morning. a live look from santa cruz. a cloudy start across much of the region. clear skies and parts of the south bay and inlet east bay. we begin with temperatures cooler compared to yesterday, especially for concord, antioch, livermore. you are about 14 degrees cooler compared to this time yesterday. we are all basically starting in the 50's right now. we had throughout the afternoon. the coast remains cloudy. sunshine inland. temperatures pretty close to where we should be this time of year. fog will be a challenge for the fireworks. we will detail that coming up in about eight minutes. julian: as always. san jose police are investigating how this car ended up smashing into the front of the home and then into this tree. it happened just before midnight on second straight -- 2nd street and hollywood avenue. it is unclear how much it will cost more if anyone was hurt. we ar

for more information. kumasi: two people were involved in a brawl that led to a stabbing at levi's stadium during a soccer match on sunday night. video and witnesses both say a fistfight turned into a stabbing. those videos are circulating online. people who saw the fight say it happened towards the end of the game. at one point a man can be seen holding a knife. minutes later, another man steps away with blood on his face. >> at first i thought it was a fistfight. then i saw someone else who was putting pressure or applying pressure on the guy's chest. that is when it hit me that he got stabbed. kumasi: we reached out to levi's stadium and the association that organizes the gold cup. we have not heard back. julian: now to the preparations for independence day celebrations.

sky 7 was near oracle park where workers were getting ready for tonight's big fireworks show. workers were placing fireworks on the barge that will be transported from mission bay to two locations. the best place to see the fireworks in san francisco is on the northern waterfront, that is if the fog does not hinder the view. mayor london breed tweeted the festivities, a musical waterfront celebration that starts at 2:00 p.m. there will be several performances throughout the day. it all concludes with a big fireworks show at 9:30. kumasi: if you're trying to got to watch the fireworks, you might be blocked from getting to your favorite lookout spot this year. especially if it's in the east bay. this morning some of the roads in the hills are shut down if you do not live in the area. look at the map so you know what to avoid. it includes a five-mile stretch of grizzly peak boulevard between skyline and centennial,

including parts of centennial drive. you will not be allowed to stop at the dirt turnouts. people who have been there because they have been popular spots to watch fireworks. first responders are saying there have been too many people and illegal parking. >> gets a big problem because of the cars that would spectate the fireworks and block and we would not have emergency access to the area, which is very unsafe for residents that might have needed an emergency call. for emergency vehicles. kumasi: the closure will be lifted at 5:00 a.m. tomorrow. julian: if you want to celebrate with her own fireworks, here's a look at the cities that allow fireworks. pacifica, dublin, new york city, gilroy, san bruno, rio vista, di xon and cloverdale. if you're looking for a family-friendly firework shows or other events, we have got you covered. head to our front page right now

at abc7news.com. kumasi: here's a live look at sfo. a record number of people are traveling this fourth of july holiday. thousands are still feeling the effects of the stormy weather. flightaware says there were nearly 20,000 delays yesterday, with 668 flights canceled across the country. united is experiencing the worst of the problems. that can be an issue for bay area travelers since united has a large hub here. from thursday to sunday, tsa screened nearly 11 million people. 2.7 million day, which set records at airports across the country. julian: millions of americans are on alert for severe storms and dangerous heat. power outages left more than 100,000 customers in the dark. fire warnings have been issued in some parts of the northwest. dry conditions have prompted more cities to replace their july 4 fireworks with drone chose to reduce the risk of fires, including at the alameda

storms swept through the area. she shared the video of her broken windshield inside her car. the downed tree took out power lines. the woman says her car was almost new and had less than 1000 miles on it. she says the windshield can be replaced, the car can be fixed. she is grateful she and her dogs are safe this morning. drew: what a close call. much of the east is dealing with hot, severe weather later on today. for us it is quiet out there. a look from the tam cam. a lot of low-level level cloud cover this morning. we will have increasing sunshine throughout the morning. into the afternoon we cued the clouds hugging the coast. a lot of sunshine away from the coast. cooler than yesterday. we are closer to average for this time of year. plenty of fireworks this evening. we will have the fog along the coast and san francisco but clear skies do prevail away from the coast.

