nfo on their well-being. we will dig into these results. also, bad blood for swifties. the eras tour comes to levi's stadium one month from today and fans looking for last-minute tickets, beware. a bbb spokesperson will join us to discuss how to spot a ticket scam. there are lots of them out there. californians may be happy here but may want to leave anyway. the new california community poll shows 70% of respondent expressed -- respondents express high levels of happiness with living in california but at the same time 4 in 10 are considering packing up and leaving. our population for three consecutive years has declined. joining me as the ceo of hispanis, organized for political equality or hope. one of the partner organizations behind this poll.
3:02 pm
thanks for joining us. >> thank you for the opportunity. kristen: the poll is done jointly i understand your survey looks at public opinion among california residents with an oversampling of communities of color. what exactly does that mean? >> that means that we look at the general population. so for example, if the population of latinos is 37% of the population in california which is roughly where the adult population is now, we oversample. 37% of the people polled it is larger than that, that make up that 1300. there's an oversampling of african-american, aapi, and latinos to make sure it is more consistent with a population we represent. kristen: most polls actually
3:03 pm
don't oversample, people that question will be of that particular group. why is oversampling needed to get the actual results you are trying to get out of? >> a couple reasons we felt it was important to oversample is, one, when you have a growing population that is multiethnic and multiracial, that really does provide a better understanding of how those communities are responding to the policies california's putting forward, in how we are thriving or not driving in this environment. nesu-- ensuring that and a good way to do that is oversampling. kristen: you've done six polls since the year 2020. what was the overarching key narrative that emerged? >> in this latest poll,
3:04 pm
highlight is 70% of californians across the board, regardless of racial or ethnic identity, are very happy living here in california. they still -- we have common values, so common value of cherishing diversity, looking for opportunities and feeling the state is still providing opportunities for all of us. then the third one that i found was great that we all agree with is the opportunities education can provide for us. there a real investment in our education infrastructure. we are not quite happy with it yet. but we see the opportunities there. when you have an alignment of values when it comes to diversity, education, opportunity, it aligns with people saying they are generally happy to be living in this day. it really does provide a for moving forward with a foundation to be successful.
3:05 pm
kristen: but here's where that dichotomy seems to be. 70% say they are happy. 40% are considering leaving. how do you explain that? >> it is explained by one the economy. we absolutely have to pay attention to how californians are feeling about their economic well-being. what this poll tells us is, they are concerned about housing, health care costs, and the affordability of education. so we have to really utilize this as a snapshot in time to be super aggressive and how we are tackling the economic realities that all of us are feeling kristen: is the level of satisfaction or dissatisfaction tied to one's financial security? >> it is.
3:06 pm
we've known this because one of the key questions that we asked is, are you making ends meet at the end of the month? and they say they are not. so we know that there is economic stressors. we need to confront these. we need to ensure that we have affordable housing. that are health care is affordable. and that we have a trajectory for opportunity. kristen: what about communities of color, or women? there are things that jumped out at you in terms of how those groups responded. what they were most satisfied with. >> african-american women and latinos reported the highest level of discrimination in the workplace. that really does align as well with the pay equity cap here in california. latinos have the largest pay equity gap than any other place in this nation. there are groups like latinos and african-american women facing this termination and
3:07 pm
log opportunity in the workplace. there are strategies of how to address that. one of the big takeaways is, everything that has to do with the economy, with discrimination, there's ways to address this. we've done this before in california. we've had the type boom that went bust. we've had the housing boom that went bust. we have always resurfaced and been more resilient. this is one of those opportunities to really focus on, how are we investing in women, in micro businesses, in our education systems, to ensure a way through this economic stress. kristen: those are the things that your group, hope, focuses on. . i also want to ask you. as you look at these numbers, and they changed much over the past few years -- i also want to ask you, as you look at these numbers, have they changed much over the
3:08 pm
