you think vegas needed any other reason to celebrate? they are always ready for a good party. what a night it was for the golden knights. fans celebrating their stanley cup win well into the night. pretty sure they're still going this morning. >> i love the story. it's an entrepreneurial story. they built that team out of nothing. here they are. we also have some good news and bad news for your money. inflation is at its lowest level in two years, but there's still real pain at the supermarket. groceries have been getting more expensive and they continue to climb. we'll also get to that key decision today from the federal reserve that's going to affect your credit cards, car loans and mortgages. >> it is a big decision. we're going to start with donald trump. he pleaded not guilty to charges that he hid documents from authorities. last night he rallied his supporters and prepared to campaign for president while facing criminal trials in at least two courtrooms. rachel scott reports from new jersey. good morning, rachel.

>> reporter: good morning, george. the former president quickly tried to turn the page, going in front of the cameras to rally his supporters. inside the courtroom, he never uttered a single word. his arms were crossed. his face was stern. he appeared to understand the gravity of the moment as the first former president to face federal criminal charges. overnight former president donald trump rallying his supporters at his golf club. just hours after pleading not guilty to 37 counts, related to his alleged mishandling of classified documents. >> they will fail and we will win bigger and better than ever before. >> reporter: in front of the cameras, trump was upbeat and defiant declaring his innocence and threatening to go after president biden if elected. >> i will never be moving. >> reporter: but behind closed doors, a much different tone. >> we love you. >> reporter: hours earlier in florida, trump's motorcade departing his resort, the former president riding alone on the way to the courthouse, a group

of supporters and opponents gathering outside, largely peaceful, far fewer than the tens of thousands police had prepared for. >> we love trump! >> reporter: inside trump was arrested. his fingerprints taken electronically, but no mug shot and no handcuffs. when he entered the courtroom he was just feet from jack smith. with slumped shoulders and crossed arms, trump didn't utter a single word. his lawyer entering his plea, not guilty. prosecutors say trump illegally kept classified documents with some of the government's most sensitive secrets at his mar-a-lago club, storing them in a ballroom, storage room, even a bathroom. as the federal government pushed to get them back, prosecutors say trump repeatedly tried to obstruct their investigation, allegedly suggesting his attorney hide or destroy the documents. also at the defense table r trump's aide walt nada, who allegedly conspired with his

boss to obstruct the investigation. accused of moving dozens of boxes to hide them from trump's attorney. the judge ordering the two to not discuss the facts of the case. they left the courtroom together making one last stop at a cuban restaurant in little havana. >> are you ready? food for everyone. food for everyone. >> reporter: nada there right by trump's side. i was part of a small group of reporters allowed inside that courtroom. we noticed special counsel jack smith repeatedly glanced over at the former president. trump never did turn around once to look back at him. at times the former president did appear restless. it was clear he was ready to get this overwith and get back to his 2024 campaign where his legal defense is now a central part of his message, george. >> sure. okay, rachel, thank you very much. let's bring in dan abrams. let's start out with the presidential records act. the president claims he is allowed to keep these documents, but the records act is pretty

clear. it says they belong to the government, not the former president. >> correct. this is definitely a mischaracterization of what it is. there have been disputes between presidents and the national archives over what should be considered a presidential record. but none of that relates to documents created by agencies, what are called agency records. the fbi documents, the cia documents, the documents. those have never been suggested -- >> they're not personal. >> no one suggested those are presidential records. if you take his argument to the extreme, basically saying i can take home any document ever that belongs to the government that i saw or had access to. any of it. i should be able to take it all home. and of course that's not the case. >> he also made a claim saying he didn't have time to go through the documents. >> it's the first time we have heard the former president address the question of, all right, so what happened here? this is the first time we've heard him say i actually didn't have time to go through the

boxes. the question has been how did this happen? did someone pack the boxes for you? did you go through them? of course prosecutors are alleging he knew exactly what was in the boxes. he was giving specific orders with regard to it. >> moved from the storage room to his office. from the storage room to other locations. they're going to have rebuttals to that argument. >> including some video evidence. >> dan abrams, thank you very much. >> thank you, george. all eyes on the federal reserve set to announce this afternoon whether they'll raise interest rates yet again or pause. elizabeth schulze is in new york this morning. good morning, elizabeth. >> reporter: good morning, michael. this is a critical phraoegt for the federal reserve. for the first time in 15 months, the federal reserve is expected to pause its aggressive interest rate hikes. since march of 2022, the fed raised rates ten times in a row. making it a lot more expensive

