>> building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc7news. ama: a neighborhood needing to heal. san francisco's mission district was does the site of a mass the shooting. nine people were hit and a suspect was arrested in this case. ama: no one was killed. those in the mission district came together to unite against violence.

j.r. stone shares the heroic actions made after the shots were fired. reporter: dozens of people in san francisco's mission district coming together here at 24th and mission. healing together and uniting just five blocks from where gunfire abrupt rock did two weeks ago in a mass shooting that left nine people injured. >> we had a young man who experienced a lot of trauma in his life with access to a firearm. engaging in social media conflict and then acted out. reporter: sent iago lerman helped organize this gathering. he is san francisco's supervisor's legislative aide and is referring to the suspect who was arrested last week. he lives a block away from where the shooting happened. >> we have not seen this kind of violence in many years. >> i was really sad. it was really sad. reporter: organizers describe this dancing as a form of native

american spiritual cleansing and purifying. ♪ they say many in the community stepped up in the moments after those nine people were shot. >> the mission community, whenever there's a fire, we run to it. our young people did that. when they saw that people were hurt, they banded together to provide first-aid and take care of each other. >> i'm happy that the youth on the scene helped the victims immediately before the first responders got there. they did stop the bleed, put melts around the wound. reporter: hope from those here for peace and healing. >> the government has failed to do anything to help people heal since covid. there's a big demand for mental health services. >> we are stronger than any act of violence. we are stronger than any pandemic. we are stronger than anything that may come. reporter: j.r. stone, abc7news.

ama: san francisco police release details about the suspect arrested in connection with sunday's high-speed shootout along the embarcadero. one suspect is facing five gun charges. no word on when he will appear in court. 23-year-old woman who was with him is not under arrest. police are looking for the people in the second car four people were injured in the melee but all are expected to be ok. if you want to look closer at the crime in san francisco or where you live, check out our abc7news neighborhood safety tracker. you will find it on the front page of abc7news.com. dan: the second day of president joe biden's bay area visit. he had plenty of people watching everywhere he went including as he left from a dinner event on the embarcadero. here he was leaving from the one market restaurant, turning onto mission street but it wasn't just campaigning today. abc7news reporter tim johns has been following his journey and

has the highlights. reporter: with a smile and joe biden wrapped up the second day of his bay area visit. the president leaving a fundraising dinner in downtown san francisco. dozens coming out to try to catch a glimpse. >> we thought he would invite us to the dinner. >> we are glad he's is here in san francisco. reporter: those waiting coming from both near. >> we've lived here for a while. it's crazy to see when he's around. reporter: and far. >> unexpected and really cool. i didn't think about it when i woke up this morning. >> he's got lots of irish relatives. reporter: earlier on tuesday, biden hosted a panel focused on artificial intelligence joined by experts from uc berkeley and stanford. the president highlighting the benefits and risks of the growing industry. >> i want to hear directly from the experts and the a's are some of the world's leading experts on this issue. reporter: he was flown across

the golden gate bridge for a stop in marin county. there he was in mark -- larkspur for another fundraiser at a private home that was attended by governor newsom. >> i'm seriously behind -- beside myself. i've loved jill biden my entire life. i am missing a canasta lesson to be here. i'm so excited. reporter: president biden is expected to stay here in the bay area until tomorrow. tim johns, abc7news. dan: florida governor and republican presidential candidate ron desantis was also in san francisco. he visited yesterday and put out a new campaign video today seemingly on a city sidewalk. >> when you look around, the city is not vibrant anymore. it has really collapsed because of leftist policies. these policies have caused people to flee the area. they don't prosecute criminals like they do in most parts of the country. dan: desantis went on to mention

things he says he saw during his visit, from drug use to boarded-up businesses. phil matier says san francisco could be at the forefront of national political debate going forward. >> governor gavin newsom and ron desantis have had an ongoing feud. governor newsom goes down to florida, cuts television ads there criticizing the state. now governor desantis has decided to stop by gavin newsom's hometown and send him a postcard with his own critique of san francisco. once again, putting us in the spotlight for possibly the presidential election. dan: robert f. kennedy, jr., running for president on the democratic side, was also in the city last week. he said if elected president, he plans to address mental illness, homelessness, and drug addition in the bay area. ama: let's turn it over to our weather because lowe's long days of sunlight will be hitting their max tomorrow. the summer solstice means it will be the longest day of the

year and the first day of summer. spencer christian knows all of that. he also knows our forecast and what we should expect. spencer: you know, it doesn't feel like spring yet. summer starts tomorrow so let's move on to take a look at what's happening right now as we lead into the beginning of summer tomorrow. right now, temperatures in the mid to upper 50's and low 60's. it's a mild late night. it will be mild overnight as well. tomorrow, expect high temperatures higher than they were today. 60 at the coast. 70 around the shoreline. near 80 in the warmest inland locations. it's not exactly summerlike but warmer than the warmth we've had so far. as you look ahead, second day of summer, temperatures will plummet on thursday. dropping down eight to 10 degrees below tomorrow's highs. they will bounce back a little bit more on friday and a little bit more saturday. mainly there's hope for the weekend. i will have the full forecast in just a few minutes. ama: thank you.

