morning, religious broadcaster pat robertson has died. he led the christian coalition and ran for president in 1980 eight, founding the christian broadcasting network and was well known for hosting the talk show the 700 club for 55 years and continue to make appearances on that show over the last couple of years. he was 93. kumasi: passengers stranded in russia on an air india flight are finally on american soil this morning, landing just after midnight at sfo. amanda is there live this morning. i can imagine there were a lot of feelings. amanda: to see the emotion captured on camera? i can't imagine. the days long detour, they were supposed to see each other days ago. all of that time spent waiting. certainly a lot of relief for passengers and their families. happy to report that the flight made it to its final destination here just after midnight.

all of this is coming after that emergency landing at a russian airport over engine trouble. air india flight 173 took off from delhi and was scheduled to win the same day. the emergency landing put the passengers in a remote location of the country and rot up a lot of concern. then we started to see social media filled with passenger photos and videos of sleeping arrangements and accommodations they're showing varying degrees of discomfort. some travelers described to being treated well by air india and russian authorities but others had some complaints. one thing is certain, everyone is relieved to have arrived safely, passengers speaking shortly after landing and connecting with loved ones. >> there was a school russians were nice, giving us food.

definitely we were traumatized. we were not sure how long it would take and it is russia, so we were worried about that. the thing is, now we are here and we have reached safety. amanda: we are told many of the 316 passengers were helping each other as they waited for the air india flight to reach them and complete the trip. we heard from the passengers who said that through the entire experience it felt like they really formed a family with one another. everyone on flight 173, that's what they are talking about. reporting live, amanda del castillo io. reggie: thank you. new details about the case accused -- of the man accused of killing jasper wu on a freeway. pamela price has dropped the special circumstances from the

murder charges. but the suspects still lengthy lifetime prison sentences as they are accused of trying to shoot someone in another car when they instead struck jasper as he rode in the backseat of his families car on 880 in november of 2021. if convicted, bevins bases 206 to five years to life. green faces 175 years to life. dropping special circumstances meaning -- means that they would not face the death penalty of california resumed executions. kumasi: yesterday contra costa county prosecutors moved to dismiss a case saying that it was tainted by the officers involved. they faced charges mutilation in the connection to a death of a 25-year-old. her body was found burned on the trail last october.

prosecutors say the case relied heavily on the investigative work of the officers associated with the communications. they said they reviewed the roles of the case and that they no longer had confidence in the integrity of the prosecution. the case could be one of the first felony cases to be dropped because of the texting scandal as experts say thousands of cases need to be reviewed and those will likely be the largest ever in u.s. history. the chief public defender ellen mcdonald tells abc news that they are hiring more staff to it and -- review any case that involves any officers linked to the scandal in the process could take several years with a review going back to the beginning of each officer's career in the county. >> some of them did not just work at antioch. before that they worked at other police agencies. we will be doing a thorough review of any case they were involved in during their career as a police officer. kumasi: she says the review will

first focus on cases involving people currently in jail or prison and next those on probation or parole. and then those with a prior conviction on the record. reggie: happening today, more law enforcement is expected to be deployed in the crackdown on drug use. deputies will be coming from the emergency services unit two areas where open air drug dealing is rampant. the sheriffs office says deputies in the unit have specialized in intervention training. they are joining the crackdown that has been going on for more than a month. today's announcement will be at 9 a.m. at civic center plaza. kumasi: in the last 30 minutes the faa has pause flights for several airports because of low visibility, covering much of the east coast, the thick fires in canada, the smoke. jobina has more on the impact. jobina: it's so interesting to

reggie: a new development in the investigation into donald trump's handling of classified documents. a prosecutor jack smith sent trump a letter officially informing him that he's a target of the investigation. trump has continued to deny any wrongdoing as a federal grand jury heard from another grand witness yesterday who served as a spokesman for trump after the presidency. in a tweet he says it's all in attempt to go after trump.

actor and comedian popular for his rolls on bob's burgers and arrested development has been charged for his alleged role in the january 6 insurrection. jeh johnson was arrested yesterday nla, facing charges for several crimes including civil disorder, disorderly conduct and they identified him they said from images taken at the capital that day. he was the voice of jimmy pesto on bob's burgers and has since been fired from the show. genentech confirms they plan t sell their sprawling facility in vacaville, retaining the 800 employees that work there but plan to move operations to locations in san diego, or kentucky, three months after they announced plans to shut down their south san francisco plan and lay off more than 260 workers. in 2020 they laid off nearly 500 employees at the same location.

kumasi: the organization says we could see the warmest year locally in five years and this morning we are looking into what it could mean for the bay area and fire season . they recently released a global climate update from 2023 to 2027 saying it will be hot with a 100% certainty and experts predicting that in the next five years we will see the warmest year because of global warming and el niño conditions. our wet winter has produced more fuel than in years past and hotter temperatures have higher risks. forest management could be the key to mitigating the concern. >> including things like bringing in prescribed fire, low severity fire, thinning the forest to make them healthier and more akin to what they would have been 100 years ago before they were logged. kumasi: b their work now is the best chance for the forest to survive.

