we should not be taking up space. but i should trust my gut a little bit more. i should speak up for myself. >> reporter: she did not get to dream wedding she planned in san diego. but she did marry the love of her life in a simple courthouse ceremony. and now nearly two years later, she is toward the end of her recovery. still has to take precautions. how does it feel to to be out ? >> it is a big release. it sounds so bizarre but the privilege to be out in the sun and on the beach and not super worried for my health, this is