record-breaking heat impacting more than 37 million americans right now, from new mexico to louisiana. dan: excessive heat warnings and advisories in effect for much of texas. two cities hit their all-time high temperature records for any day of the year. in the atlantic, abnormally warm temperatures are causing an early start of the hurricane season. tropical storm brent is expected to make impact on st. lucia on thursday. now let's move to this story still happening as we speak. the frantic search for a missing submersible that will -- vessel that was taking trysts to see the wreckage of the dynamic. a canadian aircraft reported under water noises. the coast guard is looking into that. it hasn't located anything but it's a big lead. it's running the search out of it center in boston but it's racing against the clock now with passengers expected to run out of oxygen thursday morning. here's melissa don. reporter: an urgent

multinational search is underway for the five people aboard a submersible that is lost in the north atlantic ocean. what was supposed to be an eight to 10 hour round-trip journey to view the wreckage site of the titanic turning into days of search and rescue by the u.s. coast guard with support from canada, france, and the u.s. air force. >> all of record -- efforts are focused on finding the sub. reporter: an extensive search above and below the water. an area twice as large as the state of connecticut. planes dropping sonar buoy's into the ocean to listen for sounds from the sub. so far, there have been no signs. the capsule could be as far down as the titanic itself. the titan is the size of a van. officials fear the oxygen supply is running out. >> the craft has to be open from the outside. we are hoping they are on the top, bobbing around. reporter: onboard is the ocean gaetz ceo. since its launch, the titan has

made a dozen trips to the wreckage site with passengers paying up to $250,000. also among the missing, businessman -- and his son. remount titanic researcher --. and a british billionaire. in a 2018 lawsuit, a former employee raised concerns about the safety of the sub at extreme depths. the pressure at 13,000 feet is 100 time times that at sea level. he claims he raising concerns. abc news, los angeles. dan: two of the people on board the sub have a bay area connection. two are on the board of trustees with an institute in mountain view. it released a statement that says, we are holding out every hope for a successful rescue

mission and the safe return of our brother and all those on board. our hearts go out to everyone board, the entire family. ama: let's get into tonight's deep dive. we are looking at the fentanyl crisis and how it's affecting not just san francisco but the bay area. santa clara county saw a record number of fentanyl deaths last year. this year, there appeared to be a slow down and then something changed. data shows a total of 17 fentanyl related deaths through the end of april but then not number doubled to 41 in may. we spoke to the santa clara county district attorney's office tonight and we learned there are two particular groups of concern. >> it runs the gamut. nope -- no person or age group escapes fentanyl's grip. the group we are most concerned about our young adults and juveniles. those other groups that we've

seen as one of the high risk groups. ama: the district attorney's office is prioritizing prosecuting fentanyl traffickers and is pursuing murder charges. san francisco has the most fentanyl related deaths in the bay area with 346 this year alone. that's nine times what santa clara county has reported. a good morning america, antony blinken was quick to point a finger at who is to blame. >> the chemical precursors that go into fentanyl. they are manufactured in china, sent over to mexico, coming into the country and killing a lot of americans. ama: he has -- says china has agreed to work with the white house and exploring options to combat the flow of fentanyl. if you or someone you know is struggling with drug addiction, you can find a list of local resources on our website. dan: it's a cold favorite down in the south bay but a beloved

some inland east bay areas warm up to 80 degrees tomorrow. a good start for summer. let's talk about the summer solstice which occurs tomorrow morning. the sun's rays will be shining directly on the tropic of cancer which is the northernmost circle of latitude on earth. when it's directly over the traffic of cancer, that's the summer solstice. denoting the longest day of the year, in terms of daylight. tomorrow. that's pretty cool. here's a look at the forecast. summer sunshine tomorrow but look at what happens on thursday. temperatures plummet 10 degrees lower than the highs tomorrow. the second day of summer will feel more like early spring. friday and saturday, a few more degrees. into the weekend, saturday, sunday temperatures climb a couple degrees. this is pride weekend in san francisco. sunday, we have the pride parade.
