overnight a deadly trail of destruction left behind in indiana, after multiple twisters touched down in the state. a powerful tornado decimating this home, killing the man who was inside. his wife, who was in there with him, air lifted to the hospital with serious injuries. now, without her husband, or her home. here you can see what was once the kitchen. chair, a door, all demolished. less than 100 miles away another tornado tearing through the city of greenwood. watch as it intensifies within second, ripping roofs off buildings. powerful winds sending pieces of what's left flying in the air. multiple videos capturing the twister ripping apart this housing development. you can see close up how violently it shreds through the group of homes, debris raining down on parts of the city.

at least 75 homes in the county are moderately to severely damaged. >> altogether we're probably look at roughly three miles of damage. >> reporter: indiana not the only state to get hit. severe storms knocking out power to nearly half million customers in the south and claiming another victim in atlanta, georgia when a tree fell on a father who was taking a walk. now those dangerous storms are heading east. crews tell us that they've been working around the clock to clear debris from the roads. officials say some areas could be without power up to five days. whit? >> another challenge this morning. thank you. stunning revolt over the weekend by russian mercenaries who are a key part of the russian war effort in ukraine. the incident raising new questions about putin's hold on power. our chief foreign correspondent ian pannell checking the latest for us from ukraine. ian, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, whit.

what an extraordinary series of events. just three days ago putin looked unassailable with an iron grip on power. this morning he looks vulnerable. fighting to keep russia's foot hold in ukraine and now having to deal with a major crisis at home. putin in crisis after an armed mutiny and march on moscow. a weekend of turmoil not seen in decades has left the leader looking humiliated. it started friday evening 10:15 p.m. a former putin ally who leads the wagner private military company, has fought for russia around the world and most recently in ukraine suddenly announced his troops are crossing the border back into russia and to march against military leaders. 7:30 a.m. saturday, he said his fighters have taken key military headquarters and an air feel meeting little resistance, his men marched north. an angry vladamir putin addressing the nation saying

he's being stabbed in the back warning of civil war. around noon, fighting reported. by 3:30 p.m. a cone of wagner fighters was located 220 miles from moscow. 8:29 p.m. the rebels just around 130 miles from moscow where defenses are being done when there's suddenly a halt. saying he is turning back to avoid blood shed even though a number of died along the way. they all get an amnesty and are cheered as they withdraw. he was reportedly able to move to belarus. u.s. secretary of state antony blinken saying he doesn't believe we've seen the final chapter. >> it's still a moving picture and i doubt we've seen the last act. i think we can say this much. first, we've seen some very serious cracks emerge. >> reporter: overnight, russia' beleaguered defense minister making his first public

appearance, touring battlefields in occupied ukraine. although the official russian video doesn't reveal where he actually is. on the ground, the ukrainians claiming to make some advances in their counter offensive in the south, and seen here in the east amid intense fighting. a senior aide to zelenskyy telling me he believes the chaos in russia will hinder its war efforts. >> given what we've seen happen in russia, do you believe we are now at the beginning of the end of the war in ukraine? >> reporter: he says, without a doubt, it's the beginning of the end. and president zelenskyy, now warning russia may be planning a potentially life threatening attack on europe's largest nuclear plant with orders for all military personnel to under go training to deal with a nuclear disaster. so many questions this morning. how damaged is putin? and what does this mean for the war in ukraine? where's prighozin and what's he

planning? he hasn't been seen since saturday. the russian newspaper reporting the mutiny charges against him are not closed. i think we are unlikely to have heard the last from prighozin and for putin, unlikely to have seen the end of this crisis. linsey? >> such a precarious time. for more on how the biden administration is responding let's go to mary bruce. good morning, mary. >> reporter: yeah. good morning, linsey. the president has been busy working the phones, reaching out to allied leaders speaking with ukrainian president zelenskyy. biden spent the weekend huddling with his national security adviser, receiving constant updates. the administration is still trying to figure out what happened here? what are the terms that led prighozin to call off his march on moscow? there's no question the white house feels this has left putin weakened and vulnerable and ukraine should try and take advantage of it. you heard secretary of state blinken saying it shows cracks in putin's power. the white house is now doubling down on its resolve to help

