what they did last night in the legislature would say, no, we don't want to take that $2 billion reduction because transit, especially in san francisco and los angeles and specifically san francisco, bart is in trouble. and has been since the start of the pandemic last year there was a surplus of
9:37 pm
money when the budget proposal was voted on. this year, there's a deficit and lawmakers have had to figure out what to cut. the latest budget proposal had eyed transportation. people have been calling that shortsighted, especially organizations that are working on climate change and having california meet our carbon neutral goals. ridership on public transportation systems like bart are struggling to return to pre-pandemic numbers. but many have said that there's a need to continue investing, especially if the state aims to meet ambitious climate goals in the coming years. a lot of people were very upset that the loss of any kind of public transit funding is going to inhibit that goal or make it very, very difficult for us in the long term. the new deal also provides $1.1 billion of funding over three years, money that state senator scott weiner has been pushing for. it doesn't solve the problem completely. we have more work to do. but this is a big positive start. still, the budget is not finalized, and
9:38 pm
by law, california has to have a balanced budget. though the senate and assembly are expected to pass it, it still has to meet governor newsom's approval and soon. in june 15th is a deadline, and lawmakers are probably very, very motivated, as you can imagine, because the law requires them to come up with a budget or they don't get paid in the south bay. zach fuentes, abc seven news, there's a new option to get to the sonoma county airport. smart train launched a micro transit shuttle today that connects the smart airport station to the actual airport that's a mile away. passengers can book the shuttle bus on demand, either in advance or on the spot every day of the week between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m, the shuttle costs $1.50 to ride. oakland fire officials are investigating a fire at a church yesterday morning. the fire happened at 37th street baptist church in west oakland. abc7 news spoke with a pastor of the church. he says it's going to cost about $30,000 to repair the building and pastor w.s. mcclinton believes the congregation simply can't afford

those expenses. he says the church has been around for more than 75 years and it just underwent some remodeling and now this a vital marine research facility is in danger of closing for good. the estuary and ocean science center, operated by san francisco state, is the only one of its kind on the bay. and with funding for the program in jeopardy. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard found students and staff getting creative about how to save it. it's a place where water from the bay is piped in on demand for research and tanks of eelgrass are studied to help buffer sea level rise. we take it out and we plant it in the bay. and we did about three acres of frustration last last week. welcome to a mile long stretch of marin bayfront known as the estuary and ocean science center in tiburon, a 53 acre campus run by san francisco state. for the past 45 years. it's where researchers and students have studied the

9:41 pm
part of the fundraising effort could be used to renovate these world war two era navy barracks into affordable housing. they could be leased to graduate students and teachers and firstrillionesponders who can't necessarily afford to live in marin. i'm very confident in our ability to find secure funding sources. many are optimistic money can be raised. the alternative would mean lost research and some students not pursuing careers in ocean science. not having this facility means a lack of that training and lack of that support for our state and federal agencies. boyer and her colleagues are working on a financial proposal which they plan to show university officials this month a final decision. it's expected this summer in tiburon, cornell bernard, abc seven news. still to come, a look at who's spending money and who's saving money. the differences are split by generations. i'm meteorologist sandy patel. cooler than average today, but not for long. we're going to talk about a warmer forecast coming up when abc7 news at 930
