this weekend's rebellion in just a moment. >> but we want to begin with the tornadoes hitting the midwest, turning deadly overnight. about three miles of damage reported from one storm. >> and in the south, nearly a half a million power outages have been reported. >> you run for the bathroom this morning. >> multiple videos show a tornado slamming into this housing development in greenwood, indiana. just south of indianapolis. the powerful twister tearing apart the building. sending debris hundreds of feet into the air. the sheriff says several neighborhoods are damaged or destroyed. seven miles away in the town of bargersville, authorities say at least 75 homes are damaged after a tornado hit that area as well. >> altogether, we're probably looking at roughly three miles right now of damage. >> severe weather also hitting parts of arkansas, downing trees and power lines. a customer at a walmart near little rock shared this video showing large hail

falling in the store. and the self-checkout aisle after she says chunks of ice crashed through the skylight above. the other big weather story, the extreme heat, at least nine states from arizona to mississippi and tennessee are under heat alerts today where the feels like temperature could hit 120 degrees. in texas, a 14 year old died after going on a hike at big bend national park in 119 degree heat. police say his stepfather was later killed in a car crash trying to get help for him. >> the road crew is currently plowing through underneath the old said slab. >> a far different scene at yosemite national park in california. some roads remain closed due to too much snow left over from the historic winter storms. visitors could face hours long waits to enter the park. back in indiana, at least one death has been reported. a man killed in this house in martin county. we'll check your forecast in just a few minutes. >> now to russia and that

shocking revolt this weekend by mercenaries who are crucial for the russian war effort in ukraine. the revolt is now raising serious questions about vladimir putin's grip on power. so what happens next? abc's justin finch is here now with more. justin, where does putin stand now? >> andrew, good morning. that remains to be seen. the state department says the militia groups unimpeded march towards moscow shows the walls around putin may finally be cracking. this morning, several questions remain in the wake of a short lived rebellion against the kremlin, which has the white house questioning the strength of president vladimir putin's regime. >> 16 months ago, putin was on the doorstep of kyiv in ukraine , looking to take the city in a matter of days. a race to the country from the map now. now he's had to defend moscow. >> on friday, yevgeny prigozhin , the leader of the wagner mercenary group, a key asset for russia on the front lines in parts of ukraine, announced a revolt against russian military leaders. prigozhin and his

troops took control of two russian military hubs in the south, russian media reported the downing of multiple helicopters and a military communications plane. pagosa's troops cheered by many russians. but just 120 miles from moscow. so they turned back after a mysterious deal was reached. according to the kremlin, the deal calls for prigozhin to leave russia for neighboring belarus. but this morning, prigozhin himself has not confirmed the deal and his whereabouts remain unknown. and it's unclear whether any of prigozhin's estimated 25,000 troops will join him in exile. >> it is too soon to tell exactly where they go and when they get there, but certainly we have all sorts of new questions that putin is going to have to address in the weeks and months ahead. >> according to the washington post, us intelligence was aware prigozhin happened planning armed action against the kremlin

since mid-june. former cia director david petraeus had this warning for prigozhin, referencing a number of prominent russians who have died in unclear circumstances in the past, prigozhin kept his life but lost his wagner group and he should be very careful around open windows in his new surroundings in belarus, where he's going. ukraine hopes to capitalize on the chaos. wagner troops have played a crucial role in the war, taking part in some of the longest battles in eastern ukraine. experts fear this weekend's revolt could make putin more desperate. ukraine's intelligence chief says russia has completed preparations to potentially blow up the zaporozhye nuclear plant, saying the situation has never been so serious. and meanwhile, oil prices rose overnight after the revolt sparked concerns about political instability. pretty andrew justin, thank you for

that update. >> we turn now to the latest in the investigation into last week's sub implosion in the north atlantic, which killed all five people on board. >> investigators will review voice recordings and other data from the sub's mothership, the polar prince, which returned to canada over the weekend. the coast guard is leading that investigation and we have an ongoing salvage operation. >> and we are also currently conducting interviews in the port of saint johns with crew members from the polar prince. the coast guard will publish its findings in a public report, including safety recommendations regarding submersible tls. >> one expert says the search and rescue mission could cost around $1.5 million. us and one of the five crew crew members killed was stockton rush. the ceo of the company that operated that sub. abc news has obtained emails to rush from carl stanley , who went on a dive in the bahamas back in 2019. now after that dive, he warned rush of cracking sounds coming from the doomed sub.

weapons. love it. love it. >> you're going to get shot. soothing you're going to work >> all right. >> police say perez then threw a candle holder at one officer. according to police, perez ultimately smashed her window with her hammer and. police opened fire, missing perez, who they say then came to the door, hammer in hand, back up. finally perez shot through the door. the officers now charged with murder are sergeant alfred flores. nathan villalobos and eliezer alejandro. they had 20 years of combined experience. >> s they placed themselves in a situation where they used deadly force, which was not reasonable given all the circumstances. perez family now planning to sue . >> she didn't deserve this. and those officers took my life will never be the same person again.

>> there needs to be systemic changes at the police department or this is going to continue to happen. the officers have been released on bond. >> they are suspended without pay pending the investigation. >> on a small plane crash along the north carolina coast is under faa investigation. that plane came down on a house in southport. that's near cape fear and it burst into flames. and now the pilot escaped. three people in the house also got out safely. >> time now for a look at your monday weather. good >> we're looking at a high risk for severe weather for your monday from places like philadelphia right through richmond, virginia, and in towards raleigh along the i-95 corridor. this could come after rounds of thunderstorms, the morning notice, the wet weather through pennsylvan, hania and virginia. and then we talk about the afternoon, the cold front instigating those thunderstorms. that could be strong, severe with large hail, damaging winds and even isolated tornadoes as the heat, that's a continuing problem through texas, louisiana

at the airport in montgomery, alabama, died after being pulled into a plane's engine. the american airlines subsidiary involved was recently fined after investigators found a lack of communication and effective training. >> well, air travel is expected to set records this summer. and now a new concern about delays and cancellations because of a technical upgrade that the airlines need to make. and last night, another issue with air traffic control. here's abc's derrick dennis. >> new concerns for air travelers heading into the height of the summer travel season. >> the faa last night forced to issue a temporary ground stop for all planes in and out of washington, d.c. area airports because of equipment problems at an air traffic control facility . the ground stop lifted after a few hours, but it comes just days after a government audit found critical us air traffic controller facility issues are facing serious staffing shortages and the faa quote, lacks a plan to address them. meanwhile, transportation secretary pete buttigieg warns there may be more headaches to

come due to a looming deadline for 5g wireless technology. on planes. >> the deadline is july first for a lot of the changeover that need to be done between the faa and the cellular companies and the airlines. there is mostly a feeling that they've got it under control. but by the same token, there are some people that are still concerned. >> the issue is planes have a device called a radio altimeter telling them how far they are from the ground as they come in for a landing turns out the frequencies used by 5g are similar. experts worry there could be confusion, especially when a plane is trying to land in bad weather. what happens on july 1st is that all the aircraft that needed filters put in their antenna lines for the radar, radio altimeter should be in compliance. >> otherwise they're going to have some restriction in terms of how low they can fly on approaches is delta says about 190 of its planes won't be equipped in time. >> united says its united express planes could be affected. jet blue reportedly won't have upgrades in place until october and expect some
