[laughter] kumasi: good morning, everybody. it is monday, june 3. >> we are checking in with drew tuma. drew: it was hot. the worst of it is behind us. today, it will be warm across the region. there is a bit of marine layer this morning. it is along the coast over the city. it is in parts of the north bay. the south bay, the east bay, they have mainly clear skies right now. temperatures, 50's close to the coast. we are in the 60's and 70's

where we have clear skies and mild amateurs inland. there has been warmth this morning. hour-by-hour, clouds stay along the immediate coast line today. it is cloudy over the city. today, we are going to the 90's. instead of the triple digit heat over the weekend, we will cool off into the 90's. 70's and 80's around the bay area shoreline. that cooling trend continues into the holiday. let's check in with sue and see how we are doing with traffic. sue: dense fog advisory on the golden gate bridge. he will need your windshield wipers all the way into san francisco. it is damp this morning. that will affect your temperatures. it does affect your drive. it is down on the roadway. no bright headlights. they do not work well with dense fog. minor slowing at the central valley over the altamont with

the -- over the past with the early morning commute. we have an earlier accident in oakland north 880. it was blocking three lanes, they had a sig alert. they just cleared it. things are moving -- things are smooth. kumasi: in police presence in unincorporated alameda county near san leandro's 63rd hundred avenue and clip support. this has been going on since 2:00 this morning. it involves chp and the alameda county sheriff's office. investigators have not released information. you can see officers searching a car. we will let you know when we get more information. julian: we are feeling the heat across the bay area. it led to problems for others. pge said at 1.11 thousand customers went without power over the weekend. you can see a few, scattered

green dots that repre customers in the dark. kumasi: it looks like all of san ramon has power back after being without it since saturday afternoon. a kfc in town showed us they were hours away from having to trash all of that food. last night, the orchards at walnut creek shopping center was filled with businesses that look like ghost towns. people at the brewery described it for us. >> we were hanging out having a beer, all of a sudden the bar went out. i wondered, is the heat causing power outages? it is crazy, all of a sudden the power went out and everybody freaked out. nothing crazy, but we wondered what was going on. >> i get it. i am from england, you do not get stuff like this in england. it is 100 degree heat, you get

this stuff in walnut creek all the time. we did not know why the power was out. kumasi: overnight, as many as 3000 pg&e customers were out of power. julian: fire danger a concern this weekend in hercules, we saw a small pacifier start by the waterfront. this was not just from the heat. fire investigators say initial evidence shows fireworks sparked this three acre fire around 2:30 yesterday afternoon. firefighters were able to get this out before the flames got out of hand. fire concern is always high this time of year. you i'd be hearing fireworks shoot off in your neighborhood. cornell barnard where they have a safe fireworks keeping emergency crews on higher alert -- high alert. reporter: her family bought at these fireworks stands in san bruno to

celebrate july 4. she says it about -- it is about safety when lighting them off. >> we are not mere grass or anything dangerous. reporter: a bucket of water close by. >> always popular are the packages, fountains shooting up this high. reporter: sellers busy fireworks, all nonprofits like cap saint andries. >> funds help give camper ships to kids who cannot afford to pay. >> it is something our community depends on two raise funds in the short amount of time. reporter: councilman martinez says san bruno gave the ok to sell fireworks years ago. he said -- >> people that wake -- are caught. san bruno fire marshal

it is on the front page of our website at abc7news.com. kumasi: a live look at sfo this morning, bad weather putting a damper on thousands of passengers plans to fly to their destination for the fourth of july. according to the website flightaware, there are already more than 12,000 delays today and 500 canceled flights. strong storms from the rockies through the midwest and into the mid atlantic are to blame for this. united has been having the brunt of the issues. that could be a problem for travelers in the bay area since united has a large up here. aaa protected travel this holiday weekend it's set to break records. you do not necessarily need to book a flight to get out of the bay area for the fourth of july. a lot of people are heading to tahoe, taking advantage of what is left of our historic winter. lifts state opened throughout the holiday weekend. abc reporter amanda speaking with a group of people who are taking off this morning to go skiing.

