>> building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions, this is abc 7 news. gloria: the heat is not over when we can expect a cooldown across the bay area as a heat advisory is still in effect. good morning. i am gloria rodriguez. let's start with a quick look at the weather. we have meteorologist frances dinglasan. it has been all about the heat this weekend. frances: just one more day to go and then we will start to see temperatures drop. here is a look at what temperatures are right now. 50 degrees at half moon bay where we have some fog. 75 in los gatos or 70 in brentwood. 50's and 60's around the bay. a live shot shows you a gorgeous

start in san francisco. we had the sunrise a short while ago with temperatures in the 60's and 50's. clouds will linger at the coast but still hot inland this afternoon near 100 degrees around the bay. at the coast, upper 60's. the sun sets at 8:35 p.m. we will see the fog push and overnight and a cooldown on the way for us. gloria: sounds good. thank you. in the north bay, the russian river is a popular spot to cool off and have a good time but fire danger is a big concern in weather like this as firefighters find themselves busy in the past 24 hours. cornell barnard tells us they are bracing for an active summer season. >> small budget titian fire. cornell: the fire at this was a fast-moving grass fire that broke out saturday on one of the hottest days of the year.

the fire was stopped at one acre. >> it is hot, dry. a lot of people out. be careful and try to make good decisions. cornell: on friday, crews battled flames from the air and ground, putting out this 24 acre glass fire. firefighters say they are bracing for the heat and ready for fire season. >> we went from a cool period to an immediate warm it period as temperatures are in the 90's up to 100, so keeping the cruise acclimated and hydrated. cornell: it was too good to pass up on a day when temperatures were sizzling. hundreds of families made the trip some relief. >> this is perfect timing. we are getting up to the near hundreds. it is exciting especially for the families locally and from the bay area. cornell: this popular swimming

ride. people are encouraged to add 10 minutes to their planned travel time. it was a hot day in the east bay, where temperatures hit 105 degrees and about yesterday. for some of you, this weather did not stop you from getting outside. when it is this hot, staying cool can be quite a challenge. here is ryan curry. ryan: this sign sums it up. the high temperature was just under 100 degrees, making this one of the hottest days all year. it left some still enjoying their day but finding ways to stay cool. >> some water, you know? get cooled off, hang out, enjoy the day. ryan: this group of friends is back home for the summer and went paddle boarding in the reservoir. >> there is a spot over there with a little shade. we were chilling and talking about old times. ryan: a couple go to school in oregon and say this is a welcome

overnight shooting to come forward after a man was killed in the bayview. it happened on 3rd street and kirkwood avenue shortly before 11:30 p.m. last night. when officers got there, they found the man suffering from gunshot wounds. emergency crews administered medical aid and he died at the scene. police have not made any arrests , and they say the homicide detail is now leading the investigation. developing news out of san francisco's chinatown. one man is hurt after a shooting that happened on grant avenue near jackson street around 10:00 last night. police say when they arrived they found a 33-year-old man with a gunshot wound. he was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. no arrests have been made. the survivors network of those abused by priests will hold a news conference today about the diocese of oakland. the group will address a priest who has been accused of child

sexual abuse and is currently in ministry. the diocese has since been hit with 330 lawsuits alleging child sexual abuse which led to the diocese filing for bankruptcy in may the news conference is scheduled for 9:30 this morning. if you are a victim of sexual abuse, you are eouraged to get help. you can find a list of local resources on our website, abc7news.com/takeaction. developing news, authorities are searching for answers after two people were killed and 28 people were hurt in a mass shooting involving baltimore overnight. police say and 18 you want woman and 20-year-old man were killed. nine people were rushed to the hospital. three of those victims are in critical condition. authorities say it happened during a block party. baltimore's mayor described the incident as a reckless, cowardly

some are worried that same-sex marriage could be next. we are digging into a strongly worded op-ed in the chronicle. as tara campbell learned, we could see something on the ballot next year. >> we were very concerned the court could be going the wrong way, and unfortunately it turned out that they did with a decision that is incredibly disturbing. tara: san francisco's city attorney is not mincing words with the supreme court back lgbtq+ protections, ruling in favor of a christian website designer in colorado. >> really the first time the supreme court has ruled in favor of discrimination in terms of a business providing services to the public on the basis of sexual orientation. tara: san francisco joining cities across the nation in hopes of persuading the court to uphold protections. >> we filed a brief on behalf of local communities all over the country. 53 cities, 19 mayors.

