shooting. we hear from people who live blocks away from where shots were fired in san francisco's mission district. good morning. thanks for joining us on this saturday, june 10. i am liz kreutz. let's start with a quick look at the weather with meteorologist shayla girardin. good morning. shayla: good morning. it is a really cool start to the morning with the marine layer with us for the next several hours. we are all in the 50's as you head out the door. a couple of degrees cooler than this time yesterday. by this afternoon, and i stay. still cloud cover for many of us. temperatures will be warmer yesterday. we are still talking about below average temperatures. we have low-pressure moving through. i will have the forecast later in the show. liz: thank you. nine people are recovering after they were struck by gunfire in a

shooting in the mission district. all are expected to survive. please tell us the suspect or suspects opened fire just after 9:00 last night during a block party at 24th and treat avenue. when officers arrived, they found multiple victims with gunshot wounds. as of right now, there is no suspect information available. police say the incident appears to be targeted and there is no threat to the public at this time. abc7news spoke to an supervisor ronin. >> i live in the neighborhood. i heard the sirens. and i said, this is quite an outlier. this is generally a safe neighborhood. i was out here with my three-year-old an hour ago. obviously very shook up and concerned for the victims. this is an extreme case. we hope to not see this anymore.

liz: one of the victims did undergo surgery last night. eight other victims were treated for non-life-threatening injuries. abc 7 is following this developing story. to stay up-to-date on this and other stories, download our news apps to get mobile news alerts straight to your phone. now to the latest incident involving a driverless car suddenly coming to a stop in san francisco and then being stuck in the middle-of-the-road for hours. this comes amid a debate among government leaders on how to regulate the vehicles. tim johns spoke with someone who witnessed the incident. reporter: he was taking his husband to work friday morning when he noticed something bizarre stuck in the middle-of-the-road. >> this is kind of strange. i started videotaping. >> the video shows a driverless cruise car stopped on 9th street in san francisco not far from the highway 101 exit.

he says it was in the middle of the street for two hours and was worried about the safety risk. >> there are a lot of e.m.t.'s and fire trucks that go through here, a lot of police go through here. it is not safe to have this area of the street backed up. reporter: he tells me tries reaching out multiple times and walked over to one of the offices blocks away. he says after receiving little help, he decided to contact sfmta. >> they came out before them and cited the vehicle. reporter: he is reaching out because of the safety risk he believes the vehicle post. he is not the only one who has spoken out. several san francisco city officials have raised questions about the need for more regulation on driverless vehicles. cruise sent abc 7 news a statement.

he thinks more oversight is the way to go. >> i would like to see some kind of legislation that enforces the need for transparency from these technology companies and forces them to have some way to contact them in case of emergency. reporter: tim johns, abc7news. liz: crews received authorization last june to roll out 30 vehicles that can carry passengers in select parts of san francisco. waymo can operate in several cities in the south bay and the peninsula. both have applied to operate around the clock. the cpuc has a hearing scheduled for june 29. today, there is a benefit to help the family of the mother and children killed in what police are calling a murder-suicide. a family partnered with l

-- el patio for a taco sale. the three bodies were found inside the apartment in fremont on tuesday. police say the boy and girl were killed. they believe the mother died by suicide. the family currently has a gofundme page set up. they raised nearly $18,000 of the $50,000 goal. in the south bay, a man died on his honeymoon in hawaii while snorkeling. those who knew the couple say thieves stole everything they had during the tragic accident. lauren martinez has the story. reporter: tragedy struck twice for a self a couple on their honeymoon. the abc station in hawaii set on june 1 the newlyweds were snorkeling off the shore of electric beach when the man disappeared under water and drowned. the honolulu emergency services said first responders

transported the man to a hospital where he died. >> it is tragic to see these circumstances. reporter: a gofundme page identified the man. it reads, as if this cannot be worse, all of their belongings were stolen. the thieves took their cell phones, wallets, money, clothing , they even stole their car rental. >> it is unreal. you question that person as a human being. reporter: friends were not ready to comment on camera but described him as nothing short of an amazing person. abc 7 reached out to honolulu police for an update on the couple's personal belongings taken during a devastating time. an employee from the dive shop released this statement describing the beach where it happened.

