america this morning. good wednesday morning, everyone. i'm andrew dymburt. i'm andrea fujii in for rhiannon. we begin with a mass shooting causing chaos at a high school graduation in virginia. police overnight described the deadly violence as a targeted attack, with witnesses reporting dozens of gunshots in rapid succession this morning. a virginia community in shock after a mass shooting brought chaos to a high school graduation. seven people were shot outside a richmond theater where graduates and their families were leaving the ceremony. probably at least like 30 shots total. i saw the ambulance pull away several people off of the ground. police say two people are dead. a family member telling abc news they were father and son. 18 year old sean jackson and his father, renzo smith, there to celebrate his son's graduation. jackson whose younger sister was hit by a fleeing car and is recovering this image shows students in caps and gowns running from the scene. they

just like continuous fired and continuously fired. and everyone started running for their lives. a 19 year old suspect is now in custody, expected to face second degree murder charges. police saying they believe this was a targeted attack. we think the suspect knew at least one of the victims. the superintendent still in the robe he wore for the ceremony. emotions all tired of seeing people get shot. our kids get shot and i beg of entire community to stop. a child should be able to go to their graduation and walk out the graduation and enjoy the accomplish moment with their friends and their families. it's nothing sacred any longer. five other people were injured in the aftermath. officials say multiple handguns were found at the scene. a large swath of the us faces air quality alerts this morning due to smoke from the wildfires in canada. new york already seeing the worst air

pollution of any city in the world, creating a health hazard for people as far south as the carolinas. some schools are even canceling recess this morning from bad to worse. tens of millions of americans are on alert for unhealthy air. the new york yankees game last night smelling like a campfire fire. yeah new york at one point seeing the worst air quality of any city on earth. with the smoky haze coming from wildfire in canada is blotting skylines from manhattan to cleveland, we're really seeing these exceptional levels that are traditionally seen in really, really populated cities. more than 400 wildfires are burning across canada from the western provinces to quebec, turning the sky bright orange smoke seeping across the border, prompting air quality advisors for at least 80 million americans as far south as north carolina. one expert saying if you're exposed to the

current air quality in new york for 24 hours, it could be equivalent to smoking. six cigarets s the immediate health risks are worsening of asthma and worsening of allergy symptoms. it can happen immediately in exposure to this type of air quality. vulnerable people are warned to stay inside, get the current air quality folks. it is hazardous out there to be outside from new york to philly, much of southern new england. and that's not going to change much through the day on wednesday. but there is some relief coming on friday. the rain will wash out a lot of that smoke out of the air. scientists monitor unhealthy air from wildfire smoke by measuring a particle known as pm 2.5, which is small enough to get past your airway defenses and cause breathing problems. a recent study at stanford university found in the last decade there has been a 27 fold increase in the number of people living in areas with an unhealthy amount of pm 2.5. at least one day per year. officials in canada say half of the country's wildfires are

burning out of control. a us bound air india flight remains stranded in russia after it was diverted due to engine trouble. americans are believed to be among the more than 200 passengers who had to spend the night in eastern russia as they wait for a replacement plane to take them to san francisco. a teenager traveling with his family says they're barred from leaving a local hostel where they're staying and can't use their credit cards because of sanctions on russia linked to the war in ukraine. the replacement plane is due to arrive today. billions of gallons of water released after a major dam was destroyed in southern ukraine are flooding homes and causing concern about a lack of clean drinking water. us intelligence officials are reportedly leaning toward blaming russia for the attack. the dam held back as much water as utah's great salt lake, forcing thousands to evacuate. his homes were washed away. the flooding also killed hundreds of animals at a zoo and has raised concern about safety at a nearby nuclear power plant, which is europe's largest. abc's tom soufi burridge is there and the

un's nuclear watchdog saying in just two days time there might not be enough water left in the reservoir to replenish water reserves at the nuclear plant. but the facility has its own storage of water to remain safe for months. the un says the dam attack could be the most significant damage to civilian infrastructure since the war began. former new jersey governor chris christie has officially launched his second presidential campaign and he wasted no time last night attacking former president trump, calling trump a, quote, self-serving mirror hog. abc's linsey watts is here now with more on the race for the white house. linsey good morning. andrew. good morning to you. chris christie didn't mince words. he says he's in the race to take out trump and win. but this morning he is still considered a long shot candidate. chris christie is coming out of the gate swinging. the reason i'm going after trump is twofold. one, he deserves it. and two, two, it's the way to win while other republicans vying for the white house have

mostly avoided mentioning the former president, christie said trump's name more than 40 times as he launched his campaign at a town hall in new hampshire. the person i am talking about who is obsessed with the mirror, who never admits a mistake, who never admits a fault, and who always finds someone else and something else to blame for whatever goes wrong. but finds every reason to take credit for anything that goes right? is donald trump. trump responded on social media, saying christie's speech was hard to watch and boring, calling him a failed governor. christie is a former trump adviser who also ran for president in 2016. polling by 538 shows he hasn't exceeded more than 3% in a single primary poll this year. i hear chris christie is coming in. what's the purpose? former vice president mike pence is also launching his campaign for president, releasing a new video this morning that doesn't

mention trump by name. today, our party and our country need a leader that will appeal, as lincoln said to the better angels of our nature. pence will be the first vp in modern history to take on his former running mate. lindsey, thank you. fighting broke out last night between pro and anti lgbtq demonstrators outside a school board meeting in glendale, california. the board was scheduled to vote on recognizing june as pride month. three people were arrested. protesters last week clashed at a school in hollywood over a pride themed assembly. time now for a look at your wednesday weather. a lightning strike in the thunder that followed was seen and heard near houston. more thunderstorms are expected in parts of texas today. looking at the radar, storms are also expected today in the rockies and the sierra nevada mountains. showers are expected from the midwest to the carolinas with heavier rain in parts of the southeast. checking today's high temperatures, unseasonably hot in the pacific

arrived to provide oxygen and the child has now been released from the hospital. two more infant deaths have been linked to a recalled baby pillow. ten deaths are now blamed on the boppy newborn lounger, prompting regulators to once again urge parents to stop using the pillows, which were first recalled in 2021 due to suffocation risk. now to the controversial merger shaking up the sports world. saudi arabia funded liv golf is combining forces with the pga tour. it means the saudi government will now have a major stake in a major american sport family. as of nine over 11, attack victims are among those speaking out. here's abc's lionel moise. this morning, fierce reaction after the pga tour's announcement that its merging with its saudi funded rival, liv golf. we just realized that we were better off together than we were fighting or apart. it's an about face. after a years long rivalry. liv has paid top dollar to poach some of the biggest names from the pga, including dustin johnson and phil mickelson.

players faced backlash for joining a tour backed by a country linked to a history of human rights abuses, including the murder of washington post journalist jamal khashoggi. i don't condone human rights violations at all. i'm certainly aware of what has happened with jamal khashoggi. and it's i think it's terrible. golfer rory mcilroy reportedly turned down a $300 million offer and tiger woods, a $700 million offer to play for live in the past. golfers say yesterday's merger announcement came out of the blue. not everyone took issue. i've dedicated my entire life to being at golf's highest level. i'm not about to stop playing golf because the entity that i play for has joined forces with the saudi government. but a group representing families of the nine over 11 attack victims say it's shocked and offended and accuses the pga and commissioner monahan of hypocrisy, saying it appears they're concerned for our loved
