plus the hero is back. last night indiana jones and the dial of destiny all with big surprises. and the moment harrison ford was surprised on the red carpet. >> announcer: live in times square, this is good morning america. >> good morning america. hope you're doing well. we're following a lot of stories including antony blinken visiting china as tensions are at an all time high. we're going to have more on that ahead. also this morning, george, that big federal reserve decision to pause those interest rate hikes for the first time in more than a year. we are breaking down with what it means from your wallet. we begin with storms that swept across the south bringing tornado, hail and extreme wind. ginger is on the ground in alabama for us with the latest. good morning, ginger. >> michael, good morning. moments ago a tornado watch popped 70 miles to our southwest. that means the atmosphere is not done. this is where the business that

was destroyed, the wall coming down. this insulation as far as the eye can see. trees everywhere. thankfully, nobody injured in this town. this is rare for this time of year in this part of our country. it's not done with us yet. >> tornado! >> reporter: overnight, severe storms battering the south. at least ten reported tornados slicing across the landscape. >> here it comes! coming right on top of us! >> reporter: this accu weather video capturing a monster twister ripping through newton, georgia. the powerful winds, throwing debris. several warnings deemed particularly dangerous. >> just minutes here, guys. minutes to make life changing decisions. >> reporter: listen to this stunning boom of thunder. winds up to 80 miles per hour shredding trees, knocking out power to at least 230,000 customers. parts of arkansas saw hail as

big as softballs. churches of ice hitting this boat. remnants of what appears to be a home. we were right there chasing the same perpetual line of storms. we're just north. look at that. they are all the way back to mississippi. tornados also further south in abbeyville. in utah, alabama, this tree slamming into a home while two people were inside. thankfully, both survived. the cleanup now under way across several states. from this destroyed building in texas. >> it was like nothing i have ever seen before. >> reporter: to a wrecked home in mississippi. >> thank god he wasn't in that room back there. it's just demolished. >> reporter: more than 320 severe storm reports in just 24 hours. again, we're looking at the map and this tornado watch just popped up. it includes pensacola, destin. this is until 3:00 p.m. morning and early afternoon tornados in southern alabama and

the panhandle of florida. you notice green on the map. that's a flood watch. this line has barely moved. we've just been pummelled over and over. the lightning was so intense last night. it becomes more of a warm front when you go west. it's going to intensify across oklahoma today. lawton, oklahoma city, all included in that second highest level of risk for tornados. the garden city all the way down to dallas for that damaging wind threat and isolated tornado. again into tomorrow we're going to have more of it. that's because we've got this really unique system that's been blocked and the subtropical jet. this time of year we don't see that. lot of moisture. it traps, lifts then causes severe weather. that high in texas, that dangerous heat, that dome, it's going to continue as is the severe weather tomorrow. that's a look at friday. guys? >> ginger, thank you very much for keeping us up to late on all of this. we turn now to a new air quality alert for parts of the midwest as smoke from the canadian wild fires brings unhealthy air and

hazy skies into the u.s. alex perez is in chicago. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning, rebecca. millions of people in cities across the great lakes are waking up to find the sky filled with that canadian wild fire smoke. it's been especially bad in the minneapolis area. at its peak the air quality there yesterday was the worst on record since 1980, registering 243 on the air quality index. that falls under the very unhealthy level. now, this morning five states are currently under alerts for unhealthy air quality. this all comes one week after this incredible haze that blanketed new york city, west to detroit and down to washington, d.c. and beyond. some of those spots hitting 400 on the air quality index. we have not seen numbers that high or that bad this time around. but with those canadian wild fires still raging, many are bracing for more smoke down the

line. george? >> alex, thank you very much. we're going to washington now. secretary of state blinken heads to china tomorrow expected to meet with top officials as high tensions between china and the u.s. are causing issues. mary bruce has the story. good morning, mary. >> reporter: good morning, george. yeah, the administration is hoping that this trip will help ease those rising tensions. this relationship is complicated. this visit is now a critical test. >> good morning, everyone. >> reporter: this morning secretary of state blinken is preparing for a high stakes visit to china. the first u.s. cabinet official to visit beijing in four years. blinken departs friday and is expected to meet with top chinese officials, possibly even president xi. he had planned to visit earlier this year but those plans were scrapped when that chinese sky balloon crossed into the u.s. it's just one in a string of recent provocations by beijing. last month the chinese fighter jet flew aggressively close to a u.s. spy plane, sending the u.s. pilots bouncing in its wake.

