fire that gutted his home and another near 8th street in antioch. the fire started before 3:00 a.m. and everyone made it out safely because of the family's dogs. j.r. stone talked with that man who says he lost just about everything. >> i don't know exactly where it caught. reporter: fire damage in this backyard. inside the home, you can see how close the flames came to paul, his wife, and their dogs. >> what if they had ran out of the doggy doors and written into that fire? reporter: with holes in his ceiling and the smell of burn in the air, paul stood inside his destroyed home and described what happened when he got out of bed to see why the dogs were barking. >> all i see is flames. reporter: paul ran to wake up his wife. >> i wake her up. the houses on fire.

go out the front. go. reporter: the two were able to get out. when i asked paul about how he's doing now, he was overwhelmed with emotion. >> not so good. the hardest part all your stuff, you know? i still have cold drinks in the fridge. you guys want one? the hardest part is not losing all your possessions. the lady next little dog. reporter: paul told me he was playing guitar under this tree. now you can barely make out that it was even a tree and his guitars are gone, destroyed in the fire. >> where is the gold top now? reporter: he lost his harmonica

collection. it's unclear what started the fire. fireworks may be to blame. >> they've been doing it for years and it's getting worse. every year it gets worse. i'm alive. my wife is alive and i have my dogs. dan: have to feel for paul. july 4 turned out to be a violent night in hayward where police say they faced an unprecedented amount of violence. 11 people were shot four separate shootings. one victim died and another was stabbed to death. police say in one case, six people were shot when an argument turned into a gunfight. a man who lives nearby says there were upwards of 60 people out celebrating with different groups on the street all night. >> everybody is having a good time. fireworks shooting off. after that, bullets started flying and stuff. a lot of people running, dodging. i grabbed my grandkids. reporter: police have made two

arrests in connection with last night's violence. dion: the family of the bay area man who went missing at yosemite over the weekend is asking for the public's help tonight. hayden's family says they believe he slipped and fell into the water in an area off of the trail. he was hiking with three other friends who had been to yosemite a number of times. search and rescue crews had been looking for the young man. tuesday, the family went on the hike themselves in search of clues to what may have happened. >> until we are proven o , i know that my brother can beat the odds regardless of the terrain and water levels and what other for other -- what other factors there may be. dion: they are asking for witnesses to share details. even the smallest thing can be crucial. dan: following the long holiday

weekend, volunteers have picked up over four tons of trash from the shores of beautiful lake tahoe. many of them spent hours cleaning up a massive mess. tim johns talked with some of those volunteers and has their message. reporter: eye can see on lake tahoe wednesday morning. >> there was no accident about it. people partied, trashed, left it like that. reporter: following the fourth of july holiday, parts of the lake looking like a dumb site. colin west is the founder of the tahoe based nonprofit cleanup the lake. >> everything under the sun. shoes, socks, hats, coolers. reporter: he and a group of volunteers spent the day wednesday cleaning up the mess left behind by visitors. that includes trash on the beaches and also inside the lake itself. the group picked up over 8500

pounds of garbage in just one day. >> this has definitely been one of the worst cleanups that i've been on -- involved in in any single day. reporter: locals say it's the environmental impact that has them worried. riley mcclary is an animal photographer and filmmaker. he says he went out early my -- wednesday morning to see wildlife. when he saw the mess left behind, he decided to join the cleanup effort instead. >> there's nothing worse than seeing a beautiful animal gorge itself on garbage and trash and plastic. reporter: the tahoe basin has been a tourist destination. many locals feel this has to stop. that's why west is calling on all visitors to do their part to make sure this doesn't happen again. >> you are here because it's beautiful. because it's an amazing experience to enjoy what we have in the tahoe basin. so we need everyone to do their best to protect it.

reporter: tim johns, abc7news. dion: fast work by fire crews kept a brush fire from reaching school and in napa. a summer program in silverado and homes in the area were evacuated. flames charred seven acres. dan: the weather plays a huge role when it comes to wildfires. dion: sandhya patel joining us now with your 24 hour accuweather forecast. sandhya: hi there. the good news higher humidity is actually a good thing. it keeps the fire danger. here's what you can expect. 7:00, drizzly and great to start the day. temperatures in the 50's by noontime. the sun breaking inland not near the coast.