ukraine in this fight. there are very real concerns about what comes next here. whether putin could take increasingly drastic measures to try and keep his grip on power. michael? >> thank you, mary. joining us now is pentagon official steve daniel. thank you for joining us. president zelenskyy sounded the alarm by russia taking steps to potentially sabotage a nuclear facility in ukraine. could russia do that? >> they could. they have the means. they may not have the motive. they have the engineering capability. they have held this power plant for a long time. what they may be doing is wiring to plant to create a nuclear incident. it would be something putin would keep in his pocket if there was some sort of catastrophic ukrainian break through on the front lines, perhaps he could blow up this power plant. but interestingly, if you look at prevailing winds, if the russians did that, most of the year they blow either towards the east or towards the south. so that fallout would

theoretically come right back on to russian troops and potentially crimea. >> secretary of state blinken said on this week that real cracks are emerging in russia's leadership. is putin's power at risk? >> it certainly is. for the first time in 24 years. but remember, sometimes cracks in foundations of buildings, they can cause catastrophic immediate effect or can go on for years or maybe never. we need to see how this plays out. i think that every hour that we don't see putin will be adding to that inkrieg. it's important to hear what this was and what it wasn't. it was not a coup attempt. it was not an insurrection. this was a mercenary army mutiny. prighozin felt the walls closing in around them. he hatched a plan to save himself and his men. it was brilliant. he walked into the military head quarters in the south, put his feet up on the desk and said, i control this place. sent an armored column up to the

north to pressure putin. called putin with the phones recording the whole thing, controlling social media to putin couldn't control the narrative. he said, let's negotiate. putin was unable to call his bluff and totally collapsed. it was totally humiliating for putin. and prighozin pulled it all off brilliantly. >> definitely has the world talking. steve, thank you so much. linsey? now to the environmental emergency after a train wreck in montana. molten sulphur and asphalt spilling into the yellowstone river after a bridge collapsed there. our chief national correspondent matt gutman is on the scene for us. good morning, matt. >> reporter: good morning, linsey. officials worked overnight to remove the most hazardous of the materials from that train. a flammable and toxic substance, called sodium hydrosulfide. rail officials say that early saturday morning a train was going over the bridge, over the yellowstone river when a bridge collapsed.

ten rail cars derailing. seven of them tumbling into the river. several of those dumping that sulphur and asphalt into the river. this is considered one of the most pristine in the lower 48. the latest rail derailment in the u.s. now, the rail company said so far no environmental impact has been detected but towns downstream from here, including billings, the biggest city in montana, have stopped drawing possibly contaminated water from the river. also the rail company saying it's investigating pools of tar that have been spotted on the beaches here. whit? >> definitely something to watch closely in the coming days, matt. thank you. turning to the three san antonio police officers facing murder charges after killing a whom allegedly having a mental health crisis in her own apartment. demarco morgan has details. demarco, good morning. >> reporter: the incident happened on the city's southwest side. now three officers are facing jail time.

[ gun fire ] >> reporter: this morning three san antonio police officers, sergeant alfred flores, are out on bond after being charged with murder for shooting and killing a distressed woman in her home. the agonizing or deal unfolding on recently released body cam footage when officers responded to a call that 46-year-old melissa perez had cut wires to a fire alarm system at her apartment complex. >> hey. lady. get over here. >> reporter: officers seen chasing perez as she runs back into her apartment after authorities arrived on the scene. >> you're going to get shot. >> you don't have a warrant. >> reporter: they say that's when perez threw a candle stick and grabbed a hammer. >> watch out!

