an aide to a san francisco supervisor says it may be tied to a fight that broke out over the weekend. >> there was extra police on scene saturday evening saturday night's -- following friday night's shooting. >> we can confirm there were nine victims that were struck by gunfire, and they are all expected to survive. >> residents say a block party brought out big crowds here at the intersection of tree and 24th. then around 9:00 p.m., there were reports of gunshots. >> we just heard several gunshots, and then we saw a lot of police cars go down the street. probably about 25. >> he has lived in the mission district for about 25 years. he says he is relieved no one was killed. he says there is a sense of uncertainty as he walked around

on saturday but insists the neighborhood is peaceful. >> we have been really peaceful and we have not had anything like that happen in a long time, so it was just interesting to hear something like that. >> san francisco police identified the nine victims, ranging in age from 23 to 35 years old, mostly men. the mayor says there needs to be accountability. >> i think what we see in san francisco when we look at our data, a lot of the violent crime, we have seen numbers declined considerably. this is definitely heartbreaking and challenging, not just for the mission community, but for our city as a whole. >> andy lambert came out to watch music performances. >> unique to a certain pocket of the country. it is everywhere. >> so far, there have been no arrests, and there's no information regarding any suspect or suspects.

jr: in the east bay, organizations in oakland continue efforts to get more guns off the streets. the police department conjoint community groups for a gun buyback event today. guns to gardens offered $300 gift cards for each gun that was turned in as well as tickets to upcoming oakland a's games. the oakland mayor made an appearance at today's event. 42 guns were collected today. they will be melted down and refurbished into gardening tools. he planted bombs, terrorized the nation, and eluded the fbi for decades. ted kaczynski, also known as the unabomber, died today in federal prison while serving a life sentence. among his targets, two men in the bay area. cornell barnard spoke to the son of one of the victims. >> my first reaction was that finally we can close the chapter on this part of our life. cornell: jonathan epstein says the man known as the unabomber

-- the death of the man known as the unabomber brings closure. his father, dr. charles epstein, was a target of the unabomber in 1993 when a package was delivered to the family's home. >> i was driving across the golden gate bridge when i was called by my aunt, i believe, who said my father had opened a mail bomb. >> dr. epstein was severely injured and lost fingers in the blast. jonathan says there was no reason for the attack because his father's research was focused on understanding down syndrome. >> the irony of his being targeted is that my father was not involved in genetic engineering or some of the things people feared about at the time. cornell: kaczynski pleaded guilty and was sentenced to eight life sentences. kaczynski, who lived as a recluse in a sparse cabin in montana, explained his motivation for the killings as being rooted in hatred of the modern world and technology.

he sent a 35,000-word essay to the fbi explaining his motives, which became known as the unabomber manifesto. >> they called him the unabomber, the fbi did, because initially, some of his targets were universities. cornell: laura anthony covered the unabomber's file. she recalls kaczynski's demeanor in court was far from the images of the alleged terrorist many remember after his capture. >> unlike a lot of defendants i had seen in court, he would look at the gallery. he would look at us sitting there and smile, almost like we were going to have coffee that day. cornell: jonathan says for him, the legacy of the unabomber is over. >> kaczynski was clearly a very disturbed man. a very bright guy who -- who went the wrong way mentally and it speaks of the danger of untreated mental illness. my hope is this is the last

interview i do on the subject of ted kaczynski. cornell: jonathan says his father returned to his work after a long recovery. he passed away in 2011. he said his father did not want to be defined as a unabomber victim but instead by his contribution to science. jr thanks, cornell. happening now, two closures are impacting the drive in parts of the bay area. the first in pleasanton. southbound lanes of 68 are close for road work. crews are replacing pavement. the shutdown started last night, and lanes are scheduled to reopen monday at 4:00 a.m. a traffic shift in the north bay on highway 101 southbound in marin county. san antonio road on and off ramps will be closed from 8:00 tonight to 4:00 a.m. tomorrow as part of the final phase of a decade-long widening project. also starting today, southbound traffic is being diverted onto

sadly, these tags were stolen from a car thursday. >> i immediately noticed that the dog tags were gone, and my heart just, like, sank. i could not even put two words what i felt. jr: katie would have been ambrose's great-niece. at 26, she never knew him. she has read articles written about him over the years. she knew he was a gunner in the army killed in a japanese attack in june of 1942 and is now desperately trying to locate the identification tags, something that hung from her rearview mirror. >> i like to look at them. it is a reminder of my family and to work hard and you do the things that he was not able to do. jr: private rebellion was posthumously given purple heart for his actions in world war ii. katie says her uncle still has that metal, but the family does not have much else other than

survival. rescuers scoured the amazon rain forest are more than a month, searching for for children after they were on a plane that crashed when it was traveling. rena: 40 days after their plane crashed in the amazon rainforest, for young children have been rescued. a colombian military official told reporters they are now here in bogota, relieving the most -- receiving the most specialized care. they are going to be taken care of in our great military hospital. the search of the rain forest spanning more than a three-mile radius. rescuers never giving up. the colombian army and local indigenous people all taking part in the intense rescue mission, at times dropping food packages and flyers into the jungle, hoping to aid survival and using recordings of their grandmother's voice telling the kids to stay put. the children, aged 13, 9, four, and the youngest, just a year,
