the point richmond -- port richmond neighborhood. reporter: it is still a active scene out here right now. nearly eight hours after the shooting happened inside of a home here on sanderling island, outside of our viewpoint in this direction. we know that investigators from the richmond police department homicide unit as well as the contra costa county district attorney's office are on scene right now investigating and they are expected to be out here for several more hours. a spokesman for police say they were looking for a suspect accused of brandishing a firearm and possible discharge of the weapon sunday night in the point richmond area which happened after some kind of altercation with the victim. a search warrant was later issued for the home the suspect was believed to be living in here on the 1200 block of sanderling island. they served the war in around 9:00 this morning when police

say they found a suspect in the home armed with a firearm. he was shot and killed by police inside who said they feared for their lives. we are told more than one officer fired their weapons. a neighbor we spoke with believe it was a mother and son in the home but they kept to themselves. >> i did not hear anything as far as a gunshot or anything. when i was in the front of the house upstairs, i could hear the truck. i looked out and saw the ambulance and the fire truck. >> what i can release izzy was encountered in the home and he was armed with a firearm. the district attorney's office will conduct a joint investigation with the richmond police department homicide unit. all officers involved, although we don't know how many, have been placed on paid administrative leave during the investigation. while no officers out here were hurt today, we still don't know

if the suspect fired his weapon at these officers. in richmond, lena howland, abc 7 news. ama: thank you. an explanation today from alameda county's district attorney for her office handling of a string of thefts involving children. while there currently is not enough evidence to support the filing of juvenile petitions, we are exploring what opportunities exist to engage these minors and their parents or guardians to prevent a recurrence of these incidents. da pamela price posted a on youtube addressing community concerns after her office decision involving nine teens involved in at least 35 robberies around oakland. because it was a video release, we were not able to ask follow-up questions. price says they are open to assist as police continue to investigate. a man believed to be 90 years old is in the hospital this

afternoon after being attacked by a swarm of honeybees. it happened around 11:00 this morning at a field in south petaluma. the man went to retrieve his model airplane that went down when he was stung among -- from -- he was stung a number of times. he collapsed and his friend perform cpr. his friend said he's never seen bees so aggressive. i think they are doing something over there with the hives. but the bees were uppity. they picked on him. when he came back here, the bees followed him. they attacked all of us. as you can see, the bees were buzzing around barbieri during the interview. the man was taken to petaluma valley hospital and his condition is unknown in napa. . , firefighters made ama: . ama: in napa, cruz made qu

work of a wildfire. no word on what sparked it. dan: getting ready for a major worm upcoming. here's a look at the conditions. let's go to meteorologist sandhya patel. sandhya: some of the hottest weather of the season and the year so far coming right up beginning on friday. let's look at a live picture right now. if you step outside and you're looking at the window, you are wondering, what heat? that's because the marine layer is around right now. get ready for it. let's check out what we are expecting. excessive heat warnings, heat advisories and excessive heat watch in southern california. this is friday through sunday. in the bay area, heat advisory 11:00 a.m. friday until 11:00 p.m. sunday. we are looking at all inland areas to go under that advisory. anywhere from the low 90's to near 105 degrees.

there is an increased risk of heat-related illnesses especially since we are following a cool period of time. here's what you can expect. risk of heat related illnesses, limit exposure to heat and sun. drink plenty of fluids, seek shade and air conditioning, and if you can avoid being outside during the peak of the heat. do not ever leave kids or pets inside vehicles. i will be back to let you know how long the hot spell will last coming up. area is being affected by a collision between the coast starlight train and a water truck in ventura county. 15 people were hurt, one critically in the crash in moorpark 50 miles outside of los angeles. all eight train cars derailed but remained upright. 212 passengers and employees were on the train.

officials say the accident damaged the tracks. no word as to how long service could be impacted in the region. dan: tens of thousands of flight cancellations and delays across the country mostly due to severe weather, from thunderstorms in the northeast to scorching temperatures in texas and hazy skies in the midwest. that combined with the shortage of air traffic controllers and a surgeon holiday travelers is creating quite a messed -- a mess. suzanne phan is live at sfo for more on the conditions. reporter: so many frustrated travelers. you have families spending all day and all night here at sfo because they could not get a hotel room. they are sleeping on the floor. you have parents juggling crying babies. so many people in line for long waits because they need help. > i'm absolutely exhausted. i'm working on almost no sleep.

