the smoke stretches so far that even detroit is also up near the top of the list. all of this, the remnants of hundreds of canadian wild fires that continue to drift further into the united states. this morning wild fire smoke blanketing the skies for millions of americans. >> there's the red sun again. >> reporter: national weather service issuing air quality alerts all over the northeast, stretching west to ohio and even as far south as the carolinas and georgia. >> it's very strange. i was on the subway. it was like a zombie apocalypse. >> reporter: overnight new york's air quality registering as the worst of any major city world wide. >> has a yellow haze to it. >> reporter: millions of phones getting alerts like these. the air quality index peeking above 200, a level considered very unhealthy particularly for the elderly and those with respiratory issues. >> the immediate risks are worsening of allergies. worsening of asthma.

this is the worst i have seen the numbers. >> reporter: sports, recess and outside play cancelled for millions across the region. >> i woke up this morning and went outside. it was very strange. just sort of an eerie feeling. >> reporter: officials say the cause, wild fires in canada. 10,000 miles of canadian land has been scorched so far this fire season, an area larger than the state of vermont. 26,000 people evacuating their homes. >> across the country, there are currently 413 wild fires burning in 249 of those fires are deemed out of control. >> reporter: of course all this smoke contain particles that can get into your lungs and even your bloodstream. while it's not an immediate concern for the general public, experts do say if you're trying to protect yourself, we all have mask nows. you would need a respirator grade mask stronger than an n-95 to work in these conditions. if you are vulnerable, elderly, pregnant, you should consider staying inside.

rebecca. >> important precautions, trevor. we'll have more from dr. jen ashton in just a moment. we want to turn now to our chief meteorologist ginger in georgia. ginger, how long do you expect this to last? and where does it head next? >> rebecca, we've been in this pattern for over a week or more, the united states in general. this low pressure system that's bringing the winds that are bringing that smoke all the way south to here in north georgia by later this afternoon, that is not moving until the weekend. let me talk you through this. we spoke with nasa scientists who said the epa has been tracking this air quality from smoke from wild fire since 1999. this will likely rival and probably surpass the worst, which was back in 2002. you saw the air quality alerts from south carolina up to new hampshire an vermont. look where the worse lt of sit this morning. philadelphia into delaware. watch the smoke plume as we put the forecast on here. watch for the deep dark red and purple colors. that low pressure system

swirling, counter clock wise, george. going to bring in that orange and red into atlanta and even huntsville by this afternoon. really thick up through the weekend. we're going to clear it out by early next week. >> thank you. bring in dr. jen. we heard trevor talk about the risk. break that down. >> the key thing here, george, we usually say, oh, if people have under lying respiratory or pulmonary conditions they are most at risk. that is true. i want to be clear here. we are all at risk. this is fine particulate air. you cannot necessarily see it in the air, but you can feel it. this can come on suddenly. masquerading almost like seasonal allergy symptoms or even an upper respiratory situation. but assume we are all at risk. obviously things that you can do, reduce or avoid going outdoors unnecessary it's necessary. because these fine particulate matters, particles, can get into the eyes and lungs causing burning eyes, running nose. it can even precipitate bronchitis.

describe the scene as chaos, mayhem. hundreds of people were inside this park celebrating, taking photographs and then over here, other graduates and their loved ones were walking out of a graduation ceremony when suddenly gunshots rang out. this is the moment a barrage of gun fire pierced the celebration outside a high school graduation near the campus of virginia commonwealth university in richmond. >> all traffic stand by. >> reporter: overnight, police confirming two people were killed. a family member telling abc news they were father and son. 18-year-old shawn jackson and his father, there to celebrate his son crossing the stage with his diploma just minutes earlier. jackson's 9-year-old sister was hit by a fleeing car and is recovering in a wheelchair. >> selfish act, senseless act. the question that comes in my mind right now is, is nothing

sacred any longer? >> reporter: authorities say the incident began around 5:15 p.m. tuesday. high school students and their loved ones leaving the theater after the ceremony when the shots rang out. >> i walked past this guy. he ran and next thing i know he was shot. and then somebody threw me up under a tree or a bush. then people were just on top of me. it was total, total chaos. >> multiple people shot. >> reporter: police say officers were on scene within 45 seconds. five others were also shot. police say one man is being treated for life threatening injuries. according to investigators, the suspect, a 19-year-old man, is facing two second degree murder charges with possibly more to come. officers believe he knew at least one of the victims. >> this should have been a safe space.

