up. ama: new 11:00, people are gearing up for the holiday weekend. for some, that means buying safe and sane firework as well as making plans to beat the heat. one place where you can do both is pacifica. that's where tim johns -- tim johns went to see how they are getting ready for the fourth of july. reporter: preparations are off to an early starting pacifica. one local stand tells us the first few days of sales are slow, but this year is proving different. >> we've had good uptake this year. reporter: hundreds of visitors come to celebrate the fourth. >> upset the police department or fire department. these are smaller ground things. reporter: this family bought a number of fireworks for their independence day celebration. >> four boxes. reporter: all the firework

right there for you. let's take a look at sfo tonight. flight delays will continue into the weekend as airlines experience staffing shortages. severe storms causing more chaos for passengers. the airport saw more than 300 flights delayed in 55 canceled, most of them united. in socal, tens of thousands of travelers are frustrated by long lines and cancellations. some passengers have no choice but to be optimistic. >> i travel a lot for work. this is certainly the craziest experience i've dealt with. people are keeping their cool, trying to do the best that they can. ama: atlanta's airport expects 2.6 million travelers within seven days. aaa says friday is expect it to be the busiest data travel. in the north bay, a man attacked by a swarm of bees was released from the hospital this morning. the attack happened yesterday in

petaluma. when the man went to retrieve his remote-controlled airplane, bees attack. his friend perform cpr until paramedics arrived. that likely saved his life. we've learned a uc berkeley student was killed while doing research in mexico. a group he was active with is honoring him and trying to preserve his memory. lauren martinez has the story. ♪ >> he is not just dance -- not just dance. it's prayer. reporter: they are dedicating this dance to a uc berkeley student who joined this group in 2016. >> you could tell he was very good. very considerate. reporter: a campus statement said he was in mexico doing field research when he was killed last week in sonora. local authorities are investigating. they say he was a botanist and a four-year phd student. >> this was his life's work.

reporter: garcia says he was engaged and his fiancee was also in the group. family members set up a gofundme to pay for travel and funeral expenses. he's described as a loving person who was connected to nature and his emotions. >> the way he went was very traumatic. he was a very spiritual being. we want his spirit to travel to where it needs to go. reporter: lauren martinez, abc7news. ama: governor ne the number of chp officers deployed to san francisco to crack down on the fentanyl crisis. abc7news was the first crew to arrive -- right along with the chp as officers patrolled the pit -- tenderloin. the number of officers will double. some are coming straight from the chp academy. we have updated numbers on the crackdown provided by city

officials. 71 people have been arrested since the end of may. here's where it gets interesting. most of those people are not from san francisco. 36 or from another county. 24 a from out-of-state. four our from san francisco. a pair of new bike lanes in san francisco's mission district is causing a stir. instead of putting the lanes along the curb, they run through the center of popular and busy valencia street. they are part of a pilot program. several videos of cars driving in the bike lanes and cyclists on the ground are circulating on social media. a sustainable transportation advocate is against the new bike lanes and says they aren't safe. >> this couldn't be a worse idea and it's the last thing we need to be doing right now. they d prioritize people on bike and their safety. in favor of allowing cars and more parking and more loading. reporter: -- ama: people should

harvard and the university of north carolina. in california, proposition 209 did the same for public education in 1996. lyanne melendez has a look at the effects of that proposition and what could now change. reporter: california has been testing the effects of a ban on affirmative action since 1996 when voters passed proposition 209. data collected years earlier from 1985 through 2012 from uc berkeley found that freshman enrollment of asian americans has steadily increased especially after 1996. but whites have seen a decrease in enrollment and e numbers remained flat after 1996. african-americans saw numbers go down after 1996 and have also stayed low, about 3%. ucla were ordered that in 1996, 7% of the student body was black. today, it's 2%.

angela says the transition was hard. >> i feel like it affects the legacy in terms of the future. it discourages people that look like me to come to this institution and ultimately get a great education. reporter: a uc berkeley student is with students for fair admissions. the organization that sued harvard over its admissions policy. >> it belongs to all of us who deserve a chance but can now rejoice over the fact that at least our kids can be judged based on their achievements and merits alone. reporter: usf school of law professor and eric and -- asian-american studies. >> many am asian -- asian americans have benefited from affirmative action, especially those in low income categories. those who are complaining are usually those that are upper-middle-class chinese americans. reporter: sonia sotomayor is the product of affirmative action policies. she dissented today.

clarence thomas benefited from affirmative action but he has always been adamantly opposed to any kind of race-based policies. ward connerly, forced -- former uc region, was among those fighting to pass proposition 209. he told us building diversity is not the job of a university. >> that is in their function. they are supposed to provide a place where people can learn. and they should not be using race on that basis. reporter: john roberts wrote, nothing in this opinion shld be cstrued as prohibiting universities from considering an applicant's discussi ohow race affected his or her life. be it through discrimination, inspiration, or otherwise. which means this leaves the door open for universities and colleges to come up with creative ways to get around the band on affirmative action. leanne, abc7news.

refuse to make a cake for a same-sex couple. tonight, a monumental final reparations report is in lawmakers hands in sacramento. the report includes more than 100 policy proposals including a formal apology to descendants of people enslaved in the u.s. and financial compensation. lawmakers and the governor have to sign off on any proposals for them to go into effect. a regional housing group is ho ching -- hoping to build a better bay area by making affordable housing easier. the finance authority launched its new doorway housing portal, developed with the help from google. officials discussed the importance of access to affordable housing and the teamwork that put the portal together. >> being able to see how easy it is to integrate people that need housing with housing that's available is the magic that we are trying to achieve. >> we had to tackle our housing

crisis differently. the fact of the matter is, all of us are elected officials and our little cities and counties, whether we be one of the nine counties are one of the 101 cities, we cannot solve this crisis by ourselves. ama: the url is on your the portal helps users find affordable housing listings across nine bay area counties. google has provided funding to provide for long-term management of the portal. for the first time ever, state and federal health authorities will monitor a dangerous bacteria found in baby formula. it sparked last year's nationwide infant formula shortage. the infection has been closely linked to foodborne illnesses it is rare but can be deadly to infants. several babies contracted the bacteria after they were given formula. two infants died after becoming infected. part of building a better bay area is taking care of the

environment. you can do your part next month. it's the perfect time to help protect the planet with a movement called plastic free july. ♪ we all know the problem with plastic. this. the end result when we are done using it. going plastic free for a month probably sounds overwhelming. ecology center in berkeley gave me some easy swaps we all can try. ditch the plastic bags and use your reusable bags every time you shop. grab a bottle and take advantage of water refill stations. opt for items that come in less plastic packaging. refill products like food, oil, household products at local stores. shampoo and conditioner >> my hair salon does do shampoo and conditioner refills. what is this about a bar of shampoo? >> yeah.

to the bay area. the wind flow is more offshore, blowing from the land toward the ocean. that's evident in the way the fog layer has just compressed in the last 24 hours. it was 2000 feet deep last night. now it's a thousand feet deep which means it's pretty shallow, right down on the deck near the coast and bay. it will be dense out there. heat advisory for much of california, shaded in orange. the area shaded in pink is an excessive heat warning. flood watch south of the sierra snowmelt will happen rapidly. if you are heading up to the mountains, keep that in mind. mid 80's to upper 80's. it will be unseasonably warm up there. sunny skies all the way through the fourth of july. here's the live view from our tower camera. here's the fog that i'm referring to over san francisco. it's limited. not all over the bay area. the visibility is down to three miles right now.
