[ laughter ] the final votes for last week's midterm elections are still being counted, but the race for 2024 has already begun. donald trump made a big announcement tonight at mar-a-lago surrounded by dozens of his closest friends and thousands of classified documents. [ laughter ] and here it was, the moment none of us have been waiting for. >> wow, whoa, that is some group of people, thousands. so nice. thank you very much, that's really nice, thank you. ladies and gentlemen, i am officially announcing --

[ laughter and applause ] >> jimmy: good for him. that is a big announcement. you know, it's not easy to potty train when you're almost 40, it's an accomplishment. [ laughter ] the other big announcement is happening after we tape our show. but by all accounts, trump is expected to officially launch yet another campaign for president in a bid to become the first american to lose the popular vote three times in a row. [ laughter ] there was some speculation he might be announcing something else tonight. you know, there've been a lot of times trump said something was going to be big, and it wasn't. just ask stormy daniels. [ laughter ] [ rim shot ] sadly, that did not appear to be the case. trump has been reportedly

interviewing staffers for his campaign, fun to imagine. it's the only job interview where they want to make sure you are crazy before they hire you. [ laughter ] they say he's looking for more than one campaign manager. instead of just one main person, he wants to have multiple people because he has a tendency to fire campaign managers. i guess he wants them to compete, i don't know. this guy doesn't want to be president, he wants to host "the apprentice" again. [ laughter ] that is the show. meanwhile, many prominent republicans are moving to distance themselves from trump after the midterm election. a group of current and former republican governors had a meeting this morning. chris christie got a big round of applause for a speech blasting trump. he said trump "weighed the party down across all three election cycles." trump is like, i weighed the party down? [ laughter ] you're the one banned from the hometown buffet, buddy. a lot of republicans wish this monster they helped create would go away, but he just keeps coming back, he's like herpes. [ laughter ]

once your party's got him, you can't get rid of him. all you can do is try to shorten the outbreaks. [ laughter ] but some republicans are standing by him. mike lindell was invited to the announcement tonight. he brought pillows to mar-a-lago. there were a lot of great thinkers in attendance, including a "stop the stealer" from january 6th named ali alexander. he bragged on truth social. "i received an invitation to mar-a-lago, november 15th. god bless america." ali is an extreme right winger who claims he has ties to the proud boys and oathkeepers. he's also known as "the urkel of treason." [ laughter ] this is who he invites to the announcement. this ali guy, the same person who the other day claimed he could fix the outcome of the arizona governor's race using the power of time travel. >> even if kari was going to lose, i would will it into existence, the reason why the new world order wants you to focus on fiction stories about machines is they don't want you

to know that everyone has access to time travel. i could prove that i've time traveled before. >> jimmy: that's a start. ali traveled many years into the future, only to find out he's a virgin there too. [ laughter ] [ cheers and applause ] he got invited to mar-a-lago. one guy who wasn't is trump's former right-hand job -- i mean man -- mike pence. [ laughter ] today, of all days, was the day pence's mildly anticipated memoir came out. pence sat for an hour-long interview with david muir of abc news last night, during which he recounted this dramatic exchange he had with a member of his secret service detail, as the storm trumpers who wanted to hang him were closing in on the capitol. >> secret service came in shortly thereafter and told me i need to leave the building again. and i said, i'm not leaving. but when my lead agent, tim

gables, who is a great public servant, came in, "sir, we've got to get you out of the building now." i stuck my finger in his chest and said, "you're not hearing me, i'm not leaving." >> jimmy: "and that's how my finger got broken." [ laughter ] mike pence delivers every line like he's starring in a dinner theater production of "a few good men." [ laughter ] i don't believe he's ever stuck his finger in anything, ever. [ laughter ] david muir asked pence if trump ever said he was sorry for almost getting him killed, which you'd think he might. well, you will believe the answer he gave to that. >> did he apologize for putting your life, your wife's life, your daughter's life, in danger? >> um -- not in so many words, but in sentiment he did, saved. >> jimmy: so the answer is no, he did not. [ laughter ] pence also shed light on what went down when they had their first conversation five days

after the insurrection. he hadn't heard from trump for five days. then they met. you can tell, mike pence is a man who really knows donald trump. >> i told him he should turn to jesus right now. [ laughter ] believing in my heart that he could find the same comfort i was finding. >> what did he say? >> in that moment, he did not respond. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: come on. can you imagine? telling donald trump, "you should turn to jesus"? even jesus is like, "don't tell him to turn to me. i want no part of this!" [ laughter ] and then pence told him he was going to pray for him and trump said "don't bother." [ laughter ] this is the book, by the way. i don't know if you've seen it. makes a great stocking stuffer. you can hang it on the mantel, just like mike pence almost was. or, if reading isn't your thing, you can listen to the audio book. >> we parted amicably when our service to the nation drew to a close.

