morning. good thursday morning everyone. i'm andrea fujii in for rhiannon. i'm andrew dymburt. we begin with the air quality crisis in the northeast and midwest. 85 million americans on alert. air quality in new york city has hit the worst level on record due to smoke spreading from the canadian wildfires. new york looked more like mars yesterday. the state is taking new action today to protect the public. and now other parts of the country are bracing for conditions to get worse. just as we learn that more american firefighters are headed to the front lines in canada. this morning, millions of americans are being warned to stay indoors and to wear a mask when venturing outside home air purifying machines like this one, working overtime, detecting high amounts of pollutants as toxic air blankets. much of the northeast, all the result of hundreds of wildfires, fires burning in canada. very, very scary. just walking down the street and feeling like i'm going to have an asthma attack, it feels that's how bad the air quality is. the new york city skyline looked out of this

world, appearing orange and low visibility, delaying flights and health concerns, canceling major league baseball games, closing zoos, even shutting down some broadway shows. on a scale out of 500 new york city's air quality index hit 484 yesterday. the worst of anywhere on the planet. the epa considers anything above 300 hazardous. new york today is handing out 1 million n95 masks to the public when the levels of health concern that is clearly alarming for new yorkers. this is the highest level index of our knowledge since the 60s. the conditions are expected to last until this weekend. a weather system which remains locked in place is circulating all that smoky air. washington, d.c, could see some of the worst conditions today, while cities including pittsburgh and dayton, ohio, are bracing for worsening conditions tomorrow, though, doctors recommend minimizing time outdoors in affected areas . with this type of air quality and particularly the concerns with breathing issues, those that are most at risk are those

that have underlying chronic pulmonary issues. so asthma patients, patients that have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic bronchitis and others. this video shows where the fires are burning in canada, which is not currently in a drought. but experts say persistent heat in recent weeks fueled these flames. canada was the epicenter of a significant heat anomaly last month, where areas seen here in dark red experienced temperatures about 40 degrees above average. canada's prime minister announced last night that hundreds of american firefighters have now joined the frontlines with many more on the way. sources tell abc news former president trump has been informed that he is the target of the investigation into his handling of classified documents . they say trump has received a letter from special counsel jack smith, a letter that typically puts a person on notice that they're likely to face indictment. it comes after sources revealed trump's legal team met with justice department officials monday and yesterday, a former trump spokesman appeared before a grand jury in miami, which is hearing evidence

in the documents case. former vice president mike pence is attacking his former boss like we've never seen before. he went after trump during a town hall last night hours after launching his own president campaign. abc's linsey watts has the highlights. linsey, good morning . andrew good morning, mike. pence wasted no time going after his former boss, claiming donald trump is unfit to be president again. mike pence ended his first day as a presidential candidate by addressing his fallout with the person who made him a vice president. i said today president trump was wrong then. he's wrong now. during a cnn town hall last night, pence criticized trump for his actions on january 6th, insisting trump was wrong to ask him to overturn some electoral college votes. and i said today that i felt that he was he was asking me to choose between him and the constitution. i chose the constitution. but pence walked a fine line regarding trump's legal troubles, saying the justice department should not indict trump over his handling

of classified documents because it would be, quote, terribly divisive. one question stumping pence was on gun violence after he called for mass shooters to face the death penalty within a year and a half of their crime. a lot of people who are mass shooters, they go in with the intention to die. so how would the threat of execution even be a deterrent? well i stories just as closely as you do. i just believe in the deterrent of the law. polls show trump leads the republican primary field by more than 20 points. pence has pledged to support whomever wins the nomination, despite saying trump isn't fit to serve again. how can you say that you would support him if he's the nominee? well, because i don't think donald trump's going to be the nominee. what if he is the republican party? i don't think he's going to be the nominee. what if he is? i have great confidence in republican primary voters. pence was also asked if he's elected, would he pardon trump? he didn't answer that one. andrew lindsay, thank you.

investigate in minnesota are working to identify human remains, possibly those of a missing mother. for more than two months, madeleine kingsbury was last seen in late march, dropping off her kids at daycare . police described her disappearance as involuntary. the remains were found about 45 miles from where she was last seen and her ex-boyfriend and father of her children has now been arrested on murder charges. adam fravel told police he left their home the day of kingsbury's disappearance and when he returned, she wasn't there. more rescues are underway in southern ukraine after that dam collapse widely blamed on russia. entire communities have been cut off with no power, food or clean drinking water. more than 4000 people have been evacuated and at least three were killed. nearby areas are littered with dead fish. experts say rebuilding the dam could take five years. as pope francis is recovering in the hospital after successful abdominal surgery. he after his weekly audience yesterday, francis underwent a three hour procedure to repair a hernia, his doctors

say shortly after his surgery, francis was awakened, joking. and the vatican says last night went well. a former sheriff's deputy in florida accused of doing nothing during the parkland school massacre in 2018 is now on trial. prosecutors and the defense are offering their take on what scott peterson did or didn't do on that fateful day while responding to the attack. here's abc's derrick dennis. this morning, the pain and anguish of the 2018 massacre at marjory stoneman douglas high school in parkland, florida, on display in a local courtroom. my god, the deaths of 14 students and three staff members blamed in part on former sheriff's deputy and school resource officer scott peterson, who's now on trial, accused of taking cover instead of taking action to stop the shooter. the prosecutor in his opening statement characterized peterson as a coward for waiting outside while the shooter took lives. active shooter situation when you go toward the gunshots or

the train to go toward those shots to find that shooter, because every shot could be a death, the defendant will never leave that alcove. defense attorney mark eiglarsh says peterson, a 32 year veteran officer, was the first to call in a code red, but did not know where the shots were coming from, which building or even which direction. there was a pronounced announced echo and reverberation that the witnesses will talk about that left them hearing the same shots and wondering where is that coming from? survivors testifying about the horror. shots were flying through the glass window of the door that ran down to down to the handle of the door. and they were flying all over our classroom. i was just waiting for the police. it was the longest 20 minutes of my entire life. peterson's trial is

she picked up and heard a voice that sounded exactly like him. and he said, grandma, i broke my nose. he said he'd been in an accident and handed the phone to his attorney, who told her her grandson had been arrested for hitting another car and injuring a pregnant woman. it was, of course, very shook up. the lawyer offered a solution if you pay a cash bond today $9,200, the charges will be dropped. why were you so convinced this was real? because they had his voice down to perfection. shirley went to the bank and got the cash. she was told to tape up the money in a box ring video shows her later meeting with a woman just outside camera range with the box. moments later, the attorney told her the pregnant woman's baby had died. the charges were more serious and another $5,000 were needed. i was hysterical, almost. i cried. this lady had lost a baby. and then my grandson was going to be charged with murder. she made another

trip to the bank, not realizing the scam until she finally called her grandson. i think it's absolute highly shameful. it's a scam that's on the rise with artificial intelligence now able to create a voice clone of anyone using very little material. experts say even a short instagram or tiktok video is all that's needed to replicate a voice. most people have some form of an online identity and have probably spoken in some way in some aspect that's been recorded, especially if you're under the age of 25. experts suggest keeping your social media profiles private so scammers can't get access to your voice. and if you get a call from a loved one asking for money, double check the number. amazon is reportedly moving forward with a plan to introduce ads to its prime video streaming service, the wall street journal reports the company is looking to generate more revenue from entertainment. it's not clear yet how much the ad supported plan would cost or if it will affect amazon prime members who currently get the service for free. a rare ruby is going up for auction today, the largest ever to go to auction. sotheby's
