a proposal to raise tolls on most bay area bridges moving forward. but there is some new opposition. trying to take our money. >> all the time. the morning, everybody. amanda: there has been plenty pushcart -- pushback and disagreement over this dollar increase talk. here they already pay seven dollars to get across and by january of 2024 if the bill passes that could be raised to eight dollars 50 cents. sb 532 was introduced by scott wiener. covering the large operating deficits covered by were various transit agencies including bart and muni. the bill passed its first committee hearing yesterday evening, raising tolls on several state owned bridges by $1.50 as i mentioned beginning january through december of 2028, a full five years. however the bay area council representing 325 major employers is opposed to the bill. the president and ceo jim

wonderment has been vocal about the council stance saying that before they can support new fees for transit they need to see the agencies working to make things safer, more cost-effective and seamless. >> every time the transit agencies are short of money is a fool strategy. >> if they don't think that tools -- tolls are the right source, i hope they won't -- i hope they will suggest solutions instead of just saying no. >> the bay out disparities. those driving over the bridge are statistically lower income and disproportionately people of color but the state senator wiener says he hasn't seen that eta. still, he says public transportation riders are significantly lower income than people who are driving. in the next half-hour we will

discuss the seven state owned bridges here in the bay area could see impact again as soon january of 2024. for now, reporting live, amanda del castillo. >> i the u.s. military just hours apart. one with russia, the other with iran. jobina is tracking it this morning. jobina: the u.s. is calling for russia to cease what they call reckless behavior and accusing iran of trying to seize commercial oil tankers. they have released a video saying it shows russian fighter jets flying dangerously close to drones operating over syria. they were conducting a mission against isis targets when three russian aircraft began harassing the drones, dropping multiple parachute flares in front of them, forcing them to make evasive maneuvers. >> over the past few months

there have been dozens of risky unprofessional encounters carried out by russian fighter jets. jobina: incident yesterday, the navy said they stopped iranian versus from seizing oil tankers in the gulf of oman. the u.s. military says that no one was hurt. iran denies that there was any attempt to seize the oil tankers. kumasi: this morning we are trying to -- hearing from a woman -- a man who try to save a woman who was attacked in the san francisco bay area neighborhood. unfortunately she died. the 63-year-old woman was pushed to the ground from behind at 6:40 p.m. on monday in the area of 3rd street and edgerton. dion lund spoke with an auto mechanic in the neighborhood who said he wanted to run after the suspect but noticed the woman on the ground bleeding. >>

ground bleeding. i thought she would live. kumasi: say that the woman's husband who speaks chinese did not know what to do so he called 911. no arrests have been made. julian: santa clara police say a man has been arrested related to the stabbing at levi's stadium. it started as a fight courted on video by several other fans. investigators linked the suspect to a home in sacramento where he was arrested tuesday night and he is now facing attempted murder charges. police are also investigating how the suspect got the knife into the stadium and the first race. haywood police are investigating an unprecedented amount of violence on the fourth of july from tuesday night wednesday morning. 11 people were shot in at least or bank separate shootings. one person died, we are learning. another was stabbed to death.

kumasi: in the north bay, fast work by fire crews kept a brush fire from reaching a school and homes in napa yesterday. a summer program at silverado middle school and homes around coos ville road had to be back -- evacuated for a short time, flames chard seven acres. antioch man blaming fireworks on a fire that troy his house. a story that we first told you about yesterday. the fire gutted two homes near eighth and e streets at 3:00 in the morning. everybody made it out safe if you look at this you can see how much damage was left behind. holes in the walls and ceilings. just the smell of earned debris. the night of the fire paul said he got out of ed to see why his dogs were barking. he opened a door and all he saw was flames outside of his home. he then ran to wake up his wife.