[ gun fire ] one officer opening fire and when perez appears to move towards the door all three fire. authorities say the victim was suffering from a mental health crisis. >> they placed themselves in a situation where they used deadly force which was not reasonable given all the circumstances. >> there needs to be systemic changes at the police department or this is going to continue to happen. >> she didn't deserve it. those officers took my life. i will never be the same person again. >> reporter: now all three officers have been suspended without pay while this plays out. melissa perez's family said along with charges, that isn't enough. they tell us that they plan to sue under law that allows to sue for alleged civil rights violation. michael? >> thank you very much, demarco. we're going to turn now to the travel alert. just ahead of the holiday weekend, a warning about

potential airline delays and cancellations if planes aren't updated for 5g technology. janai norman joins us with more. good morning, janai. >> reporter: good morning to you. this has been a long time coming. we've been reporting about that 5g technology. you see it advertised on tv, to make your phone and internet run faster. the concern those signals could affect airplanes trying to land in bad weather. this morning with the fourth of july just days away, millions making plans to hit the skies for the holiday weekend. but transportation officials are warning airline passengers of possible delays and cancellations. the department of transportation sounding the alarm about airlines missing that crucial deadline to retrofit planes for 5g technology. planes have a device called a radio altimeter telling them how far they are from the ground. it's used when planes are about to land. experts worry the devices could confuse the frequencies and fail

when a plane is trying to land in bad weather. >> the concern is that there's the possibility of a bleedover close enough with this new 5g service that it could cause the radar altimeters to malfunction. >> reporter: delta reporting 900 -- 190 planes of 900 are not yet equipped. the company saying if a flight is impacted by inclimate weather on an aircraft that does not have the updated radio altimeter, existing processes will inform them of the weather delay or cancellation and present options to rebook, etc, just as we do today. >> it may be that while they can still operate in and out with no problem, if visibility goes down before they have these fixes, they're going to be restricted. >> reporter: not only could this impact some domestic flights but also has the potential to impact a considerable number of flights from international carriers that haven't retrofit their fleet. there's also been concerned about globe supply chain. delay is impacting some of those

patti labelle joins us live. that's all coming up. >> looking forward to that. now we have a closer look at the man behind the revolt of russian mercenaries over the weekend. the leader backed down after 24 hours but not before putin's leadership was seriously challenged. martha raddatz has more. good morning, martha. >> reporter: good morning, michael. the man has not been seen in pub pub lib since his attempted mutiny, but the actions he took have rattled vladamir putin like nothing else. this morning perghozin agreeing to live in exile after he launched his short lived march towards moscow. >> i think he knew that if he continued on towards moscow, that that would lead to an incredibly horrific and bloody battle that he would not likely win.

>> reporter: prigozhin's action are a stark reversal in the close relationship between prigozhin and putin that began unexpectedly decades before. after reportedly serving years in prison for robbery, prigozhin began selling hot dogs in st. petersburg growing the small stand into a thriving catering business eventually learning lucrative government contracts to cater kremlin events earning him the nickname putin's chef. >> he was someone who served putin many times at restaurants that prigozhin owned in st. petersburg. prigozhin got richer and richer and richer thanks to his relationship with putin. >> reporter: but prigozhin was not just seeking wealth. he wanted power. in 2014 financing the private mercenary force the wagner group which was deployed to war zones around the world. its soldiers known for

brutality, accused of torture, rape and mass killings in multiple countries. >> this mercenary group again was a group that the russian government used to provide deniability. this group did not obey international law. >> reporter: laws far beyond just those applying to the battlefield. the russian is wanted for the fbi for interfering online during the 2016 u.s. presidential election. while the wagner group has largely operated in the shadows, that all changed with russia's invasion of ukraine. the private military force quickly becoming front line fighters, prigozhin is believed to have recruited tens of thousands of convicts from russia's prisons to join the fight. but as the war in ukraine dragged on, prigozhin's patience wore thin, taking

particular aim at the defense minister, blaming him for much of russia's failures in the war, even accusing russia's top military leaders of ordering attacks on his troops. the russian defense ministry posted a video of the defense minister seemingly in defiance of prigozhin's criticism but the video was taped before prigozhin's march towards moscow. guys? >> such tumultuous times. all right, martha. thank you. now to the international investigation into the titan submersible disaster. officials are trying to find out what led to the catastrophic failure of the under water craft that ultimately killed five people. will reeve joins us now with more. good morning, will. >> reporter: good morning, linsey. the u.s. coast guard formed an investigation time. they boarded the mother ship in search of what went wrong. the wife and mother of two of the titan's passengers is speaking out. this morning christine dawood, the wife and mother of two

