>> building a better bay area. this is abc 7 news. >> congresswoman nancy pelosi requested federal health fighting the drug crisis in san francisco, and it is on its a year to the ongoing crackdown spent no crisis. we spoke with congressman poulos he as well as the dea about what changes the federal government will bring. >> for months we have been looking for a way to have federal participation in solving the problem. reporter: a plea from speaker emeritus nancy pelosi and federal help against the fentanyl crisis. friday, and answered.

>> we called upon the attorney general of the country to prioritize what is happening in san francisco. today i got the letter of response. reporter: san francisco part of operation overdrive, a department of justice initiative parking drug related violence and overdoses led by the dea. >> san francisco has a fentanyl crisis, and the dea wants to save lives. reporter: the special agent in charge says that means they are going after the people bringing drugs into the city. >> dea will be conducting enforcement operations and conducting surveillance and search warrants. we will arrest drug traffickers. reporter: the dea working along other federal agencies including the fbi as well as bolstering local and state efforts. >> as a whole government approach with san francisco police with new resources governor newsom put in such as

the california highway patrol and national guard. reporter: governor newsom calling the investment critical, saying we all must work together at all levels of government to shut down the poison pipeline and in this crisis of humanity on our streets. speaker emeritus pelosi making clear the federal efforts will not focus on arresting drug users. >> this is not about against users, it is about sellers, about people committing the crime of selling these drugs. reporter: chief bill scott says san francisco police will arrest drug users, so far making 45 arrests. >> people openly using dangerous drugs, we have to change that as well. we are arresting people engaged in that behavior, and we will continue to do so. reporter: abc 7 news. dan: you can watch the

the evening. dion: the sisters received a community hero award at the event tonight. dan: president biden will be in the bay area starting monday as part of a three-day visit. there are not a lot of details available but we know he will be at a fundraiser monday for his reelection campaign. it will take place at the home of steve wesley, a tesla investor and former state controller. tickets for the fundraiser cost up to $100,000, and they are sold out. florida governor desantis will be in northern california monday. he will make a stop in sacramento, the home turf of his sparring partner, governor newsom. reporter: calling out red states like freud is common for governor newsom, it would be weird if he did not. >> i do not know if you have heard of desantis.

the fire started last september and nearly destroyed 150 buildings, while scorching 4000 acres. two people were injured. the fire because the mill to close in september. dan: the man accused of causing a deadly home explosion in san francisco is facing new charges tonight. 53-year-old aaron price will be charged with murder with the february explosion. he was previously charged with voluntary manslaughter, reckless burning, manufacturing drugs and child endangerment. the explosion killed his wife and severely injured her caregiver. the bay area resident once described as the most dangerous man in america has died. the panic on papers whistleblower and antiwar activists daniel ellsberg died peacefully from pancreatic

cancer. he was 92. he was ase analyst when he leaked the pn papers in 1971 that revealed danning information about the u.s. policy in vietnam from 1945-1967. >> he was a courageous person and the pentagon papers made a difference in our understanding. many of us knew for a long time we were not being told the truth about what was going on in vietnam. dan: in a statement, ellsberg's family said he continued his passionate fight for peace through his life, adding he was a seeker of truth, and a patriotic truth teller, and antiwar activists, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, a dear friend to many and a countless inspiration to many more. dion: construction has started on the peak triangle that will light up on twin peaks san francisco. it is one of the symbols of pride.

the pink triangle once used to brand homosexuals and nazi concentration camps as a protest against homophobia. volunteers will finish setting up the triangle tomorrow morning. botanical garden is trying to raise $150,000 in an effort to save their newt population. several were found dead after they were stuck inside cracks in an 80-year-old pool. the pool needs to be redone to save the newts. reporter: you might not know it walking through the client pathways but the botanical garden is currently in a race against time. it is all because of these newts. >> we know they have been breeding here for at least 40 years. reporter: he has been studying newts for six decades, and says the 80-year-old pond they come to make in is in a state -- mate

in is in a state of disrepair. gardeners have found some newts dead. now the garden is raising money to create a new habitat for the newts. >> we will start by slowly draining it down. then we will collect the newts, move the adults to tanks. reporter: after that the cracks will be filled and a new pond will be put down. the garden has a narrow timeframe to get this done. they hope to start repairs in august and complete by september. without the pond, the local newt population could suffer permanent damage. he think's many would not know where to go come mating season. >> how many will find another part, we do not know. reporter: they are hoping to raise $150,000. they been have a save a newt

and also just have fun. like that's a big part of what we do out here, is to have a lot of fun. ♪ ♪ alliance redwoods and sonoma zip line adventures is a sub program of alliance redwoods. it's a not-for-profit. it's all under the same canopy, so to speak. ♪ ♪ people have been setting up tents and camping here since just after world war ii. so about 2010, we realized we had an opportunity to do ecotourism, so we opened our first zip line tour in 2010, and it just took off like a rocket. right now, as we speak, what's going on is outdoor education for public and private schools anywhere from two to four nights and doing outdoor sciences in the majestic redwoods. they're looking at crawdads, and they're doing geology and doing face-painting, and we've got a reptile center,

so they're learning through hands-on experiential learning in the outdoors. we just teach kids about different science courses, and we do a lot of cool challenge courses as well on ropes courses like zips, swings and ladders, things like that. we bring kids out here to challenge themselves so that they can grow as individuals. a lot of the teachers say the kids that don't excel in a classroom come out of their shell and shine in this environment. and so if they're gonna be stewards of this in the future, we need to be introducing to them now, and how do we care for this fragile environment that we've been entrusted. ♪ ♪ i love the fact that when people come ziplining, they become accidental philanthropists. when you go ziplining, you actually support the camp, alliance redwoods, and alliance redwoods provides scholarships for kids that are coming out to camp, but normally wouldn't be able to afford it. jim blake: the funds that we make through ecotourism and people coming, some of their dollars are being used to enable us to keep our prices at a reasonable rate.
