across the border in north carolina, strong winds and hail. power outages stretching from the east coast to missouri. more than 100,000 customers left in the dark today. the midwest and plains faced the biggest threat . >> you reset in the midwest. minneapolis back through denver, damaging winds and isolated tornadoes possible there. >> across the west, more than 30 million people facing heat alerts. las vegas hitting 112 degrees yesterday. a woman succumbing to the heat while hiking in the grand canyon in triple digit temperatures. meanwhile fire warnings have been issued in the pacific northwest. this wildfire in washington state burning several structures. dry conditions have prompted more cities to replace their july 4th fireworks displays with drone shows to reduce the risk of fires. there's less noise pollution, there's less pollution in general. >> and we can we can run it every single night versus a fireworks show where we can run

maybe once. >> but if drones aren't your thing and you're looking to beat the heat, the slopes are open in parts of california for some july 4th skiing. thanks to last year's epic snowfall, which measured more than 56ft. well the weather in the east is expected to be less severe today than it was yesterday, but flash flooding is still possible along the i-95 corridor in the northeast. we will check your complete forecast in just a few moments. >> breaking overnight, another mass shooting in america. this time in philadelphia. at least four people were killed and multiple children were wounded. the gunman was reportedly wearing a bulletproof vest and along with multiple weapons, he was allegedly carrying a device to track the location of police . abc's m wynn has the latest on this story. m good morning. >> good morning, lionel. police are still investigating that philadelphia shooting, saying the gunman carried an ar type rifle. multiple magazines, a handgun and a police scanner. >> multiple shots fired. a guy with a long gun. >> overnight, a july 4th

gathering turned deadly in philadelphia after a heavily armed gunman wearing a bulletproof vest opened fire into the streets, killing four and injuring two boys. police say the victims for now believed to be random. >> all we know is that this person decided to leave their home and to target individuals. >> the shooter identified as a 40 year old man, now in custody along with another who police believe picked up a firearm and started shooting at the suspect. the incident happening over several city blocks in the southwestern neighborhood of kingsessing until police cornered the suspect into an alley. they were able to get him into custody. >> i can't even describe the level of bravery and courage that was shown. >> the department hailing the officers for potentially preventing more deaths. this shooting, the latest in a rash of deadly gun violence across the nation. in baltimore, police are still trying to hunt down a gunman who they say opened fire into a block party, killing 18 year old elia gonzalez and 20 year old kylie fagbemi and

injuring more than 25 others. people were everywhere, running out of breath, crying because they witnesses. >> we won't stop until we find those responsible and hold them accountable. >> authorities now offering $28,000 for any information leading to an arrest. already, this year in the us, a staggering toll of at least 340 mass shootings. according to the gun violence archive and putting that number into context, in 2018, the gun violence archive recorded 336 mass shootings for the entire year. gun violence has been dropping for decades, according to the cdc, until it began spiking in 2020 with no concrete answers as to why and how rates can get back to pre-covid levels. lionel. >> all right. some shocking numbers. thank you. over seas, israel's biggest military operation in the west bank in two decades has forced hundreds of palestinians to flee their homes, at least ten palestinians were killed, 100 were injured as

drone strikes targeted a refugee camp. >> israel is calling the camp a safe haven for terrorists and troops are engaging in street battles. the roads have been destroyed, making it hard for first responders to reach the injured. doctors without borders says it has been denied medical access to the area. >> now to a new legal battle over the college admissions process. days after a landmark supreme court ruling, activists are now fighting back, challenging the way some schools give preference to the children of their alumni. it's been called affirmative action for the rich legacy admissions, the practice of children of alumni and big donors getting preference in college admissions. now, just days after the supreme court gutted affirmative action, civil rights groups are challenging legacy admissions at harvard university. in a complaint filed with the department of education yesterday, a legal activist group claims harvard's legacy system violates the civil rights act by discriminating against black, hispanic and asian

applicants in favor of less qualified white candidates who are better connected to alumni and donors. >> the civil rights act of 1964 has a provision known as title six that says if you receive federal funds, you can't discriminate on the basis of race. the complaint asks the department of education to declare legacy admissions illegal and force harvard to end them as long as a university receives federal funding, a recent study found that for one harvard class 70% of legacy students were white. >> and being a legacy student made an applicant roughly six times more likely to be admitted. it's not just harvard. the wall street journal reports in princeton's class of 2023, 73% of legacy students were white. and although last week's supreme court decision on affirmative action was seen as a win for conservatives, there appears to be bipartisan support for ending legacy admissions. >> one of the things that harvard can do to make that even better is to eliminate any

legacy programs where they have preferential treatment for a legacy. >> kids with public opinion shifting more action against legacy admissions could be on the way. >> i think that is really what we're going to see, even more than administrative complaints. and of course, if the complaint against harvard is successful, it is likely that other institutions will have to drop the practice too. >> well, harvard is not commenting. experts say, though, the campaign complaints could take years to investigate. >> well, the search for a woman who was missing for more than a week in massachusetts has ended in a swamp outside of boston. authorities say the 31 year old was stuck in the mud there for days in a park in the town of easton. she is recovering from what is being described as serious injuries. hikers called 911 after they heard someone screaming go in there with your best intentions to go and make sure she's okay and get her out. >> we all get into this job because we like to help people. so it's always kind of

tallest roller coasters of its kind, the man who spotted the major crack in the ride is now speaking out, claiming the amusement park in north carolina was in no rush to address his concerns. >> here's abc's alison kosik this morning. >> new questions about what took so long for an amusement park in north carolina to shut down the famous fury. 305 roller coaster after this large crack opened up in a support beam state inspectors on the scene yesterday at carowinds. jeremy wagner recorded video of the crack friday while waiting to pick up his kids who were on the ride. >> i looked back and looked looked back up there and saw light through the crack. and i looked at the other support beams that were close by like, okay, that that's really not supposed to be there. he says he immediately went to the park's guest services, showing them the video and giving them a copy and said, that's that's catastrophic

and don't have to be an engineer to know this. you guys need to shut this ride down now, now. >> but wagner says there was a lack of urgency, saying the park took nearly one hour to close the ride. melissa pinto's son was also on the ride. my heart literally dropped. >> i don't even want to know what the outcome could have been. terrifying terrifying. >> six days earlier, someone took this picture of the crack in its beginning stages. carowinds says. safety is our top priority and says all of its rides are inspected daily. but pinto wonders how the park could have missed that crack. >> and they said they inspect their rides daily. how did something this big go on inspected? >> the state last inspected the roller coaster in february with no violations reported. industry experts say millions of americans enjoy amusement park rides every day and injury rates are extremely low. rhiannon lionel all right, thank you.
