to this point. >> breaking news of contra costa county, traffic detours are in place after a deadly crash at camino diablo south of brentwood. three vehicles are involved, 11 victims. one of them has died. 10 people are injured. vasco road is closed in both directions as authorities conducted their investigation. drivers are told to expect significant traffic delays through the area. >> we will keep you posted on those stories throughout the course of the next hour. our other top story, making a safe space. workers for san francisco's transit agency hitting the streets for its first ever safe out day, spreading the word that they are taking concerns seriously. thank you for joining us, i'm larry beale. >> i'm liz kreutz. workers went to five of the most used transit lines making sure people know that safety is the number one priority, but that's not the only issue. >> remember the video earlier

this month? person after person not paying, highlighting the growing problem of very evaders. as abc 7 news reporter zach fuentes explains uni-has an answer for that. >> is one of the oldest publicly operated transit systems, one that many people depend on. but there are safety concerns. take a look at the sf pd data cited that shows a number of incidents. there was a much bigger number before the pandemic but the numbers have been going up since 2020. this year through april, there have been 188 incidents. they say they are aware that incidents are happening on vehicles and are working to step up safety. they launched a safety equity initiative focusing on gender-based and sexual harassment on public transportation for the first time. they took off on foot to spread the word. >> but were trying to do is making sure that everybody understands that we have different staff members throughout the system. they can reach out to them, they

are safe. >> a team who oversees it attached posters at bus stops and shared handouts. each letting people know in the feedback has been mixed. >> i don't think the people doing the violence are going to read the sign, so the people that are getting hurt are the ones reading the sign. >> they're maintaining that they hope the information will be helpful. >> we want to make sure our customers know and can identify the staff on the system available to support them in a system. >> improving safety was the focus but there are other concerns looming that they are trying to address including derivation. >> a third of revenue comes from fares so it's important that people pay. >> sf mta data shows that they have 23 active fair inspectors. 13 are on leave of absence and there are nine remaining positions. the numbers show that citations through may have gone up. >> if you are found in noncompliance you will be issued a citation. >> from safety to paying fares,

it's a few degrees cooler in locations near the coast and the bay. 60 in san francisco, 65 oakland. temperature readings at 85 in napa, fairfield, concord fairfield. seven these in the south bay, certainly milder on the first day of summer -- 70's in the south bay so it is milder. june gloom will make a return. the return of the marine layer, drizzle along the coastline and in some locations near the bay in the early morning hours. commuters may encounter some drizzle. clouds are going to hang around long enough to bring temperatures down into the june gloom level but it will not last long and i will have the details in my accu weather forecast a little bit later. >> thank you. president biden is back in washington this afternoon. he departed from sfo with little fanfare. wrapping his three-day visit -- visit to the bay area. he began his visit on monday

announcing more than 600 million dollars for climate adaption projects in palo alto. he hosted a panel on artificial intelligence and was the guest of honor at three events to raise money for his reelection. florida governor and republican candidate ron desantis was in san francisco. during his visit he stopped along a city street to record a campaign video criticizing the city. >> you look around the city is not vibrant anymore. it has really collapsed because of leftist policies and these policies have caused people to flee this area. they did not prosecute criminals like they do in most parts of the country. >> he mentioned things he saw during his visit from open-air drug use two boarded-up businesses. says progress is being made to address the open-air drug markets in the tenderloin. the joint enforcement team in place has seized more than 132 pounds of fentanyl which amounts

to 32 lethal doses of the drug. this is an increase of 100 60% over the same time last year and more than 640% seized year over year since 2021. >> were getting an update on the fentanyl crisis in santa clara county. the county saw a record number of fentanyl related debts. 160. this year there appeared to be a slow down then something changed. data shows a total of 17 deaths through the end of april and then the number more than doubled to 41 in may. abc 7 news reporter dustin dorsey is digging into the numbers to find out what's driving the trend. look for his report at 5:00. if you or somebody you know is struggling, you can find a list of resources on our website, abc 7 news.com/take action. >> the man accused of causing a home explosion in san francisco's outer sunset district return to court to

answer to a new charge. murder. darren price went before a judge and pled not guilty. abc 7 news reporter suzanne has the latest. >> 53-year-old darren price appeared in court, quiet and reserved. he was charged with murder, pleaded not guilty. he is accused of causing the explosion that destroyed this home on noriega street in february. previously he was charged with involuntary manslaughter and released on bail because the judge said he was not an immediate right to the community. now he is back in jail. after courtney heard from his attorney. >> we believe in his innocence. we believe he should be out of custody. there has been no evidence that he has violated any terms or conditions of release and i do not believe he poses a danger to the public. we are going to be asking for him to be released tomorrow. >> a month after the explosion you can see what is left of the outer sunset home on 20 2nd avenue.

nearby homes are being repaired. his 50-year-old wife was killed in the explosion. her caretaker was severely hurt. his two teenagers were not home at the time. prosecutors say the explosion was caused by an illegal hash oil operation. among the charges he faces, murder, manufacturing a controlled substance and elder abuse. he faces four counts of reckless burning and two counts of child endangerment. we talked to his neighbor jack noriega about the murder charge. his home was badly damaged during the blasted lever blocks away. he is not surprised by the charge that price faces. >> he killed his wife, heard a lot of innocent people on the block. my roommate and my dog walked right in front of that house 16 minutes before it exploded and rosa the mail mail on that block.