tara: and now concerns over what comes next. this op-ed in the chronicle penned by a former city attorney and federal prosecutor. same-sex marriage is in jeopardy. >> clarence thomas already told us in his opinion that he wrote overturning roe v. wade that he is taking a look at marriage equality as well. tara: that is why getting prop 8 off the books is critical. although the supreme court overturned california's ban unsafe sex -- same-sex marriage >> we are going on the ballot to remove prop 8 from the constitution, which banned marriage equality and to enshrine marriage as a fundamental right for everyone. tara: but even that may not be enough. >> the fact that this decision

they will go to the blue city. they arrived and were welcomed by a network of groups. one organizer says it is likely they will be in limbo for a while. >> so our immigration court system is incredibly backlogged in los angeles. there is nearly 100,000 open cases. because of that, court dates can be pushed out. the first court date could be several months from now. gloria: the migrants voluntarily boarded the bus. karen bass says her office immediately coordinated to assist the migrants upon their arrival. fireworks lit up the night at the fair last night in san rafael, and it looks beautiful out there. i know a lot of people i celebrity this weekend and

coming up on the fourth so let's get a check of the forecast with frances. another hot one today. frances: to be clear tonight, but this morning we are still dealing with coastal clouds and a shallow marine layer, but that marine layer will help us out in terms of getting temperatures to come down a little bit from yesterday. live doppler 7 shows clouds off the coast. and here is a live shot of golden gate bridge, where it is socked in once again this morning, but the clouds will mix out. this explains why temperatures are much cooler at the beaches. half moon bay is only 52 degrees. everywhere else, we are seeing 60's and upper 50's. oakland, 59. not in view, 64. palo alto, 61 degrees. everywhere else, clear conditions as we show you the shot from the east bay hills looking to san francisco.

there you see that little thing marine layer, and that will help cool us down. santa rosa, 57. napa, 56. mid to upper 60's in fairfield, concord, and livermore. how hot will it get today? this is how hot. 60's to near 100. we are coming down a little bit from yesterday, but still many areas will experience triple digit heat like fairfield, antioch, livermore. santa rosa, 92 degrees today so you will definitely want to hit the pool for some neighborhoods. and around the bay, look for 70's and 80's. san francisco, 71. oakland, 79. san jose, 92. fremont will be warm at 89. notice the partly cloudy at the beaches. santa cruz will be gorgeous at 77. there is still the heat advisory until 11:00 tonight. heat illnesses are possible because the highs have been some extreme and overnight lows have

only been dropping to 60's and 70's, so be careful. stay hydrated. don't leave pets and kids in the car. if you want to go to the beach, keep in mind that the sea surface temperatures are colder than normal so some folks may experience cold water shock. it will be crowded at the beaches as a lot of folks want to escape the heat. in addition to that, there is a coastal flood advisory through wednesday morning. minor coastal flooding for part of the north bay and the low-lying areas generally happening in the late white -- late-night hours. lows will be in the mid 50's to mid 60's with some more clouds moving in and some possible drizzle tomorrow morning. from mount tam to me can see how clear it looks. tree pollen is moderate if you are experiencing some allergies. uv index is extreme so slather on sunscreen. temperatures will be cooling livermore, where about --n

we are about 13 degrees above average today and almost 11 degrees or so below average next weekend. here is the seven-day forecast. still hot today but we start the cooling trend. cooler for the fourth. closer to average midweek. much cooler for next weekend, so the marine layer will kick in and we will get our natural air conditioning back next weekend. gloria: with a lot of people celebrating the fourth with barbecues at the pool and the water. frances: and going to the beaches, but it is crowded as you mentioned. gloria: i like the heat. frances: i do, but make sure you stay cool. gloria:gloria: stay safe out there. still ahead, we take you on a driverless car ride to san francisco to see if it is ready to drive people around the city 24/7.

it was not supposed to stop here. ok. we are going to pick my son up at the museum. i thought i was going to feel unsafe because my life is in this car parts hand, the computer, but -- car's computer, but i actually feel relaxed. i like that it is following the speed limit so it is very safe. when it comes to a stop, it does a complete stop, not like a california stop like we all do. like everything, it is something new. ok, i think we are stopped to get -- stopped. oh my god, yes. right now, there is a green light and nothing is happening. we are stuck. not only that, we are not even on the left-hand side properly. uh oh.

hello, max? sorry. sorry it did not work out. i feel trapped inside here. i just felt, like, so this. you don't hire a driverless it drops you off, and then it tells you your location is five minutes away walking. that is not even cool. my son could have ran or walked down the hill. that would have been ok, but what if it had been a disabled person, somebody on crutches, in a wheelchair? they cannot do that. i came into this with a lot of optimism, and now i am not sure. i would say have fun with it, but be prepared to be frustrated . so i am going to go now and drive to the museum and see how easy it is to get there. here we go.

