saturday, july 1. let's get a look at that weather. francis has been tracking the forecast and we are talking about how hot it is going to be this weekend. francis: you will want to stay cool, especially areas away from the water that will be sizzling. a shot of the bay bridge shows you clear skies, a little bit of low clouds. the sunrise happened, gorgeous at 5:51. temperatures already hot in the end this afternoon -- hot inland this afternoon. at the coast, mid and upper 60's. i will let you know what changes we can expect with the accuweather 7-day forecast, coming up. gloria: in the east bay, it was his culture for those who started their holiday weekend at the alameda county fair where there was an earlier fourth of july fireworks.

tim johns was there for opening day. reporter: it was a busy friday night at the alameda county fair. people coming out from all over the bay area to start their fourth of july weekend. >> we come to the fair every year. it is a family tradition. our grandmother always brought us growing up. reporter: a heatwave is supposed to last several days. >> it is a lot. it is definitely intense. reporter: people say they are not going to let the rising temperatures stop them from having fun. many of the water rights were packed with some choosing to go on more than once. the water rights were only one draw -- rides were only one draw. after sunset, there was a firework and drum show, the biggest one organizers have ever done. >> last year it was 100 drums, this year there are another 100. reporter: a lot of folks say they are just as excited to see

the drones. not only for the cool but because they are a safer way to enjoy the holiday. >> the wildfires are a big risk so luckily so far we are skipping the smoke from the canadian wildfires. i am hoping we can keep that trend going. reporter: tim johns, abc7 news. gloria: the marin county fair also opened in the heat. the fair returned full-time for the first time since 2019. that means air-conditioned exhibit halls are opened. temperatures reached nearly 90 degrees in san rafael but that is not -- that did not stop the long lines. >> we measure to put on our sunscreen. we have caps if we need them. we also brought a portable fan. >> i was talking to a guy who said he worked in the desert. he put the band and in water and put it on his head.

gloria: new developments o fire that raced through dozens of storage units two weeks ago. two people are under arrest and tens of thousands of pounds of illegal fireworks have been confiscated. lauren martinez spoke to some of the people who lost everything in that fire. reporter: an the staycation into an explosive fire at a storage facility that authorities to uncover a number of crimes. a storage unit on blossom hill road had a large amount of fireworks that caught fire. the fire was so intense, it burned the entire building and everything inside. two weeks into the investigation, san jose police arrested two suspects after fireworks with an estimatedlegal value of $2 million. reporter: those boxes -- >> those boxes were taken out of other storage units that

unfortunately did not catch fire. reporter: a retired chief told abc7news 30,000 pounds is enough to lovely building or burn one down, a massive amount now off south bay street's. >> it is the largest in san jose and one of the largest in california. >> that is insane. that is not just people getting fireworks for themselves, that is a whole operation. reporter: bryce said his family had everything in their storage unit because they were weeks from moving. he visits the storage facility every other day to see if he can salvage anything. >> everything was in there. reporter: the fire destroyed 30 to 40 storage units. the smell of something burning is now a trigger for so many others. >> i did not lose a life and loved ones are safe, but it doesn't take away the pain of losing things you worked so hard for you can never get back. reporter: while the cause of the

fire is unknown, arson investigators are continuing their work. after searching more storage units, police seized 13 ounces of meth, 200 grams of cocaine, marijuana, and one semi automatic firearm. fireworks seizure, dublin police confiscated illegal fireworks and one handgun. only safe and secure fireworks are in dublin. minimum w in six cities are going up. emeryville will have the highest local minimum wage, $18.67 per hour. golden gate bridge tolls are also going up for drivers with fastrak, the intrigue -- the increase is from $8.40 to a

>> student back -- student debt is holding back these young people from making decisions that are important to our economy. we are all responsible for that. reporter: president biden coming up with a new student debt relief plan, the higher education act which can use waive or release lots. pres. biden: we will use -- to get student relief -- student loan relief. reporter: the pause on payments comes to an end in october. borrowers will not face default for the first 12 months if they cannot make the payments. a new repayment plan will cap monthly payments at 5% of income which the white house says could save americans $1000 a year. with $62,000 in student renee applied and is now disappointed. >> we find ourselves in a

situation where because of that promise, a lot of us make decisions with our lives to move forward. whatever life choices we made, we made explicitly with the understanding that the president was going to get student loan cancellation done. reporter: when asked if he gave americans false hope on the issue, president biden pushed back. pres. biden: the republicans snatched away the hope they were given. it is real hope. reporter: an administration official tells abc news it will be months before they can finalize details and it is unclear if the 60 million already approved will have to apply again. gloria: today we are expecting the hottest day so far in the bay area. francis, how hot is it going to get? francis: there is going to be widespread triple digits for fairfield, antioch, livermore, including morgan hill as we show you a live view from mount tam.

gloria: today marks 30 years since the 101 california shooting that left it people that. it happened at a law firm at 10 california st and sparked gun-control legislation across the nation. lena howland spoke with a survivor about that tragic day.

