silverado middle school evacuated, orders were also issued for streets in the area of coombs mill road and tamarisk drive. no reports of the fire damaging structures. good evening and thank you for joining us. dion: this afternoon's fire comes and made heightened concerns compounded by dry brush and dangers of fireworks. >> all across the bay area, illegal fireworks literally lit up the sky. dion: lena howland has the story from oakland. >> like clockwork as a student with -- it was dark enough, the skies lit up in bursts of red white and blue on the fourth of july. >> this is the worst that i have seen it. >> leaving behind a trail of trash from illegal fireworks all over the city, even spread out over major roadways like 35th and foothill. >> it looked messy this morning. >> stacked up with 1000 emails

complaining about the fireworks, and oakland city councilman sent out members of his own staff to help pick up the pieces in the district. filling up at least 10 truckloads worth of debris. >> this year we did make it very known to the public that we would be enforcing the law. but i live down the street and i did not see any response from the fire department or the police department. >> it is a story that is familiar because you have heard before. last year, oakland police did not issue a single citation for illegal fireworks. they say that their resources had been shifted to address heavy shine show activity that night. -- sideshow actively that night. no citations, but arrests for serious crimes. >> they have other priorities they have to address from crime issues and shootings that are going on and they don't have enough time to do with the fireworks.

we need to do better in the city. >> despite that, the interim fire chief says that for them it was actually a lighter night than expected. when 300 calls for service was up just 20% compared to their typical volume. although, they did have two small grass fires caused by fireworks which were quickly put out. >> we know that this is going to be a violent season, and that makes it angel -- difficult to use fireworks to celebrate. we want to discourage them from doing that. district was also a hotspot for illegal fireworks. according to reports from mission local, one of the largest crowds with scattered at 25th and harrison streets. after midnight, police declared it an unlawful assembly and started trying to disperse the crowd. video on social media shows a large police presence. we reached out to police for

updates on a number of incidents and citations but have heard nothing back. >> the fire department in contra costa county at 60 fires last night, including this one. it happened at a home on west eighth and the streets in antioch. the man says that he woke up to crackling noises, imagine how scary that was for him, when he saw the flames he woke his white up -- wife up and they got out with their dogs. the cause of this fire has not been determined but fire officials say that illegal fireworks started most of -- most of the fires they responded to. >> we know that eight fires were not caused by fireworks out of 60, but we know that others were caused by's -- by the remainder were likely caused by fireworks. >> in addition to fires, emergency crews received a number of calls because of fireworks injuries including a pleasant hill man who lost part of his hand. >> in castro valley, illegal

fireworks most likely caused this small brush fire near lake show. that was just after 11:00 and it burned about six acres. they say that blaze threatened a small neighborhood in the arcadia drive area but no homes were burned and nobody was hurt. crews from east bay regional parks and calfire helped with -- put that out. >> july 4 turned out to be violent in hayward webb place faced an unprecedented amount of violence. from last night through this morning, 11 people were shot in at least four separate shootings. one person died and another person was stabbed to death. he replaced say six people were shot when an argument turned into a gunfight. the man who lives near the shooting says there were upwards of 60 people out celebrating with different groups on the street all night. >> everybody was having a good time, fireworks shooting and then after that something

happen. people running and dodging. some people got in the house barely safe. >> two arrests have been made so far. dion: defendants misunderstanding at levi's stadium. police announced an arrest. and pictures came into santa clara police after a brutal brawl at levi's stadium sunday afternoon. it left one man in the hospital with stab wounds. the police inform said that footage led to an arrest. >> within 24 hours of our part -- press release are community provided information that led to the identification and arrest of alejandro garcia dillon doyle. >> he was traced to his home where he was arrested without incident by sacrament of police. he is now booked into the santa clara to carry main -- county

make jail. and charged with aggravated assault. >> we would not have been able to assist in -- arrest him without assistance. we were glad that the community was able to trust us. >> as they are grateful for the help, diaz is grateful for his life after being stabbed during a fight between fans at the mexico versus qatar gold cup match. he is thankful the knife did not attack his throat or hurt. >> he would have hit me lower or above. it was god or luck because if he had hit me here, i don't think i would have been able to breathe or swallow and i can do those things now. >> police could not confirm whether or not the knife was recovered. the investigation is ongoing. the lieutenant says that it is unknown how the weapon made it past metal detectors insecurity. >> we are reviewing any footage that we can do determine how he was able to bring the knife into

the stadium. >> a spokes person told us that the safety of our guests is our highest priority and we condemned the act of violence that took place on the stadium. he regularly evaluate our security protocols and are in the process of conducting an internal investigation to identify areas for improvement. >> santa confirmed its first death of zaila zine, known as tranquilizer. -- trying -- tranq. a woman died as fentanyl intersystem. it is used to treat large animals. overdoses cannot be reversed by narcan. the use of the drug an update to the combat plan for the overdose and opioid crisis.