past few years? >> what has changed is the economic stressors. we have asked these questions before. they have increased in some places by 10% or more. this is a clear call action a time to concentrate on our economy and economic opportunities is now. people are feeling the stressors even more so than they were just a year ago. kristen: why should we be concerned about people leaving the state? what a consequence -- what are the consequences? >> one of the key reasons to be concerned is once again around economics. our state is very much a robe of state when it comes to consumerism, when that comes to innovators -- it comes to innovators, immigrants, all the contributions that immigrants bring. when you have a decline in
3:09 pm
immigration, in innovators and dreamers leaving, a decline in our general population, you lose the opportunity is to really harness that human capital. that is one of the beautiful things about california, it's always been we are california dreamers. we have the california dream. and what is lovely about this poll, it shows we are still very optimistic and happy with california. but there's places we need to ensure we are fixing and making the state correct when it comes to our economic well billing -- economic well-being. kristen: how can lawmakers and leaders build on the public opinions? >> a couple of things are really important. the continued investment in our in education infrastructure and ensuring there are opportunities for all to move on to either career title or to higher education. the other is investment in

small businesses and micro-businesses. there's a growth happening in our communities when it comes to micro-businesses and small businesses. if a latino that has a small business was able to hire one other employee, that is 89,00 employees in california alone. so let's invest in what we know is working, our education infrastructure and the small businesses and micro-businesses. kristen: much for joining us today. next, i shld a documentary that takes a cler look at the future of the texas" follows eight formerg to calirnns for a year. se the surprising things that we learned about the exodus to the lone star state. it is streaming on-demand on the abc7 bay area app. so, how are people feeling after the pandemic? the answer may surprise you. more on that,

countries. we asked respondents about a lot of stuff. most importantly for this report, about their experiences the previous day before the survey. we've been tracking global numbers on positive and negative experiences. the two parts of this report. on the negative side, we are at a global high right now of negativity if you will. this year, it is essentially -- has essentially stalled at that record high. whether it is stress, anger, worry they are all tat historic highs -- all at historic highs. today, 40% of people across the world say they experience a lot of stress. 41% on worry. 23% experiencing a lot of anger or sadness. but a third of the global population says they have experienced a lot of physical pain. which is a record high we've never captured before we started doing this in 2006. kristen: i don't know of that

has to do with long covid or other health things that were put off because of the pandemic. let's go ahead and show a graph, reflecting the positive experience index. you've been tracking it over many years going back to 2006. use the ups and downs. it looks like we did hit a low in positive experiences in 2020. >> on the positive side, feeling well rested, treated with respect, the day before the survey. did you smile or laugh a lot? did you experience enjoyment? did you learn something interesting? globally, the countries with the highest positive experiences this year were mexico, paraguay, philippines, vietnam, guatemala, panama, el salvador, costa rica, and others. mostly countries in southeast asia and latin america. kristen: let's go ahead and show the interactive map. we have that as well. you show the top and bottom countries in each of these categories, from anger to
3:16 pm
sadness. let's click on experience sadness r ample. top five means countries that had the most sadness and bottom five on ur right, i want to number one means the lst sadness? >> yes. there's two metrics. the highest and lowest negative experiences and the highest and lowest positive eernces. what icaed as you can go there and look up country by country, if you have a country of interest or a region of interest. ceaiy in terms of th positive side of the story, this year it was all about sohet asia andat america. on the negateide, youee some of them on your screen, the highest ended experiences were experice in afghanistan, sierra leone, chad, iraq, guinea, a lot of other nations that wouldoturprise you -- that actually tend to be on that negative side of the spectrum. kristen: countries whereou have human rights issues or political turmoil or war.
3:17 pm
i don't have the u.s. on this particular graph. but tell us where the u.s. ranks in terms of the positive and negative experience. >> in the u.s., we are above the global average, but certainly not seeing the dramatic increases in negative experiences that we have been seeing in some countries. i'm really happy that you asked that. it really is a story from country to country. we have ranges of people experiencing physical pain of 97% in some nations, all the way down to a low of 3% in places like vietnam. but there is also the larger happiness question. i wanted to mention if we have time. a lot of people focus on who the happiest countries in the world are, it tends to be scandinavian those are metrics that we gather the report on annually. this is a little bit different. it's about people's own experiences than the overall assessment of their life at large.
