>> building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc7news. ama: a raging explosions at a storage facility in san jose. an expert says something is not right. good evening. connection with a huge fire at a san jose storage facility. there are so many unanswered questions including exactly what caught fire and how it started. lauren martinez got an expert to provide insight into what happened and what investigators will be looking for. reporter: investigators taking a closer look at what set off a fire at a public storage facility in san jose. fireworks could be heard going off in videos but officials are still looking for a point of origin and cause. >> which came first is hard to

say. our investigators will be working on that. the fireworks that were growing off during the firewood contributed that. reporter: it was reported wednesday evening. by thursday afternoon, crews were still putting out hotspots. officials estimated the fire burned 10,000 square feet. >> when you see multiple units at a fire this yards -- large, something is not right. reporter: this fire chief set of volatile fire could knock out a working strength or system. that is something that investigators are still looking into. >> once you sever the suppression system, it won't operate the way it needs to. the fire will rapidly spread. reporter: the two-story storage felisa liddy closed on itself, making itself difficult to access. 40 to 50 storage units are a complete loss from fire, smoke, water. >> to have that large of a fire going for that long, under those circumstances, they dumped a lot of water. reporter: one family put all of

their belongings in storage. they were told it's unlikely anything made it. officials are estimating it will take days to sift through. >> a lot of digging to get to where they need to go. how do you find where that is? reporter: the fire lead to a loss of valuables. no one has been reported her. >> haven't heard of life loss or injury. in terms of disruption that affects the public, that's not there. reporter: a person is in custody in connection to the fire. officials tell me with a scene like this, it could take days before information is released. lauren martinez, abc7news. ama: new developments in a case ri team has been covering extensively. after being accused in number for hyder plot, alonzo logwood pleaded no contest involuntary manslaughter. this case has become highly controversial for alameda district attorney pamela price

after her office dropped to murder charges against him earlier this month. a judge signed off on that decision. today's deal. his sentencing is set for next month. dan: new developments with the ongoing oakland a's stadium saga. nevada's governor signed a bill late today to help fund a new ballpark in las vegas. the team has started the process to get major league baseball's approval. the oakland mayor is pushing back after the commissioner of major league baseball blamed the city of oakland for losing the team. rob manfred's comments came at the end of an owners meeting today. the mayor responded and said the city was close to finalizing a deal for the howard terminal site when the a's announced that they had signed a binding agreement in vegas. >> there is no oakland offer, ok? they never got to the point where they had a plan to build a stadium at any site. >> is totally false. there was a concrete proposal

low 60's coast. pretty mild as the sun begins to sent inland. it will drop down into the 50's coast side. i will be deck with your father's day forecast, coming up. ama: dozens of new firefighters are being trained this week ahead of the summer fire season. it's during a controlled more -- burn in marin county and they are learning how to tame a wildfire. more than 100 firefighters are using 30 acres of open space as their classroom. new funding from the state is allowing california fire departments to hire more seasonal firefighters. >> i've been excited to change careers later in life. wanted to do something i was passionate about. loving every minute of it. firefighters are learning how to put out flames. it's happening less than a week before summer in an area where the grass is already high. dan: the new owners of san francisco's castro theatre cleared a major hurdle tonight.

another planet entertainment got a second sign off on removing the fixed orchestra streets -- seats after the board of supervisors cleared the way. the historic preservation commission ok to plan to replace the seats with motorized platforms. that will allow them to offer nighttime entertainment as well as film screenings. the commission approved a use permit for another planet entertainment to give the theater a new lease on life. a pe will have to meet with the neighborhoods lgbtq cultural district and submit an annual report to the commission. ama: of a mass shooting in pittsburgh that left 11 people dead in 2018. robert bowers faces 63 criminal counts including hate crimes in what is could to -- considered the deadliest antisemitic attack in u.s. history. he faces the death penalty of convicted. incidents are continuing to rise

rapidly across the united states including right here in the bay area. the increased hatred has caused local jewish organizations to ramp up their security person -- preparations. tim johns explains how. reporter: jewish communities have been facing increasing levels of anti-semitism. some jewish organizations are taking matters into their own hands. >> in 2020 two, we gave 35 active shooter training's. we trained 1300 community members around the bay area. reporter: the director of community security for the jewish community federation and endowment fund. over the past several months, his organization has helped local jewish groups learn about extra measures that they can take to keep people safe. >> the federation has a unique vantage point of the whole community. not just in the bay area but throughout northern california. because we are in relationship with dozens and dozens of jewish organizations.