and earlier this month, what u.s. officials called an unsafe maneuver by a chinese warship, crossing in front of the u.s. destroyer in the taiwan strait. despite all this, the secretary going ahead with his visit to beijing. so why now? a top state department official saying both sides, through many conversations in recent weeks, have come to the shared conclusion that now is the right time to engage at this level. but the chinese are making it clear they blame the u.s. for the current low in relations. blinken's agenda for the trip includes preventing chinese support for russia's war in ukraine, ensuring fair trade and halting china's u.s. technology and stopping the flow of fentanyl. is it the president's hope that these meetings pave the way for an in person way for the president and president xi? >> we view this as an important part of our diplomacy. they are going to be a major player for a long time. we want to continue to have those open line of conversations. >> reporter: now, president

biden and president xi haven't talked since they last met in november, a meeting that was supposed to reopen lines of communication and reset relations. those hopes, of course, were then thrown off track. if blinken's visit goes well, george, the two could meet face to face this coming november at a global summit in san francisco. george? we turn now to the federal reserve decision to pause interest rate hikes. elizabeth schulze is in washington with what it means and what comes next. good morning, elizabeth. >> reporter: good morning, george. this was the first time in 15 months that the federal reserve chose not to raise interest rates, but for consumers or businesses looking to take out a loan, the fed is signaling that you are not out of the woods quite yet. as part of its aggressive fight against inflation, the fed has increased borrowing costs ten times in a row since last march, bringing its key interest rate from 0 to 5%. that made it a lot more expensive to take out a home or car loan or to pay off your credit card debt. now the fed is taking a pause to assess how those higher rates are rippling through the economy. but this pause could be short lived.

the fed pencilled in two more rate increases this year. one could come as soon as next month. the bad news is if you're on the market for a new home, it will likely be awhile before mortgage rates come down. today's rates for a fixed $400,000 mortgage you're paying about $400 more than at this time last year. but the good news is that these higher interest rates benefit american saver. financial sad visors say consider saving your money into high yield accounts where you can get up to 5% back on your money in the bank. michael? >> thank you for that information. really appreciate it. we're going to turn to the i 95 collapse in philadelphia and the race to rebuild. officials are announcing plans for a temporary solution. they say it could be up and running in a matter of weeks. transportation correspondent gio benitez is on the scene in philadelphia with the latest. good morning, gio. >> reporter: hey, michael. good morning. yeah, that work is under way right now. you can see those cranes behind me moving pieces out.

they're going to be demolishing this today and then they hope to reopen it within weeks. now, the pennsylvania department of transportation will then build a temporary road on top of back fill, essentially patching the gap using recycled glass aggregate. they will build a permanent bridge later on. all of it will be shown on a live screen for the public. we all saw the videos of the accident on sunday. a truck bursting into flames causing that bridge to collapse, sadly killing the driver of that truck and shutting down a portion of that busy i-95 interstate. we still don't know what caused the crash. there are other highways to use here. it's going to take longer for truck drivers to transport goods. in fact, secretary of transportation pete buttigieg warned that may drive up shipping costs along the east coast. so the pressure is son to get this over. rebecca. >> you can really see the ripple effect there. gio benitez, thank you. we turn to the ex-marine accused of choking a man to death on the new york city subway. a grand jury has indicted daniel

penny. stephanie ramos joins us with the latest. good morning, stephanie. >> reporter: rebecca, good morning. the marine veteran daniel penny and that homeless man jordan neely were on the subway at this station stop when witnesses say neely began engaging in aggressive speech. penny said that's when he had to intervene. now he faces an indictment of manslaughter charges. this morning law enforcement sources tell abc news a manhattan grand jury has indicted daniel penny, a marine veteran accused of placing a homeless man, jordan neely, in a deadly choke hold on a subway. while penny initially faced manslaughter charges, the specifics of the indictment won't be unsealed until he appears in court at a later date. video from may 1st shows penny restraining neely with a choke hold on the subway floor until neely stopped moving. the chief medical examiner's office ruling the death a homicide.

