i'm trying to be optimistic for san francisco right now. what is in the forecast for tonight? good evening and thank you for joining us. >> the bay area is enjoying fourth of july. happy fourth of july to you. flocking to the beach and enjoying good food with friends and family. tonight we have the fireworks to look forward to. >> will we see the fireworks or are we going to get glowing fog? >> abc 7 news anchor spencer christian has the forecast. >> i'm getting a good look and we have patchy clouds around it san francisco. patches of clear skies. that is the sky condition going into the evening hours. as we approach the hour of fireworks, mid 50's by

coast. areas of fog near the coast and bay. at 9:00 before the fireworks begin, there will be low clouds and fog reaching across the bay to locations like oakland. it will not be wide spread and if it is not, we will have a good view of fireworks in san francisco. inland areas, no worries. clear skies and good view of fireworks in locations away from the coast and the bay. temperatures will be comfortable as well. on this independence day, fireworks depend -- your view depends on just how deep and dense the fog will be. at the moment we are being hopeful. >> hanging on. thank you very much. because of concern about fire grizzly peak is closed again from skyline to centennial drive. this is a popular spot for people to watch fireworks but because of the danger of wildfire this stretch of road

will be closed until 5 a.m.. there will be a emergency personnel to keep people from entering. to see which cities a holding fireworks shows,be inland, head to our website. the local list is on the front page of abc 7 news.com. >> final preparations are swing for san francisco's fireworks spectacular. now a little more than three hours away, it's billed as the biggest fourth of july fireworks show in northern california. abc 7 news got a look as pyrotechnics experts put on finishing touches. show producers think they have a way to outwit the fog and keep it from dimming the fireworks. >> we decided we will start the display at the deck. we have filled in the lower level that was not filled in last year. the show will go up to 12 1500 feet at the upper level but there will be things to see in

the lower level. >> quite a science to it. fireworks will be launched, barges on the bay, one located at. 39, the other at aquatic park. there are tourists in san francisco for the fourth of july but tourists in china have n returned in the same numbers as before the pandemic. abc 7 news reporter bn melendez tells us why they seem to be staying away. >> when the chinese government lifted covid restrictions at the beginning of this year san francisco thought chinese tourists would flood into san francisco, except that it has not happened. in 2019 prior to the pandemic, china was san francisco's top international market with 500 thousand visitors spending $1.2 billion a year. local travel agents are blaming it in part on the tense relationship between china and the u.s.. >> politics, ok, that's why a

lot of people are not coming in. they might be dropping to the 50 or 60's choice coming to san francisco. >> the state department is recommending americans reconsider traveling to china after a 78-year-old u.s. citizen was sentenced to life in prison on spying charges in may. another reason why people in the region are not traveling to the u.s. is that there is a backlog of tourist visas and not enough flights to get here. >> if we travel to a broad, it cost us much to travel. we need a lot of documents to be here. >> on a positive note in november san francisco will host the annual apec summit 121 economies from the asia-pacific region will converge. >> japan has a hotel, china has a hotel. like people are coming here in november and we hope that that starts to restore a lot of the confidence from the continent of asia of people coming back to

san francisco to visit. >> travel groups from china other regions will make their way here in 2024 at the earliest. in san francisco, leeann melendez, abc 7 news. >> we have new details on a crime that someone stole a military humvee from the national guard armory in santa rosa. it happened last night. abc 7 news reporter has the latest on the investigation and how this happened. >> in addition to it being green and a humvee, that should be specific. there is potentially collision damage to the front from crashing through a barrier date. >> this is chp officer marcus describing a vehicle similar to this one that was stolen from the national guard armory in santa rosa. >> we started getting reports of a reckless driver, speeding driver and a humvee. >> chp says there is evidence someone climbed the fence to break into the armory and used the vehicle to break out.