3:18 pm
the happiness index is really about how people feel about their life overall. obviously you could be facing a series of these challenges. but still assess your life based on other major life developments occurring. you see a big difference between those two metrics. kristen: can i ask you why it is important to know this? why we need to get a good grip on where we are at emotionally and our well-being? >> i'm so happy you asked that question. the reason we gather these metrics is in addition to and what the world buys and sells, to assess how the world is going, we've been tracking how people are experiencing their lives. because we know that how they experience their lives impacts their ability to work and be productive. but it also unpacks things like state stability and community cohesion, from the richest of the poorest countries in the world. the objective of this is really to give soft metrics, human metrics, human behavioral metrics to how the world is doing from country to country.

3:22 pm
seen and it's not just here in our city, where we have seen swifties have been taken advantage from especially on social media we have seen people interested in buying tickets. trying to save a little bit of cash. and actually end up losing money through peer-to-peer platforms, meaning venmo, zelle, any sort of those payments. they don't get any tickets and they don't get to go to the concert either which is probably worse. we know these are not cheap. kristen: how many cases of these have you gotten reports of? how many swifties have been impacted? >> across the whole u.s., in the report anyone that can go look at at bbb.org/scamtracker, we have seen close to over 1000 scams reported to bbb.org. kristen: my goodness. this is not new. this is happening for other shows, it's been around? >> yes. it's really popular with for example any sort of nba
3:23 pm
playoffs, nfl playoffs come along, any sort of game, mlb. it's not just concert tickets but also sporting events, festivals. we saw a lot of these also when you look at the scam tracker report for coachella, even here in napa for bottlerock. when it comes to music festivals, it is also a really good way to unfortunately get scammed. kristen: this is where we will ask you for your tips on how people can avoid buying fake tickets, getting scammed, what do they do? >> so, for example, if you trying to find a ticket to go see taylor swift, unfortunately, we have seen ads on social media that are fake. or it could be a friend or someone impersonating a friend of yours telling you that they have tickets, and then you send the money via venmo or zelle or other payment apps, and unfortunately you did not get an e-mail from the person with the tickets and therefore since you
3:24 pm
sent it via a money payment app, you have no way of getting your money back so unfortunately you don't get to go to the concert and you are also out of the money. kristen: all right. that is certainly good to know. i've seen a lot of sales, people offering tickets on twitter, reddit, people will say, does anybody have a ticket? and somebody says, pm or dm what should you do about that? >> if you can't see the ticket in person, or if you know that person, we do understand that most of the time, this can be a situation where someone does have an extra ticket. but if you can, try to only buy tickets from trusted vendors online. for example, ticketmaster is a big company that is used a lot. you want to make sure that it is a trusted venue and platform. even though it's really easy to try to save some money by going with someone you might know or not know in the long run, you
3:25 pm
don't want to be stuck outside the concert venue realizing that when your ticket -- one your ticket is a scam and that you never got it. you want to try to make sure to a trusted mentor if possible -- to go to a trusted mentor if possible. kristen: as people rely more on these social networks and direct outreaches, you don't know what you will run into, there are good players out there, good actors, but also some bad. what should you do if you do fall victim to this scam? >> if you do fall victim to this scam, you want to report it. we want to let people know in the public -- and the public know that this can literally happen to anyone so do not be embarrassed or ashamed. please go to bbb.org/scamtracker and report it. unfortunately we have seen situations where you don't get your money back. that is why if you can, try to buy it from a trusted vendor, use your credit card. most of the time, if you send your payment for the ticket through zelle -- zelle or
3:26 pm
venmo, it is impossible to get your money back. kristen: i've heard of people who have, but it's almost nearly impossible, if you use stubhub, ticketmaster, they have a guarantee -- >> yes. you can buy insurance for the tickets. one of the things you can do is it a business transaction on venmo and ensure the money, but there is a fee for that as well. kristen: thank you very that is all really good advice. really appreciate it. for more, go to the bbb's website. i'm sure we will see you soon. a reminder, newscast, breaking news, weather and more with our abc7 bay area streaming tv app. it's available on apple tv, google tv, fire tv, and roku. just search "abc 7 bay area" and download it now.