installations at coit tower and grayson cathedral. julian: one of the bay area cities where fireworks are allowed is now sending out warnings. newark officials are reminding residents say fireworks are only allowed through midnight tonight. they are prohibited in all city parks and as a precaution those parks will be closed at 7:30. authorities are warning residents of a fireworks an ordinance -- fireworks ordinance from last year that will be fully enforced. >> establishes strict liability for social hosts that allowed the deployment of illegal fireworks on their property or in their hosted gatherings. the city of newark is authorized to assure administrative citations of up to $1000 per violation. julian: according to both of police department and the alameda county fire department, they will have increased staffing to deal with potential issues. kumasi: preparations are underway for the annual fourth

we are breaking down the numbers. it is 46 years today with more than 100 70 entries, 2500 participants expected. 60,000 people estimated to attend. what are visitors and for? a pre-parade flyover by the coast guard, equestrians, dance troops, antique cars. it is the quintessential homegrown fourth of july holiday parade. more vips include nonprofits and community groups, local businesses, bands and more. we caught up with the mayor to talk about the do's and don'ts for first-time attendees and what this means. >> we hear all kinds of complaints and problems and tough issues come to us. it is so wonderful to have a day when you can just sit back and smile and see people and smiling faces and realize how much people love living in alameda. i think it is a good day to show

investigating a mass shooting at an outdoor festival celebrating the fourth of july. officials say at least three people were killed and eight others injured just before midnight. police said one of the 11 victims is a child. investigators have not said if there have been any arrests. another mass shooting last night disrupting fourth of july celebrations in philadelphia. police now have a man in custody. they say he killed five people. here is, when with the latest. >> multiple shots fired. em: a july 4 gathering turned deadly in philadelphia after a heavily armed gunmen wearing a bulletproof vest opened fire into the streets, killing five and injuring two boys. the victims are now believed to be random. >> all we was the person decided to leave their home. and to target individuals. jobina: the shooter, a 40-year-old man, now in custody along with another who police

believe picked up a firearm and started shooting at the suspect. the incident happening over several city blocks in the southwestern neighborhood of king saucing, until police cornered the suspect in an alley. >> i cannot even describe the level of bravery encourage that was shown. jobina: the department hailing the officers for preventing more deaths. the shooting, the latest in a rash of deadly gun violence across the nation. in baltimore, police are trying to hunt down a gunman who they say open fire into a block party, killing 18-year-old elia gonzales. injuring within 25 others. >> people everywhere were running, out of breath, crying. >> we won't stop until we find those responsible and hold them accountable. em: authorities now offering $28,000 for any information leading to an arrest. already this year in the u.s. a staggering toll of 340 mass shootings.

putting that number into context, in 2018, the gun violence archive reported 336 mass shootings for the entire year. gun violence had been dropping for decades according to the cdc, until it began spiking in 2020 with no concrete answers as to why and how rates can get back to pre-covid levels. abc news, washington. kumasi: days after the landmark ruling on affirmative action, higher education activists are fighting back against legacy admissions. that's the practice of children of alumni and big donors getting preference in college admissions. civil-rights groups are challenging admissions at harvard and a complaint filed yesterday a group says it violates the civil rights act. they say it discriminates against lack, hispanic, and asian applicants in favor of less qualified white candidates who are better connected to alumni and donors. public pavement is shifting.

more action against legacy admissions could be on the way. >> that is what we will see even more than administrative complaint. the complaint against harvard is successful, it is likely other institutions will have to drop the practice. kumasi: harvard is not commenting. experts say the complaint could take years to investigate. julian: abc news spoke with university of california president to discuss the supreme court's decision to overturn affirmative action. here in california, uc davis medical school ranks applicant based on adversity to admit more underrepresented students. president of uc, dr. michael drake, shared how i could help other colleges. >> we are looking at the life circumstances of the applicant and evaluating those and then trying to do our best job in picking the appropriate applicants to join us. we think it is quite promising. julian: california was the first state to ban affirmative and

education in 1986. kumasi: covid cases are being reported across the bay area, especially in two areas. stanford researchers have been collecting wastewater samples and they say they've seen an increase in cases in palo alto and san mateo county. despite an overall decrease in cases and deaths, hospitalizations are still happening. not at the rate that is compared to this time last year. >> largely people with underlying medical conditions, particularly type 2 diabetes and others. or, older people with underlying medical conditions. kumasi: in late june 2022, there were nearly 700 hospitalizations in the bay area. by the end of june this there they were around 200. julian: i knew crackdown is causing a stink among neighbors in reno heights for having garbage and recycling bins visible on the property.

