facing extreme weather conditions. it is expected to feel like 122 degrees today in parts of texas and more severe storms are in the forecast from the gulf coast to south carolina. even parts of the pacific northwest are seeing wild weather, including this waterspout along the columbia river. but we begin in the south. this morning after days of tornadoeshat left five dead and hundreds of thousands without power. states along the gulf coast are bracing for more severe weather. 30 million americans already under heat alerts from texas to mississippi with record heat possible in dallas, new orleans and houston are stationed there showing this sweltering forecast. it's pretty much hot and dry. the next time we could see some relief is in the form of not necessarily lower temperatures, but lower humidity. hot hot. really hot. couldn't even go in the pool. it could feel like 122 degrees in some areas. the heat expected to ignite severe storms like this one in waco, texas, saturday.

reporting live in the backyard. storms also swept across part of oklahoma, ripping the roof off this community center in laverne. oh, my god. one person was killed after a tree fell on their house. an ef2 tornado also touched down yesterday in logan county, arkansas, leaving a trail of destruction. ian, meanwhile, in florida, dramatic video shows the moment a deputy trying to rescue a man trapped in floodwaters was swept under water for nearly 30s. you believe what just happened to us? both the deputy and the man are now okay, but the florida panhandle is now bracing for more heavy rain and damaging winds. oh, my god. farther south in florida, a waterspout brought chaos to this beach in clearwater friday, sending people running for cover. two people were sent to the hospital with minor injuries. all of that

video really showing the power of mother nature back in texas. the heat is bringing attention to a bill that was signed by governor greg abbott just last week, which will stop locally mandated water breaks for construction workers. companies had argued that the local rules made it hard to do business. that new law will take effect in september. secretary of state anthony blinken is in china for a high stakes meeting with top government officials. he's hoping to improve relations after months of rising tensions, including dangerous close calls between the us and chinese military. and the controversy over that chinese spy balloon shot down over the us earlier this year. abc's matt rivers is in beijing with the very latest with the secretary. matt, good morning. well, andrew, this meeting between xi jinping, the president of china and secretary of state antony blinken, no doubt the apex of what has been a whirlwind 36 hours on the ground for the top us diplomat here in beijing. this, of course, comes after a series of crucial meetings with china's top two diplomats that led to

this point. xi jinping speaking briefly in front of reporters at the beginning of this meeting, saying, quote, it was very good that the us and china could have these meetings, saying that he hopes this could lead to more positive developments in the relationship. secretary blinken saying that he wants china and the us to continue to move forward in their relationship as well. andrew i can't overstate the importance of the meeting between these two men. all right, matt rivers for us in beijing, thank you. president biden hits the campaign trail today. he's headed to california to announce a new climate investment. it comes after his first reelection campaign rally this weekend promoting his record with union workers. and. abc's ike ejiochi is now here with more. ike good morning, brianna and good morning. today in california, president biden is set to announce hundreds of millions of dollars of new funding to tackle the country's climate crisis, something he says is an urgent need for more here on the morning after kicking off his campaign in the battleground state of pennsylvania this morning,

president biden is making his way across the country to california. he'll first travel to palo alto in the bay area for a mix of campaign fundraisers and official business, highlighting the urgency of taking bold action on the climate. a white house official says the president will tour a coastal wetland and announce more than $600 million for climate adaption projects funded by the inflation reduction act and the bipartisan infrastructure law projects like better protecting our nation's power grid from extreme weather events, as well as preparing coastal and great lakes communities for climate change. impacts like sea level rise, tidal flooding and storm surges. biden's focus on infrastructure was also a central point of his visit to pennsylvania over the weekend, where he took an aerial tour of the collapsed portion of i-95 in philadelphia, a roadway that carries over 160,000 cars a day. there's no more important project right now in the country. pennsylvania governor josh shapiro says a temporary fix to the span is coming much