reporter: they took off about 15 minutes ago. we are here at the berkeley location for sports basement, where a bus of more than 30 people took off heading up north. they are on a tight schedule for the tahoe ski bus, taking in the snow today. they are going to be arriving about 7:45 this morning, they are calling it a last hurrah. despite the weakens warm temperatures, hitting the slopes this july 4 holiday is a option at the palisades in tahoe for at least a decade. groups from the sunnyvale, san francisco and berkeley sports basement locations are in for a day of skiing and snowboarding. without having to pay for and beating the busy holiday rush. sports basement is hoping the early 4:00 a.m. start means a

long morning nap, then waking up in snow country. many tell us this is an example of the opportunity for outdoor activities afforded by california. camping, biking, skiing, all possible within the same day. we are here dark and early getting with the group about this opportunity. >> this will be the latest i have ever skied by a longshot. it will be one of those things you remember, remember when we went skiing on july 3 and we did not have to hike? [laughter] that is cool. so. >> a resort spokesman says crowds continue to come, excited they are able to still ski into the summer. that is music to the ears of those who do not want evidence of our historic winter to end. the buses took off from the separate sports basement locations a short time ago this morning. at 2:30 this afternoon, they are set to leave tahoe and come

back. in trying to set up this story, i was in conversation with sports basement and they said i would have to wait until sunday to get clearance. they did not know if the warm weather or how the warm weather would impact this snow. all of them admitting that conditions may not be pristine, but it is the experience they are going for. july 3 skiing and snowboarding up in tahoe, that is what they are doing. kumasi: thank you. that is a memory. how much longer do you think is going to last? [no audio] drew: it is getting warm. look at temperatures later today, near 80 degrees. in south lake tahoe. if you are thinking about going to tahoe today or tomorrow, no it is warm. sunshine, near 80. across the state today if you are traveling, the valleys are still hot in triple digits.

the coast is cool. we have a cooling trend moving through california. the worst of our heat over the weekend is behind us. we are warm today away from the coast. patchy fog in the east bay right now. we have clear skies right now. hi clouds still in control of the forecast. unlike the weekend, it is slowly migrating to the east and allowing that cooling trend to move in over the next couple of days. future weather hour-by-hour, that fog is thick through the city for the entire day today and along the coast. away from the coast, sunshine. our warmest spots will be getting into the 90's from livermore to fairfield. it is still a warm afternoon around the bay shoreline. 70's and 80's from oakland to san jose. the coast and the city, it is a foggy day throughout the day today. three day forecast, that cooler weather keeps moving in the next couple of days. it is pleasant for the holiday tomorrow.

julian: heads up traveling to southern california over the coming days, 15,000 employees at hotels in the area are on strike. the union says they have been in contract talks since april. the union says employees make

$20 $25 an hour, demanding a five dollar an hour raise, better health care and retirement and if it's and a safe workload. >> during the pandemic, we were called essential workers. now there's no pandemic, employers think we are not essential anymore and think they can run without us. we know that is not true. julian: marriott released a statement that reads, we have remained committed to working towards a fair labor agreement. and have well-established protocols in place to operate our hotels and take care of guest in the event of any kumasi: to staffing. this morning, current presidential candidate ron desantis is facing criticism for a campaign video many are calling homophobic. abc news reporter ran an alley has the story. reporter: this morning, members of the lgbtq community on both sides of the political aisle are criticizing a video shared by the ron desantis campaign. ♪ >> reporter: make america great again. reporter:the video was not produced by the ron desantis campaign but shared on social

media to coincide with the end of pride month. it compares former president trump's record on lgbtq issues with desantis'record. ♪ >> i will do everything in my power to protect our lgbtq citizens. reporter: the video goes on to highlight desnatis'support restrictions on lgbtq people, particularly those who are transgender. >> i just produced some of the most to coney and laws that literally threaten trans existent. >> transportation secretary pete buttigieg who is openly gay commented on the tone of the video. >> i am going to leave aside the strangeness of trying to prove your manhood by putting up a video that splices images of you in between oiled up, shirtless bodybuilders. i do not understand the mentality of somebody who gets up in the morning, thinking he is going to prove his worth by competing over who can make life hardest for a hard-hit community

