exploding across the east bay. this was the perspective from the oakland hills. dan: a great show over the -- bay. tim johns has more on that. reporter: despite some fog and the chilly temperatures, thousands of people packed the waterfront in san francisco in order to see the fireworks tonight. many of them saying they won't let the weather ruin their holiday. to watch was aquatic park. >> i'm excited to see the colors of the fireworks. just have a good time. reporter: thousands packed the waterfront along the embarcadero with people coming from both near and far. olivia and her family are visiting from sweden. >> is very exciting. we were talking about that. we do want to stay here for the fourth of july. reporter: at aquatic park, the

atmosphere was festive. >> we wanted to feel this environment and be here. the fireworks are the pull. it's reporter: many had been camping out all day including this family who drove out from contra costa county early at 9:00. they say watching the fireworks show has become a family tradition. they've been out here every fourth of july for the past eight years. >> come out here to see good people, good times. like i say, with all these things going on in the world, it's good to see that people can still have a good time. reporter: they know weather conditions can make seeing the fireworks a gamble but for them the holiday family time makes it worth it. >> we see it as an experience for the whole day. in the end, hopefully we see fireworks. reporter: in order to plan for foggy or cloudy conditions, organizers designs a fireworks

show tonight to be at a multitude of different levels. that way everyone can see at least something. tim johns, abc7news. dan: everyone saw a lot of something. thank you. despite the warnings, it wasn't just legal fireworks tonight. sky 7 caught a lot of illegal fireworks shows happening across the bay area. fireworks in cities including san francisco, oakland, and others. we spoke with steve hill from the contra costa fire department to see how they are prepared for these types of events. he warns residents of the potential dangers that come from this illegal show. >> they are dangerous interns of the injuries they create every year. we've already had some interest -- injuries in this year as a result of fireworks. dan: contra costa fire will have a command post set up for the rest of the evening. we are streaming sky 7's view of those fireworks from all over

>> just the family time. it's very connecting. reporter: the event brings strangers together. >> nice music. we made a few friends here. reporter: even furry family members enjoy the spectacular show. >> she's a tough girl. very brave. she will be fine. reporter: lauren martinez, abc7news. dan: a great day for the parades all across the bay area today. no matter where you look, red white and blue reigned as festivities took over city streets. >> happy fourth of july. dan: tens of thousands of people lined the streets of dansville for the annual parade. it started in 1975 and has grown in popularity to the point where people try to claim their spots along the parade route 24 hours in advance. this year's theme, celebrating our educators.

half-moon base parade which included dancing poems -- pumpkin maps. >> welcome to redwood city, the most famous parade on the west coast. dan: they aren't shy about patriotism and redwood city. organizers say it's the largest parade in northern california and entries from all over the state are invited by a committee . it drew another big crowd this year. alameda claims to have the longest fourth of route in the nation. it had 2500 participants in this year's edition. it's just over three miles long. like danville, people started staking out their spots yesterday. then there's app toss which claims it has the world's shortest parade with a route at just over half a mile. participants both young and old. san jose has its own twist of the holiday. it held its annual rose white and blue parade which recognizes

as the sunsets tomorrow evening, temperatures back into the 50's at the coast and 60's elsewhere. i will give you a look at the seven days ahead a little bit later. dan: thanks very much. dion: fourth of july always comes with customary barbecues and neighborhood parades. the day has taken on new meaning for many people. in light of the controversial supreme court decisions this past week. dan: it's a lot to think about. suzanne phan talked with people in several different neighborhoods and she asked them what independence day means to them. reporter: the fourth of fireworks. it means fun and a lot of red white and blue for some people. >> i have red white and blue on because i'm going to barbecue. reporter: we asked people in three different neighborhoods the same question today. what does independence day mean to you? in the castro, we heard >> it's a chance to celebrate the united states and the founding of the united states. reporter: the recent supreme

court decisions are a reason people felt differently this year. >> it's a difficult time. things are conflicted. i'm not so happy about a lot of the policies and ideas. reporter: the supreme court allowed businesses to refuse service to lgbtq customers. the court overturned affirmative action, a policy aimed at addressing racial inequality and increasing diversity on u.s. campuses. the court rejected the president's decision on student loan debt forgiveness. >> what does it mean to be free and independent? are we achieving that? reporter: what does independence day mean to you? >> i'm from mexico but to me feel so good to live here. i have a lot of opportunities. reporter: we came across a tech worker. >> independence day means we have freedom and we are able to vote and that's a huge privilege. i know the last you -- few weeks have not been great. a lot of things are not going