quicker than expected. we will have i-95 reopen within the next two weeks. meanwhile in the race for the white house, republicans continue to attack former president donald trump's legal exposure. in a recent interview, republican presidential candidate chris christie criticizing trump's conduct. act we would not be here if donald trump had simply returned. the documents, the dozens of times the government asked him to return them. the times that the grand jury served a subpoena for them. he waited, waited and waited, defied the government, and then wound up having his house raided. now, members of biden's campaign say he won't hold regular rallies until later in the campaign season. biden plans to travel to chicago and maryland before the end of the month. andrew ike, thank you. investigators are trying to solve a mystery in kansas. more than 90 letters with a suspicious white powder were sent to lawmakers and other public officials, many of them republican. us officials say so

far, all the powder tested has been deemed not a biohazard. police near chicago are asking for the public's help as they investigate a mass shooting there. one person was killed and 22 others were wounded at a juneteenth celebration in willowbrook, illinois. hundreds of people were at that event in a strip mall parking lot. there is no word this morning yet on a motive or suspects. and police in san francisco say two people were wounded when gunmen in separate cars fired at each other along the city's popular waterfront in a target incident. four other people were injured, including two girls hit by one of the cars. we turn now to the job market and an indicator that americans are beginning to take it a bit slower at the office. it comes just as more companies are looking for help from teenagers. this morning, new evidence that americans notorious for working long hours at the office, even during summer, are finally cutting back . i'm also going to need you to go ahead and come in on sunday to saying no to those extra

hours, the average number of hours worked per week, dropped to 34.3 last month. that's below the pre-pandemic average. the wall street journal reports in many cases, companies are finally filling open positions, taking the burden off everyone else. but in many other cases, workers are simply choosing a better work life balance. demand is high everywhere and that could leave more work for teenagers this summer. places like this water and amusement park in maine rely on teen workers. all season long. so we're all kind of battling for a relative small market demand is especially high for lifeguards this summer due to a shortage. that's forced thousands of pools to reduce hours or close altogether. but from camp workers and sports instructors to retail and restaurant jobs, teen hiring overall is up this year, and so is the pay. now averaging nearly $15 an hour, a 9% increase from last summer. construction offers one of the highest wages for teens at nearly $18 an hour. if teens are relatively low paid compared to other workers in the labor

the other boats also braved the rough waters to help them. we turn now to more close encounters with bears from boston to colorado to a deadly attack in arizona. abc's derrick dennis reports this morning, an intruder caught on camera in colorado. a bear climbing up this home, then entering through a window before eventually escaping one of several recent bear encounters in the us in a boston suburb. a bear roaming the streets came within a few feet of jennifer newman as she was gardening. i was just standing right here. i was crouched down, you know, pulling these weeds. here they are. and the bear just kind of made his way right there. she was able to run off. but in yavapai county, arizona, 66 year old stephen jackson was attacked by a black bear and dragged about 75ft away from the outside of his home while enjoying his morning coffee, neighbors were honking horns and making other sounds to try and distract the bear. but nothing worked. a neighbor shot the bear, but jackson died from

his injuries as a bear. the two attack somebody in the morning like that daylight. it was daylight. deadly bear attacks are rare, but the us population of black bears is on the rise and so are the number of close encounters. in recent weeks. a bear was seen at a florida beach. one was captured at tampa international airport, another hanging out in a tree in d.c. experts say one major factor is we're developing more land pushing bears out of their habitats, forcing them to adapt. if you see a black bear, the best thing to do is raise your hands really high. speak firmly . hey, bear. hey, bear. and just slowly start backing up. the worst thing you could do is turn your back to a bear and run after that, apparently unprovoked attack in arizona, authorities are planning to perform a postmortem examination of the bear to learn why it mauled the man. experts say a fatal bear attack happens on average only once a year. andrew rhiannon our thanks to derek

headlines not for the big marlin caught this weekend, but because the biggest marlin was disqualified. at stake, millions of dollars in prize money. a fishing team from north carolina has lost out on an enormous cash prize after being disqualified from a fishing tournament over a technical city. saturday marked the last day of the big rock blue marlin tournament in north carolina. a local boat named sensation had battled for more than six hours to reel in a giant blue marlin, bringing it back to shore after 11 p.m. do you guys think this fish is going to be more than 500 pounds? the fish looked to be over the 500 pound threshold, which would bring in an extra cash prize. hundreds gathered as the fish was hoisted for weighing. it tipped the scales at 690 pounds. the crew of the sensation even looked ready to reel in the big prize. $3.5