that is already so vulnerable in america. reporter: the log cabin republicans, a group for lgbtq conservatives, responded saying ron desantis'extreme rhetoric has ventured into homophobic territory. a spokesperson for desantis' campaign responded to the criticism, saying opposing the federal recognition of pride month is not homophobic. we would not support a month to celebrate straight people for sexual orientation, either. it is unnecessary, divisive, pandering and in a country as vast as diverse as the usa, identity politics is poison. julian: pride month has come to an end and one of the biggest symbols of the month has come down. volunteers helping dismantle the pink triangle atop twin peaks over the weekend. one of the organizers told abc 7 they thought about leaving it up for a few more days because the supreme court's ruling the meeting protections for lgbtq plus people. >> the supreme court yesterday

demonstrates why we still have to keep having got up on twin peaks. julian: the pink triangle was once used to bring people suspected of being gay in nazi concentration camps. it is a symbol of protest against homophobia. san francisco is the only city in the world that displays a giant pink triangle during its pride festivities. this morning, more than 75 million americans from oregon to georgia are under some kind of heat alert right now. along the jersey shore, people are flocking to beaches to beat the heat. in georgia, officials in atlanta open cooling centers to provide relief but the heat is being blamed for 14 deaths across the south. first responders in tennessee are encouraging people going outdoors to make sure you are staying hydrated. >> have you experienced heat like this before? >> no. >> a lot of dehydration. julian: in other parts of the country, it is not the heat but the rain causing concerns. a torrential downpour in chicago over the weekend flooded

streets, leaving drivers stranded. trains were delayed and interstates were forced to close, it put a halt to the formula one nascar race on saturday. chicago has had more rain this weekend then may and june combined. kumasi: in one weekend, wow. drew: we have been there. [laughter] that has been over the city the entire time. remember back in the spring in florida? the same thing happened in chicago. kumasi: that was really bad. drew: did you see that nascar race? kumasi: the car that flipped? maybe that was formula one. drew: they shut down the city and let the cars came through the city. it was cool. julian: the rain did not stop them any. drew: it delayed them. [laughter] there were like, i spent too much money on this. the heat advisories this weekend are done. today, it is warm away from the coast. right now, in parts of contra costa county holding out about

70 degrees. around the bay shoreline, 50's and 60's. a beautiful picture from sutro tower, you can see the fog below. some patchy fog in the east bay. highs in the microclimate, the heat is monitoring -- moderating. moderate air quality. 70's and 80's away from the coast. the coast is at the 60's. downtown, back in the 60's with partly cloudy skies and a breezy afternoon. in the north bay, 80's and 9 east bay, 70's and 80's. 74 in oakland. inland, we are backing out of trick -- out of triple digit heat. overnight tonight, our marine layer will grow. more fog as we head into tuesday. let's talk about tuesday evening and we will have fog. it is that time of year where we try to get fireworks in the city, but they are in the fog.

kumasi: here are the seven things to know this morning. the alameda county sheriffs office has just confirmed one person has been killed and two other people arrested after chp officer and sheriff's deputy opened fire during a traffic stop near san leandro. the sheriff's office spokesperson says the shooting happened during the struggle between two people in that car and julian: the chp officer. julian:the power is coming back on for people across the east bay. at one point, 10,000 customers were left without power over the weekend. things are improving. drew: head into the holiday tomorrow. the heat advisory and hottest weather for the weekend are over. we are back to average by middle part of this coming week. kumasi: weather issued at airports across the country are persisting this morning. -- issues, i should say.

good morning, everybody. julian: let's get you that holiday forecast right now with meteorologist drew tuma. drew: it is going to be warm in tahoe, near 80 degrees today. a mild day in the east bay. we are in the 70's right now to start your morning. it i we have a little marine layer this morning, starting in the 50's there. a live look from our east bay hills, a full in our morning sky. the buck moon year. that fog will stay along the coast line this time of day. we go into the 90's, but we do not have heat advisories like over the weekend. the bay shoreline, 70's. coast staying cool in the 60's. we cool off more for the holiday tomorrow. we will preview that, coming up.