in the south, lauren martinez, abc7news. liz: very sad story. the shuttered holy names campus has a new owner. a real estate firm bought it and plans on finding new tenants to use it for academic purposes. it closed last month citing declining enrollment and financial problems brought on by the pandemic. it called the open hills location home since 1987. the site where people lost lives in the ghost ship fire is set to be replaced by housing. it was bought for more than $2 million last month according to the chronicle. the nonprofit plans to build housing and a memorial for victims of the fire. in december of 2016, more than 100 people were attending a music event when a fire erupted inside the warehouse. the building for the new development could begin as early as 2025.

bart writers -- paying more because of inflation. part of the deficit is due to a decline in ridership due to the pandemic. they are asking governor newsom for a $5 billion bailout. they expect the increase in fares to bring in $26 million through july of 2024. they say the money is desperately needed. >> paying more for energy, the electricity to run the trains, that is one of the big cost drivers we have. we need to pay our workers a living wage. also just the fixed costs we have of a train with 50 stations. liz: the average fare of $4.20 will be going up by $.23 in january. the southbound lanes of 680 are closed for roadwork. they are replacing pavement. sit-down started last night. lanes -- the shutdown started

place. the nascar cup series is bringing the roar back to sonoma raceway this weekend. her fans, it is everything. >> i am a diehard fan. i have been coming here since 1998. >> we have a ton of nascar fans in northern california. reporter: where else can you get this close to the cars and drivers? he is here for the 2-mile track packed with twists and turns. >> most tracks do not have the elevation changes at sonoma. a lot of blind rolling corners. you drive up the hill and then down the hill. reporter: more than 80,000 fans are expected this weekend. traffic was already tough getting here friday afternoon. nascar fans know there are a couple of must haves coming to the racetrack. number one, sunglasses. number two, ear protection because you will need it.

she spent a morning getting a close look at the problem. reporter: on this clear san francisco morning, we decided to ride on the oldest publicly operated transit system in america. muni, paying using my clipper card. it is reassuring to see most lines are back to near pre-pandemic levels. also encouraging is this recent statement by the executive director of the san francisco municipal transportation agency who oversees muni. >> most people are still paying as they did pre-covid. reporter: paying, did he say? because we had our doubts, we decided to record who paid and who did not. here we go. these two women did not pay. neither did he. no, this couple walked right on without paying. this for some reason his clipper card

never worked. nope, too busy talking on the phone. no, no. this passenger pai clipper card but the person behind her did not. no. no. no. and no. and one more no. that is $12 50 cents that muni did not collect from those five people. we estimated about 3/4 people who got on the bus never paid. a muni driver told us a good day for her is when 40% of the passengers pay. >> if i were pressed and have anything to pay with, i would do the same thing. reporter: some are candid about the reason for not paying. >> post-pandemic, it is kind of the norm as far as i have seen.

especially when it goes up and down market. i don't know. people don't pay, so i don't know. [laughter] reporter: he clarified there are other ways to pay that perhaps we did not catch on camera. >> we have invented new instruments. you can download muni mobile and pay with your phone rather than your clipper card. reporter: have you ever heard of the muni mobile app? >> yes. reporter: do you use it? >> no. reporter: we finally found a passenger using it, and honest law-abiding tourist who had a one-day pass on his phone. there are people who feel because others are not paying, why should i? >> absolutely. that is the reason. reporter: that attitude shift is what in psychology is often referred to as crowd behavior. >> we still try to pay as much as we can. it just gets to a point where it is like, what is the point?

you know? reporter: because bus drivers have been assaulted in the past trying to collect a fair, it is understandable they do not engage with anyone who refuses to pay. that is the responsibility of the fare inspectors who are supposed to ask passengers to show proof of payment. >> we have inspectors out every day collecting good data about who is paying and who is not. reporter: when is the last time you saw an enforcement officer on muni? >> i would say probably a year ago on a muni train, not a bus. reporter: here is a problem with not paying. transit fares represent 18% of revenue or $219 million. that is part of the reason why muni had a $134 million deficit in 2022. too many numbers for you, you say? perhaps she will be interested

in knowing how muni is seriously -- perhaps you will be interested in knowing how muni is seriously thinking about addressing the shortfall. listen up because this will likely affect you. extend the hours of parking meters on weekdays to include nights, and on sundays. that is 28,000 parking meters that could potentially be active on sundays. >> that would bring in an extra $18 million a year. that is enough to save three lines. reporter: other proposals include expanding neighborhood parking permits, increased taxes on offstreet parking in downtown garages. another idea circulated in the past is downtown congestion pricing, except that after the pandemic, downtown has been slow to recover. so many proposals out there. why not do something simple like enforce fares? >> we should but fare evasion is a small piece of the problem.

