announcer: this is be abc7news. liz: more than a year after alexis gabe vanished, a sense of closure for her family and those who knew her best. good morning. it is sunday, june 18. i am liz kreutz. thanks for joining us on this father's day. first, let's start with a quick look at the weather with meteorologist shayla girardin. shayla: good morning. going to be cool this father's day and very windy. temperatures right now comfortable out the door in the 50's and 60's to start. definitely have the sweater handy. this afternoon, windy conditions. we are just seeing the very start of it.

not bad. san francisco seeing winds shive 20 miles an hour. despite sfo over 20 miles an hour. inland even breezier picking up in the teens. that will continue over the day. the plus side of the wind is it is moving out the marine layer so we have some nice sunshine to start the day. we will clear through the afternoon. sunny skies, plenty of wind, and cooler temperatures. we will break down all of that in the full forecast. liz: thank you. lanes have reopened on westbound i 80 after a fiery crash involving a tanker truck in rodeo just after midnight before the willow avenue exit. the damaged tanker spilled diesel towards two cars and traffic. a person was freed from one car and crews quickly put out the flames. >> it is amazing people escaped both crashes relatively

unharmed. we had one moderate injury being transported currently. there were no fatalities at this time. liz: lanes were closed for over two hours. the gas tanker spilled across the right lanes of the freeway. they were able to gradually assess the damage, mitigate, and reopen traffic. alexis gabe's family held a memorial saturday night giving the public one last chance to say goodbye. the family had been waiting until all of her remains were located. ryan curry spoke with her family who sends the service was not only about reflecting but moving forward -- says the service was not only about flipping but moving forward. reporter: months of sorrow grief is known that with closure as they held a memorial saturday night in celebration of life. >> it has been tough months for us. i'm just glad we can also bring her home.

reporter: her car with oakley but she was missing. police believe her boyfriend killed her. police killed him as they were serving him an arrest warrant in june of last year. a tip in november led investigators to her remains outside sacramento. now with her remains back in the family's possession, they are choosing to remember their favorite moments together. >> a bubbly personality, she is very funny. she is the jokester of the family. she likes to make fun of everyone, especially her mom. reporter: dozens showed up in concord to pay the respect. though memorial was open to the public. they say the community has helped them through the most difficult time in their life. >> some people have gone through similar things and lost family members or children so having

people who gets it i think has been very helpful. reporter: the family says the focus now turns to finding justice. they want charges filed against jones' mother for allegedly helping her son cover up the murder. >> we will be battling this in court. reporter: monday, there will be a funeral procession starting at this memorial home and ending at the castro valley crematorium. the family says anyone can join the procession. however, they say only the family will be allowed inside the crematorium. they say they want alexis all to themselves on her final day. liz: new developments in the north bay. a wildfire in napa county is 80% contained. calfire says they are busy putting out hotspots. the fire started friday night and has burned 103 acres. no buildings have been damaged or destroyed. the cause is under

investigation. an event was met with protests where demonstrators pushed back against a drag story hour event they believe is inappropriate for children. cornell barnard tells us they were met with opposition. reporter: happening outside the petaluma library saturday where drag story hour with striking vera was happening -- drag king vera was happening inside. >> they are larger-than-life, they are fun. reporter: this group of demonstrators disagree. they believe drag performers should not be reading to kids. >> i am against explicit sexuality. i don't care if it is gay or straight, being put upon young, innocent children. >> i feel like we are losing moral ground in our country.

this is not right to do this to children. >> ♪ i'm going to let it shine ♪ reporter: folks supporting the event were also here and quickly seemed to outnumber protesters. >> my feeling is if you think there is something not right about bringing children to a drag story hour, don't bring your children. reporter: with hundreds of anti-queer and drag laws being passed across the country, events like this need community support. >> people opposing this are sending the message they think it is unsafe or somehow adult or sexualizing simply to be queer and trans in public. that is not the case. reporter: library directors say they were prepared for the protest. to be safe, they notify petaluma police to help keep the protest full. >> libraries across the country are experiencing these issues

and challenges. it has been ramping up the last year. >> i am scared of school shootings. reporter: drag king declined to speak to us about the story our event that was closed to the media. demonstrators say they plan to protest at future events in petaluma county. liz: san francisco's beacon of hope in honor of pride month is shining bright. the installation of the pink triangle was completed yesterday paid 450 volunteers laid out 175 bright pink tarps to form the shape of the triangle. it was once used to bring people accused of being gay in nazi concentration camps. >> we want to take a symbol of hatred and turn it into something that means something more than that, that means something that is celebratory in

juneteenth celebrations are in full swing this weekend. tara campbell was among the thousands as they took to the streets. reporter: the moves, the music, the food, and the freedom. the freedom festival in san francisco's fillmore district. thousands showing up to usher in juneteenth. >> i am from fillmore. i live in the east bay now. it means a lot. r the fillmore district is steeped in african american culture.

