a plane full of people but they are close to getting where they wanted to go. dan: let's take a live look at the tarmac. the air india follow -- flight is scheduled to land past midnight tonight. they will have a bunch of loved ones there waiting for them. ama: tim johns is live, hearing some of those femoral -- family members emotions. reporter: hi. that's right. a sense of relief, that's the best way i can describe the mood . families are awaiting their loved ones to touchdown here at sfo. many of them telling me, they want this journey to be over. the bay area arrival that for some families seems like it's been in a in the making. tuesday, a flight took off from dell he and was scheduled to land the same day at sfo. after experiencing engine problems, it had to make an

emergency landing in eastern russia. >> the plane was supposed to arrive at 8:00. i got a message on my phone of detainees going to land. i'm like, i've never heard of the place. reporter: i talked to them wednesday night. locals tell me her families were -- her parents were on the flight. they will touchdown in the bay area thursday morning. given the current tensions between the u.s. and russia, she was worried about what might happen to those on board. >> the no-fly zone, that was thing that was worrying us. how do we reach them if there's an emergency? will the plane be allowed to fly to the u.s.? reporter: passengers have said they've been treated well by air india and russian authorities. we spoke to one of those passengers before their departure from russia. she showed us the school where she and her travelers had spent the evening. >> they had good food for 200

people. we are good. we got coffee. we got milk. we got eggs. everybody is safe. reporter: in california, the experience has created a bond between most of the travelers. many of them are chipping in to help one another ensure everyone has what they need. >> my mom says when you are sad or feeling down, listen to music. she was singing an indian song. reporter: in the moment of being reunited, she believes it will be especially sweet. >> i usually never get a welco balloon. this time i will. reporter: guys, that scheduled to land at sfo around 12:15 a.m.. tim johns, abc7news. ama: let's get into tonight's abc 7 deep dive.

we focus in on a story you might be hearing about that deserves a closer look. it's about wildfire smoke. canada is suffering from disastrous fires right now and it's making the entire northeast look like the surface of mars. >> this is crazy. >> i've never seen it like this. after 40 years of living here, this is bizarre. >> they are downright dangerous. ama: president biden has spoken to the canadian prime minister about lending wildfire support. air-quality alerts have gone out in 16 states. the faa slowed air travel in the new york city area. broadway shows were postponed. tomorrow, new york will distribute one million n95 masks across the state. lauren martinez shares more on how this reminds so many of us of one day three years ago. reporter: time lapse video shows the new york city skyline engulfed in heavy orange wildfire smoke. this is what manhattan normally

looks like and this is what it looked like wednesday. more than 8 million anchors, -- acres have burned in canada and now smoke is enveloping the northeast. >> you feel like you are far away from canada. the fact that the smoke is making this much of an impact in the city is crazy. i mean by noon, the skies were orange and red. reporter: sophia lives in brooklyn but is originally from orange county. coworkers were quick to ask her what she -- they should do. >> we have fire days. i don't think we should be here right now. i'm telling people, mask up. don't go outside. i don't know if i have to go to work tomorrow yet or if i will be remote. reporter: the skies trigger a flashback for bay area residents. in september of 2020, we experienced the same vivid haze. >> this is a wake-up call for those on the east coast about what is in store for the future.

these wildfires will continue to be a problem. reporter: new york topped the list of the world's worst air quality. the category is hazardous. >> 500 is the limit. we are at 419. i saw that and that's when i told myself, if i see this in the morning, i'm not going to work. i will work from home. reporter: walk away. >> it feels very eerie. for this city to feel like that on a wednesday in the middle of the busy workday is very strange. reporter: lauren martinez, abc7news. ama: let's b patel p get this gives us flashbacks to september of 2020 when our orange skies were fueled by what would go on to be five of the largest wildfires in california history. how does that stack up to what's going on in the east coast right

now? sandhya: it's worse than what we dealt with even though it was really bad here in the bay area three years ago. let me show you the comparison. live picture from new york city. still a very murky view as smoke is choking the area. the air-quality index is 297. 2020. new york that this morning. a time lapse from this afternoon and evening. the skyline of new york city because of all that smoke. low-pressure spinning there. hasn't moved. air-quality warnings in effect for millions of people. as you look at the air-quality, it's hazardous for parts of the

