getting our dates wrong. let's look at the weather with shayla. the days are starting to get mixed together. shayla: i am right there with you. we have a gloomy start to the weekend. . cloudy conditions to start the day. we will see the marine layer start to burn off into the afternoon hours. plenty of sunshine inland. along the coast the clouds good linger a little longer. highs today ranging from the 60's to the 80's. we have plenty of sunshine coming our way. it will be a nice one today. the clouds move in overnight. as you head into father's day he will be a breezy one. temperature starting to dip into the the work week. winds picking up as well. we will break down when and where we will see the winds tomorrow and the full we can forecast coming up later in the show. i will toss it back to you. liz: new this morning, one person's debt after a car crash in oakland. this happened after seven last night near foothill boulevard

and vicksburg avenue. witnesses claimed the crash was caused by in illegal street race. police say the crash involved in adult pedestrian who was taken to the hospital. that person later died. investigators say the driver that hit the victim fled the scene. the former house speaker is asking to become part of what is known as operation overdrive, adding another layer to the ongoing crackdown on the city's fentanyl crisis. reporter tara campbell spoke with congresswoman pelosi, as well as the dea about what changes the federal government will bring. >> for months we have been looking for a way to have federal participation in solving the problem. tara: a plea from speaker emeritus nancy pelosi for federal help in the fight against the fentanyl crisis, and friday and answer. >> we called upon the attorney general of our country to prioritize what is happening in san francisco. i got the letter response from

him. tara: san francisco now part of operation overdrive, a department of justice initiative targeting drug-related violence and overdoses, led by the dea. >> san francisco has a fentanyl crisis. dea's number one rule is to save lives. tara: brian clark says that means they are going up the people bringing drugs into the city. >> dea personnel will be there identifying and conducting surveillance, conducting search warrant. we will be arresting drug traffickers. tara: the dea working with other agencies, including the fbi, as well as bolstering local and state efforts. >> as a whole of government approach with san francisco police, with the new resources governor newsom just put in such as the california highway patrol and the national guard. tara: governor newsom calling the federal investigation -- investment article, saying in part, "we all must work together

at all levels of government to shut down the poison pipeline and in this crisis of humanity on our streets." speaker emeritus pelosi making clear the federal efforts will not focus on arresting drug users. >> this is not about actions against users. it's about sellers. it's about people committing the crime of selling these drugs. tara: chief bill scott says san francisco police will continue to arrest drug users. so far, making 45 arrest. >> people are openly using dangerous drugs and intoxicated on dangerous drugs. we are arresting people who are engaged in that behavior. we will continue to do so. tara: tara campbell, abc 7 news. liz: you can watch her documentary on demand. the documentary is now available on our abc 7 bay streaming tv app.

after weeks of controversy, the dodgers honored the sisters of perpetual indulgence at their pride night. thousands of catholic protesters demonstrated against the decision. michelle fisher was at the stadium and has more. >> jesus christ will not be mocked. michelle: hundreds of demonstrators, many catholic, marched with signs along stadium way to the stadium entrance. >> this is a prayer, not a protest. we are basically playing for the so-called nuns. michelle: the sisters of perpetual indulgence. the group's use of religious imagery and the calls for a dodgers boycott over the team's recognition of the sisters. >> now you have this group of people that are going around mocking nuns, dressing as nuns. >> the message is to remember tommy lasorda who were devout

catholics and how they would feel if they were to see this. >> let's pray. michelle: the demonstration comes after the dodgers initially invited the sisters last month, then uninvited the group after catholic groups objected. finally re-inviting them amid backlash. >> go dodgers. michelle: fans celebrating the pride night, offering support. >> initially i was upset they resend the invitation but when they inevitably offered it back i was very grateful they did so. >> we wanted to honor the sisters because there is a lot of misinformation going around about what kind of organization they are. this is our little mini counterprotest. michelle: the dodgers and fans celebrating 10 years of pride night at the park. >> i stopped coming to dodger stadium years ago. they came last year and they had such a great time. it was all about family and