we are talking about the heat again today. should we pack the sunscreen today? frances: sunscreen, sunglasses. still hot but not as hot as yesterday, so coming down a few degrees. that may be some relief. unfortunately, right now it is already 68 in fairfield. wrightwood, 69. but if you go to the beaches, that is where it is a little bit cooler, a lot cooler in this case with half moon bay at 52. it is gorgeous outside from emeryville looking to san francisco and the bay bridge. clouds will still be at the coast. temperatures in the 60's and 70's right now and we will hit 100 degrees for in the neighborhoods around the bay. mid 80's at the coast. the sun sets at 8:35 p.m. and we will start to see the clouds roll in. it may be more of a marine influence tomorrow. temperatures will be coming down closer to normal for the fourth of july.

i will have those details, coming up. gloria: thank you. we are still two days away from july 4, but this holiday has already been one for the books when it comes to travel. this is a live look right now from sfo. nearly 3 million people nationwide passed through tsa screenings at airports on friday. that beats the previous record set in 2019. even more people are taking to the roads. as lionel choice us, the trip has not been smooth sailing for many. carolina busy this as millions saturday of americans head out of town this independence day holiday weekend. on friday, the tsa screening more than 2.88 million travelers beating the record from , thanksgiving of 2019. but with the travelers and the bad weather come headaches. >> 10 minutes before we are supposed to start to board and they just got over the intercom and said the flight to indiana is canceled. i was like, you are kidding.

lionel: lily finally gets to indianapolis for her boyfriend's birthday. it has been a tough week for air travelers. more than 7000 fight cancellations and delays. united airlines back on track after departures out of newark were cut drastically for four straight days. the ceo scott kirby apologizing to customers and staff after he took a private jet when even he could not get a seat on his own airline. he said in a statement, taking a private jet was the wrong decision because it was insensitive to our customers who are waiting to get home. >> there is really no straight answer as far as the reasoning behind these cancellations. lionel: a family from staten island was trying to fly out of newark saturday for their son's dance competition. they decided to drive instead 18 hours. >> hopefully we make it down to fort lauderdale in time to make

my first dance. lionel: they will have company on the roads. aaa expects more than 43 million americans to drive to their destinations this weekend, up 2.4% from last year. minimal traffic expected sunday and monday. experts say on tuesday the best time to be on the road is before 11:00 a.m. or after 6:00 p.m. on wednesday, the worst time to drive is between 3:00 and 6:00 p.m. abc news, new york. gloria: if you are one of those drivers the good news is the , national average price of gas is down, but in california, we are seeing the opposite. california's gas tax climbed 8% or about four cents yesterday, which will increase the tax to over $.57. california has the second-highest gas price in the country. it comes second to washington. the gas tax follows a law that increases california's gas tax every year.

the money is used to raise $52 billion for transportation improvements and maintenance. new this morning, ukraine's military says russia launched the first overnight drone attack on kyiv in 12 days. according to the country's air force, the attack included iranian made drones and cruise eight missiles. the surrounding region were under air raid alerts. a military official called it another enemy attack on kyiv. it comes one day after ukraine's president warned a serious threat remained at europe's largest nuclear plant. he is accusing pressure of trying to trigger an explosion at the plan. ukraine has been conducting emergency drills this week preparing for the worst case scenario. a source told cnn that donald trump tried to pressure arizona's governor to overturn the state's presidential results. investigators asked witnesses

lit sparkler, four foot f burst into the air within seconds, and minutes later, the flames had already raced across this hill. >> it spreads beyond what you can control with a garden hose at your house or what you can control with a bucket. lena: the fire department holding this controlled demonstration to warn everyone that even what is considered safe fireworks like sprinklers are illegal. >> we have a bumper crop of vegetation out there drying out. it is not worth the risk. they are dangerous, uncontrollable, and in these weather conditions, they are irresponsible. lena: for the third year, they are relying on residents to report illegal fireworks to a toll-free tip line. those cut with them could be fined up to $1000. but the police departments they did not issue a single citation for illegal fireworks last year on the fourth of july. instead, police say their resources were shifted to address heavy illegal activity that night.

we asked the oakland mayor what the city plan for enforcement is this year. >> for anybody thinking of setting off illegal fireworks, just know that our officers will be out and confiscating not just fireworks but making arrests as well if needed. lena: as for unincorporated alameda county, the crackdown on fireworks has already begun. the sheriff's office seizing nearly 300 pounds of fireworks earlier this week while conducting compliance checks which resulted in 14 searches. >> it is good for the communities that we serve because our emergency services dispatch around this time of year, they start getting calls. those calls are going to increase significantly. lena: while they say the plan is to have teams of investigators on top of patrol staff in neighborhoods looking for illegal fireworks and responding to tip line reports, they want folks to understand they still have other priorities. >> we are experiencing a lot of crime in alameda county so those calls will be prioritized based
