he targeted some here in the bay area. new clues today in the shooting that wounded nine in san francisco. the connection investigators made in the case. and, a pride first in the bay area. abc 7 news starts right now. >> building a better bay area, moving forward and finding solutions, this is abc 7 news. >> the nation and eluded the fbi for decades. convicted unabomber ted kaczynski died today while serving a life sentence. his targets included two men here in the bay area. thank you for joining us. i am j.r. stone. the convicted terrorist known as the unabomber died today in federal prison. he was 81, three were killed and dozens of others were injured in his bombings. abc 7 news reporter cornell barnard is in the newsroom and spoke earlier with the son of a bay area victim. cornell: jonathan lives in the

north bay and says the unabomber's reign of terror impacted his family directly after his father was targeted almost 30 years ago. >> my first reaction was that finally we can close the chapter on this part of our life. cornell: jonathan epstein says the man known as the unabomber's death means closer for his family. >> i was for his family. cornell: his father was a target of the unabomber in 1993 >> i was driving across the golden gate bridge when i was called by my aunt who said my father had been hit by a bomb. >>'s father was severely injured and lost fingers in the blast. he said his father were's -- father's focus was on understanding down syndrome. >> my father was not not involved in genetic engineering or some of the things people feared about it. cornell: he pleaded guilty after

for him the legacy of the unabomber is over. >> he was clearly a disturbed man. he was a bright guy who went the wrong way mentally, and my hope is that this is the last interview on the subject of ted kaczynski. cornell: jonathan said his father returned to the work after a long recovery and passed away in 2011. he said his father did not want to be defined as unabomber victim but instead by his contribution to science. j.r.: you being one of the first stories you covered. what do you remember about the case as it unfolded? cornell: a couple of things. the intense security surrounding the federal courthouse in sacramento but my most vivid memory would be the unabomber's cabin, which, leave it or not, they trucked in from montana to lecturers have a look. it was a

electricity or water. it is hard to believe that was where the bombs were made. j.r.: developing news on last night's shooting in san francisco in the mission district where nine were hurt and all of the victims are expected to be ok. it happened during a block party before 9:00 a.m. at 24th street phil scott says there is now a visible police presence in the area. they believe it was a targeted incident and say there is no threat to the public. this afternoon. >> seeing in san francisco when we look at the data and we have seen numbers decline considerably, this is heartbreaking

community but the city as a whole. j.r.: police reportedly reviewed surveillance video and identified a possible suspect. no arrests have been made. shortly after the incident, abc 7 news spoke to santiago lerma, an aid to san francisco supervisor hillary ronen. he lives close by, and he heard the gunshots. >> this is quite an outlier. this is generally very i am obviously very shook up and we are concerned for the victims, but this is an extreme case, and we hope we do not see this anymore. j.r.: he also says there was a police response of the original incident during carnaval, which led investigators to connect the two cases. in the east bay, organizations have continued efforts to get more guns off the streets. the police department joint community groups for a gun

year, the bodies of approximately 140 people who died in sonoma county go unclaimed at the local hospitals, funeral homes and the corners office. two closures are impacting the drive in the bay area, and southbound lanes of six adr work . they are paving. the shutdown started last night and lanes are scheduled to reopen monday at 4:00 a.m. details are in place. the closure only impacts southbound lanes. people came together today to celebrate inclusivity and community. all during the first-ever pride parade in one bay area city. we check out the highlights. ♪ another parade first today, th one in san francisco. it kicks off a month of celebrations of african-american culture. >> cloudy skies over the bay

illegally spiking its place through deceptive deals. the bay area news group reports a lawsuit has been filed against the grocery store and its parent company albertsons. the lawsuit claims the california stores raised the price on food sold in buy one get one and buy one get two free promotions. safeway agreed to pay more than $100 million to settle a class-action lawsuit in oregon that made similar claims about what is called bogo promotions for certain meat the number of deaths and serious injuries associated with tesla's autopilot technology is up significantly, according to analysis of federal data by the washington post. the post reports 736 crashes involving tesla autopilot in the u.s. since 2019, 17 were fatal. the national highway traffic safety and administration said it is unclear whether the technology is the casa beach
