severe storms on the move across the south overnight. millions are also bracing for record heat today while another part of the country sees the worst air quality in decades as overnight , more power outages from severe weather across the south. more than 150,000 customers affected . from georgia to texas, the national weather service confirms a tornado caused this damage near savannah, georgia. video from accuweather showing a tornado in newton, georgia. new video shows lightning striking a traffic camera in the area where part of i-95 was shut down due to fallen power lines. in neighboring alabama, a tornado tore through the city of eufaula , damaging several homes and businesses. my lord in mississippi, monster hail this chunk of ice measuring nine inches in circumference. a possible tornado east of dallas shredded a two story building and damaged cars. dangerous weather also hitting the northeast. a new jersey parks

employee was hit by lightning while painting lines on this soccer field. it was really like a bomb. it was like huge bomb. the worker expected to survive after first responders revived him. he didn't have a pulse and began cpr. once we were in the ambulance and he did get a pulse back, he did slowly begin to gain consciousness north of the border. this massive tornado was caught on camera in alberta, canada. one local weather expert says he's never seen so many tornadoes in one day in that province. meanwhile, more smoke from wildfires burning in canada is drifting into the us. minneapolis seeing its worst air quality. yesterday since 1980. today, some of that smoke moves over chicago and indianapolis. record heat is also expected today from texas to louisiana and florida. we'll get a check of your forecast in just a few minutes. breaking overnight, west coast dockworkers and port operators have reached a tentative labor deal after more

than a year of negotiate actions. the new contract proposal covers 22,000 workers at dozens of ports from california all the way to washington. and no details have been released. but the acting labor secretary says it delivers stability for workers and the supply chain. now to the case against former president trump and word overnight that trump rejected efforts to reach a settlement with the justice department before last week's historic indictment. abc's justin finch is here with those details. justin, good morning. andrew good morning. and long before last week's indictment in the classified records case, the washington post reports former president trump rejected the idea of arranging a settlement with the justice department. the post says trump attorney christopher kise wanted to quietly approach the justice department last fall to broker a deal that would avoid charges. the deal would have included returning all the documents. trump was reportedly not interested. in the meantime, sources say trump is narrowing down a list of potential new

lawyers for the case. but with no court date set yet, they've been able to take their time. the indictment does not seem to be hurting trump politically, though a new poll shows trump enjoys 53% support among republican and republican leaning voters, compared to 56% last month. and the trump campaign says it's now raised $7 million since last week's indictment. lionel, justin, thank you. nine more women are suing bill cosby, accusing him of sexual assault between the late 70s and early 90s as the lawsuit filed in nevada claims cosby used his power and fame to victimize them. the women claim they were drugged and assaulted at homes, hotels and dressing rooms. they're among the more than 60 women to accuse cosby of rape, assault or sexual harassment. a spokesperson for bill cosby claims the women are addicted to media attention and greed. a major development in the case of the former marine arrested for the death of a man on the new york subway. he's now one step closer to a possible

trial. this morning, sources say a manhattan grand jury has indicted the marine veteran accused of placing a homeless man in a deadly chokehold on the subway. the exact charges will not be revealed until daniel penny appears in court, but he was initially arrested on a second degree manslaughter charge, which would carry a sentence of up to 15 years in prison if he's convicted. penny released a video sunday describing his encounter with jordan neely, saying neely was threatening passengers on that train. the three main threats that he repeated over and over was, i'm going to kill you. i'm prepared to go to jail for life and i'm willing to die. penny says he restrained neely to protect himself and others, but did not intend to kill him. i use this hole to restrain him, and i did this by leaving my hand on top of his head to control his body. you could see in the video there was a clear rise and fall of his chest, indicating that he was still breathing. but prosecutors claim when penny released his arm from neely's neck, neely appeared unconscious. his death was later ruled a homicide by compression of the neck. nearly $3 million

have now been raised for penny's legal defense. last night, neely's family released a statement saying daniel penny's indictment is the right result for the wrong he committed, adding penny did not have the right to be the judge, jury and executioner. penny is currently free on bond. he has not entered a plea just yet. we learned overnight about a new crackdown on fentanyl in hard-hit san francisco. our affiliate kgo reports. s the california highway patrol seized 4.2 kilos of the drug in one san francisco neighborhood in just the last six weeks. that is enough fentanyl to kill more than 2 million people. meanwhile, authorities say they busted an international drug syndicate that was smuggling methamphetamine in maple sirup. four shipments weighing more than six tons were seized on their way from canada to australia. and new zealand. women need not apply. that's the message from the southern baptist convention. after a major church in california made a push for women pastors. the decision could now have far reaching consequences. here's abc's andrea fujii this morning

