month was met with protests today in the north bay. it all happened outside a petaluma library, where demonstrators pushed back against today's drag story hour event. good evening. thanks for joining us. i'm dion lim. those protesting say the event is not appropriate for children. abc 7 news reporter cornell barnard tells us they were met with some opposition. >> hey hey, ho ho. cornell: this large protest was happening outside the petaluma library on saturday, where drag story hour with drag king vera was happening inside. elizabeth noris brought her child. >> drag queens are awesome, kids love them. they are larger-than-life. they are fun. cornell: this group of dimmest -- demonstrators disagree. they believe drag performers should not be reading to kids. >> what i'm against is explicit sexuality, i do not care if it is gay or straight.

being put upon young, innocent children. >> i just feel like we are losing our moral values in our country. this is not right to do this to children. cornell: folks supporting the event were also here and quickly seemed to outnumber anti-drag protesters. >> my feeling is, if you think that there is something not right about bringing your children to a drag story hour, don't bring your children. cornell: chelsea from lgbtq says nonprofit positive images says with hundreds of anti-queer and drag laws across the country, events like this need community support. >> the people opposing at are sending a message that they think it is unsafe or somehow adult or sexualizing simply to be queer and trans in public, and that is not the case. cornell: the library director said they were prepared but just to be safe, they notified

petaluma police to help keep the protests peaceful. >> libraries across the nation are experiencing these kinds of issues and challenges, and it has only been ramping up last year. >> i'm not scared of men in dresses. i'm scared of school shootings. >> we will never be divided. cornell: drag king vera declined to speak to us about the event, which was closed to the media. anti-drive demonstrators say they plan to protest at future events in sonoma county. in petaluma, cornell barnard, abc 7 news. dion: these demonstrations began a year ago, when five men disrupted drag queen story hour at the san lorenzo library. the sheriff's office said they were described as members of the far-right groups the proud boys . a hate crime investigation was launched, but "the standard" report no charges were filed by the d.a.'s office, because it did not meet "hate crime criteria." in response to the protest, the library kicked off every month is pride month series, and the

drag story hour has a safety marshall program. the beacon of hope is now ready to shine bright on twin peaks. the installation of the 28th annual pink triangle was created today. 450 volunteers laid out 175 bright pink tarps to form the shape of a triangle. it was once used to brand people suspected of being gay in nazi concentration camps. but now, the pink triangle is a symbol of protest against homophobia. >> leave it up to san francisco to take a symbol of hatred and turn it into something that means something more than that, that means something that is celebratory in nature. dion: the triangle installation today included a special dedication ceremony featuring the sf lives being gay freedom band and the country's first-ever drag laureate, d'arcy drollinger. this is the first year since 2010 that the city has had a brand-new triangle. >> we are the only city in the world that has a giant pink triangle hovering over the city

wildfire is burning. cal fire says that fire is 45% contained and started at about 5:30 yesterday and has burned 103 acres. at least 14 engines and a helicopter are fighting those flaze. no word yet a what caused that blaze. new developments, a man faces charges, accused of starting last year's oak fire near yosemite in mariposa county . yesterday, investigators arrested 71-year-old edward wackerman, who lives in the area of the fire, of several felony charges. the wildfire consumed nearly 20,000 acres and destroyed 127 homes along with more than 60 other structures. smoke from that wildfire prompted air quality advisories for the bay area last july. happening now, a public memorial for an east bay woman whose murder and his appearance we have been following for more than a year. that memorial for alexis gabe

started at 3:00 p.m. in concord and goes until 8:00 tonight. the 23-year-old went missing last year after visiting her ex-boyfriend in antioch. police say he killed gabe and spread her remains in multiple locations. now her remains are back with her family. >> we have waited so long, six, seven months for this, and we are just glad that we are here now, and we are just able to lay our daughter to rest. dion: a funeral service will be held on monday. gabe's family plans to their last farewell privately. for a hit-and-run crash that killed a woman. it happened after 7:00 p.m. at the intersection of vicksburg avenue. that woman was crossing the street in a crosswalk and she was hit by a black mercedes. police say the car that hit her was involved in an illegal street race. a high water rescue took a

for children fighting critical illness, you can make the stars align. because when we come together, hope and joy will shine. help us make every wish come true. ♪ ♪ dion: now to a dramatic rescue caught on camera. a florida sheriff's deputy jumped into action to save a man who nearly drowned in fast-moving floodwaters. we do want to warn you, this video may be upsetting to watch. this is the deputy's body camera during the downpour early friday morning. he apparently saw a driver who was trapped in the raging water, and when he rushed to his aid, both were nearly swept away. the video, as you can see, goes black when they were sucked into a drainage pipe and underneath the four lanes of a highway. >> they were submerged for

nearly 30 seconds and traveled nearly 100 feet underwater. they eventually resurfaced on the other end of the roadway, lucky to be alive. dion: fortunately, the deputy and the driver did not face major injuries. both are said to be doing ok. new details now, the collapsed structure of interstate 95 in philadelphia will reopen within two weeks. that is the word from pennsylvania's governor. that came shortly after president biden took a helicopter tour over the damaged segment of the highway today. mr. biden pledged federal funds and longer-term support for a permanent fix of the vital road. the stretch of the east coast's main north-south highway collapsed after a tractor trailer hauling gasoline flipped over and caught fire underneath. people across the bay area took part in celebrations marking america's second independence day. ♪ we will take a look at the highlights from juneteenth celebrations, recognizing the holiday beyond black america.

dion: google has gotten the green light for a massive expansion, said to be the largest residential project ever in mountain view. this week, city council members approved a redevelopment plan for the north bayshore neighborhood shown on this map. google wants to build an urban village with 7000 new homes, 3 million square feet of office space, and more than 26 acres of parks. 15% of the units will be set aside for lower- and middle-income housing. that project is expected to take 30 years. no word yet on when construction will start. over in the east bay, oakland held its 14th annual fam bam juneteenth celebration. thousands turned out for the festival around lake merritt.

it featured things like dance performances, a skating rink, but it was also a day to promote unity and pride. one vendor says she is excited the celebration gives people an appreciation of history. >> to be able to celebrate it as and acknowledge what we have been through as historic and something that should not be forgotten. i know, across the nation, there's a lot of, you know, turmoil about what should be included in textbooks, but it is important that we know what we come from, we know where we are going, and we have a sense, understanding our purpose, and learning from the past. dion: the event featured over 100 food and merchandise vendors. the celebration for community and culture will continue until 8:00 tonight. a freedom celebration marked this juneteenth weekend in san francisco's fillmore district. today's festival filled eight city blocks from geary boulevard to fulton street and featured dozens of retail and food vendors along with free carnival

rides, games, live music, and a performance by the grammy award-winning gospel duo mary mary. mayor london breed also took part in these festivities. the fillmore district was a hub of african-american culture in the 1940's, earning the nickname "harlem of the west." and check this out. people also marks juneteenth in san jose today, during the 42nd annual juneteenth in the streets festival. that event celebrants the arts, culture, and heritage of santa clara county's black community and the richness of african-american history and culture. organizers say as the community reemerges after a long year of struggle, celebrating together is especially meaningful. you can find a long list of events at our website, abc7news.com, including events like the juneteenth short films screening on the peninsula and the community celebration in san jose. you can get more details on abc7news.com. lots happening this weekend. we have father's day as well.