reporter: before the route 66 music festival shooting, the pulse massacre and bu all the shooting came 101 california. >> there was a man walking towards us, he walked up to the man in front of us and shot him. reporter: michelle, who was visiting her husband at the law firm for the day, remembers running back into any office to hide. >> john was laid on top of me trying to protect me. i remember looking up and the government -- gunman and putting my head down until the shooting stopped. reporter: she took five bullets to the right side of her body. before she could get on the phone with 911 operators -- >> john said michelle, i'm dying, i love you. reporter: the shooter killed eight people, including her husband before turning the gun on himself. >> when it happened, it was big

news. unfortunately, it seems like it has become part of our landscape. reporter: in the months and years that followed shooting, she mobilized with other shooting survivors demand stricter gun control. >> the legislation that cannot of the passion and dedication from the survivors of 101 california street was powerful. reporter: the brady bill was passed which established america's federal background check system for gun sales and an insult weapons ban was passed through congress. it expired in 2004. >> i think it is worse than it was 30 years ago. i think we have to wake up and put child locks on guns mandatory background checks, and here it if high-capacity

the nba all-star game could be coming to the chase center according to our media partners at the san francisco standard. all signs are pointing to the warriors hosting the game in 2025. i last posted in 2020. before that, 1967. it is not clear who the warriors are up against but los angeles, phoenix, and milwaukee are also interested in hosting. san jose's oldest tourist attraction reached a big milestone. the winchester mystery house is celebrating its centennial as a museum. the winchester mystery house opened its doors to the public on june 30, 1923. the home dates back to the 1800s when sarah winchester began a construction project that lasted nearly four decades. it has become -- an attraction

san francisco, 52. oakland, 35. san jose, 60. half moon bay is cooler at 52 degrees. from mount tam, you see more the clear skies over parts of the bay area. some temperatures are already in the 60's like fairfield comes exit to. -- like fairfield, 62. nevada -- navarro, 50. concord at 58 degrees. it will be hot. there is a heat advisory through tomorrow. highs will be in the 90's to 100 -- to near 105 degrees. if you are away from the water, be careful. don't leave pets and kids in the car. stay hydrated, where led clothing. if you are headed to the beaches to get some relief from the heat , watch out, there is a beach hazard statement in effect through tomorrow.

also in late-night hours, watch for coastal flood advisory for parts of the north bay with high tides. the greatest risk between 10:00 to 2:00 a.m. each night, we could see flooding for areas highlighted in green. you see how clear it is out there. their quality will be an issue. we are expecting only moderate air quality today and tomorrow as the sea beast starts to kick in. it does improve monday and tuesday for fourth of july. we will have better air quality. central bay and south bay. here's the accuweather 7-day forecast. the summer sizzle is on today. we hang onto the heat for inland areas. we start to cool down. temperatures moderate. it will be cooler for the fourth of july, closer to average midweek and then breezy and below average for next weekend. try to do all the things you need to do to stay cool and

with a check of your forecast with francis. we have been talking about the siege, the hottest we have seen in the area. francis: the heat is on everywhere in the inland areas where temperatures could be 10 to 20 degrees warmer, but not at the beaches. we have this fog and an onshore flow keeping things cool at the coast. during a plan today shows temperatures in the next hour in the 50's and 60's, warming of ray quickly for inland areas. that is where we see temperatures at 104 degrees this afternoon. around the bay, mid 80's. as the coast, mid to upper 60's. the sunsets at 8:45, no relief for inland areas, but there is a bigger cool down in the accuweather 7-day forecast and that this coming up in my full report. gloria: we are expected to see a record number of travelers this holiday weekend.

mobile home stood? >> what does that mean to you? reporter: i got called -- >> i got cold chills. reporter: her and her dog barely escaped the flames. >> the last thing i remember is driving up the driveway and seeing the round barn. it looked like a huge monster inflames. >> as a local nonprofit, we determined we needed to be able to help in the rebilling effort. reporter: burbank housing ceo larry assesses nonprofit wanted to help displaced residents return home. the end result is this 94 unit affordable housing complex called the laurel. >> affordable housing is in high demand and so far there were hundreds of applications. former residence are getting top priority. >> it was a five year journey to

mountain view incentives a in low 60's. palo alto, 37. we will take you up to mount tam where we see lots of clear skies and a little bit of low clouds in the distance. santa rosa, navarro in the 50's. fairfield, livermore, low 60's right now. concord, 50. eight degrees of the east bay, you see low clouds, san francisco as we look towards the west. the coastal clouds will stick around. we get partly cloudy conditions at the beaches but for other areas we see rapidly rising temperatures around the bay and in the neighborhoods. they will be areas of fog overnight and then if you want some relief, a cooler pattern awaits us for july 4. watch out, a heat advisory and effect through tomorrow evening. there is an increased risk of heat illnesses for the areas away from the water. and then areas, just if you are at the beaches and the bay, temperatures will be mild.