. no female pastors allowed and that's the ruling from the southern baptist convention. it's a matter of biblical commitment. a committee to the scripture that unequivocally we believe limits the office of pastor to men. the decision coming after five churches were recently expelled from the convention for ordaining women. two appealed. the decision include saddleback church in california, one of the state's largest. it's founder author rick warren argued the church's case. i'm not asking you to agree with my church. i am asking you to act like a southern baptist to no avail. saddleback church is not in friendly cooperation with the southern baptist convention. the convention going a step further, proposing an expansion of restrictions on women serving as leaders. the vote yesterday puts an estimated 9900 southern baptist churches with female pastors in jeopardy of also being expelled. ousted churches , including saddleback, will not be able to associate with the

but nearby residents lost power. a new move to improve security in the cockpit of commercial planes. the faa is requiring all new passenger planes to include a second airy barrier to the cockpit. it says the extra barrier will protect against intrusion when the door is open . airlines have until the middle of 2025 to comply. existing planes are not affected. an urgent message this morning to parents from a michigan couple who lost their son after a sextortion plot. it's a scam targeting more teens by getting them to share explicit photos online. in a michigan couple is sounding the alarm after they say a social media scam led to the death of their 17 year old son. this isn't just a one off person sitting around trying to get a few hundred bucks from somebody. these are very well oiled. they know how to profile the right types of people. they tell good morning america. their son, jordan demay, was the victim of a so-called sextortion scam, which tricks people into sending photos of themselves

online, then blackmails them to avoid being exposed. investigators say jordan was scammed last year into sending an explicit image of himself to someone he thought was a girl on instagram. but they say he was actually speaking to samuel ogoshi, a man from nigeria pretending to be a young woman. prosecutors say ogoshi demanded $1,000 for the return of the image when jordan sent only $300. they say ogoshi threatened to expose the photo to jordan's family and friends. hours later, his family says jordan took his own life. we are secure family and three people from nigeria across the world came into my house that night while i was sleeping and murdered. jordan and had zero chance to stop it. instagram did not return our request for comment. the fbi says there were roughly 7000 reports of sextortion online last year, resulting in more than a dozen suicides. in this

approved a plan to give the team $380 million in public funding for a ballpark on the vegas strip, clearing a major hurdle. now to a gruesome story involving an alleged criminal scheme at harvard medical school. at the morgue, we warn you some of the details are graphic. is it real. you know, i mean, yes, he was already passed away. but still, this morning, the daughters of a new hampshire sheriff's deputy who passed away in 2019 say they're horrified to learn their father's body was part of a grotesque criminal scheme at harvard university, fbi agents yesterday arrested this man, cedric lodge, for allegedly stealing and selling dissected human body parts while he was manager of the morgue at harvard medical school. investigators say in a scheme dating back to 2018, lodge stole heads, brains, skin and bones from cadavers donated to the school for educational purposes . he then allegedly brought those parts to his home and with his wife's help, sold them for tens of thousands of dollars.

who could do something like that ? you know, what kind of person ? no respect at all for the family. they need to pay. do you have anything to say to the families? no buyers identified in the indictment include katrina mclean, owner of cats creepy creations, a massachusetts store that advertises creations that shock the mind and shake the soul. officials say she and others were allowed to enter the morgue and choose what they wanted to buy. some items selling for hundreds of dollars each. in one case, skin that was sold was allegedly made into leather and a paypal account from one client allegedly included a transaction labeled head number seven. the deans at harvard medical school calling the allegations an abhorrent betrayal. but for the families involved, their trust has been lost. the family of that new hampshire sheriff's deputy say his wife died earlier this year. her body was also donated to harvard. her daughters now want her body returned. she's down there, down there. and we want her back. the morgue manager and the alleged buyers face charges, including conspiracy and interstate transport of stolen goods as