the way that i would love to see them to go in the country. i have faith that we can turn the tide and make a change for the better. reporter: in chinatown, justin says there's a lot of healing needed. >> we live in a deeply divided country right now. we are one of the worst off countries considering we are blowing it. we have all the resources we could ever want. reporter: this woman says there is hope. >> independence day means to me a sense of freedom to be able to discover life in my life and myself. reporter: suzanne phan, abc7news. dion: next, missing in yosemite. a hiker with bay area ties vanishes from the trail and his family is growing desperate. dan: this man was stabbed during the brutal soccer game brawl at levi's stadium. he's talking from a hospital bed. you will hear his side of the story tonight. >> tuna and mixed nuts with some cheese, moldy cheese.

concert for military families and veterans. the event was held on the south lawn of the white house where families enjoyed several star-studded musical performances. president biden open the concert with a speech to commemorate this day. >> i hope we all rededicate ourselves to the essential work of our democracy which is to unify, to unify, unify this nation. dan: today marks one year after the highland park mass shooting that took seven lives there get people gathered for a community walk in illinois to remember the victims. gary sinise shared words at the march or he reflected on his childhood in that city. >> i grew up in highland park. i remember as a kid being in the parade in highland park. dan: a gunman opened fire during last year's july 4 parade, shooting dozens of attendees and marchers. dion: new details on that stabbing this pack weekend during a soccer match at levi's stadium.

for the first time, we are hearing from the victim who says he's lucky to be alive and his injuries could have been worse. police are asking for help in finding at least one suspect involved. j.r. stone has the story. reporter: officers c looking at this fan fight video and others recorded last sunday night at levi's stadium during a mexico qatar soccer match. a fight that left emmanuelle diaz with serious wounds. >> i think it was luck because of god i'm here. reporter: he is grateful to be alive and recovering in the hospital. he spoke with our media partners at univision, saying he's originally from mexico but lives in san jose and works construction. he described the moment when he was stabbed during the fight, saying he was leading -- leaving when people began throwing beer. a colleague of his was attacked and it was everyone against everyone.

>> he tried to grabbed his hand. we both fell to the ground. when i was on the ground, he moved it up. he stabbed me here and on the other. reporter: police say a knife was used in the attack but they don't know how it made it into the stadium through metal detectors. police asking for your help in finding this man, suspected of committing the stabbing and this woman who is a person of interest in the case. diaz says he was stabbed below his neck but above his heart. >> he would have hit me lower or above. it was god or luck. if he would have hit me here, i don't think i would've been able to breathe or swallow. i can do those things now. reporter: the mexican soccer federation issued a statement tuesday condemning the violence among fans. levi's stadium officials also issuing a statement saying, ensuring the safety of our guests is our highest priority.

j.r. stone, abc7news. dan: happening now, the family of a man with bay area ties is in an emotional race to find him tonight after a hike in yosemite on sunday. hayden clement is the one wearing the clothing you see in the first photo. his linkedin indicates he played baseball at santa rosa junior college before transferring to san diego state. he was last seen hiking the upper chill new on the falls. there's an alert asking anyone who was hiking in that area to please call park dispatch. the chp is searching for a stolen green military humvee. it was taken from the national guard armory in santa rosa last night. the chp believes someone climbed the fence into the armory and use the vehicle to break out the gates. >> we were hoping when daylight came to up, we would find it in the west county here. that has not been the case yet. dan: the humvee doesn't have any

plates and there was no military equipment stored inside the vehicle. dion: tomorrow, customers will show their support what popular oakland doughnut shop targeted by robbers. more than a week ago, three men robbed colonial donuts on lakeshore avenue, threatening to shoot employees before they emptied the cash register. tomorrow, the community will respond with an act of kindness. the family has owned the shop for 40 years. they will buy up all the donuts and treats starting at 10:00 in the morning. dan: that's a nice gesture. people are rushing to the san francisco conservatory of flowers to smell a rare blooming flower. the golden gate park garden announced on their twitter tonight, the scarlet corpse flower has bloomed. dion: it can grow up to eight feet tall and can produce a not so pleasant smell. experts say the flowers population has declined by 50%