people on board is speaking. >> the sentence, sentence i never want to hear again. >> reporter: dawood recalling her son suleman was excited to take her spot on the sub and couldn't wait to break a world record. >> he said i will do it 3,000 meters below sea at the titanic. he was so excited about this. >> reporter: this as the international investigation as to what went wrong on the submersible titan intensifies. the coast guard announcing the priority is collecting the debris and starting interviews. these new images reveal a robot used in the difficult operation that first found that debris field 1600 feet on the sea floor over two miles below the surface. submersible expert carl stanley said after he went on an experimental dive in the bahamas

in 2019 in the titan sub he exchanged e-mails with stockton rush with serious concerns. >> i had very serious concerns. not only that the hull was compromised and getting worse, but that his entire system was not dialled in enough to the point where he should be offering trips to the public. >> reporter: in one e-mail, stanley saying cracking noises sounded like a flaw/defect in one area being acted on by the tremendous pressures and being crushed/damaged. in another he wrote to rush, i think that hull has a defect near that phalange. will it fail catastrophicically it will only get worse. the only question in my mind is will it fail or not? >> there should never be a risk of hull failure. i did everything i could. i pushed and pushed. >> reporter: the lead investigator for the coast guard

marine board said, quote, the board will first and primarily work to determine cause of this marine casualty and the five associated deaths. it can make recommendations to the proper authorities to pursue civil or criminal sanctions as necessary, guys. >> warning signs are just striking. thank you. turning to the popular drugs being used for diabetes and weight loss. ozempic and wegovy are taken by injection. but that may be about to change. eriel reshef is here with more. >> this is good news for anyone who doesn't like or tolerate needles. the study found people taking oral semaglutide had significantly greater weight loss over a nearly 16 month span compared to those taking a placebo pill. 667 adults, none of whom had type ii diabetes across nine different countries took the medication rebelsus. study found reduction in their

>> reporter: the prince's commitment to this cause instilled in him by his late mother, princess diana, who herself championed it. now this is a cause so close to his heart, prince william even has time to build social housing on land on the duchess of cornwall's estate. guys? >> and, switching gears for a moment. sarah ferguson duchess of york recently said she was diagnosed with breast cancer. what's the latest on her condition? >> reporter: we know the duchess of york is back at home in windsor recovering from her operation. according to her spokes person, she is surrounded by her family. speaking candidly, she had a single masectomy. she was diagnosed with an early form of breast cancer during a routine mammogram screening recently. she is otherwise symptom free. she is receiving medical treatments. the doctors have told her the prognosis is good.

>> all right. thanks, whit. now to our gma cover story. a new analysis of medical data from around the world finds 1.3 billion people will be living with diabetes by 2050 and 50% of the increase could be attributed to obesity. this comes with positive news about the new drugs linked to both diabetes and weight loss. dr. jen ashton is here to break et it down. let's start with the alarming numbers about diabetes. >> the world health organization putting this on people's radar. we're talking about type ii. this is by far and away the more common form of diabetes. they're finding this is 50% largely due to obesity, these forecasts, possibly a big player in this is from diet. the consumption of ultraprocessed high calorie foods. when you talk about the bad news of these increasing type ii

diabetes rates, the good news is type ii diabetes is largely reversible and preventible. >> we've been talking about how many of the medications for diabetes also work for people with obesity. tell us about the new report about monjouro. >> they are the new kid on the block. it works on a couple different mechanisms but this glp-1. this study had almost 1,000 overweight adults with type ii diabetes, 60% to 65% lost more than 10% of body weight. they also saw some improvement in their bad cholesterol, their blood pressure and glucose control. remember, when you talk about making a dent in health outcomes and risks, 5% of excess body weight or your starting body weight is really all that's needed. this met that end point. >> we all know people with diabetes who are used to giving themselves injection. you are telling me there's a pill that's been out since 2019. what do we need to know about