i'm a mess right now. reporter: joseph can't take it anymore. . he had to sit down after waiting in line for more than four hours at the united airlines counter at sfo. >> i can't stand for four hours. my back will go out on me. reporter: he and his family are trying to get home to grand rapids, michigan. >> i have my wife who has not slept in like 36 hours. i have two kids. they are spent. reporter:reporter: at sfo, there are dozens of stranded and exhausted travelers. they are barefoot and curled up in a corner. they are figuring up -- out what to do next. we landed at 10:30 p.m. >> and >> book a new flight. notifications have popped up all over the boards as some travelers are trying to desperately get help. >> recounted the customer service line, there were over 680 people in it last night. reporter: others are tracking down there luggage. >> that's a whole fiasco as well. reporter: teresa scott is trying

to get home to chicago after she was in oregon for her father's funeral. she was on a connecting flight through sfo. one delay led to another and then she got word. >> all they told us is it was operational first. then they came out flat out and said they had one flight attendant and they have to have four. she and others are facing exacerbated by staffing shortages and severe storms on the east coast. united airlines travelers are seeing the brunt of delays and cancellations, especially at sfo. . for travelers clearing -- planning to fly for the fourth of july, authorities say there could be more delays. >> we've seen past disruptions and challenges resetting airlines. when you have a large number of delays and cancellations, it displaces not only passengers but pilots, flight attendants, and airplanes. it can sometimes take a few days to get that back to where they need to be.

now san carlos residents want their city to do its part to prevent a future pandemic. this week the city approved an ordinance banning companies and developers from building new high-risk bio labs, the type of labs that do experiments on deadly diseases. >> here on the peninsula, subject to earthquakes, sealevel rise, a high and dense area, not far from residential neighborhoods, if anything should go wrong with the laboratory, it can be a dangerous situation. reporter: david -- david is one of the residents who voiced concern with the situation. he and others have seen bio labs built on the peninsula. he said residents did research and learned some could be potentially high-risk. >> all you have to have his people nearby to breathe it in and get infected. as we know from covid, one person becomes two and becomes five.

different levels depending on the type of study. scientists are not experimenting on pathogens on level 1. scientists study pathogens like influenza and salmonella on level two. level 3 three is more severe. they study diseases that pose health risks like hiv, covid-19 and the plague. level four is the most dangerous level, such as studying ebola and smallpox. send carlos residents tell me they don't want all biotech labs band, just the ones that pose a high health risk. despite the new ordinance, he does not think it would limit economic growth. >> we have a couple research coming in and two development labs coming in until august. reporter: they expect 3.5 million square feet coming to the city and none of it for lab levels three and four. he says sam carlos will add bio labs but want to listen to residents.

city hall. the supreme court overturning california's ban on same-sex marriage. >> i still feel a sense of great pride in what we accomplished together as a group. reporter: jeff and his husband paul along with berkeley couple chris and sandy, plaintiffs in the case challenging california's proposition eight, which put a halt to same-sex marriage in 2008. >> celebrating an anniversary like this it's important because it reminds us of all the efforts that have taken place along with decades of time to get us to where we are. repo currently tracking nearly 500 bills across the country taking aim at lgbtq+ rights, the couple says the fight is as important as ever. >> more work needs to be done. we had to fight for something we won 10 years ago and continue to fight for further protections. reporter: that's exactly what some california lawmakers are trying to do, introducing a constitutional amendment earlier this year to repeal prop 8.

ama: today leaders in the east bay celebrated new funding to help address environmental concerns and the impact of climate change. dignitaries led by congresswoman barbara lee announced 52 million dollars for projects to restore bay area wetlands. . it will also deliver money to under -- underserved communities. dan: let's turn our attention now to the forecast. things are changing and getting warmer. ama: it was nice that the sun was out from the get go today. sandhya: it was nice for a change, but not everyone is lucky today to see the sun. we will change that up though. let me show you what to expect. in case you missed us at the top of the show, heat advisories for all inland areas, 11:00 a.m. friday until 11:00 p.m. sunday, low 90's to near 105 following mostly below-average june. there is an increased risk of heat illnesses.

kids in summer camp right now, people who work outdoors. if you are in those categories, you need to be extra careful. look at these temperatures. they will go up into the 90's and 100s. saturday is the hottest day with those triple digits inland. . sunday, still going to be hot inland so the concern is this heat we are not use two is going to be really taxing on our bodies. keep that in mind and don't forget about pets. high-pressure will come in. for now still under the influence of this trough. that's why with low overhead, we are seeing numerous thunderstorms firing up in the sierra nevada. locally, we have gray skies and some people on the coastline never see the sun today. winds gusting out of the northwest at sfo, 31 miles an hour. . the cool ocean water combined with the marine influence. the marine layer is around 2000 feet deep still so we are not heating up just yet.