the board of supervisors voted in 2006 to force every san francisco resident to keep their bins out of sight. none of the homes here have a garage or you can store garbage bins. one resident says he would have to carry his bins steep and narrow steps to get to the landing below. >> . narrow because they were built in 1906. i'm 83 years old. it is hard work. julian: the department of public works suggests neighbors buy an enclosure to hide the bins from public view. he wants to see that people are making an effort to comply with the law. kumasi: an east bay city may cut back on the use of restaurant parklets. alameda will bring back the road configuration on parking webster street to what it was before the pandemic. restaurant with the existing

parklets would have to make them narrower. bike lanes would have to make a comeback. the proposal we keep the pedestrian plaza on alameda avenue. julian: wildfire season is here and money from the bipartisan infrastructure act is allowing the was forced service -- u.s. forestry service to mitigate dangers in high-risk areas, especially the sierra. it begins with thinning out the forest. >> the intent is to go in and what we need to mechanically treat stands first, we will so and then come back in with prescribed burning to reduce that fire potential intensity we are experiencing. whether they are dead or dying or green but overstocked, we are looking at the standpoint of where the greatest hazards are. julian: the effort comes a year after the forestry service unveiled his wildfire crisis strategy with the focused on targeting the areas at most risk. also part of the strategy is

there a new focus on logging, especially in dense growth where it's impossible to conduct controlled burns. kumasi: beachgoers in los angeles are urged to stay away from sea lions this holiday. the animals have gotten sick from massive algae blooms along state beaches. in the east bay, the lakes are shutting down from algae. >> really unusual to walk by here on the fourth of july weekend and see no one swimming. pretty much unheard of. kumasi: parks and officials say -- parks and rec officials say dangerous levels of algae have blamed. multiple lakes and beaches have been forced to close. officials say many factors are playing into the blue-green algae bloom. things like weather, heat, and climate change. if you look at this map, this is what is closed in the east bay. niles swim area.

china's claim of the south china sea and vietnam. other films and tv episodes have been banned for the same type of maps in the past. there's a new feature taking hold and 70 cities when it comes the fourth of july fireworks. several places are putting on drone shows instead of fireworks shows. two shows are set this holiday. whenever brentwood's fourth of july festival and the other is the alameda county fail. sky element drone shows transition away from fireworks shows over the last five years. multiple drones are programmed on a computer to move in sync with each other, creating the display. officials say the drone shows will only be continuing to expand throughout the country. >> it's been going like gangbusters here for the past three years. we are flying a little over half of all the drone shows in the u.s. right now. kumasi: officials say there are environmental advantages to drone shows, including reduced

wildfire risk, lower pollution, and less noise. julian: drones replacing fireworks may also help solve another issue we see this holiday, pet to get spooked out by the loud booms from fireworks. it can be stressful for dogs and cats. lisa from the humane soc joined us with recommendations for comforting patsy may be anxious from the loud noises. >> if your home with your pet, keep them close to you. most pets feel safer when they're with us. some people even put -- it sounds funny but a tight shirt on their animals which columns their anxiety. some soothing music. please keep the windows closed. if you do go out to celebrate yourself, do not take the pets with you. some people think it is fun. no. it is scary for them. we want to make sure animals stay safe. don't run and go missing. bring your cats indoors.

breaking open the ice and bringing up the beverages. it is not even 7:00 yet. we are in for a long morning here in alameda. the 3.3 mile route considered the longest in the nation. things are still pretty quiet at this hour. we want to break on the numbers. it's the 46th year with more than 170 entries, 2500 participants expected. 60,000 people estimated to attend. attractions include a pre-parade flyover by the coast guard, equestrians, dance troops, antique cars, all the favorite. the quintessential homegrown fourth of july holiday parade. more vips on the route include nonprofit and community groups, local businesses, bands and more. we connected with the mayor early this morning and she broke it down for us, talking about pride for the city and provide for our country. >> we have lived in our house for 32 years.

just before the twins were born. not too long after ■that we started hosting a parade in our front yard, a parade party. if you live on the parade route someone will host a party in your yard if you don't. it is so fun to see everyone come out. i was not always th and in the parade so that adds a layer of complication. we mayors multitask. amanda: if you're trying to pla your morning, the parade does not start until around 10:00 a.m. closures along the route will happen in just a short time at 7:00 this morning. there's also a 5k run of the route that takes off at 9:00 a.m. the money raised benefits to midway shelter for women and children here in alameda. streatery spec to to reopen shortly after the parade passes. the city is also marking a change in the parade route.