northeast. smoke is going to remain a problem as we go into the next 24 hours. it does disperse a little bit over the weekend but not completely gone. i will be back to tell you about our air-quality and what's in store for the weekend, coming right up. dan: let's move to the late-night debate over the future of an 80's baseball stadium in las vegas. there's an emergency special session in the nevada state legislature tonight and things turn fiery fast. j.r. stone is in the newsroom following the fireworks. reporter: let's be honest. this feels like a reality television show. lawmakers in nevada who did not take up this issue in a regular session are now in a special session just called by the governor. they've been going for seven hours, some are very mad about this project. >> what's before us today is the same exact bill that we heard 10 days ago. to say i'm extremely

disappointed that no work has been done on this bill over the past 10 days is an understatement. >> the a's are saying they are going to have 27,000 fans a game. that's not going to happen with the worst team in baseball. and it will be cheap to go to these games. >> for a taxpayer-funded stadium, at the same time that the governor has vetoed funding for summer school, a bill to support children's mental health , a bill requiring paid family leave. reporter: this proclamation calls for the legislature to consider a financing and infrastructure project related to the construction of a major-league baseball stadium. the a's president got grilled by one of the state senators and did not have a direct answer to one of the questions. the only question he received. this is a $1.5 billion project. $380 million of that would be publicly funded. this would be a $30,000 --

30,000 seat stadium, the smallest in baseball. those evaluating the plan believe it would be successful. >> it's going to be the shiny new project on the las vegas strip. the ability to sell that place out over those first three years, yeah. i like our chances. every of those visitors eat in our restaurants, generate all of that revenue. reporter: the newly built allegiant stadium where the raiders playing in vegas was the top grossing stadium in the world last year. t-mobile arena and las vegas, fairly new itself, is the fourth top grossing arena in the world. so vegas has one in this category. as of right now, public comment is still happening. will they vote or push this off? we are keeping a close eye on that right now. back to you. dan: seems like a reality tv show. what a drama.

a young boy is recovering after a scary hike on mount diablo. park rangers say he had to be flown to the hospital after a rattlesnake bite.>> seven-year-a snake near the water tower on the bruce lee trail. dan: recordings. mount diablo park rangers first got called out to the trail at 5:00 this afternoon. no rangers saw the incident happened but symptoms line up with a rattlesnake bite. the boy was hiking with his family at the time. good news, he's expected to be ok. one ranger tells us, he's only heard of one confirmed rattlesnake bite in mount diablo state park. ama: to san jose. a 15-year-old student at willow glen high school has died. his name was justin. >> i saw him the other day recently. it's very shocking. he was a close friend. me and my friends chatted

through text and everything. it's very hard for us. ama: police say the team was killed in a collision with a car around 1:00 outside an apartment complex. the driver of the car was in her late teens and did have a valid license. investigators say she cooperated and was released. tomorrow, the san francisco sheriff's office will unveil a plan to help tackle the city sentinel crisis. the sheriff plans to employ deputies to areas where open-air drug dealing is rampant. the move comes amid a citywide drug crackdown involving police, chp, and the national guard. the announcement will be at 9:00. dan: tomorrow, you will be hearing a lot about the health of san francisco bay and our oceans around the world. we want to keep you ahead of what's happening so world ocean day on thursday is tonight. world ocean day tomorrow is a global celebration. a time designed to focus attention on conservation and protecting our oceans.

away from san francisco. it was originally scheduled to land tuesday night but had a diversion. after a long night stranded in russia, the plane full of passengers is almost to their destination. many loved ones waiting to receive them at sfo. they are scheduled to touch down at 12:14 a.m.. ama: governor newsom is getting an award -- in a war of words with the school board president over harvey milk. the board banned a book mentioning the gay rights activist who became the first openly gay elected official in 1977 get during a hearing, the school board president called milk a pedophile. newsom responded on twitter, calling the president ignorant. the school president fired back at governor newsom today, repeating his unfounded claim. >> i will ask you one simple question governor. you approve of any 33-year-old person regardless of their gender identity or sexual preference having a sexual