below average temperatures, upper 50's to upper 70's and breezy. the sun goes down and those numbers will fall into the 50's and 60's with a lot of low cloudiness and fog and repeating the drizzle once again. i will be back with a look at big changes that are coming up. dion: thanks. we are hearing from a good samaritan who tried to save the life of a woman who was fatally attacked in san francisc bayview. police sega 63-year-old woman was pushed to the ground from behi at 6:40 monday night. tonight, we spoke to mechho was in the neighborhood who noticed the woman on the ground bleeding from her job. >> she was still breathing. her pulse was low. it was heartbreaking. i thought she would live. dion: the woman's husband who speaks chinese didn't know what to do so he called 911.

the woman died at the hospital. no arrests have been made. as a pd is asking anyone with information to come forward. dan: a man is under arrest for stabbing a fan in the chest during a sunday soccer match at levi's stadium. the fight was captured on video by several fans who pulled out their cell phones. investigators linked the suspect to a home in sacramento where he was arrested last night. he's facing attempted murder charges. police are also investigating how the suspect got a knife inside the stadium in the first place. a bill to raise tolls on bay area bridges by a dollar 50 has made it out of an assembly committee. the increase would start in january of next year and go through december of 2028 to help fund improvements to public transportation. who knows if it will actually be rolled back after 2028. numerous agencies including bart and muni have said without billions of dollars in additional funding, they would have to make drastic cuts to

service. dion: metta is taking on twitter tonight, launching its new app called threads. it was already the number one trending topic in the u.s. tonight on twitter of course. the metta ceo says more than 2 million people signed up in just the first two hours. he says the goal is promoting connecting with like-minded people. a big question is whether threads can succeed. one expert says metta is more than capable and the timing is right with everything going on with his rival. >> they have plenty of problems. that's a conversation for another day. it is sanely run and very effective. and the user base of instagram is tremendous. given how volatile twitter is right now, it wouldn't be that hard -- it wouldn't take much to be a great improvement. dion: elon musk has made several changes to twitter including payment tiers for users. dan: abc7news bay area is on

you can call the national suicide and crisis lifeline by dialing 988. dan: we are committed to building a better bay area. tonight, we are looking at a mission to help tens of thousands of veterans. it's called stand down. well the event has been held in other cities, it has never taken place in santa clara county. lauren martinez spoke with those folks who are making it happen. >> i went to west point in i didn't come back to california until 2016. reporter: steve spent 30 years in uniform for the army. now with -- as the interim director for the veteran service office, his mission is to help the 64,000 veterans in santa clara county. >> we are attempting to get all the veteran service organizations in the county assembled in one place, at one time for a two day time. reporter: the event is called standdown. it will be the first of its kind

in the county. more than 50 providers will offer free food, haircuts, mental services, and more to veterans at the santa clara county fairgrounds. they will provide free rides. >> self identify as a veteran and you can get any bus or train. they will take you to the fairgrounds. reporter: her what it sounds like. the dental office on wheels that will provide free services this weekend. >> the need is absolutely huge. reporter: many veterans struggle to qualify for event -- dental care. >> i've had occasions where i want to cry because what i see. they are so appreciative. they deserve the best. reporter: in san diego, their event is considered tremendous with the support from their marine and navy communities. >> we don't have that kind of

community here. we don't have that kind of base here. but the people here, the residence here, and the board of supervisors i know here are solidly behind their veterans. reporter: it's about connecting veterans to benefits they've earned. >> i served in iraq. there are many veterans really could use this help. reporter: veterans are urged to register so organizers can plan accordingly. lauren martinez, abc7news. dion: a new app says it can help people track their vital signs and blood pressure. dniester door with our sister sister -- station in los angeles is planes how it works. reporter: sleight-of-hand is a big part of this magicians act. when it came to his blood pressure, he was under an illusion. >> it was high for me. reporter: he suffered a heart attack in 2015. now he keeps a close eye on his

blood pressure. >> i would have to put this thing on. you have to rest. >> taking blood pressure measurement at a different time of the day and several days a week. reporter: what if it could be as easy as taking a 55 second selfie? a new app has a feature that aims to do just that. >> the way that that works is a camera is looking at the changes in the blood vessels in the whites of my eyes. and along this part of my face. reporter: the app uses artificial intelligence and algorithms to measure blood pressure, heart rate, and blood oxygen levels. >> you are taking all these medicines but how do you know that you are actually controlling your blood pressure? this is a simple and easy way to do it. reporter: most americans should aim for more -- no more than 120 over 80. a recent study found only about 40% of respondents knew what a healthy blood pressure reading was. >> we call blood pressure the