even if we had 100% compliance, that would not solve this problem. we need the state to help. reporter: the federal stimulus money's that have kept muni afloat are expected to run out. sfmta is hoping provide short-term relief funds. if not, the transit agency may have to scale back to pandemic levels of service when only 40% of routes were up and running. >> we cannot have them fall apart. reporter: leanne melendez, abc7news. liz: oki after a shooting overnight in the mission district. air quality alerts, which states are still dealing with toxic air as fires continue in canada?

former president expected to be back on the campaign trail today, one day after the unsealing of the 37-count indictment. for the first time, a former u.s. president is facing federal criminal charges including willful retention of government documents, conspiracy, and obstruction. an aide to the former president has also been charged. reporter: donald trump facing a 37-count indictment, unsealed by the special counsel following an investigation into the former president's alleged mishandling of classified records. prosecutors saying trump was personally involved in the willful retention of government records after leaving office and obstructed authorities efforts to retrieve them. the indictment alleges while he gathered materials in boxes, including information regarding

defense and weapons capabilities on both united states and foreign countries, united states nuclear programs, potential vulnerabilities of the united states and its allies to military attack, and plans for possible retaliation in response to a foreign attack. the classified documents allegedly packed into boxes and stored at his private club at mar-a-lago in florida which hosted events for thousands of guests. the indictment included images of documents allegedly unsecured in a bathroom, a ballroom, and a shower. special counsel jack smith saying trump is innocent until proven guilty but also saying the laws apply to everyone. >> our laws that protect national defense information are critical to the safety and security of the united states and must be enforced. reported want the indictment alleges on two separate occasions, trump showed military

documents to people who did not have security clearances to see them. just hours before the charges were revealed, trump was spotted on the golf course at his club in new jersey. he has insisted he has done nothing wrong. >> i am innocent and we will prove that very soundly and hopefully quickly. reporter: trump is scheduled for arraignment in miami federal court on tuesday. liz: pled not guilty to extortion and wire fraud in connection to the 2005 disappearance of natalee holloway. he was extradited to the thursday and appeared in alabama federal court yesterday. the dutch national is accused of trying to extort her mother. officials say he asked for 200 $50,000 in exchange for the location of her body. according to a 2010 sting operation, he gave a false story after he received a portion of the money. knew this money, the four

indigenous children who went missing after their plane crashed in the colombian jungle last month have been found alive. the children were alive after missing for 40 days. the colombian president announced the news on his twitter account. all three adults including the children's mother and pilot did not survive. air quality alerts across 20 states right now. smoky air is plaguing major cities as the smoke is drifting south from canadian fires. reporter: from lingering haze in new york city to barely visible bridges in philadelphia, a thick plume of smoke still shrouding major cities in america. similar conditions in cleveland, baltimore, and washington, d.c. a so-called code purple issued in the nation's capital signaling hazardous air quality.

>> they told me it was code purple. i thought it was getting better. we are not even used to the language to deal with this type of air quality. reporter: for air quality extending as far south as memphis and west to st. louis and indianapolis. the air quality index hitting 491 on the 1-500 scale, even worse than new york city's on wednesday. schools in new york city and philadelphia switching to remote learning. parents encouraged to watch for signs of shortness of breath. people encouraged to stay indoors or mask up. >> this mask can make a difference. reporter: the good news is conditions are slowly improving in some areas with the winds shifting and smoke starting to move out of the u.s., eventually north back to canada. liz: still ahead, could we see the warmest year on record?

jose. the proliferation -- ahead of the work did cause controversy among the un-housed and their advocates. officials say this is a matter of public safety. reporter: floodwaters in 2017 devastated many san jose neighborhoods and highlighted the need to improve waterways. this month, valley water starts a project to keep it from happening again. >> we need to make sure the areas are protected from potential floodwaters. reporter: in just days, the nine-mile stretch of coyote creek will be prepared and construction will start right after. >> the goal is to have the first phase completed by the fall of 2024. we will start construction in 2025 and have that completed by 2027. reporter: while communication about the project continues, it has stirred up some controversy. un-housed people had to clear the area.