to borrow money. mortgage rates have nearly doubled during that time. average credit card balances, interest rates have spiked to a new record. the fed's goal here is to slow down spending in order to lower the prices that we pay. there are signs it's working. as inflation cools from that red hot pace we saw last year. now the fed expected to take a breather, michael. >> what does the new inflation report mean for the fed and for american families? >> reporter: right. so that consumer price index report shows that prices were up 4% in may compared to a year ago. that is a lot better than that 9% rate we saw last june. prices are still going up for so many daily essentials. american house holds are paying an extra $260 every month for the same goods and services compared to this time last year. look at the price for a gallon of milk. it's now about $4. that's an improvement from $4.20 last summer, but it is still a lot more than $3.50 two years ago. so the bottom line here is that prices aren't going up as much as they were, but they are still historically high. michael?

>> still taxing on the american family. thank you very much, elizabeth. rebecca? >> all right, michael. thank you. we turn now to the i 95 collapse. officials are set to unveil plans to repair the highway in philadelphia as new video shows the moment a truck burst into flames under that bridge. janai norman is there with the very latest. good morning, janai. >> reporter: rebecca, good morning to you. crews have been working around the clock to demolish what's left of that fire damaged i-95 overpass. we're getting a look at new video that shows the moment the fire began. that tanker truck hauling gasoline crashing and exploding into a fireball early sunday morning. locals tell us it was a tight hair pin curve that you need to slow down to make, that didn't happen. we've been telling you about the local and more widespread impact on traffic. the economic impact could be felt much farther from the collapse site. transportation secretary pete buttigieg was here looking at the destruction tuesday. he says that consumers well

beyond the philadelphia area could see price increases because it will cost more for trucks to detour around the collapse site. he vowed to rebuild fast, saying the only thing more important in making sure that it is rebuild quickly is making sure it's restored safely. it is anticipated that it could take months to replace this overpass. state officials plan to announce their plans to rebuild and reconstruct this critical infrastructure later this morning. michael? >> thank you very much, janai. we're going to turn to severe weather across most of the south. with extreme hail and risk of tornados. ginger's been tracking all of it for us. >> we're track it now because there are severe thunderstorm watches if you're traveling 20, 40, arkansas, mississippi. you could have damage winds. throw a tree into a car, have a giant hail stone crack a windshield or dent your car. we had those yesterday in texas. up to 5.5 inches in diameter. that's bigger than a grape fruit. really dangerous. we'll see more of this today. add even more elevated tornado threat.

george, montgomery, alabama, columbus, georgia all in that hot spot. second highest level of severe storms. >> you can see it there. ginger, thank you very much. now to the mississippi police officer shot and wounded an 11-year-old boy in his own home. the officer has been suspended without pay. we are hearing from him for the first time. demarco morgan has the story. >> reporter: this morning the mississippi officer who shot and injured aderrien murray is speaking out through his attorney. police sergeant greg capers now suspended without pay, pending the outcome of the state's investigation. >> certainly he wishes none of this happened. none of it happened maliciously. none of it happened intentionally. and none of it happened recklessly. it was a pure accident. >> reporter: last month when i sat down with aderrien, he woke up to an argument between his mom and boyfriend. he was told to call police.

when police arrived they ordered everyone in the home to come out with their hands up. >> i came out doing this. >> reporter: then describing the moment that he was shot. >> it felt like a taser, like a big punch to the chest. >> reporter: his mother rushing to his side. >> i said, you're not gonna die, baby. you're not gonna die. just keep talking. >> reporter: the young boy was hospitalized for five days for a collapsed lung, a cut on his liver and fractured ribs. murray's attorney, carlos moore, responding to officer caper's suspension in a statement this morning saying, it was always my belief that it was reckless and the statute clearly states if it's intentional or reckless, it's aggravated assault. the mississippi bureau of investigation is investigating the case and will hand over the results to the mississippi state's attorney general. the boy's family is currently suing both the officer and the police department. the officer saying through his attorney that he is sorry for what happened but is ready to clear his name. >> okay, demarco. thank you.

