i will have your fourth of july forecast, coming up. gloria: in the north bay, the russian river is a popular spot to cool off and have a good time, but higher danger is a big concern in weather like this as firefighters found themselves busy in the past 24 hours. abc7 news reporter cornell barnard tells us that our bracing for an active season. cornell: calfire says two buildings on this cotati ranch were saved from a fast-moving grass fire which broke out saturday on one of the hottest days of the year. the fire was stopped at one acre. >> it is hot, it is dry. be careful and try to take decisions, mow early. cornell: friday, crews battled flames on the ground -- from the ground and the air. firefighters say they are

bracing for the heat and are ready for fire season. >> we went from a cool period to an immediate warm period as temperatures are in the 90's, up to 100. getting the cruise acclimated and we're keeping them hydrated. cornell: the cool water of the russian river was too good to pass up on a day when temperatures were sizzling. hundreds made the trip to memorial beach for some relief. >> this is perfect timing. we are getting up to the near 100's, and it is especially exciting for families locally and from the bay area. cornell: this popular swimming spot is reopening for the first time in four years. the pandemic and drought prevented a summertime dam from being built here, but now it is back, just in time for the july 4 weekend. >> it feels nice gay we have been waiting forever, it feels like, for the hot weather to come. it is perfect. the kids love it. >> it is nice to have it back

they say the heat probably kept everyone else away. >> when it started to be 85, we started seeing other people get more signs of heat exhaustion. really, the numbers dwindled. it is hot. ryan: others in the park or looking for any patch of shade they could find. after weeks of below average temperatures, those we spoke with say it is nice to have it feel like summer. >> you get used to it after a while, but there are only two crazy people right now playing in the heat. gloria: crowds made their way to crown beach in alameda this fourth of july weekend. the hottest day of the year brought people from all over to enjoy the great weather. >> we love the weather. we came from oceanside, san diego, california. we miss our weather there, topical weather. so we are here to enjoy it. >> it is so hot the sand is hot.

scene. police have not made any arrests. they say the department's homicide detail is leading the investigation. developing news out of san francisco's chinatown. one man is hurt after a shooting that happened on grant avenue near jackson street around 10:00 last night. police say, when they arrived, they found the 33-year-old man with a gunshot wound. he was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. no arrests have been made. the survivors network of those abused high priests will hold a -- abused by priests will hold news conference today. the group will address a priest who has been accused of child sexual abuse and is currently in ministry. the diocese has since been hit with 330 lawsuits alleging child sexual abuse, which led to the diocese filing for bankruptcy in may. the news conference is scheduled for 9:30 this morning.

santa rosa, 50 eight. nevada, 55. seeing 60's already. napa, 61. fairfield, 67. it is so pretty outside. i wanted to show you more live, shots, this one from mount tam. you can see it is a clear start for mount tam this morning. there is a thin marine layer, and that means it will have a very animal cooling effect for today. temperatures are coming down, but the will persist, with triple digits inland, then a much cooler pattern for the fourth of july. if you want it cooler, it is on the way. a heat advisory in effect until 11:00 this evening, so he illness still possible. four areas for parts of solano county, northern parts where it is a darker red, that is where temperatures can hit near 110 degrees. stay cool, especially if you are away from the water. that is where you will see the most heat illnesses occur.

comes to travel. here is a live look from sfo this morning. nearly 3 million people nationwide pass-through tsa screenings on friday, that beats the previous record in 2019. as lionel boys shows us -- as lionel shows us, it has not been smooth sailing for many. lionel: this is saturday millions of americans head out of town this independence day holiday weekend. tsa screening more than 2.8 8 million travelers on friday, beating the record from thanksgiving of 2019. but with the travelers and the bad weather come headaches. >> 10 minutes before we are supposed to start to board and they got over the intercom and said the flight to indiana is canceled. i was like, you are kidding. lionel: she finally gets to indianapolis for her boyfriend's birthday.

it has been a tough week for air travelers. one in 7000 cancellations and delays. united airlines back on track after departures out of newark were cut drastically for four straight days. the ceo apologizing to customers and staff after he took a private jet when even he could not get a seat on his own airline. he said in a statement, taking a private jet was the wrong decision because it was insensitive to our customers waiting to get home. >> there is really no straight answer as far as the reasoning behind these cancellations. lionel: a family from staten island was trying to fly out of newark for their son's dance competition. they decided to drive instead 18 hours. >> hopefully we make it down to fort lauderdale in time to make my first dance. lionel: to play expect more than 43 million americans to drive to third -- aaa expects more than

43 million americans to drive to their destinations. experts say on tuesday the best time to be on the road is before 11:00 a.m. or after 6:00 p.m. on wednesday, the worst time to drive is between 3:00 and 6:00 p.m. gloria: if you are one of those drivers come the good news is the national average price of gas is down, but in california, we are seeing the opposite. california's gas tax climbed 8% yesterday, which will increase the tax to over $.57. california has the second-highest gas price in the nation behind washington. a law increased california's tax every year. the money is used to raise $52 billion for transportation improvements and maintenance. you cringe military says russia launched the first overnight drone attack on kyiv in 12

gloria:gloria: welcome back. it is going to be another warm day so we will have a check of the forecast coming up in a few minutes. new this morning, one person is hurt after a plane crash landed in lake tahoe. two people were on board. had to be rescued by nearby boaters who rushed to the sinking aircraft when it landed yesterday morning. sheriff's office says the injured passenger has a serious head injury. authorities marked coordinates of the submerged plane. it was classified as hazardous material. before that july is right around the corner and authorities are preparing to fight the annual battle against illegal fireworks. lena howland has some surprising statistics.

lena: with the touch sparkler, four foot flames burst into the air within seconds, and minutes later, the flames had already raced across this hill. >>'s press beyond what you can control with a garden hose at your house or what you can control with a bucket. lena: they held this controlled demonstration to warn everyone that even what is considered safe fireworks like sprinklers are illegal. >> we have a bumper crop of vegetation out there drying out. it is not worth the risk. they are dangerous, uncontrollable, and in these weather conditions, they are irresponsible. lena: for the third year, they are relying on tips to the tip line. but the police departments as they did not issue a single citation for illegal fireworks last year on the fourth of july. instead, police say their resources were shifted to address heavy illegal activity

that night. we asked the oakland mayor what the city plan for enforcement is this year. >> for anyone thinking of setting up illegal fireworks, just know that our officers will be out and confiscating not just fireworks but making arrests as well if needed. lena: as for unincorporated alameda county, the crackdown on fireworks has already begun. sheriff's office easy nearly 300 pounds of fireworks earlier this week while conducting compliance checks which resulted in 14 searches. >> it is good for the communities we serve because our emergency services dispatch around this time of year, they start getting calls. those calls are going to increase significantly. lena: well they say the plan is to have teams of investigators on top of patrol staff in neighborhoods looking for illegal fireworks and responding to tip line reports, they want folks to understand they still have other priorities. >> we are experiencing a lot of