reporter: there have been several high-profile anti-semitic incidents in the bay area. in 2022, numerous communities saw anti-jewish flyers distributed. earlier this year, a man fired into a jewish community center in san francisco. >> we counted 166 incidents here which is 137% increase. reporter: teresa works with the anti-defamation league. >> the march in charlottesville where individuals held tiki torches and chanted jews shall not replace us was almost a watershed moment. since then, we've seen right-wing extremists, we've seen anti-semites really coming out. reporter: 2023 could see even more incidents than previous years. one reason why the jewish community federation says they are planning on expanding operations to more people across northern california. >> it instills a greater sense

of confidence that we can respond when the worst happens as ordinary citizens. we can minimize harm and ultimately help save lives. reporter: tim johns, abc7news. dan: happening tomorrow, pride night at dodger stadium in los angeles and thousands of catholics plan to be there to protest. the dodgers will honor the sisters of perpetual indulgence with the community hero award. conservative catholics have condemned the award, saying the sisters mock religion. it's divided the catholic community. many support the sisters and their work with the lgbtq community. >> i grew up catholic. i can't understand any of the pushback. we are not a religious organization. we are not an anti-religious organization. dan: after the backlash, the dodgers rescinded the sisters invitation but they reinstated it when democratic politicians and lgbtq+ groups intervened on the sisters behalf.

more injured following the storm. the video shows extensive damage to much of the town. the fire chief says the north and east side are destroyed. communications towers are down, making it difficult for first responders to communicate to the hospital. dan: abc7news is committed to building a better bay area. one of the issues we are looking at tonight deals with the environment. it's no secret that our region is one of the leaders when it comes to electric vehicles on the road. the bay area is well on its way to meeting governor newsom's 2035 goal of all new vehicles in california being electrified. this march, more than half of the new vehicles registered were electrified including hybrids. that's the first time that's happened anywhere. j.r. stone with a look now at what's driving this trend. reporter: if it seems like you are seeing more new tesla's and priya says on the road in the san francisco bay area, experts say it's because you are.

a historic number. >> frankly, it is something for san francisco to be proud of. reporter: tom is with s&p global mobility. this past march, the san francisco bay area made u.s. history. the first major u.s. metropolitan market to have half of all new retail vehicle registrations as electric or hybrid vehicles. >> i think it's great. >> the gas mileage is great. >> i'm not surprised. >> the ev buyer in general skews more toward asian. the ev buyer also skews more towards younger and more towards higher income. when they look at those demographics for san francisco, there was a good fit with the ev buyers. reporter: the catch is this. while electric vehicle prices have come down, there is still more expensive -- they are still more expensive. the top percentages of electric

vehicles were found in wealthy cities outside of san francisco but still in the bay area. meaning that we are making strides but not everyone is in the market to buy one yet. >> if you own an electric car, typically it's pricier. so people in areas where there is maybe less -- where they have less money, they probably won't have the ability to get an electric car. reporter: -- >> the percentage of households that by and ev with household income over 200,000 is substantially higher than the percentage for the normal new vehicle purchase. reporter: with more electric vehicles headed to the road, the prices will continue to drop. just getting to this point is an accomplishment. j.r. stone, abc7news. ama: elk at the center of a debate to the north bay. there is news that could please activists who are trying to protect the animals. the chronicle reports the national park service is

pricing upfront rather than surprising consumers with extra fees at checkout. president biden hosted a meeting with several corporate leaders calling for more transparency. >> the companies are voluntarily committing to all in upfront pricing. this is a win for consumers and proof that our crackdown on junk fees has a real amount. ama: the ticketing issue reached a boiling point in november when fans faced exorbitantly high prices for taylor swift tour tickets. dan: here's an interesting item. netflix is trying out a new slogan. watching is good, eating is better. the streaming giant is opening up a pop-up restaurant in los angeles at the end of the month. netflix bites feature food from chefs on some of its cooking shows. san francisco's dominique kren is involved along with nadia hussein and an diners can taste their food but will not be able to meet the chefs. ama: the city of hayward
