5:06 pm
tonight we are seeing dashcam footage of the moment the gunfire broke out as people run for their lives. for more on the video and the latest of investigation, let's go to reporter lena howland live in the city. reporter: this video is incredible. before we show it, we want to warn you that some people may find it disturbing. it shows the moment that gunshots first rang out outside of fisherman's wharf commitment less than that later, the moment the two suspect vehicles raced through an intersection before hitting two young girls with their breaks. new video recorded by a dashcam just blocks away from pier 39 shows the terrifying moments when gunshots were not. it captures people on the elevated walkway and street below, running to safety. other people can be seen ducking for cover behind a parked cars. seconds later as the vehicle approaches a section of northpoint and embarcadero, the
5:07 pm
suspect vehicles, a black suv and a white sedan, blast through the intersection. . on the other side of that intersection, a group of four cyclists writing across the intersection after the first one crosses the street. the black suv races right through them. the last cyclists in the group can be seen dropping their bike and racing to help the injured cyclist, we now know to be 10-year-old girl under 16 year old girl. secondsater as the driver makes a turn, two backs can be seen flying in the middle of embarcadero, and people huddled around the median. minutes later, the dashcam captures a police car racing to the scene, followed by a fire truck. >> we were in the middle of a song, families around us, all of a sudden we started hearing pop, pop, pop. sounded like fireworks. lena: megan was performing at the entrance of pier 39 with her husband when the gunfire erupted and they dropped to the ground.
5:08 pm
>> in the moment, it seems like it just kept going and that it just stopped. and then suddenly pier 39 was just -- everybody had gone into the storefronts or doctor behind things or drop to the ground. it was just stillness. lena: the supervisor called sunday heart wrenching day for san francisco. >> this just adds to the sense that san francisco is a bit out of control. and it is, admittedly. lena: while police believe this is an isolated incident, the supervisor says public safety needs to be prioritized to help get things under control, which he hopes to get through an incoming ballot initiative next year that will focus on increasing the total number of police officers the next few years >> these are things that i think feed into the perception and the ability of people to believe that they can behave this way in our city. we have ignored our police department for the last five years where we are severely understaffed, severely, by independent analysis.
5:09 pm
this is not something in my mind that is debatable. lena: police say they are still looking for the people who were in that white sedan, and they also say that there are many other videos at their that could help them paint a better picture of what just what happened out here yesterday evening. if you have any videos of what happened here yesterday, you are asked to call the san francisco police to blame. in san francisco, lena howland, abc7 news. dion: that video truly incredible. we continue our team coverage of the shooting near pier 39, with some voicing concerns about police response times. more than 20 rounds were fired during yesterday's shootout. i.t. reporter stephanie sierra is digging into how long it took officers to get on the scene. >>. >> gunshot wound, not alert. [sirens wailing] stephanie: it was before 7 p.m.
5:10 pm
sunday when gunfire erupted from two cars recklessly resting along the embarcadero. >> location is beach street and stockton. stephanie: shots ring out from each vehicle at stockton and beach street near pier 39, all the little howard street along the embarcadero. . this bystander saw it happen in your pier 39. he felt the police response was too slow. >> it took them a while to get here. but they were there quickly. stephanie: the police chief says officers arrived on scene within four minutes, happily their response time. dash cam video sent to the i.t. confirms that timing. abc7 analysis on so far this year, the average response time for priority date calls which include life-threatening situations like active shooters, is around eight minutes to put that figure in perspective, public records show last year that average was a full minute over the target response time. >> this was a pretty significant series of crime scenes.
5:11 pm
stephanie: us that the response times may have varied because it takes about two minutes to get to each scene. >> whether they went to the point where it started or ended up here, that takes time. stephanie: analysis of fire scanner traffic shows medical and fire personnel were on scene within four minutes and 30 seconds of the first men one called. but it did vary depending on location. for example, medics were on scene within one minute responding to a pedestrian crash near pier 39. but records show it took 11 minutes for them to arrive to suv crash near howard. >> that is about right. medics arrived 13 minutes stephanie: david osgood lives in one of the high-rises along howard near where the crash happened. >> six people were hurt. i think 13 minutes is a bit long. it is almost a quarter of one hour. stephanie: fire and medics could not enter the scene last night until buddies had it secure. >>. >> i did call 9-1-1 and nobody answered.
5:12 pm
it raises the question of what would happen during the serious, catastrophic event where dozens or hundreds of people are hurt. stephanie: further itm, stephanie sierra, abc7 news. dan: and then in the east bay, a six-year-old b shot by a let critic gas station friday night. the shooting happened at a gas stationn east 12th street around 915 on friday. according to the san francisco chronicle, the yldas struck in the knee by a bullet while waitin car as his fatherd gas. he was taken t hospital and is in stable condition but it is not clear just how severe his injury is. police are still looking for the shooter. dion: coming up, celebrating juneteenth across the country, and here in the bay area. we will show you several of the events including one, honoring actor and activist dana glover.