there are not a lot of details but we know he will be at a fundraiser monday for his reelection campaign. it will take link at the atherton home of steve wesley, a tesla investor and a california state controller. tickets cost up to $100,000 and they are sold out. florida governor ron desantis will also be in northern california on monday. he will make a stop in sacramento, the home turf of his sparring partner, governor newsom. >> calling out red states like florida is so common for governor gavin newsom it almost would be weird if he didn't. >> i don't know if you have heard of this guy, desantis. you have heard of him? >> ron desantis is doing a disgrace. >> governor desantis does it but unlike newsom he admits he is seeking the national office. thursday, santos urged that the change. >> serious fixation on the state

of florida. i think it is bizarre he does that. what i would tell him is, are you going to challenge joe? are you going to get in and do it or just sit on the sidelines and chirp? why don't you throw your hat in the ring and then will go ahead and talk about what is happening. >> strategist and cofounder of the lincoln project, a conservative group united against donald trump said this benefits both, especially newsom. >> he's getting republican governors to fight back and engage in a fight with him. the bottom line is ron desantis is fighting with the governor, not the president. he's not even fighting with the nominee of his own party -- the front runner for the nomination of his party. that's a big win for gavin newsom. >> this and this is expected on monday for a fundraising event. the california republican party is ready to embrace the visit. >> we look forward to seeing all republican candidates come out to california to get to know our

voters and make their case. whoever becomes the nominee, the california republican party is prepared to support that person 100%. liz: morgan reiner reporting. developing news in napa county where a wild fire is burning and the northwest of lake berry. cal fire says it has burned 103 acres but is being slowed by rugged terrain and crews have stopped forward progress. we have not heard of damage to structures or buildings. new development with a deadly fire last year. calfire says the mill fire was started by mill operations from a lumber company. the fire started last september and it damaged or destroyed nearly 150 buildings while scorching close to 4000 acres. two people died and three others were injured. the chronicle reports the mill where the fire started closed in november because of the fire investigation. the man accused of causing a

deadly home explosion in san francisco is facing new charges. prosecutors say aaron price be charged with murder for the february explosion in the outer sunset neighborhood. he was previously charged with involuntary manslaughter along with reckless burning, manufacturing drugs, and child endangerment. the explosion killed price's wife and injured her caregiver. 9 morning. shayla: good morning. looking live from the santa cruz skycam. still cloudy along the coast. the clouds will linger longer at the beaches. i will have your full forecast and what is in store for father's day later in the show. liz: homes for the un-housed. the new construction being built in the north bay. we will tell you about the big changes coming to the juneteenth celebration in oakland.

liz: it is committed to raising awareness about the thing a better bay area, and that includes organizio tackling homelessness. an old office building is being turned into a 41-studio apartments. construction is happening in san rafael on kerner and bella boulevard. the 33 million other project as part of a partnership between

marin county and nonprofit eden housing. the idea was born during the pandemic meant at the hotels were used for the homeless. >> converting an office building to support housing. it's a great use of basically derelict space. really will be life for those who get to live there. liz: eden housing hopes the building will serve as a model for organizations across the bay area. it's expected to be completed by 2024. a held on treasure island friday to celebrate the new infrastructure and retrofit project. the 126 million dollar project will improve on and off ramps on the bay bridge and will create bike lanes for cyclists. >> this work is intended to build a thriving community and recognize that part of that community has always exist -- already existed here and has needs that need to be met. liz: the project is expected to greet hundred jobs. funding will be coming from

federal, state, and local grants. it will support the existing community and up to 20,000 additional residents as the island continues to build new homes. it's expected to be completed in 2026. university of california botanical garden is trying to raise $150,000 to save their nude population. workers at the -- newt population. workers found several critters dead when they were found cracks in a pool. the pool needs to be done to resave the newts. tim johns got to check it out firsthand. tim: you might not know what walking through the quiet pathways but the botanical garden is currently in a race against time. it's all because of these newts. >> they have been breeding here for probably at least 40 years. tim: paul has been studding them for over six decades. he says the 80-year-old pond they come to mate in every year is in a state of disrepair. it has gotten so bad that garden staff members have found some