childhood until that moment, although i did not know it, i was always being prepared for that day. >> the daughter of a minister, she says her family and her faith also prepared her for the scrutiny she would face in the weeks after the attack. >> through those times, i never felt rattled. i never felt shaken. it was not easy, but i had that prayer covering over me and it had been with me all of my life. >> with the scrutiny came admiration, specifically from young women of color. >> they all tell me how proud they were to see someone that look like them, that talk like them, that had some shared experiences. i am proud to say that i was able to endure. i was successful at opening doors for others. and i am excited to see wha next chapter looks like here at uc berkeley pd.

across san francisco right now as we look out from sutro tower. 61 the city right now, oakland 65. 68 in mountain view, low 70's san jose palo alto. 50 nine half moon bay. it is bright and breezy with blue skies. 77 degrees right now and sent rosa. mid 70's in napa and livermore. nice first day of summer, temperature at 80 in concord. there are people at the beach in santa cruz. morning drizzle is welcome. june gloom returns increasing clouds but we can expect milder weather for the sf pride celebration. notice how the marine expands and deepens clouds. drizzle onshore, some will fall onshore. locations near the coast and the

bay may pick up areas of drizzle. by midday or mid afternoon, sunnier skies away from the coast and the bay. overnight lows will be in the low to mid 50's, relatively mild overnight. highs tomorrow near 60 at the coast but mid 60's around the bay shoreline. not even a warm-up, but a cool down from today's level and inland areas will not hit 80. will be looking at low 70's in the warm spots, looking ahead to friday, a couple degrees warmer. mid 70's in london on saturday with the weekend approaching, we will see highs beginning to reach into the mid to upper 70's inland. we are not likely to see 80 degrees for a while. accuweather seven-day forecast, the pride parade in san francisco on sunday should take less under some early morning clouds but mainly sunny skies later in the day. milder weather early next week. monday, 78 degrees inland to 80 on tuesday and finally low to mid 80's inland by next

subscribers attempts to cancel memberships. amazon has responded saying the claims are false. it insists that customers can easily sign up or cancel their memberships. the federal reserve says another interest rate hike is likely. the agency chair told the house finance services committee that the fed remains very far from its target inflation rate of 2%. while inflation has fallen since the covid-19 pandemic, the rate remains at more than 4%. the fed has raised interest rates 10 times since march of last year. irs is doing better this year when it comes to processing tax returns. a report out today shows the agency's tax return backlog is down a whopping 80% from last year. the report found the irs customer service phone line is making improvements. now answering 35% of calls, that

does not sound great. before it was only 11% good though slowdown is impacting identity theft cases which take up to 15 months to resolve. many delays are attributed to the covid-19 pandemic and the labor shortage. i think the whole reason that you have this length of time fixing identity theft is that they took a lot of those workers and move them over to get those tax forms done. >> in baseball if you get a hit 35% of time you're in the hall of fame. there you go, progress. >> 35% and they are bragging. >> 43 acres of land in the open hills are now back in the hands of indigenous owners. the land trust is a nonprofit that facilitates land to indigenous people of their partnering with movement generation to care for the property. >> we have partners across the country who are doing the same type of repatriation, taking

future of meat production in the united states. some at uc berkeley who study this say it still has a ways to go before it replaces farms and slaughterhouses. >> the impact compared to the capital and the cost and the price this will have, everything for us, we do not see how this is going to have an impact. >> professor ricardo studies alternative meat and says labs like upside foods are expensive to run and do not produce as much meat as a farm. >> except for wine and is quite expensive. especially in this case, you are talking of cells of animals that you have to be free from contamination. >> there is optimism that this could be the future if the production challenges are met. ryan curry, abc 7 news. >> developing news, the search for the missing tourist submarine.

the u.s. coast guard heard underwater noises again today but has not been able to locate the submersible with five people on board. time is literally running out with the vessel expected to be out of oxygen tomorrow morning. the noises came from the area where the search is focused and are described by some as banging sounds. >> with respect to the noises specifically, we do not know what they are to be frank. the p3 detected noises, that's why they're doing what they're doing, that's why they put sonar buoy's in the water. what i can tell you is were searching the area where the noises were detected. >> that sub called the titan was taking tourists to see the wreckage of the titanic when it vanished. the search is focused on an area 900 miles east of cape cod. three of the passengers have bay area ties. the pilot got his masters degree from uc berkeley. one is on the board of mountain view and brought his son on a trip. >> getting a little bit more

sunday. talk to me a little bit about the stakes of 2023 pride. as people -- let me remind people in case they don't know, we have about 500 pieces of law, bills, going through state legislatures all across the country according to the aclu, which target the lgbtq+ community. that is something that we have not faced in recent years and i think all of us as part of the community are feeling the effects of that this year. >> every morning i wake up and that's one of the first things i see is another horrible bill. pressuring especially the trans community but the entire community. this year, san francisco pride will draw a line on market street and you can come join us and say you're for human rights for all lgbtq people. you're either with us or you're against us because there is no moderate position when it comes to human rights for our