we turn to san francisco. a major mall downtown pulling out of the city siting sharply declining sales, fewer shoppers and more. it is the latest in a series of companies pulling out of san francisco and another blow to one of the largest urban economies in the country. our chief national correspondent matt gutman is there with more. good morning, matt. >> reporter: good morning, rebecca. there's concern that san francisco could turn into a so called zombie city with its downtown hollowed out by a fentanyl epidemic, homelessness and fleeing retailers. you just mentioned last significant hit, the biggest mall in the city, right in downtown is leaving. this morning a san francisco mall at the epi center in a growing dead zone in an american city. battling homelessness, soaring home prices, the city dealt its latest blow this week. westfield which owns the city's largest mall, stopped paying its $500,000 mortgage and is

surrendering the property to lenders. the company citing decreased occupancy down to 55% including closures of tenants such as nordstrom, banana republic and others. also giving up on downtown, hundreds of other companies including gap and whole foods. union square used to be the beating heart of san francisco but a recent survey found that since 2019, nearly 50% of all the stores here have left. now it's empty storefront after empty storefront after empty storefront. >> last time i was here was 2019. so it was great back then. now i'm scared. i was thinking to switch my hotel. >> reporter: in the first quarter of the year the city saw a 16% rise in robberies and a 41% spike in fentanyl deaths over the same period in 2022. >> you're seeing it all over right now. companies are leaving the city. is san francisco dangerous? >> well, here's the thing. san francisco is a major city

and it has challenges. but let's back up a little bit. you are talking about people who are leaving the city, but not the people who are staying, expanding, coming to san francisco. >> reporter: it's not just san francisco. other west coast cities including portland, seattle and los angeles also suffering from a similar trend from downtown decay. the mayor noting that several metrics are flagged, but it is worth mentioning we are not at union square or the westfield mall this morning because we have been advised that it's simply too dangerous to be there at this hour. michael? >> that's saying a lot there, matt. thank you very much for that. we're going to turn now to vegas, where it has turned up for the golden knights. stanley cup champions after just their sixth season overpowering the florida panthers in five games. good morning, mola.

lori pinkham tells us after years of trauma she is finding her voice and ready to face nilo after arrested and charged in the violent spree of sexual assaults that haunted boston for 15 years. lori and her mom are seeking justice and closure. >> i kept thinking is this a nightmare? i'm gonna wake up. >> reporter: the first accuser of boston's serial sexual assault suspect matthew nilo speaking out. lori pinkham sitting down exclusively with abc news with her mom janine by her side, now ready to tell her story of the night she said she was attacked 15 years ago. what do you remember from that night in 2007? >> well, i was, had been out at one of the clubs that i was doing promotions for. i was walking to my car. he pulled up in his car next to me and kind of cut me off and started yelling to me like something like, hey, oh, hey, i saw you.

do you know a ride? i was like, no, i'm okay. and that's when i saw he had a gun in his hand and he just said get in the car. i just got really scared. i just got in the car. >> reporter: did you fear for your life? >> yeah. i started getting scared. he kept driving. as soon as we got to charlestown and he stopped the car i tried to run as fast as i could. he caught up to me and that's when he raped me. >> reporter: what did that night take away from you? >> it took away my freedom, honestly. >> reporter: for more than a decade lori said she lived in a constant state of terror. what was it like for 15 years not knowing who did this to you? >> it's been horrible. a big part of my life stopped that day.

i couldn't work. i didn't want to spend time with anybody. every day i have lived in fear. >> it's heartbreaking. i feel like there's a part of her that didn't get to continue her life. you know? so she didn't finish growing up to become a woman with a career and a family. i know that breaks her heart. >> reporter: but just weeks ago, authorities informed lori they had zeroed in on a suspect later identified as manhattan attorney matthew nilo. >> i was shocked. i couldn't believe it. >> reporter: prosecutors say dna testing linked nilo to lori's unsolved sexual assault case and to three others. when you looked at a picture of the suspect, what did you notice? >> his eyes.