[ laughter ] but it ain't funny any more. it is the last throes of a bitter, angry man who wants power back for himself. >> reporter: christie and pence are entering a crowded field. by the end of the week, 12 republicans will be fighting for the nomination. it's extremely rare to see two former running mates challenge each other. the field just keeps on growing larger. also expected to join the race today, north dakota's governor. he's also calling for new leadership. george, we have been out on the campaign trail and no one is taking on trump as directly as chris christie. >> we are going to see him right now. rachel, thank you very much. chris, thank you for joining us. i'm gonna miss you on the roundtable. much more importantly, why should you be president? >> george, look. what we have seen over the last eight years, both from the biden administration and the trump

administration is folks on the trump side who put themselves before the american people. that's exactly what he's done each and every time when there's been a key decision to make. and joe biden has shown he is simply not up for the job. i have been tested, tested over and over again in a blue state when i was governor, a very difficult place to govern. i know how to bring solutions to our party and, most importantly, to our country. >> i guess the big question is, how are you going to get there? you're pretty far behind in the polling, at least the initial polling. it's very early. you're kind of caught in a republican party between the pro trumper, who don't like the fact that you don't support him, and the never trumpers who don't like the fact that you stuck with him so long. so how do you find a lane? >> george, i think there's only one lane for the republican nomination for president. donald trump is the head of it. you need to go right through him and make the case against him. that's what i intend to do, while also making the case for leadership that doesn't turn its

back on ukraine, for leadership that says yes, we have to be fiscally responsible again. for leadership that says we should have educational freedom. and when you make promises as a presidential candidate, you should keep them. donald trump promised to replace and repeal obama care, he didn't do it. he promised to build a wall and have mexico pay for it. he didn't do it. he promised to balance the budget in four years. he left with the largest deficit of any president in history. he promised to retire our national debt in eight years and added trillions to it. that's broken promises like that, george, hurt the american people. the stakes are too high. that's the case you need to make. if you make it effectively, i think we will be the nominee. >> are you going to be able to make the case? in order to get into the republican detate you have to pledge to support the republican nominee. you said you're never going to support donald trump even if he gets the republican nomination for president. will you be on the debate stage? can you support donald trump if, indeed, he is the republican nominee?

>> george, i'll be on the debate stage. i will take the pledge that the rnc puts in front of me just as seriously as donald trump did eight years ago when he signed the pledge. they begged him to do it. on the first debate stage, he didn't raise his hand to say he would support the nominee. i will do whatever i have to do to be on that stage and to be able to make the case to the american people that there's a need for new leadership. i'll take the pledge as seriously as donald trump did. >> are you saying you're going to take the pledge but you won't mean it? >> what i'm saying george is i'm going to do exactly what the rnc has set us up to do. eight years ago donald trump signed the pledge but disregarded it. there was no penalty. i'm going to do whatever i need to do to save my party and my country. we're gonna get 40,000 donors at least that you need to be on the stage and we're going to make the case directly to the american people. >> if donald trump gets the nomination for president, will you vote for him?