color. >> i have not seen that data, we do know that but transportation writers are significant lower income, people who are driving. -- then people who are driving. >> many workers are already struggling with income and this may drive people from the region. moore place will be brought to struggling downtowns with other initiatives. >> let's be crystal clear. the worst thing that can happen for downtown san francisco and other downtown areas is for public transportation to fall apart. >> the senator says that if public transportation falls apart they will be even more cars and congestion on the roads. >> oakland helping english-speaking students -- new english-speaking students gain confidence and prepare for the school year. you

and learned english. i am still learning. >> oakland unified's language learning program has two teachers for a small group of children. they use a lot of visuals and repetition to help students process what they are being taught. they start out with a science unit because it is the most efficient way to engage students. today, they are presenting their projects using visuals and written words. feedback is always encouraged. five weeks of learning how to speak, listen, read and write in english gives students a head start in august, not to mention the needed confidence in the classroom. >> they produce language either by repeating things, practicing phrases, asking and answering questions, and now we see four weeks later, they are reading and writing. >> i'm kind of nervous because i am not sure if my english is

>> environmental groups say they have seen nothing like it. you're looking at all the video of trash and -- video of trash and debris left on the state line of lake tahoe. the founder of the group clean up the lake says they hauled in three tons of trash, the bus they have seen in five years. he called it heart-wrenching. >> tribal and environmental justice groups gathered at the state capital demanding reforms in policies to save salmon and the communities who depend on them. speakers specifically targeted the proposed alta conveyance project, a plan to build a tunnel to help reroute water

from the delta to southern california. will negatively impact our ancestral homelands and disturbed and destroyed sacred sites, cultural resources and further danger or fish. wildlife. and plant life. -- our fish. wildlife. and plant life. >> the governor and state border officials say the project is badly needed to modernize california's water infrastructure and help the state adapt to climate change. >> sausalito's mayor swam in the bay to save a similar the city. she is raising money to restore sausalito's sea lion sculpture. there it is. it fell over and cracked during our storms in january and will cost about $50,000 to restore. she is an experienced swimmer who has swum the english channel , so this should be pretty easy. she talked with abc7news just minutes after today's plunge. >> i care deeply about the

sausalito sea lion statue, it has not been the same without it with up -- on the waterfront. as the mayor i was wondering how could i love to help the city that i love. it was fantastic, beautiful day on the bay and there is nothing i love more than swimming on that water. >> the sea lion could be seen offshore perched on the rocks at low tide. a local artist created that sculpture in 1957. >> the english channel. all that water. [laughter] that stuff. >> and speaking of the weather, i don't care how sunny days. it is still cold. >> temperatures are average and mookie betts going the next couple of days. let me show you why. we have this deep marine layer, it is cloudy, as you look back from this vantage point to emeryville -- from emeryville and it stays breezy. we are still under the influence of a trough, this is the water

francisco to oakland and mountain view, 59 degrees in half moon bay. bright skies right now, as we look at those temperatures, 69 degrees in santa rosa and napa, 79 degrees in concord. you will notice from the export-oriented the clouds of the financial district. the clouds, fog and areas of morning dresser, cooler than average the next few days, and the summer heat returns next week. for those of you missing that hot weather we had several days ago, don't worry it is coming back. tomorrow, not exactly heat, the drizzle at the fog as we had tomorrow -- towards tomorrow afternoon. it's not going to complete the care. parts of the bay we will -- will have to deal with the cloud cover even at 4:00. your morning temperatures will be in the 50's for most of you, drizzle along the coastline, watch out for the fog as well. tomorrow, breezy in the upper with lingering clouds. you will be in the 70's for the most part and mild. you have to get above the marine

and they will be able to practice and play here is very special for them. just having my family here and my community, i grew up here and went to stanford, so i spent a lot of time in northern california it is so special to have my game here. i feel overwhelmed with gratitude being here right before going to world cup because it is a reminder of the journey and all of the skills that i have built up over time and a lot of positive memories. >> the sendoff game is this sunday, july 9 at 1:00 in paypal park in san jose. dion: ahead, a show of support for a doughnut shop that was robbed at gunpoint. we show you what the community did to rally behind shop owners.

>> the community is showing its support for a popular donut shop and targeted by robbers. more than a week ago, armed men robbed this donut shop on lakeshore avenue and threatened to shoot employees before they emptied the cash register and took the tip jar. check it out. this morning, customers responded with a big act of kindness.

person after person turned out to buy doughnuts, pastries and treats all in support of the family who has owned the shop for nearly 40 years. >> it really makes us all care about each other and show just a little bit of emotion to that. positive emotion. let's support each other and do things that put a smile on her face. >> little things that add up. brenda helped spread the word about the bio on social media and more than 400 people responded saying that they would take part. >> we feel really humbled that the community has rallied behind us. we have had a lot of people messaging and calling, emails, messages on facebook and instagram and people dropping off flowers, cards and personal letters. >> that is so sweet. the manager says that customers are even leaving tips for the staff. today's buyout was wildly successful, we are told and the shop has been much busier today than they usually are after the holiday.