his eyes mostly. i just remember them because they were like black. >> reporter: are you confident that this is the guy? >> yes. absolutely. >> reporter: authorities say they checked dna from the victims' rape kits eventually leading them to nilo, who has pleaded not guilty to seven counts. lori, vowing to face him in court. >> i want him to know that i'm not scared of him at all. >> reporter: why do you feel like now is the moment to come forward? >> i have my chance to look him in the eye and tell him he's not going to get away with it. >> the judge granted nilo the option of paying $500,000 cash bail. so far county officials tell us he remains incarcerated but his lawyer says he expects he'll be released soon. lori tells me she will testify against nilo if asked by prosecutors. her mom says that speaking out to us has been a first step in lori's journey to healing. george?

borrowing money. since march of 2022, the fed has raised rates ten times in a row. during that time, mortgage rates have nearly doubled, average credit card rates spiked to a new record. well, today the fed is expected to take a pause and not increase those borrowing costs again. the reason for that is that the fed moves appear to be working to bring down inflation. the consumer price index increased 4% in may from a year ago. that is a lot better than that 9% peak last june. but prices are still high for so many daily essentials including groceries. the average price for a gallon of milk for example now at $4. that's an improvement from $4.20 last summer but still a lot more than $3.50 two years ago. the bottom line is prices aren't going up as much as they are, but they are still high. even if the fed does take a pause today, it could still be awhile before those mortgage or credit card rates start to come back down. michael? >> thank you very much, elizabeth. this morning we are celebrating

we are back with our gma cover story. our series scam u on the road. 70,000 americans lost $1.3 billion to romance scams last year. this morning gio benitez is in philadelphia. we've seen a rise in these scams all across pennsylvania. >> reporter: yeah, that's right, george. the attorney general here telling us this is a big problem all across the state. so this morning right here, you're going to meet a woman who was targeted online and then gave her entire life savings away to a scammer. kate from pennsylvania thought she had found love again. the widow of 12 years at the time meeting a man online named tony.

>> he would ask me at the end of the day, how was your day, honey? it had been a long time since anyone had asked me that. >> reporter: she said they talked every day, often several times day for three months. but then he started asking for money for his daughter. >> she was sick and could i possibly help him out. >> reporter: over a few months kate said she sent tony her life savings of $39,000. but she became suspicious when she received a phone call asking for even more later figuring out the whole relationship was a scam. she contacted the fbi and she says they are investigating her case. >> i think that people are using dating websites to meet people. they are particularly vulnerable because they're in a situation where they're really looking for somebody to be their companion. they want to trust. they want to believe. >> reporter: so how does it work? the pennsylvania attorney general's office says romance scams start when a person is approached on a dating app or social media.

there. hey, rebecca. >> hey, george. thank you. we're turning now to a gma health alert. the american medical association is expected to release a new statement today on the way doctors use body mass index, or bmi, in obesity medicine. we first reported on this and medical contributor dr. sutton is here to break it down for us. nice to see you, dr. sutton. the thing that fascinates me about bmi. it's been controversial for a handful of years now. it wasn't created by a doctor. this is something that was come up with by a mathemetician. >> many don't realize this. it was created in the 1800s as a way to study populations. majority of the time they were populations that were white. bmi or body mass index, which i think it was adopted because of its eased of calculation. doesn't account for body composition, muscle mass as well as other factors of health. that includes cholesterol, blood pressure. it obviously doesn't account for racial differences and genetics that exist in our diverse populations today.

>> so it's leaving out a lot of critical features of a person's health in addition to the fact that a mathematician thought of this. we don't know what the ama will say ultimately. what do we expect for all of this to mean for patients? >> i think we expect this policy change to echo what specialists have been shouting from the roof tops for as long as i can remember. bmi should not be used as a stand alone measure to understand health. there are many other factors in life that equate to health. unfortunately, body mass index has been utilized as an easy standard to say, oh, weigh is the cause of chronic disease. that is where it's important to understand weight, although associated to chronic disease, should not be deemed as cause and effect. as you can imagine, that leads to many having their weight being blamed for their chronic disease. that leads to poor quality care and specifically for black women who typically have higher levels of bmi compared to the average population. even those prior studies have shown black women with higher levels of bmi can have overall better metabolic health.