>> george, he's not gonna get the nomination for president because i am. >> chris christie, thank you very much. rebecca? >> all right, george. thank you. we turn to breaking news this morning. pope francis is set to under go surgery after being hospitalized on wednesday. lama hasan has the latest. good morning, lama. >> reporter: good morning, rebecca. the vatican announcing pope francis has gone to the hospital for intestinal surgery in rome. the pope now 86 years old, will be under general an aesthetic and will remain hospitalized for several days. the announcement comes just two years after he had a section of his large intestine removed in 2021. the pope has also suffered from chronic knee pain, often using a wheelchair and walker. he's refused surgery because he's reacted badly when he's been in the hospital in the past. the pope did hold an audience this morning. you can see him greeting the crowd. he also has two meetings before going to the hospital.

surveillance and ultimately determining the suspect's actions were not justifiable under florida's stand your ground law. overnight a florida woman accused of shooting her neighbor now in police custody. >> tonight we have arrested 58-year-old susan lorantz for the killing of miss aj owens. >> reporter: lawrence was arrested and charged with manslaughter of aj owens when she knocked on the door. according to police, on friday a group of children were playing next to lawrence's home. one of owens' children forgot their ipad and went back to retrieve it. lawrence allegedly threw a pair of skates at the child. owens approached lawrence's home and was shot through the door as she knocked. the 35-year-old pronounced dead at the hospital. >> i saw her laying on the ground. that's when i went in and started doing scanning for open wounds. >> reporter: franklin heard the gun shot and helped owens. did she lose a lot of blood? >> yes, sir.

you could see the blood on the ground. >> reporter: authorities arresting lawrence days after the incident once they determined florida's stand your ground law which heavily depends on presumption of fear did not apply. the owens family attorneys are calling for the law to be eradicated. >> it does not apply in all situations. this situation is a prime example of when it was not justified. it was simply a killing. >> my daughter, my grandchildren's mother, was shot and killed with her 9-year-old son standing next to her. she had no weapon. she posed no imminent threat to anyone. >> reporter: on twitter, owens' family calling lawrence's arrest pivotal. >> tonight was a pivotal moment with the arrest of the person who shot and tragically killed my daughter. >> reporter: the manslaughter charge carries a penalty up to

>> we're back with an abc news investigation. an increasing number of cases of a mysterious rare condition are popping up and causing some people to become quite ill. juju chang joins us with how cannabis is linked to the illness. good morning, juju. >> good morning, robin. most people don't think of cannabis as making you violently ill. but some people developed this condition after ingesting cannabinoids over a long period of time. it is being reported far more often with higher potency and greater variety of cannabis product, from vaping to edibles. when erika was 33, the otherwise healthy artist was struck down with a severe mystery illness. >> felt like i was going to die. shake, elevated heart rate, completely dehydrated and the vomiting was back, back, back. >> reporter: erika was in the hospital for two weeks with no diagnosis. she says her doctors assumed she

smoke stretches, overnight new york city registered as the single worst air quality of any major city in the entire world. not just in new york city. detroit now in the top five on that same list. we're watching as that smoke continues to stretch further south. we have air quality alerts going down to the carolinas and even georgia. this is coming from hundreds of wild fires that have been burning in canada. officials say 10,000 acres have been scorched. that's an area of land larger than the state of vermont and half of these wild fires are still out of control. it means the smoke is not immediately going away. we're expecting another wave to move in tonight into tomorrow, thursday evening maybe here in new york city things will start to lighten up. but conditions could then get worse in western new york and into pennsylvania, too. it might not be until this weekend when we finally see some weather patterns that will start to move this smoke out of here. in the mean time though these

that's kind of fallen out of favor recently. it can be subtle. it's not always so obvious. >> why are these medications for this, and what are the risks? >> in terms of management, i think these medications have an awful label role for pcos. it depends on the severity. we normally manage this with attention to diet, nutrition, a good eating plan, possibly hormonal management. weight loss medications have a role. we used to use the drug metforeman a lot with women with pcos. it's still used. then medications to treat acne and body hair. but i think when you talk about mounjaro, ozempic, they have a role in women who are suffering from overweight and obesity and have pcos. >> there's some psychological aspects? >> there absolutely are, robin. it takes courage for someone like this to come forward with transparency and honesty and share her story. i think you have to connect the dots on the psycho social.