as we first reported in early april, they voted to give san jose $4.8 million to do the work. some advocates say they understand the work has to be done but say those living along the creek were not given proper alternatives. >> broken promises and broken people. reporter: the san jose housing department says it has successfully housed 30 people at a city-owned interim housing site. they added additional shelter opportunities will be based on availability. they say the project has to start now because it is tied in with the retrofit project currently underway. >> the timing of the projects have to meet so if there are delays on the coyote creek protection project it does not delay the other. reporter: community meetings started tuesday with another plan june 14. zach fuentes, abc7news. liz: the fda panel voted

unanimously to approve the alzheimer's drug. the move paves the way for the medication to be considered for full fda approval. the medication is one first dementia drugs that appear to slow the progression of cognitive decline. the fda decision is expected by july 6. the world medial roger quote organization -- meteorological organization has news bay when it comes to fire season. reporter: another day of june gloom across the bay area. temperatures mostly in the 70's not exactly commonplace this time of year. >> across the be hot this time of year. i think for those places, it is great. along the coast, it would be nice to see more sunshine.

reporter: sunshine and warmer temperatures could be here before you know it. the recently released climate update says it is going to get hot with nearly a 100% certainty experts predict in the next five years earth will see the warmest year on record due to global warming and el niño conditions. >> that means some of the warm ocean temperature goes closer to the atmosphere. we expect the atmosphere to warmer. reporter: have seen our temperatures rise steadily the last few years. this report shows we could see bigger changes for our bay area whether. >> i would not be surprised to see over the next few summers that we are going to experience very hot temperature extremes and may be breaking records like we have never seen before. reporter: he says that does not

winning streak. have a great weekend, everybody. i am larry beil. liz: today in san mateo, the 11th annual pride celebration is happening. it returns in person. this year's theme is "free to be me." the free fam will include live entertainment, a d.j., food trucks, vendors, and resources to help. it starts at 11:00 this morning and goes until 5:00. let's get a check of the forecast with meteorologist shayla girardin. good morning. shayla: good morning. a nice afternoon heading our way. starting out with fog and low clouds. all of us noticing the cloudy skies to start. temperatures will stay below average again. it will be warmer than yesterday but not quite average yet. isolated showers possible this afternoon. this is a very slight chance.

we are tracking the risk for thunderstorms but not very high. any accumulation will much. here is why. you can see the cloud coverage to start the morning. we are starting to see showers far east of us out in sonora this morning. in the bay area, just watching the marine layer. cloudy and cool to start. some areas so drizzle around san francisco. the cloud cover is going to stick around for the rest of the morning and into the early afternoon. we have this low-pressure system off the coast keeping the marine layer heavy and temperatures below average again. in the afternoon, a slight chance of thunderstorms especially around bear valley. that will move out later this afternoon. a slight chance for clearing for some areas but especially along the beaches. you will stay cloudy over the day and by tomorrow morning, we are all feeling the marine layer. sunday afternoon, we could see

more clearing than today. temperatures today, it will be a nice one. 60's and 70's for most of us. these are below average but warmer than yesterday. a lot of you are getting a break from the cloud cover so you will see a little bit of sun this afternoon. overnight lows similar to last night. temperatures dipping into the 50's. cloud cover will move in again. really cloudy skies to start tomorrow. pretty cool for us. all of us will be in the 50's this evening. jumping ahead to the seven-day forecast. nice conditions today. inland making it to the 80's. the trough of low pressure will keep us cool the next few days. temps below average. when that moves out, we start to warm up again making it to the 80's with more sunshine next week. in the bay and along the coast, cooler for you. you guys are only going to see highs this week making it to the 50's and 60's.

liz: breaking news. abc news has confirmed the death of the man known as the unabomber. he was found dead in his prison cell early this morning. for almost 20 years from 1978 to 1996, he mounted a campaign of terror mailing bombs to university professors and airline and advertising executives. three people were killed and two dozen others injured. he was arrested in 1996 and