newts dead after getting stuck in cracks at the bottom of the pond. the garden is raising money to create a new habitat for the newts. >> we expect to start by slowly draining it down, then collecting the newts and moving them to tanks. tim: then the cracks will be filled in a new pond put down. the garden has a narrow time frame to get all of this done. they are hoping to start repairs in august and have them completed by september. without the pond, the local population could suffer permanent damage. he believes many simply would not know where to go and mating season. >> how many will find another pond? we don't know. those are unknowns. tim: the garden is hoping to raise $150,000. they created a save the newts campaign where people can donate money. so far the outpouring of support has been sick sectional -- been sensational and they think the

community. >> it's a treasure we are hoping to conserve and we very much appreciate the public support. tim: tim johns, abc 7 news. liz: san francisco held its second annual juneteenth kickoff event yesterday at city hall, the second year juneteenth has been recognized as a national holiday. mayor london breed hosted the event and what is being called a celebration of black music and art to commemorate the freedom of black americans. many say the event is also a representation of unity. >> i want to be the living representation of that, the embodiment of our people thriving. the embodiment of juneteenth celebrating our freedom. this is it. liz: community leaders are hoping other events like the large festivals in the fillmore and hunters point districts will help people understand this holiday is not just about black history, but american history. happening today, the big celebration kicks off at lake merritt amphitheater at noon. it runs through 8:00 p.m.

expect oakland's lake merritt to be packed for the holiday, unlike past years there will not be street closures. parking meters will be enforced as usual today and sunday. it will be free to park on monday. for a list of juneteentevts around the bay area, look to our website, abc7news.com. let's get a check of the forecast. father's day weekend, shayla. you say it will cool down tomorrow. shayla: we have a lot heading away this weekend. if you're outdoors for father's day, a bit on the cooler side. it will be windy but we have plenty of sunshine. not just yet though. a live look outside and you can see we're still talking about those cloudy conditions. the morning fog sticks around. we will see the chance for a little drizzle in the next few hours. by this afternoon sunshine makes its way to the picture. it will be pretty mild out there. temperatures on the warmer side as well. we see temperatures tomorrow and the wind speeds pick up.

taking a live look and you can see all the marine layer. we are talking about it blanketing the coast as you had inland. for the most part visibility looks good except for certain areas. half moon bay down to just four miles of visibility. definitely take it slower if you're heading on the road. for the rest of you guys looking pretty good. as we head into the afternoon hours the day will shape up to be pretty nice. the coast will hold onto the marine layer longer. we will see hi city from the 60's -- highs today from the 60's to the 80's. close to average. not quite as warm as yesterday. here's a look ahead to later today. we have the marine layer to start the day. that clears into the afternoon hours. the coast holding onto the cloud cover the fog a little longer. as you had inland we are talking about sunny skies, clearing conditions, and temperatures close to average. overnight we see the cloud cover make a comeback just in time for father's day.

we see the june gloom to start your father's day but by the afternoon it will be really nice and sunny. temperatures a bit cooler. we are starting to see a cooler trend and then the wind speeds also picking up into your father's day afternoon. if your grilling tomorrow, we prepared to hold onto your hat a bit. we will see some breezy conditions. that will stick around in the monday morning. also coming monday morning is there will be the cloud cover to start off your work week. here's a look at some of those wind speeds we could see tomorrow. expecting to see gust in afternoon upwards of 20 miles per hour. some areas looking like they will seek costs over 30 miles per hour. really breezy conditions into your sunday afternoon. that sticks around into the evening hours. by monday you will notice those winds but not quite as intense as what we are forecasting for tomorrow afternoon. highs today. he will be a nice one. we have the onshore flow and that is keeping temperatures on the cooler side. 79 for san jose.