sue: do we run into traffic? here we go. sorry, drew. my bad. traffic flowing nicely as you make your way on the 80 freeway past emeryville and on into berkeley and into the macarthur maze where traffic is light through the bay bridge toll plaza. we talked about an accident, it is blocking the hov lane of the bay bridge toll plaza. traffic is light and there is a look at your drive time from hercules into san francisco, under 25 minutes in the green. no other major problems to report, be back within the next 10 minutes. kumasi: thank you. the july 4 weekend brought crowds and visitors to the beach in pacifica, despite the winds it did not stop people from a giant -- enjoying the sun and watching the waves. >> we came out. it is sunny. ♪ >> we come prepared.

sweating, when you can be skiing? a resort spokesman says crowds continue to come. they are excited they can still ski into the summer, that is music to the ears of those who do not want evidence of our historic winter to end. this morning, amanda is speaking with a group of those people who just took off for tahoe this morning, heading for the slopes. amanda: it took them all of three minutes to get loaded and leave. that trip will take about three hours to get to palisades, tahoe. in trying to set up this story, it was down to the wire to see how this weakens warm weather might impact the trip. we know the group left from this sports basement location in berkeley at about 4:50 this morning. they are in for a day of skiing, snowboarding, ready to go. the sports basement team is hoping the early start only

able to go up there and snowboard and all of that. that is amazing. amanda: in connecting with people this morning, they are sure snow conditions will not be pristine, but are excited for this last hurrah. the latest many have ever skied in a snow season. buses took off from separate sports basement locations between about 4:30 and 5:00 this morning. at 2:30 this afternoon, they are set to leave tahoe. we know palisades is expected to be open for july 4, as well. we know the sports basement tahoe ski buses ran every weekend, this is the last time anyone be bust up their on -- bussed up there on sports basement the half. it is weird to see people in puffer jackets, all of that. especially after the weekend we

experienced. here i am, live in berkeley this morning. kumasi: thank you. starting today, a new strategy goes into effect trying to control illegal drug use in san francisco. now, anyone arrested for drug use or possession for a second time will be sent to what is being called drug court where they forgo jail time in exchange for treatment and until health programs and job training. mayor jenkins said the city would force people into drug court after five arrests and that number went to three in december, now it is down to two. one nonprofit that helps people on the streets says this type of enforcement could make the crisis worse. >> it is going to drive people underground. i expect what will happen is that more people will die of overdose because they are going to be less as a goal. kumasi: da jenkins says enforcement as a mechanism to get people into treatment is new for us and will take time to catch on. we are committed to address the

crisis on our streets. abc 7 has taken a look at potential solutions to the drug crisis. tara campbell traveled to vancouver, canada to take a look at north america's first ever safe drug injection site. she puts together a documentary called injecting hope. you can watch it on our abc 7 bay area streaming tv app. julian: policed investigating to mass shootings over the weekend starting in baltimore. city leaders say they are pleading for the public's help in catching the person who shot and killed two people and injured 30 others. the shooting took lisa around midnight saturday at a block party in the city southern district. hundreds of people were there when witnesses say they heard 20 to 30 shots go off. 18-year-old woman and a 20-year-old man were killed. investigators say they believe more than one shooter is responsible for the attack but no arrests have been made. >> treat this as if it were your own family. his -- if this was an event in

your community. julian: in kansas, police say seven people were shot and two others trampled after a shooting inside of a nightclub in wichita early yesterday morning. one person who was suspected of being at least one of the gunman was kumasi: taken into custody. kumasi:more migrants from texas are now in los angeles, the second bus to arrive from the southern border after texas governor governor greg abbott announced his estate will be sending migrants to the city. 41 asylum-seekers arrived saturday, welcomed by a network of nonprofit eighth and immigrant rights groups. one says it is likely they will be in limbo for a while. >> our immigration court system is backlogged in los angeles, there is nearly 100,000 open cases. court dates can be pushed out, the first court date can be several months from now. kumasi: loss angeles mayor immediately coordinated to help