neely had a documented history of mental illness. witnesses told police he had been threatening and harassing passengers. though penny was not specifically targeted. neely's family responding to the indictment through their attorney saying daniel penny's indictment is the right result for the wrong he committed. we will continue to fight on behalf of jordan as this process moves forward. penny's attorneys also releasing a statement saying they are confident that when a trial jury is tasked with weighing the evidence, they will find daniel penny's actions on that train were fully justified. this after penny's lawyers released a video earlier this week in which the 24-year-old disputes the extent to which he restrained neely. >> some people say i was holding on to mr. neely for 15 minutes. this is not true. between stops is only a couple of minutes. so the whole interaction was less than five minutes. >> reporter: attorneys for daniel penny insist that there's no way he could have foreseen

that his attempt to subdue a perceived threat could have turned deadly. michael? >> all right. thank you very much, stephanie. we're gonna turn to the two americans found dead at a luxury resort in mexico. the cause is under investigation. victor oquendo joins us with the latest. good morning, victor. >> reporter: good morning, michael. this happened in a small town in baja. that's about an hour north of cabo san lucas. two americans found dead in their luxury hotel room. the suspected cause, gas inhalation. paramedics received a report that two americans were unconscious in their room and when they arrived they found them deceased. 22-year-old abby lutz and john heathgo in the shower, both deceased. there have been several cases of deaths in mexico due to carbon monoxide poisoning or other gases. in october in mexico city, three u.s. citizens found dead at a rented apartment, also apparently victims of gas inhalation. in 2018 a gas leak in a water

heater caused the deaths of an american couple and their two children in the resort town of talum. an inspection later revealed that the water heater at the rented condominium was leaking gas. in this latest case, local authorities are in charge of the investigation. u.s. officials say they are aware but can't comment at this time. george? going to turn to the first major golf tournament since the pga announced plans to merge with liv golf. some lawmakers are asking tough questions about the deal. faith abubey has the story. good morning, faith. >> reporter: good morning, george. not just lawmakers asking serious questions about the shocking merger agreement. many of the players taking the green this morning are still unclear, they're still in the dark about what this means for them moving forward. this morning golfers teeing off at the exclusive los angeles country club. featuring 156 players from phil mickelson to part time uber

driver barry henson. >> the u.s. open is about every man getting a chance. if you play well enough, you are on the driving range right next to phil mickelson or right next to brooks koepka or rory or, in other years, tiger woods. >> reporter: it's the first major tournament since the truce in the golf war between the pga and the saudi backed liv golf. the two in a stunning announcement last week agreeing to bury the hatchet. >> this ultimately is a decision that i think is in the best interest of all of the members of the pga tour. >> reporter: but the new collectively owned for profit entity is not a done deal. the pga under doj investigation after it suspended players who defected to liv golf early on. >> it's hard for me to not sit up here and feel somewhat like a sacrificial lamb. >> reporter: saudi investors planning to compensate pga players like rory mcilroy and others who remain loyal to the pga.

others are in the dark. >> what's going to happen? i don't know. >> reporter: and the pga says that of course a lot of players will be on the green this morning, but the question this morning is what happens after the merger agreement? the pga says it's confident that once congress learns more about this new venture, it will understand more the benefits to the players and the golfing community as a whole. in the mean time, as the u.s. open kicks off on the green here this morning at the los angeles country club, many of the players are excited about this and, of course, jay monahan, the tour commissioner, is still missing in action. the tour said he is recuperating >> okay, faith. thank you very much. coming up the starbucks lawsuit. a former employee who said she was fired for being white awarded more than $25 million. and the high school football player who took his own life. his father says an instagram sextortion scheme is responsible. his warning to parents.

