dion: here at abc 7 news means focusing on issue impacting assault including the environment. a group of students in palo alto are creating a solar powered car. dustin dorsey explains it is all part of a nationwide solar car challenge. reporter: the newest car on the streets of the south bay hsa -- has a max speed of 42 miles per hour, and able to draw our -- drive 200 miles. per charge. it completely billed by high school students. >> i would never think that a up high school students can come together and create a car that can cross states. we are about to do it. reporter: meet the solar racing club. a small but mighty and motivated

group of students from palo alto high better the innovators behind this solar powered car. completely made from scratch. this team has been working 12 hour days to develop and build his car to withstand a cross-country trip. >> and has been a process of and struggle. we are trying to go from a prototype and idea to bring it to real-life. there are a bunch of struggles along the way. as long as you're able to work with your team, you can pull through. reporter: the final day of production before the team is off to dallas texas to compete in the 30th annual solar powered car challenge. i schools -- high schools have worked together to come -- complete a race from texas to california. the students have completed the car in four months. >> we been working for months on this project. we would be proud to drive there or bring it there and drive all the way back. >> i imagine the real prize would be to see the steam, follow it through on such a

short time. >> that would be the best time for this team, to see their work make it. four weeks ago we were not sure if we completed the car. now we are taking it to dallas. reporter: not only are they taking it, but this team is planning on winning this race, back to california. >> i was hoping as the season progressed, i was doubtful, we are almost there, i think we can do it. reporter: if the team can pastor safety evaluations, they will embark on the race beginning on july 16. dustin dorsey, abc7 news. dan: how amazing is that? what they are doing. san mateo based company has been granted approval to test drive is fully electric flying car. it calls the vehicle the model a. it's the first flying car that is also drivable on public roads and can park like a normal car. testing will be limited to several places and it still needs approval from the national

dan: an ocean mystery is unfolding in order involving a green missile like object found by a snorkeler. a man says he was snorkeling with his kids when he found what he thought was a missile about five to 10 feet down. a dive team recovered pieces of the object over the weekend. police think it is a nonexplosive, u.s. training missile. the object has not been identified. police say there's no danger to the public. it's not explosives. dion: a little frightening. dan: it gets your attention. the weather will get our intention -- attention. spencer: especially with the changes. the heat from the weekend, the