in the 1940's, earning the nickname "harlem of the west." he wants his grandson to know it all. >> i would like for him to know his history as he grows because your past is very important for the present. >> it means a lot to me because i am born and raised here. this is how i know it. reporter: she is one of the dozens of vendors spanning eight blocks of fillmore street. >> we are here holding hands, talking, hugging. reporter: among them, mayor london breed who was raised in the neighborhood. >> we are bringing juneteenth and black people back to san francisco! [applause] it is a way for us to come together and uplift our community and remember the challenges that still exist but to also celebrate and elevate one another. reporter: across the bay, thousands showed up in oakland

for the juneteenth celebration now in its 14th year. >> to celebrate and acknowledge what we have been through is historic and should not be forgotten. reporter: it is as important as ever for the community to unite. >> i know across the nation there is a lot of turmoil on what should be included in textbooks and businesses. preserving history is important so we know where we have come from, we know where we are going, and we have an understanding of our purpose in learning from the past. reporter: tara campbell, abc 7 news. liz: people also marked juneteenth in san jose yesterday during the 42nd annual juneteenth in the streets festival that celebrates the arts, culture, and heritage of santa clara black community and the richness of african american history and culture. let's get a check of the forecast with meteorologist shayla girardin. it is going to be windy.

taylor: is going to be windy. plan to hold onto your hats outside this afternoon. we are starting the morning with lots of sunshine. that is one perk of all the wind, it is moving the marine layer out. we are starting to see the breeze, especially into the afternoon. that will linger into monday as well. below average temperatures continue this week. we have a cool week ahead. a bit of a warmup for the first day of summer midweek. not seeing much wind yet. san francisco you are noticing winds already above 20 miles an hour. gusts at sfo at 25. most of you in the teens inland. these are going to pick up in the afternoon. most of you will see winds 20 to 30 miles an hour, gusts, excuse me. everyone noticing the gusty conditions in the afternoon. the coast is going to see the windiest conditions. that will die down a tad

overnight but not by much. monday morning again we have the wind rolling in. most of it this afternoon into this evening. highs today cooler than recently. just making it to 80 in fairfield. sunny conditions thanks to all of the wind we have been seeing. it will definitely be on the cooler side. with the cooler temperatures and onshore winds, we will see cooler conditions in the evening. many will be seeing overnight lows the 40's. we have cool conditions today sticking around tomorrow. a bit of a warm up midweek. not quite as much as we want but just in time for the start of summer. we dip again the end of the week. a lot of below average temperatures coming this week. not much sunshine other than today. that is the silver lining. we have sunshine this afternoon.

accidental drug overdose deaths in san francisco have been going up. a majority caused by fentanyl. roughly one third hapen here in the tenderloin south of market. the agency says they now have anywhere from six to 10 officers patrolling the area daily. is it working? it has been six weeks since the tenderloin crackdown. what have you seen? >> pretty much what we are stopping vehicles with hundreds of thousands of potentially lethal doses of fentanyl. liz: according to the governor's office, since the start of the operation, they have seized over four kilos, i enough to potentially kill 2.1 million people, almost three times the population of san francisco. the seized methamphetamine, cocaine, and 31 grams of heroin print the agency has made 92

arrests including arrests relating to possession of fentanyl and domestic violence. >> our focus is on traffic. it has to get here somehow. it has to be delivered to san francisco somehow. very often, that is done in vehicles. liz: the agencies working on this acknowledged six weeks is just the beginning. they say their efforts are far from over. >> we will as long as it takes. that is my commitment. liz: what is your message to drug dealers in the tenderloin? >> my message is that you might not see uniformed national guard soldiers on your streets but we are behind the scenes. we will figure out who you are, who your bosses are, who long-duration money, -- who launders your money and gives you the drugs to sell in the city. we are going to come after you and get you. liz: critics of the operation

say they are concerned this could lead to another war on drugs that would disproportionately impact people of color. supporters like the mayor and the folks in our story say we have reached a tipping point where hundreds are dying on the streets every year and something needs to change. that was just part of our story. you can see my full report on our apps and at abc7news.com