also we're seeing new images of pope francis for the first time since his abdominal surgery. the press office released photos of him visiting the children's cancer ward where he's been recovering. the pope will be released tomorrow morning. plus we are learning about a new economic phenomenon. called the beyonce effect. yes, that's right. a group of swedist economists are saying the start of the super star's renaissance world tour drove up the country's inflation numbers with her performances in stockholm sparking an increase in hotel stays and rates, even restaurant visits. if you're looking for a reason to study economic, this is it. good morning, eva. >> her lawyers say starbucks made her a white manager the scapegoat in the attempt to save face when it found itself in the midst of major backlash after two black men were arrested in a philadelphia store. the company firing her. a jury now finding in her favor. >> reporter: this morning a $25.6 million victory for a white former starbucks employee who accused the coffee giant of racial discrimination. a new jersey jury unanimously siding with the former regional manager shannon phillips, claiming her race was a determinative factor in starbucks decision to fire her in the wake of a 2018 racial fire storm. phillips wasn't present the day this viral video was recorded showing the arrest of two black men, dante robinson and rashawn nelson, who were waiting

for a business meeting when the employee called 911, accusing them of trespassing. >> i have two gentlemen who are refusing to make a purchase or leave. >> reporter: their arrest sparking protests nationwide. >> what do we want? justice! when do we want it? now! >> reporter: prompting starbucks to close stores for a day for racial bias training and reaching a confidential financial settlement with the two men. phillips said she was not involved in the arrest in any way. according to her civil complaint filed in 2018, she claims she actively worked on crisis management efforts, but less than a month after the arrest, phillips was notified of her termination. according to court documents starbucks claims phillips appeared overwhelmed, frozen and lacked awareness of how critical the situation was for starbucks and its partners and all actions taken by starbucks with respect to ms. phillips were for nondiscriminatory reasons. >> starbucks wasn't necessarily under legal pressure, but they were under public pressure to act and to show that they were

open to everyone of every race and origin and to show that they were not going to allow racism to foster within their organization. >> reporter: a black district manager testifying via zoom he thought phillips race played in starbucks decision to fire her, and that his race was a reason he was not terminated. >> other companies are definitely going to have to be much more thoughtful and clear about why they're exercising terminations when they're faced with this type of situation. >> we did reach out to starbucks. we were told they have no comment at this time. guys? >> thank you very much, eva. going to turn to the death of a high school football player. his family said he was driven to take his own life after falling victim to a social media scam. will reeve has that story. good morning, will. >> it's unfathomable. a teen driven to suicide by a pervasive scam. now the teen's parents are speaking out about their tragedy.

overnight the parents of a michigan teenager speaking out about a growing social media scam they said led to the death of their 17-year-old son. >> three people from across the world came into my house that night while i was sleeping and murdered jordan. i had zero chance to stop it. >> reporter: john demay and jennifer butta opening up about so called sextortion teens which trick teens into sending explicit photos of themselves online only to become blackmailed. their son jordan becoming a victim of the scheme, later taking his own life. >> jordan was this outgoing young man. he had a smile that was contagious. he loved playing sports. >> he was handsome. he was popular. he was the prom king. >> reporter: the beloved high school football player was scammed into sending explicit photos to whom he thought was a teenage girl on instagram.

>> they all have this in common. they're abusing a source of trust to try to get money out of you by pretending to be somebody they are not. >> reporter: peter lives right outside of cleveland. he said he's been a magnet for pesky robo calls. he tells us over the past decade, he's reported more than 300 of them to the ohio attorney general. but was shocked last year when he got a roared voice mail from a number appearing to be from the cleveland clinic just days after having a surgical procedure there. >> cleveland clinic for peter masitis. we called to check in about some health content. >> looked like they were trying to set up my surgery or something. but the surgery was already scheduled. they were baiting me as far as this phone call from the cleveland clinic. it wasn't from the cleveland clinic. >> reporter: the cleveland clinic tells abc news, we are aware some patients may be

receiving phoney robo calls claiming to follow up after a recent medical procedure or appointment. if patients have concerns about an incoming call they may receive, they can contact their physicians office or cleveland clinic customer service number. >> it's an anxiety to have to deal with these individuals. >> reporter: so by now we know the best practice with these calls is to not answer them or to hang up. we have further tips from the fcc. if you find yourself on a call and it says press a button to no longer receive calls, don't press the button. just hang up. they might take you pressing a button as a sign that you are willing to engage with them. the agency is also encouraging everybody to sign up for the do not call list. it is very easy to do on the ftc website, ftc.gov. we got a tip from one of the sharks. he was on gma a bit ago. he said if you're on one of these calls, if you answer a number you don't know, it's a good practice to not say hello. answer it and then just sit in silence.
