4:32 am
everyone. i'm andrew dymburt. happy tuesday. i'm rhiannon ally. we want to begin this morning with that urgent search in the north atlantic for a missing sub carrying tourists to view the wreckage of the titanic . that wreckage is more than two miles below the surface. the sub lost contact with its anchor ship sunday, about 900 miles from cape cod. time is of the essence because the crew, as of sunday, may have only had about 96 hours of oxygen left. a rescue effort could be a major challenge. here's abc's lionel moise. overnight officials continued the search for the missing submersible that lost contact on a journey to explore the titanic wreckage on the ocean floor. nearly 13,000ft below the surface. the fact is, you're looking for something the size of a minivan in the bottom of the north atlantic. so it's hard to say, but they certainly have a challenge ahead of them. five people were aboard the vessel operated by oceangate expeditions, including a british civilian and billionaire james harding. the company recently
4:33 am
began offering tourists the chance to travel with scientists to the wreckage for a price of about $250,000. this is a rare opportunity for you to explore titanic as an actual member of the expedition crew. a ship left newfoundland friday, bringing the submersible to begin that journey to the titanic wreckage sunday morning. but officials say an hour and a half into the dive, the ship lost contact with the submersible and alerted the coast guard. we're working very closely at this point to make sure that we're doing everything that we can do to locate the submersible and rescue those on board. it's unclear what went wrong. oceangate released a statement saying, we are deeply grateful for their urgent and extensive assistance we are receiving from multiple government agencies and deep sea companies as we seek to reestablish contact with the submersible, oceangate says. a crew of five has enough oxygen to survive for 96 hours. that
4:34 am
would be until approximately thursday, experts say if they're alive on the ocean floor, the crew would be asked to sleep as much as possible. slow down their breathing, remain as calm as possible, condition is on the ocean floor, are challenging to say the least. you are looking at pressure. that's 400 times what it is on the surface of the earth. so everything's just trying to crush whatever is down there to begin with. and that's nothing to say about all the hazards at the bottom. the submersible is supposed to be able to float to the surface. if there's an issue, there is a mechanism whereby you can release weight and this thing can float to the surface. so i'm just hoping that that works. another challenge, there's no gps. the submersible is guided from the ship above by using text messages and a rescue would be difficult even for the military. even the rescue submarines that we made for our war fighting submarines aren't designed to go that deep because
4:35 am
if one of our war fighting submarines were to go, that deep, there would be no survivors. the us and canadian coast guards have been coordinating with the search and flights will also resume this morning. now, another option discussed would be trying to pull it up with a claw attached to a ship. but one expert described that as trying to get a toy with a claw out of an arcade machine. rhiannon andrew . all right, lionel, thank you for that. the clock is ticking. pakistani business man and his son are also on board the sub. according to a family statement , more violent storms have spawned tornadoes along the gulf coast. at least 100 buildings were damaged or destroyed in moss point, mississippi, and eight people were briefly trapped in a local bank. farther east, several tornadoes were reported, including this one that moved through miramar beach, florida. and new video shows the damage from a tornado sunday in jasper county, mississippi, where at least one person was killed. meanwhile tropical storm bret is gaining strength and could threaten puerto rico as a hurricane this weekend. it's the earliest that
