after she got into her boyfriend's suv and started driving down geneva street, everything changed. >> i heard gunshots. i knew it was near me. i knew that it was close by and i started panicking and i saw his hand with the gun sticking out of the window and firing. dion: when he looked down and realized she had been shot in the shin. winnie says she sfpd and first responders for their quick actions and is now giving away these first responder dog toys to our community as a way to say thanks. >> it could have been so much worse, so looking back, it happened the best way it could. i feel very lucky. dion: winnie is recovering and able to walk. so far no arrests have been made and sfpd asks anyone with information to come forward.

windows of a walgreens store in san francisco boarded up tonight. someone smashed them all. this is the walgreens at geary and taylor. walgreens tells abc 7 the store is closed temporarily and it is unknown when it will reopen. happening tomorrow proposal to help improve bay area public transportation. state senator scott weiner of san francisco will hold a press conference at the capitol to announce a bill that would create more funding. that money would go towards reducing service cuts, providing cleanliness and reliability. proposal comes after governor newsom awarded more than $690 -- $690 million to various projects meant to cut pollution across the state. today's pride parade caused some traffic delays in san francisco. the story behind detoured dilemmas for two robo taxis and why this situation could be a roadblock for the future of autonomous cars.

tracked traveling through several counties. san francisco police located the vehicle with legos and a handgun inside several hours later. investigators say the trio stole $3500 worth of legos. nearly 400 pounds of fireworks were turned in today during san mateo county's first ever firework buyback program. the sheriff's office held the event in redwood city, offering people up to $75 based on the weight of those fireworks. deputies say they collected illegal and potentially deadly pyrotechnics including military grade smoke grenades, aerial rockets, and mortar style fireworks. >> it was 9:45, and there were already people waiting in line. the sheriff's office wants people to enjoy the fourth of july. we just ask the community does that responsibly and safely. dion: if you are not make it -- able to make it today, you can still contact bashar's office to find a place to dispose of those

dion: some couples in north carolina who thought they divorced may technically still be together. lawyers say an issue with language in the online filing system is to blame. some of the language was reportedly insufficient for a valid divorce decree. the city attempted to send some of those affected letters. one woman says the process to make things official again has not been an easy one. >> i definitely thought, am i not actually divorced? the letter did say it was through no fault of my own, which i guess was reassuring in a way, but also not really. dion: a lawyer representing the people affected says this could be a problem when it comes to filing taxes, applying for benefits, home loans, buying, and selling property as well. the giants get stuck in some traffic on the bases while we go

if you want to know how much precious runoff is trickling into our groundwater supply from the record snowpack in the sierra, you can start with a long pole and a set of snowshoes, but while the official snow surveys are vital for planning water use, they cannot impact how much of that snowpack is making its way underground. enter two pairs of satellites known as race and grace follow on, which work as a tag team according to earth scientist jt rigor of nash's jet propulsion laboratory in pasadena. >> satellites usually satellite on them, and as the satellite flies, it is pointing down at the earth. the grace satellites are completely different. there is no instrument on them. the satellites themselves are the instruments. spencer: the satellites work by chasing each other around the earth. when an increase in surface gravity pulls on one satellites, the other satellite tech that by

measuring the changes in distance between them. one of the variables for surface gravity on earth, water. >> water is the only thing that can move fast enough and is heavy enough to cause changes in gravity. spencer: that includes deep underground flows slowly percolating through the ground and porous rock formations of the sierra. with enough high-powered analysis, researchers say the satellites are able to detect how much runoff is flowing into the vital groundwater of california's central valley. recent studies from the total is equal to about 10% of all the water that reaches the area, including rivers and rainfall. nasa researchers believe understanding those margins can be critical in the face of climate change. >> that relatively small change when you are talking about infinitesimal tractions of water available for humans, those changes in climate can have big impacts on that small amount of water available for human beings. spencer: those changes are

already here. a recent nasa study found levels of groundwater fluctuate more significantly between wet and dry years than previously known, including the potential impact of our record snowpack in california. >> probably the next couple of months, we are going to see how much ends up in the ground. spencer: for now, the chase in space is on, generating critical data about the water flowing here on earth. even if there is a robust flow into the central valley, it could take years to replenish the aqueduct. meanwhile, researchers estimate the central valley lost 2 million to 8 million feet of water the last decade and a half. dion: hard to wrap your head around those numbers. thank you. an event today in the bay area celebrated excellence in design and engineering. up next, some of the rare