armories are used by the national guard as a place to train and store military equipment. >> did someone have to have a military background to get that thing going? >> i believe that is a safe assumption to make. if you were not in the military you can only imagine what it takes to start a humvee. >> the calls came in of a military style vehicle driving recklessly with no lights. chp launched -- launched units to river and barnes road but found nothing. >> the sonoma county sheriff's department is aware of what happened. we were hoping that when daylight came out we would find and abandon humvee in the west county but that has not been the case. >> the humvee did not have any plates and was not designed for street use. there were no weapons or ammunition in the vehicle. in santa rosa, abc 7 news. >> san francisco police are investigating a fire over the weekend at the consulate general

♪ >> b parade route in the nation the city of alameda showcased 2500 participants along the 3.3 mile route for its 46th annual independence day celebration. the island town expected 60,000 spectators. many set out chairs last night to save themselves the perfect viewing spot. a steady stream of red, white and blue made its way down main street in martinez. more than 40 groups took part in the fourth of july parade. the city held a flag raising

a tradition worth keeping. >> if i don't do anything else or see fireworks i don't care because i've done it all. i've been with a great group of people, it's been fabulous. we have been sharing together. it's wonderful. >> happy fourth of july. >> in danville, abc 7 news. >> over in the south bay the san jose animal shelter has been at capacity since before the fourth with 821 animals at last count. shelters say more pets go missing on the fourth of july than any other day of the year. running away due to anxiety and stress from fireworks. that is why it is important for pet owners to make plans if they are going out. >> keeping them at home in a quiet place, drawing the curtains, putting music on in the background, a sound machine, something like that. it would help. >> make sure your animals are microchip, where a tag with contact information or attach an

air attack to their collar. if you find an animal in your neighborhood, it is best to check the houses nearby before taking them to a shelter. most animals do not stray too far from home. in the north bay the birth o american independence brought people together at the parade in of berg. a day of fun and celebration included festivities at the town park. the festival featured food booths, kids activities and a marketplace showcasing work from local craftspeople. >> to the peninsula where organizers say this is the largest fourth of july parade in california. it brings in groups from across the state to redwood city. each entry is screened by a committee, 200 entries are accepted. linda carter leaning was grand marshal. a lot of people celebrated the fourth of july on the coast.

half moon bay and pacifica were packed with people who attended parades and went to the beach. abc 7 news reporter ryan curry has that story. ♪ >> patriotism on the california coast. hundreds came to half moon bay for the annual fourth of july celebrations. >> it is a nice day, wearing jeans which i love. able to check out what is going on with the horses and the rest of the parade. >> it was a full parade complete with local fire department and a dancing pumpkin mascot. it featured a beer chug girl he in the morning but it is a holiday. >> honestly, we're going to watch the parade until it ends and have a barbecue. >> the community remembers the tragic mass shooting at nearby farms this year. on the fourth of july those present say the community is as strong as ever. >> everyone is enjoying each other. up and down and nothing but smiles. great to see so many people

coming to the coast. >> it was not just the parade, beaches were full by midday. parking, good luck. people came early setting up tents, swimming in the waters and firing up the grill but you did not need to go to the beach to have fun. in pacifica it was about the hot rods. >> pacifica is a special place. nostalgia, history here. a lot of people want to have a good time on the fourth of july. >> diego says for 20 years they've been doing a classic car parade. it started small but has grown into a large gathering of cars you won't find in many places. >> we had hot rods in the neighborhood and that's how we started, three cars and one motorcycle. today we had over 160 cars. >> whether it's writing in a 70's corvette or building a sand castle, the coastline had it all this fourth of july. abc 7 news. >> that looks nice at the beach. >> do you think spencer is tired of us asking him that question?

