, this is america. >> this morning. oh very good. >> monday morning, everyone. i'm lionel moise, in for angie. >> good morning to all of you. i'm ryan and allie. we want to begin with extreme weather impacts. more than 100 million americans as we kick off this holiday week. >> yeah, there's a lot going on for much of the country. extreme heat is the big problem. but elsewhere, it is historic flooding. this morning, intense heat and severe storms have triggered alerts for 110 million americans as parts of chicago under water after flash flooding shut down highways, stranding drivers. nearly nine inches of rain fell in some areas in a matter of hours. cars nearly completely submerged. this man escaping through the window of his truck, those who abandoned their vehicles had to wade through chest high water. >> i went and then my car just started floating and i said, oh, snap. so my first reaction is to escape from the car. i thought i

could make it because i'm oh, i got a truck, i got a truck. >> these drivers choosing to drive on the sidewalk to avoid the pool that had formed beneath a bridge. the storms proving too dangerous for even professional drivers. nascar calling off this street race halfway through due to the potential for lightning. >> i've never seen anything like it. >> more dangerous weather north of the border. this rare tornado touched down in alberta, canada, shredding multiple homes. tornadoes causing havoc stateside as well. two were reported in central pennsylvania , ripping off roofs and overturned trailers. >> next thing i know, we're on the ground and the buildings on top of us across the south. >> it's the scorching heat that's the biggest threat now blamed for at least 14 deaths, 31 of them in texas. and in the west, the heat wave there stretches from arizona to oregon. death valley hit 126 degrees yesterday. the heat taking a toll on wildlife. these squirrels in texas were practicing what's known as splooting, stretching out on

cool surfaces to lower their body temperature. all right. they need to try that myself later. more severe storms, though, are expected today from the carolinas to new jersey. we'll have a check of your forecast in just a few minutes. >> well, police in baltimore are searching for multiple gunmen after a mass shooting at a block party. two people were killed, 28 others were wounded. many of the victims are under the age of 18. in one witness who rushed some victims of the hospital called it a war zone. another witness described the chaos right after the gunfire. >> the people were everywhere, running out of breath, crying because they witnesses. a lot of people were shot at. >> the two people who were killed were 18 and 20 years old. and the injured victims are as young as 13. meanwhile in wichita, kansas, a mass shooting at a nightclub left eight people wounded. others were trampled trying to escape the gunfire early yesterday, police took at least one person into custody. >> we turn now to the director

england calling it striking that prigozhin, once a close confidant of vladimir putin, proceeded his actions with scathing words on russia's most senior military officers. the impact of those words and those actions will play out for some time. a vivid reminder of the corrosive effect of putin's war on his own society. >> the cia launched an effort in may to recruit russians who had expertise in science, technology or diplomacy. on the telegram social media site, the campaign provided instructions on how to contact the cia on the dark web. the kremlin accusing the us of trying to destabilize their country. and overnight, russia launching drone attacks on the capital kyiv after a 12 day break. officials saying air defense systems destroyed all targets. this as ukraine advances their counteroffensive around the devastated eastern city of bakhmut. ukrainian soldiers telling abc news they believe they can liberate the area. ukrainian officials again

warning russia might also attack the zaporizhzhia nuclear plant to try to disrupt their counteroffensive of director. burn says putin's regime has inflicted long lasting damage on russia's military and economy for years to come. as for that cia post on social media, letting russians know how to reach them, it had 2.5 million views in the first week. lionel >> all right. thank you so much. well the mayor of a paris suburb says his family has been targeted during anti-police protests that have been raging for nearly a week there. a burning car slamming into his house, injuring his wife and child more than 700 people have been arrested after riots broke out following the fatal police shooting of a 17 year old who was of algerian descent. french president emmanuel macron is meeting with lawmakers today to discuss security. also breaking overnight, what appears to be a major escalation of violence in the middle east. israeli drones have targeted militants in a west bank refugee camp, killing

at least three palestinian teens. 2000 israeli soldiers are reportedly taking part in that operation, cutting off electricity and blocking roads as. >> now to the race for the white house in a video shared by the ron desantis campaign concerning lgbtq rights. the video is igniting debate all across the political spectrum. this morning, members of the lgbtq community on both sides of the political aisle are criticizing a video shared by the ron desantis campaign on make america great again. the video was not produced by the desantis campaign, but was shared on social media to coincide with the end of pride month. it compares former president trump's record on lgbtq issues with desantis record. i will do everything in my power to protect our lgbtq citizens. the video goes on to highlight desantis support for restrictions on lgbtq people,

particularly those who are transgender. just produced some of the harshest, most draconian laws that literally threaten trans existence. transportation secretary pete buttigieg, who's openly gay, commented on the tone of the video, which mixes news footage with clips from pop culture. >> i'm going to leave aside the strangeness of trying to prove your manhood by putting up a video that splices images of you in between an oiled up shirtless bodybuilders and i just don't understand the mentality of somebody who gets up in the morning thinking that he's going to prove his worth by competing over who can make life hardest for a hard hit community that is already so vulnerable in america . >> the log cabin republicans, a group for lgbtq conservatives, responded, saying ron desantis is extreme rhetoric has just ventured into homophobic territory. a spokesperson for desantis campaign responded to

>> we are back now with a video of a stunt that did not go as planned before the austrian grand prix. >> while hovering around the racetrack, one stunt man's jetpack appeared to malfunction . and this is what happened. he tumbled down to the track. now despite that ugly crash landing , he is totally fine. he quickly got up. he saluted the crowd. he did limp off, though. >> all right. well, a 16 year old girl is back with her family after surviving 54 hours lost in the canadian wilderness. esther wang says she was scared and also lonely after getting separated from her hiking group in british columbia. she slipped and hit her head, but her survival skills kicked in. she says she could see the search helicopters above, but could not get their attention on. she survived drinking water from a creek and using photos from her digital camera to retrace her steps, eventually finding a parking lot. >> we're so glad she's okay. many americans will visit amusement parks this holiday week, but two incidents, one

involving a zipline and one involving a famous roller coaster are raising a lot of safety questions. here's abc's derrick dennis. >> this morning. two amusement rides scares prompting new discussions about safety. first, a heart stopping fall for the six year old zip lining with his family at a park in mexico when his harness snaps, sending him plunging some 40ft. thankfully he fell into a manmade lake below and he's okay. it's not the first accident on a zip line in recent weeks. last month in colorado, a worker helped a ten year old who was hit by another zip liner going more than 30mph. >> i just kind of grabbed him, spun around and took the impact because i lost consciousness. as soon as i took the impact. so i was just kind of hanging there, limp in the harness. >> another recent incident in georgia involved a father who says he saved his daughter's life when one of her zip lining ropes became wrapped around her neck in amusement park rides is

about 0.01. >> injuries per million riders in zip lines. it's about 11 per million. so it's over a thousand times more injuries in zip lines. one of the reasons is they're not regulated federally. >> meanwhile, this holiday weekend, a scare for roller coaster riders at the carowinds amusement park in north carolina . a visitor spotted this crack in a steel support pillar of the fury. 325 described as one of the tallest roller coasters of its kind. the ride shut down after video showed the beam, bending the top of it detached at the park, responding, saying safety is our top priority and we appreciate the patience and understanding of our valued guests during this process. now the man who recorded video of that crack and alerted park officials said his hands were shaking because he knew how serious it could be. experts say, before going on any amusement park ride check that park's record of inspections and make sure it's insured for the