and the -- is swamped with passport applications. it can take three months. delays put a mom and daughter in a harrowing predicament. the daughter did not have her passport and the trip was scheduled to begin today. they contacted 7 on your side's michael finney. >> it was the most stressful things i've done in my life. michael: christian michelle and her daughter grace had only days left before their flight to europe. >> i was like i don't have a passport yet and we leave in a week. michael: grace applied to renew her passport month ago but as the departure drew close she still did not have it. >> they could tell me nothing. the status stayed the same for two months. we are now reviewing your document. michael: time was ticking away without a passport they could not go. race was scheduled to perform with her dance club in three countries on a european tour. >> my teammates were like, i'm praying for you. you have got to get there. michael: while in europe they

planned to attend her uncle's swearing-in ceremony as an army commander in italy. they had to be there. she kept calling the passport office. which you get the passport in time? >> waiting on hold for hours, literally. your whole time is two hours. i was trained asked the ladies do i have a 1% chance, a 50% chance, 99% chance of this happening? michael: they told her to make an appointment at an office to get the passport issued on the spot. the only problem, the appointments are all booked. >> there are no appointment available anywhere in united states. is crazy. michael: she started asking government officials for help. she tried gavin newsom, senator feinstein, congress member to sonja, even secretary of state blinken. when that didn't help, kristen got creative. >> i came up with the idea of also sending a fruit basket. michael: she sent a fruit basket to the arizona passport office

that was handling grace's application. >> i will send them something good. i will get their attention and make them feel loved so hopefully they can help me. michael: she never heard back. >> contact 7 on your side. michael: right away the agency delivered. >> my husband came in and said i got it. i was like ahh. i was so relieved. michael: the passport arrived the next morning, down to the wire, but they are off to europe. >> 7 on your side, the one thing that did work. thank you so much. michael: i am michael finney, 7 on your side. liz: it now takes up the 13 weeks for routine processing and up to nine weeks for expedited processing. that cost an extra $60. the times do not include mailing time. glad it worked out for them. still to come, deadly tornadoes touched down with more severe

announcer: building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. liz: good morning. thanks again for joining us this half-hour. let's start with the forecast with shayla. shayla: good morning. 50's and 60's out the door. also seeing a little bit of a breeze. up in the 70's a clear like today. pretty mild -- clear lake today. hi nice afternoon is heading away. high temperatures ranging from the 60's to the 80's. the cloud cover hanging on a little longer as he had to the coast. a cool down comes tomorrow. we will start to see those winds pick up into father's day afternoon. we will break down when and where you will see the wind speeds and what the rest of the week is going to look like. for now, back to you. liz: 30 million people are on

alert from colorado to florida this holiday weekend. 12 tornadoes were reported in last 24 hours and over two dozen reported in the last two days. towns hit with high winds are destroyed and becoming unrecognizable. melissa don reports. melissa: more than 1000 reports of severe weather, including two dozen tornadoes slamming parts of the country within days. a confirmed ef-0 touching down a new jersey on friday. in the small texas town of perry ton nef-2 -- and one of the victims, becky randall, leaves behind a husband, two sons and four grandchildren. >> more than a dozen homes were completely destroyed. the winter here behind me, eight people were inside when the tornado hit.

miraculously they all survived. melissa: in the florida panhandle more than a foot of rain and more than 100 rescued. one person died after a tree fell on their home. in mississippi, a person was killed and thousands of homes damaged. in ohio, thousands left without power after a storm caused severe damage throughout the northwest part of the state. the system sending debris flying and bringing large hail and tornado threats. the threatening conditions expected to last through the weekend as an excessive heat warning persists through taxes and louisiana te -- louisiana. liz: an arizona man is dead after being mauled by a bear in a highly unusual unprovoked attack. the victim was sitting in a chair on his property drinking his morning coffee when it happened. authorities say the bear dragged the man about 75 yards and was actually consuming the man as neighbors tried to intervene. >> imagine going from zero,

relaxing and having a cup of coffee, all of a sudden a neighbor is screaming for help. they did respond. i think they yelled at the bear. they did what they could. when individual home to horn -- honked a horn but it did not help mr. jackson. liz: a neighbor shot and killed to the bear. officials will do an autopsy on the bear and said they could help determine what may have led up to the attack. the bay area resident once described as the most dangerous man in america has died. pentagon papers whistleblower daniel ellsberg died peacefully in his home in kensington on friday from pancreatic cancer. he was 92. he was a defense analyst when he leaked the pentapers in 1971 whichled damning information about the policy in vietnam from 1945 to 1967. >> he was a courageous person. the pentagon papers made a big