>> we are keeping the pressure on for the fireworks. >> i am enjoying being the man of the hour or the last three hours. but on this independence day as i said earlier, we are dependent on fog. let's look at what is going on. breezy early evening developing with gusts up to 32 miles per hour in oakland, breezy in all locations along the coast and bay. we are not talking about devastating or damaging gusts. it's cooler by a few degrees than yesterday in most locations. let's move along and look at sky conditions. this is from the rooftop camera at abc 7, looking across the bay. skies are blue in that direction, 62 in santa rosa, 63 oakland, mountain view 68, 72 san jose. 50 seven half moon bay. at the golden gate a different picture as we see lots of clouds. not getting low or dense but they are increasing their reach across the bay. temperature readings of 67 santa

rosa, napa 69 and we have upper 70's in fairfield, concord and livermore. mild weather. this is the view from emeryville westward and that is not promising because the cloud deck is getting deeper or growing higher than one hour ago which means it may have not the world's best view of fireworks in san francisco. the forecast, mixed viewing conditions for the fireworks. inland areas where skies are clear, great view. san francisco, clouds are increasing. we may not have a great view. cooler afternoons the next few days and it will be warming up at the beginning of next week. here is the forecast, fireworks forecast i should say. clouds are increasing at the coastline, pushing across the bay. 9:00 before the fireworks begin we will have clouds in san francisco for sure. reaching locally across the bay

in oakland and san leandro. if the clouds are not dense the view of fireworks will be not bad. if the clouds get deeper and denser they will obscure our view and it will not be the greatest view ever. inland areas under clear skies, nice view. relatively mild, temperatures near the coast and san francisco will be mid-50's and the farther east or inland you go the milder it gets into the low to mid 60's. on we go to the forecast animation, clouds extending across the bay reaching far inland to the central valley. there will be drizzle near the coast so commuters may encounter damp spots because of the drizzle. overnight low temperatures mainly in the 50's and as for tomorrow, the fifth of july, sunny skies in the south bay with high temperatures from 77 to 82 in morganville. on the peninsula, mid to upper 70's. 72 san mateo, 77 river city.

nice event. july 4 has taken on new meaning for a lot of people in light of the controversial supreme court decisions. >> abc 7 news reporter suzanne talk to people in several different san francisco neighborhoods and ask them about what independence day means to them. the fourth of fireworks. it means fun and a lot of red white and blue for some people. >> i have red, white and blue on because i am going to barbecue. >> we asked people in three neighborhoods the same question. what does independence day mean to you? in the castro we heard -- >> it's a chance to celebrate the united states and the founding. >> the recent supreme court decisions may be reasons people felt differently about july 4. >> it is a difficult time, things are conflicted. im not happy about a lot of the policies and ideas. >> supreme court allowed creative businesses to refuse service to lgbtq+ customers.

that police say started as a confrontation between rival groups. three people were killed and eight others injured. one of the victims was a child. another an 18-year-old man in the third a 22-year-old woman. the shooting happened last night after a july 4 event called como fest that drew hundreds to the neighborhood. the event ended hours before the shooting. in philadelphia a shooting spree last night claimed five lives. the youngest victim, 15 years old. it injured two children. police say the first victim was killed in a house, than the suspect randomly fired while on the street before he was arrested. they say he was carrying a police radio, wearing a bulletproof vest in armed with an ar-15 style rifle and a handgun. police do not believe he had any connection to the victims. the suspect is awaiting arraignment. >> new details on a stabbing at levi stadium over the weekend. police are asking for help finding two people tied to the

incident. much of it caught on video. south bay reporter dustin dorsey has the latest on the investigation and what police plan to do to keep spectators safe. >> friendly competition turned deadly sunday evening at levi stadium. santa clara police say after a fight broke out between a group of fans during the end of the gold cup match between mexico and qatar, a man was left with a critical stab wound near his collarbone. public information officer lieutenant said they're not sure how a knife made its way to the stadium. >> when a guest enters they are required to go through a magnet -- metal detector. they are secondarily screened if something comes through. a knife did get through. we are sifting through the information in trying to identify suspects. >> detectives are asking for the public's help in finding this man suspected of stabbing another fan during the brawl and this woman considered a person of interest. investigators have been arable