meanwhile, down in arizona, a former local news anchor and trump worshiper kari lake has been defeated in the race for governor by democrat katie hobbs. [ cheers and applause ] of course, kari lake has not conceded the election. she's still asking to speak to the manager. when the race was called, she tweeted, "arizonans know b.s. when they see it." i guess so! they seem to have figured you out. [ applause ] yesterday, she appeared on the oan channel, this right-wing network, to offer this delusional look at her future. >> what position do you expect to find yourself at the beginning of next week? >> i think, daniel, that we're going to know before then who the winner is. i already know who the winner is, and the winner is me. >> jimmy: a real donna trump, this one. the senate race in georgia is headed to a runoff. which means we have three more weeks to try to figure out what the hell herschel walker is saying. >> and we were ready for the green agenda, i raised my hand right now, but we're not ready right now so don't let them fool you like this is a new agenda, this is not a new agenda, we're not prepared, we're not ready right now. we need to keep having those gas guzzling cars so we got the good emission on those cars. we're doing the best thing that we can but we need help and those other people not helping us, china not helping us, india not helping us. we're going to do it all because they're spending your money. >> jimmy: that's right, you can't argue with the facts, folks. [ laughter ] to hate gisele. and that was really fun for us. we really had the best -- >> yeah, because the more she hated me, the more i loved her. i just was like, "wow, you really have a way of seeing things." it's really -- >> she won't tell you this, but i will. when you do get to talk to gisele, just when, you know -- there were a couple -- the first day i got to talk to gisele, she goes right into it like that. it's a different person. it's not amy anymore. she just -- she's locked in you somehow. and it's so lovely to talk to gisele.

gisele is real. it's incredible. it's actually really incredible. it was kind of fun to think of things to say to her. every time i'd say something, she'd come back with, "oh, well, that's -- i hope we can do that, i hope we can be friends." she figured out how to make everything positive. it's incredible to witness. >> jimmy: is the singing a fun part of it also? >> yes. >> yeah, yeah. >> jimmy: you record that, then pretend you're singing on set? >> yeah. >> yes. >> jimmy: yeah. then we get the songs, you have to learn the song and the whole thing? >> not just songs. these are incredible songs written by alan menken and stephen schwartz. it was kind of breathtaking to be able to sing those songs. >> maya is so fantastic in the movie, i can't wait for you to see her. she definitely had a very hard part in this song. >> jimmy: did you get the harder -- >> we sang it together. we had hard parts. but we all know she can do it. i trained like i was going to be running a marathon. i trained every day, i sang every day. we had choreography.

it was like the movie "fame." [ laughter ] it was so fun. it was a dream. >> jimmy: you shot it in ireland? >> we did. >> jimmy: which has got to be great. these people, actors will come through, they're talking about these places where they shot these movies and sometimes you go, oh my god, this is not a place you'd ever necessarily want to visit, but ireland definitely is one of those places. >> truly incredible. >> jimmy: what town did you shoot at? >> a lot of it in enniskerry, which is in county wicklow. some of it dublin, our studio was in dublin. and balsbridge. >> jimmy: were people as welcoming as everyone says the people in ireland are? >> yes. >> absolutely, 100%. >> to the point of, like -- wow, you're really nice here. because there's a pride there too. and also such a beautiful history that they know is incredible. and they want you to love their country as much as they do. and so we were -- >> i thought you were going to surprise me.

[ laughter ] did you go to the irish pubs and hang out with the locals and really integrate with them? >> they were closed, we were still -- >> yeah, things were still not open yet. >> it was early covid days. as it opened up, i got to go to johnny fox's in wicklow and get a pint. i really had a great -- we made incredible friends. truly for life. and this entire crew is irish. i mean, everyone is local. >> jimmy: did you learn the irish phrases and -- >> oh, yeah. "what's the craic?" >> see, i always get it wrong. i have a friend from ireland. i'm like, "she has a good crack." [ laughter ] >> no, no, it's not that. >> no, she does, she has a good crack! no.

drive out to l.a. all the time? >> yeah, so four, five times a week -- my mom was a full-time e.r. nurse but she'd drive me, six, seven-hour round trip l.a. and back for auditions. >> jimmy: she was a full-time e.r. nurse? >> yeah, and she has five other kids. [ applause ] >> jimmy: oh my god, wow. >> yeah, i know. >> jimmy: hold on a second, that's great your mom works so hard, was so supportive. on the other hand, as an e.r. nurse, probably a lot of people died because you had to go do these commercials. [ laughter ] >> she was one of the best ones there, too. >> jimmy: what do you talk to your mom about for seven hours a day, four times a week? >> she went through i think every murder podcast that ever existed. so much so, i could recognize hosts by their voice and i've heard the same awful, gruesome murders through, like, five different people's perspective. [ laughter ] i know everyone's tastes. >> jimmy: things have really changed, you know? this wednesday, i mean -- this show looks like it's going to be a big show. you get that sense? >> yeah, it was weird.

on the day, i never got that sense. tv, everything is so rushed. and i didn't -- that's me being very naive, because you have someone like tim burton's name attached. i thought, oh, yeah -- >> jimmy: tim burton is one of the great directors, such a creative director. what is he like to work with on a day-to-day basis? >> he's one of my favorite directors i've ever worked with. he's such a sweet guy. or a sweet little creature. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: sweet little creature? >> a little bit of a creature. he kind of mumbles to himself. it's like his own little language. speaking to him earlier today, half the conversation was -- [ mumbling ] you're like, "totally, i feel the exact same way." then you go and continue about your day. >> jimmy: you're speaking a burton-ese of some kind, there's a language you have to learn? >> yes. >> jimmy: wednesday, christina ricci, who played wednesday in the movie in, what, the '90s, i guess that probably was, she's in the show as well?
