dubbed the unabomber died today. also, new clues today in the shooting that wounded nine people in san francisco. the connection investigators made in the case. and a pride first in the bay area. abc 7 news at starts right now. >> building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions, this is abc 7 news. >> he planted bombs, terrorized a nation, and eluded the decades. kaczynski died today while serving a life sentence.

his targets here in the bay area. thanks for joining us. diane j.r. stone. the convicted terrorist known as the unabomber died today in federal prison. he was 80 one years old. three people were killed dozens others were injured in those moments. abc reporter cornell barnard is in the studio. he spoke earlier with the sun of a victim. cornell: jonathan, who lives in the north bay, says the unabomber's reign of terror impacted his family greatly after hisrget almost 30 years ago. >> my first reaction was that finally we can close the chapter on this part of our life. cornell: ted kaczynski, the death means closure for his family. >> i was glad to hear the news. cornell: his father, a ucsf geneticist, was a target of the unabomber in 1993 when a package was delivered to the family's tiburon home. >> i was driving across the golden gate bridge when i was called by my on, i believe, said mike father had opened a mail

bomb. cornell: dr. epstein was injured and lost fingers in the blast. his father's research was focused on understanding down syndrome. >> the irony of his being targeted is my father was not involved in engineering or some of the things people feared at that time. cornell: kaczynski served eight life sentences after pleading guilty. three people were killed, 23 others wounded. kaczynski, who lived as a recluse in a sparse cabin in montana, explained his motivation for the killings as being rooted in hatred of the modern world and technology to he said an essay to the fbi explaining his motives, which we can known as the unabomber manifest her. >> they called him the unabomber, the fbi did, some of his targets were universities. cornell: former abc 7 news reporter laura anthony cover the trials in sacrament up your she recalled kaczynski's demeanor in court was far from the images of the accused terrorist many remember after his capture. laura: unlike a lot of defendants who you see in court, he would look at the gallery, he would look at us sitting down, and then nod and smile. it was almost like, you know, we were going to have coffee with

him that day. cornell: jonathan epstein says for him, the legacy of the unabomber is over. >> he is clearly a disturbed man , a very bright guy who went the wrong way mentally. it speaks to the danger of untreated mental illness. my hope is that this is the last interview i do on the subject of ted kaczynski. j.r.: jonathan says his father returned to work after a long recovery. he passed away in 2011. he said his father did not want to be defined as a unabomber victim, instead by his contribution to science. in the newsroom, cornell barnard, abc 7 news. j.r.: you told me earlier this is one of the first big stories you reported on. what do you remember about the case against is in ski unfolded. sure could ever never intense security surrounding the federal courthouse, but my vivid memory was the unabomber's cabin which was trucked in from antenna to lead jurors have a look at it.

the cabin, that term is a generous term, because that was a tiny shack, with no running water or electricity. it is hard to believe that is where those bombs were made. j.r.: thanks for that. develop -- development's on t shooting in last nights mission district, nine people were hurt all of the victims are expected to be ok. the shooting happened after 9:00 p.m. during a block party at treat avenue and 24th street. police chief will scott says there is now a visible police presence in the area. investigators believe the shooting was a targeted incident and say there is no threat to the public. it is also reportedly connected to an incident that happened two weeks ago during carnaval. san francisco mayor london breed the incident this afternoon. mayor breed: i think that, you know, what we are seeing in san francisco, when we look at the data the number of violent , crimes have declined.

this is heartbreaking and challenging not just for the mission community but for our city as a whole j.r.: according to mission locals, police reportedly reviewed surveillance video and identified a possible suspect. no arrests have been made. shortly after the incident, abc 7 news spoke to santiago lerma, an aide to san francisco supervisor hilary ronen. lerma lives close by and heard those gunshots. thank iago: -- santa iago: this is quite an outlier. this is generally a very safe neighborhood. i was out here with my three month old zone about an hour ago obviously shook up and concern for the victims, but, you know, this is an extreme case, and we hope to not see this anymore. j.r.: lerma also says there was a police response to the original incident during carnaval, which led investigators to connect the two cases. in the east bay, organizations in oakland continue efforts to get more guns off the streets. the police department joint

community groups for a gun buyback event today, gunston gardens offered $300 gift cards for each gun that was turned in, as well as tickets to upcoming oakland a's games. oakland mayor zhang tao made an appearance at today's event. 42 guns were collected today. they will be melted down and refurbished into gardening tools. donald trump made his first public appearances today since his federal indictment, calling it a "political hit job." here is abc news reporter phil lipof with the latest on the investigation and what the former president has to say about it. phil: former president trump making his first public appearances for the first time since the federal indictment against him was unsealed, speaking to supporters in georgia and north carolina. mr. trump: we stand up against the open border fanatics, the radical left democrats, their lawless prosecutors. every time i fly over a blue

city leaders say they deserve to be remembered. about 80 people came out to attend the ceremony. every year, the bodies of approximately 140 people who die in sonoma county go unclaimed at the corner, local hospitals, and funeral homes. happening now, two closers are impacting the drive in parts of the bay area, the first in pleasanton. southbound lanes of 680 are closed for roadwork. crews are replacing pavement. the shutdown started last night, and lanes are scheduled to reopen monday at 4:00 a.m. detours are in place. the closure only impacts southbound lanes. a track trick shift in the north bay on highway 101 southbound in marin county. san antonio road on and off ras will be closed from 00 tonight until 4:00 a.m. tomorrow as part of the final phase of a decade-long widening project. also starting today, southbound traffic is being diverted onto new elevated landings from san

j.r.: welcome back. the number of deaths and serious injuries associated with tesla's autopilot technology is up significantly. that is according to an analysis i federal data by the "washington post co. "the post" reports 76 crashes involving autopilot in the u.s. since 2019 to 17 were fatal. the national highway association says it is unclear whether technology is the cause.