>> i was like get up, get up, the houses on fire. get out the front. get in and go. kumasi: the exact cause of the fire has not been determined but fire officials say fireworks could be to blame. julian: a major cleanup in oakland after the fourth of july. streets were littered with trash from fireworks. the councilmember send out his own staff to help clean up the district. he says they picked up at least 10 pickup loads of trash. some of it left behind here. one member says he's done the cleanup for a couple of years now and this year was by far the worst. >> the cars, it was a mess. they were trying to avoid not going over what was left but i had never seen that much trash like i saw this morning. julian: oakland police sa didn't issue any citations for illegal fireworks but did make arrests for more serious crimes.

a discouraging site to see on the shores of tahoe beaches, trash left hind by those visiting for the fourth of july holiday area volunteers said they picked up over four tons of trash just yesterday. we spoke with some of those volunteers. >> see on the shores of lake tahoe wednesday morning. >> there was no accident about it, you know. people partying, they trashed it and left it like that. >> following the holiday, parts of the lake looking more like a dumpsite. collin west is the founder of the tahoe based nonprofit cleanup the lake. >> everything under the sun. shoes, flip-flops, hats, coolers. >> he and a group of volunteers spent the entire day cleaning up the mess left behind by visitors, including trash both on the beaches and inside the lake itself.

he says the group ticked up 8500 pounds of garbage in just one day. >> it has definitely been one of the worst cleanups i have been on or involved in in any single day. >> beyond the inconvenience he and other locals say it's the environmental impact that has them worried. riley mccleary is an animal photographer and maker. he went out wednesday morning to see the wildlife but when he saw the mess left hind he decided to join the cleanup effort instead. >> there is nothing worse than seeing such a beautiful animal gorge itself on garbage and trash and plastic. >> the tahoe basin has long been a tourist destination but many locals feel this has to stop. west is calling on all visitors to do their part to make sure that this doesn't happen again. >> you are here because it's beautiful, and amazing experience to enjoy what we have in the tahoe basin. we need everyone to do their best to protect it.

creative in attempting to save the sea lion statue. they sailed to raise money to save the statue. it was damaged during our winter storms. it costs around $50,000 for the restorations in the city is $5,000 short. >> i c statue. it hasn't been the same without it on the waterfront and as the mayor i thought how could i use what i love to help the city that i love. julian: the sea lion statue has been on display since 1957 and can be seen offshore at high tide perched on the rocks at low tide. the city says the sea lion is the most photographed esa public art in all of sausalito. kumasi: a new report claims airbnb rentals are down in san francisco. according to our partners at the standard, occupancy is down 25% this year compared to last year. >> we haven't seen a return in the international tourist.

amanda: good morning, julian. any talk of a toll increase seems to invite input from both sides. supporters and critics. here at the bay bridge toll plaza we know that drivers already pay seven dollars to get across and in january of 2024 that could increase to eight dollars $.50. the bill passed its first committee hearing yesterday evening, raising tolls on seven state owned bay area bridges i $1.50 beginning january as i mentioned, through december of 2020 eight. that's five years total. we have covered the large operating deficits faced by the various transit agencies including bart and muni. the money is meant to help fund public transportation but the bay area council representing 325 major employers is opposed to the bill, saying that for they can support new taxes, tolls, or fees for transit a need to see the agencies working to make systems safer, more

cost-effective and seamless. the council points out what they see as disparities in transportation saying that those who drive the bridge and pay tolls are statistically lower income with lower levels of education and disproportionately people of color. >> when the tolls get to this level it becomes material. >> let's be crystal clear, the worst thing that can happen for downtown san francisco and other downtown areas is for public transportation to fall apart. amanda: state senat introduced the bill admits he hasn't seen the data on the disparities but says that public transportation riders are significantly lower income than the people who are driving. take a look, the seven bay area bridges that would see an increase under the bill include the bay bridge, san mateo bridge, richmond san rafael, dunbar, carquinez, venetia, and antioch.

kumasi: philadelphia taking legal action after a mass shooting there this week. the man blamed for the deaths of five people is in custody in the city is filing suit against two makers of the so-called ghost guns. jobina is at the live debts with more. jobina: ghost guns were used in the attack. it happened in a adelphia neighborhood and in addition to the five people killed, several others were wounded, including a toddler. we have reported on ghost guns at length here in the bay area but if you are unfamiliar they are weapons that can be purchased online and assembled at home, posing a major concerns to police.