difference in our understanding. many of us knew for a long time that we were not being told the truth about what was going on in vietnam. liz: ellsberg's family says h continued his passionate fight for peace throughout his life, adding daniel was a seeker of truth and patriotic truth teller and antiwar activist, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather and he will be dearly missed by all of us. the family of 23-year-old alexis gave is holding a memorial service in concord. it starts at 3:00 p.m. at the globe alley creation and funeral services on commerce avenue. the public is invited to attend. gabe went missing in january of 2020 to after visiting her ex-boyfriend in antioch. police say he killed her and spread her remains in multiple locations. autopsy and forensic tests have been completed. his or -- her remains are being returned to her family. a funeral will be held june 19

at 1:30 in front of diablo valley funeral home chapel. a national study of home prices declared the bay area has the fastest dropping market values in the country. in the east, prices are on their way up. here is reported leslie brinkley. >> this is the summer of uncertainty. uncertainty about interest rates and homeowners insurance. leslie: real estate agents put the bay area at the top of their list for fastest dropping real estate values in the nation, with san francisco, oakland, hayward tapping the top spot. that's a one-your snapshot from the start of 2022 to the start of 2023. drilling into just the last few months shows something different happening. >> i would not exactly look at some of these price trends and say there is a fire sale for real estate in the san francisco bay area. we have seen appreciation in

many communities in the east bay in particular. leslie: in danville, the medium detached single-family homes sold for $2.4 million last summer. by january of this year, the median price dropped to $1.6 million. now prices have bounced back up over $2 million. fremont has seen a big jump in median prices for single-family homes. richmond is the only community where prices are still sliding. another twist. homeowners are attending the price their home just at or below market value, leading to some properties now selling for above list price. any decrease or even sustained stabilization of interest rates could mean the fall looks a lot different from the summer. in the east bay i am leslie brinkley, abc7news. liz: sam trans has r

affordable transit option for some residents, ride plus. it's a micro transit service. passengers book rides online for a nap and can request specific pickup and drop-off locations, as long as there they within the service sounds. -- service zones. >> it covers areas that may not have the population density for regular giant buses. it is service on demand. use your app. you can go online and even call to arrange your ride. the ride will not cost you any more than a normal bus ride. liz: the service is available for residents of half moon bay, east palo alto and belhaven. it will be free starting this sunday through july 31. after that, they will have to pay a small fee through the app. flowers and rainbows will be in abundance at the florida bill at the san francisco meant. we spoke with the cofounder tina barclay on a weekday stream show abc 7 at 7:00. >> it produces luxury flower

. reggie aqui went behind the scenes in emeryville to see how years of hard work brought wonder, humor and romance together. ♪ reggie: welcome to pixar's campus where there is a fairy monster at the front desk, a fashion diva at the fireplace, and a huge bo peep peeping her newest neighbors. it is "elemental," a story about a fiery woman and a watery man. how is that relationship going to work? >> sorry, buddy. elements don't mix. reggie: what is "elemental" about? >> a water character and fire character who are in love. it's about her family, the fire family living in a city not made for fire people. can she allow herself to fall in love with a water guy? >> make like a stream and flow somewhere else. >> kitts haram com, but there's an immigrant story underneath it.

it is like the emotional core. >> the city was not made with fire people in mind. reggie: how long did it take to make "elemental?" >> it was pitched 7, 8 years ago. that is not the entire crew working on the movie for that long. it goes through different stages of development and story artists and concept artist. >> how are you doing? >> living the dream. reggie: monsters. you have seen incredibles. you have seen luca. if i thought of the hardest thing to put together in a film it would be fire and water. this is a major challenge. >> from a visual communication standpoint they were very difficult to work with. tearing them together into a scene was super challenging. >> every department separately when they heard the pitch was like, all the puzzles in their head at once. lighting had a tough time because amber is a light. how delighted character who admits light herself? it took a long time. i'm really proud of the final look.