we have heard many stories from the 216 passengers who were on board flight 173. while they were waiting, a further air india flight came to complete the trip. we know that they were chipping in to help each other during the time. this was of course the case after the emergency landing in russia over engine trouble. the location of the emergency landing put the passengers in a remote location but brought up a lot of concern over the ongoing war in ukraine. then we saw social media filled with passenger photos and videos of sleeping arrangements and accommodations there showing varying degrees of discomfort but some travelers explained they had been treated well by air india and russian authorities, though others had complaints. tuesday the original air india flight, 173, took off from delhi and was scheduled to land the same day at sfo. it is now thursday morning, they

are finally here and we caught up with passengers shortly after their flight landed. of the day we made it home and it's fine. a lot of us said it was kind of like a nightmare. it was really scary when they had to dump the fuel in the middle of the flight. but then we landed. it was nice. but then you know the whole situation there was just really bad. amanda: air india twitter after the plane landed, thinking a long list of groups including government agencies, regulatory authorities, staff and partners involved in supporting the long journey and those who assisted with care while they all waited. we know that this was a days long detour. all of those family reunions captured on camera. we reached out to air india to ask what type of compensation the passengers might see in the

future and we are still waiting for that response. for now, reporting live, amanda del castillo. reggie: nevada state legislature meeting again today as they voted yesterday on the future of the a's proposed ballpark in vegas. the emergency session went on for seven hours. gloria rodríguez is here with all of that. gloria? gloria: lawmakers are expected to take it up again this morning as the special session was called upon by the governor after it wasn't taken up in a rate your letter session, stomach stressing anger over the proposed project as it called for the legislature to consider a financing and infrastructure project related to the construction of a major-league baseball stadium in las vegas. a $1.5 billion project with 30,000 seats, making it the smallest stadium in baseball. $380 million of that would be publicly funded.

there were people on both sides speaking up. >> a taxpayer-funded stadium at the same time that the governor has vetoed funding for summer school, a bill to support children's mental health, a bill requiring paid family leave? >> it's going to be the shiny new project on the strip. the ability to sell that place out over those first three years, yeah i like our chances. everyone of those visitors stay in our hotel rooms, eat in our restaurants, generate revenue. gloria: during public they said ticket prices will not be cheap. the newly built allegiance stadium where the raiders play was the top grossing stadium in the world last year. t-mobile arena in las vegas is fairly new and is the fourth top grossing arena in the world. the special session starts

11:30 this morning. kumasi: thank you. fans of the a's are not going down without a fight. diehards are showing support for the team with a reverse boycott. the nonprofit organization is calling on fans to pack the stadium next tuesday and are hoping to raise enough money to hand out shirts for the boycott. they say it's a message to the owner, asking him to sell the team. >> what's the point of owning a major-league franchise when you don't invest in it. this is like urgency time for fans. kumasi: we also spoke with the president of save oakland sports who says he is confident that tuesday night's game will be a sellout of all 50,000 seats and he is holding out hope that the las vegas deal will fall apart. reggie: family of a 23-year-old woman whose disappearance made national headlines say they can finally lay her to rest.

she went missing after visiting her ex boyfriend in antioch, police say he killed her and spread her remains in multiple locations and he was later killed by officers in seattle trying to serve him with an arrest warrant. autopsy and forensic tests have been completed and the remains are being returned to her family. they are inviting the public to a memorial service june 17 at the diablo valley funeral services in concord at 3 p.m.. i should say the funeral will be held at in front of the diablo valley funeral home chapel. kumasi: new developments in the case of a peninsula couple killed in a fatal crash last fall. family members announced they filed a wrongful death lawsuit on behalf of the twin daughters. the twins survived the crash in their parents were killed when the car allegedly involved in a street race slammed into the family vehicle last november.

the suit targets the 17-year-old driver of the vehicle and his parents and the other alleged street racers as well as passengers in both cars. >> the goal of the family with this is the opportunity to shed light on the epidemic we have of teenagers driving dangerously. if we can have one person make a decision to not do something like this, we have reached our goal. kumasi: involved were arrested and charged with second-degree murder. reggie: oakland police attempting to stop side shows with hardened yellow polls the intersections. the mayor calls them commonsense solutions and that the work was done thanks to funding she won while on city council. kumasi: the medical examiner asking for help in identifying a

woman who was killed last month. they put together this sketch and are hoping to find someone who might know her. she was hit by a car may 14 in san jose in the northbound lanes of i-8 hundred 80 past stevens creek labarge. so take a look. the county says she is somewhere between 40 and 50, five foot one inch, 110 pounds. you are asked to contact the medical examiner if you know who it might be. reggie: in the east bay a boy had to be lifted to the capital after being hit by a rattlesnake at a state park, saying the rattlesnake bite is not confirmed because nobody saw the snake but that it is likely based on the symptoms he was showing. officials have not released his condition but they say that he is stable. reggie: runt -- kumasi: desantis coming to california on the same day that president biden will be visiting the bay area. our media partner reports gop supporters are holding a

breakfast for desantis in sacramento on june 19 and is will be in the bay area that they area no details on his trip have been announced. political experts say this is likely unintentional as each would not want to share the limelight. reggie: the collapse of the largest reservoir in ukraine has sparked fears of an ecological catastrophe, forcing 1400 people to evacuate. jobina: the collapse of the dam is threatening supplies as flooding inundates farmland and cities. of the ukrainian president says that russia faces criminal liability and they are investigating it as a case of what they call eco-side, criminal environmental destruction. gavin and moscow have traded accusation over the destruction of the dam and so far it is not clear if it was deliberately attacked or if the breach was the result of a structural failure.
